  8. Link while active, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....328/SPORTS Obermueller unable to pick up Sounds By MAURICE PATTON Tennessean Staff Writer Wes Obermueller had not allowed a run in the first three innings of any of his first three starts for the Nashville Sounds ? before last night's outing against visiting Round Rock. The right-hander, optioned from Milwaukee on July 22, gave up four first-inning runs on five hits ? including three doubles ? but the Sounds rallied to tie before falling 6-4 in the final game of the four-game series. It marked the third Nashville loss in the series. Omaha defeated New Orleans, cutting the Sounds' lead in the Pacific Coast League American North to five games. "It's not going to be easy," Nashville Manager Frank Kremblas said after his team lost its third consecutive homefield series and lost for the sixth time in its last seven games. "We're playing teams still in (postseason contention)." Down 4-0, the Sounds picked up three runs when they opened the fourth with consecutive extra-base hits by Dave Krynzel, Jeff Cirillo and Nelson Cruz and a Warren Morris sacrifice fly. Steve Scarborough scored the game-tying run in the seventh on Corey D. Hart's pinch-hit double. In the eighth, former Sounds first baseman Carlos Rivera got the best of a lefty-lefty confrontation with Nashville reliever Mitch Stetter, hammering the first pitch into right-center for a two-run double. "We brought in our lefty to face their lefty, and he left a pitch up in the middle of the plate," Kremblas said. "(Rivera) did what you're supposed to do." The Sounds got the game-tying run to the plate in the ninth as Ryan Knox singled in a pinch-hitting role with two outs. However, Trent Durrington flied out to right field to end the game. "We've gotten down early (throughout) the whole series," Hart said. "We've been a team that didn't have to worry about that; we had the ability to come back. But we've come up short the last couple of nights." Great eight: Obermueller executed the fake-to-third, turn-to-first pickoff play during the sixth inning of last night's game. With Round Rock's Barry Wesson at first and Luke Scott at third, Obermueller faked toward Scott. Wesson broke to second on the fake, so Obermueller ran at him, then threw to shortstop Scarborough at second. Scott then broke to the plate, so Scarborough threw home and catcher Julio Mosquera ran Scott back to third before throwing to Chris Barnwell for the putout. It was the eighth time this season a Sounds pitcher has successfully executed the normally rare play. Justin Lehr did it five times, with Rick Helling and Mike Meyers accomplishing the feat once each. Spinning turnstiles: Last night's announced crowd of 10,537 was the sixth sellout crowd of the season. National exposure: A crew from ABC's World News Tonight was shooting footage from last night's Faith Night festivities for an upcoming show. Hotter than August: Nashville infielder Tony Zuniga was hitting .363 (45-for-124) over his last 34 games heading into last night but went 0-for-3. Scoring difficulties: Over their previous seven games, the Sounds were just 10-for-54 (.185) with runners in scoring position. Last night, they were 3-for-8, with all three of the hits coming in the three-run fourth inning. Ringing up the Ks: The Nashville pitching staff went into last night with 970 strikeouts, second in the Pacific Coast League behind Sacramento's 1,004, then added 13 last night. The Sounds are on pace to eclipse the franchise record of 1,080 strikeouts set in 2002. What they said: "Round Rock's good, and they've been playing much better lately than they were early in the year. We're still in good shape." ? Kremblas. 11. Nashville Site Game Summary: NASHVILLE ? The Nashville Sounds lost their third consecutive game to the Round Rock Express on Friday evening, coming up on the short end of a 6-4 decision in front of 10,537 fans in the finale of a four-game series at Greer Stadium. The loss, Nashville's sixth in its last seven games, cut the Sounds? lead in the PCL American Conference Northern Division to five games over the red-hot Omaha Royals, who have won 19 of their last 23 contests. The crowd was the sixth sellout of the season at Greer Stadium. Former Sound Carlos Rivera broke a 4-4 in the top of the eighth inning with a two-out, two-run double to right-center off Nashville reliever Mitch Stetter. Charles Gipson, who singled, and Mike Coolbaugh, who was hit by a Jeff Bennett pitch, scored on the knock to give Round Rock a 6-4 advantage. Rivera (3-for-4) finished the series with seven hits in 12 at-bats against his former club (.583). Round Rock got off to a quick start, plating four runs against Sounds starter Wes Obermueller in the top of the first inning. The visitors jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two runs off Obermueller on the first five pitches of the ballgame. Gipson opened the game with a double for the second straight night and scored when Brooks Conrad followed with a two-bagger of his own. Luke Scott continued his strong series at the plate with an RBI single up the middle to increase the lead to 2-0. The outfielder finished 8-for-17 (.471) in the four-game series. Tommy Whiteman doubled the advantage to 4-0 later in the frame with a two-out double to right-center. Nashville pulled within a run at 4-3 with three runs in the bottom of the fourth against Express starter Brandon Duckworth. Dave Krynzel put the Sounds on the board when he led off with his sixth triple of the season then scored when Jeff Cirillo followed with an RBI double to left, his first hit in four at-bats during his rehab stint. Nelson Cruz brought home Cirillo with an RBI two-bagger into the left field corner to cut the Round Rock lead to 4-2. Warren Morris pulled Nashville within a run with a sacrifice fly to left, which scored Cruz. Pinch-hitter Corey Hart tied the contest for the Sounds in the bottom of the seventh with a one-out RBI double to left off New Orleans reliever Scott MacRae that scored Steve Scarborough. AUDIO: Corey D. Hart's Game-Tying Double www.nashvillesounds.com/a...208-19.mp3 MacRae (3-0) earned a back-door win after blowing the save for the Express. He allowed one run in his three innings of work. Bennett (2-2) took the loss after surrendering a pair of runs in his two-thirds of an inning. Nashville executed its eighth successful fake-to-third, throw-to-first pickoff of the season when Obermueller caught Scott stealing home to end the top of the sixth. The Sounds continue their homestand on Saturday when they welcome the Oklahoma RedHawks to town for the 6 p.m. opener of a four-game series. Nashville right-hander Gary Glover (5-2, 3.11) will make the start and face Oklahoma right-hander and Nashville native R.A. Dickey (7-5, 6.24).

  13. Huntsville Site Game Summary: Gemoll Gets Stars Going in Right DirectionBrandon Gemoll knocked in the winning run with a tenth inning sacrifice fly to push Huntsville past Tennessee 3-2 Friday night in the opener of a three-game set at Smokies Park. The Stars won their second straight game to improve to 22-31 in the second half of the season, while the Smokies dropped their second straight game, both by a run, to fall to 23-30 in the second half and 30-30 at home. The Stars won their second straight game over the Smokies to square the season series at six games apiece. Vinny Rottino singled with one out in the tenth against Phil Stockman, who suffered the loss for a second consecutive night, and moved to second base on a base hit by Brad Nelson, his second of the game. Stockman uncorked a wild pitch to make the count 2-1 to Enrique Cruz that allowed Rottino to move to third base and Nelson to second. The Smokies elected to walk Cruz to load the bases before Gemoll drove a 2-1 offering into left field to plate Rottino with the go-ahead and winning run, marking the second straight game in which he has knocked in the decisive run. Jerome Gamble struck out Jerry Gil, retired Stephen Drew on a foul pop up and fanned Dan Uggla to end the game and earn his third win of the season. The right-hander has tossed two scoreless frames in each of his three outings on the current road trip. Gil delivered a two-out, two-run double in the fifth to break up a scoreless game and put the home team on top. The Stars bounced right back in the top of the sixth to score twice to tie the game. Rottino led off with a walk, moved to third on a Nelson single and scored when Cruz grounded into a double play. Gemoll then doubled to left and came plateward on a single by Jeff Winchester, who knocked in his first run since August 8. Josh Habel went five innings for the Stars, allowing two runs on six hits and a pair of walks in his first start against the Smokies. Keith Stamler worked three scoreless innings and closed his appearance by striking out the side in the eighth inning. Tony Gwynn, Jr. went hitless in five at-bats and lost a 14-game hitting streak, the longest for any Huntsville hitter this season. The series continues Saturday night with right-hander Carlos Villanueva making his double-A debut for the Stars against Smokies? right-hander Adam Bass. Coverage gets underway at 6:00 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.
  14. West Virginia Site Game Summary: INTIMIDATORS SCORE EARLY AND OFTEN TO BEAT THE POWERKannapolis, NC ? Lewis scored later in the inning on an errant throw by Lucas Harrell. Agustin Septimo drove in the third run of the inning on a groundout. The Power plated the final run of the inning when Charlie Fermaint got caught in a rundown between first and second base, and bought just enough time for Alcides Escobar to score from third before Fermaint was tagged out. In the bottom of the second inning Kannapolis scored four times to take the lead for good. Chris Getz knocked in the first run on a single, and Sean Smith followed him with a grand slam to give Kannapolis a 6-4 lead. Thursday night's game marked the return of Power pitching coach John Curtis after he was struck in the head with a baseball during batting practice recently in Greensboro, N.C. Curtis had experienced stroke-like symptoms, losing feeling in his left arm. While Curtis did not watch the game from the dugout, his presence was felt before the game during batting practice and in pre-game warm-ups. "We were all very happy to see him and see that he's in good spirits," said Manager Ramon Aviles. "All the guys were hugging him. We were happy to see him and I guess that kind of pumped the team up a little." Curtis left the game before it was cancelled in order to drive with his wife back to his home in San Diego to continue rehabilitation on his arm. Before the game, he spoke with most players individually, including starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo. "Just to see him around, walking around, it's a good feeling," Gallardo said. "He's been with (us) almost the whole season, so it's great to see him back. "It's been a while since he was down talking to us. He just told me the same thing he's been telling me all year, just go out there and work hard." Gallardo followed Curtis' orders, striking out six -- four of them looking -- while pitching four solid innings before the rain delay. Aviles said he was pleased with his pitcher's performance. "Gallardo was outstanding," Aviles said. "He had good stuff and he located his pitches well. It's a shame that the rain came. He probably could have had double-figures (in strikeouts)." "It's one of those things you can't control," Gallardo said about the rain. "I go out there and do my job and whatever happens, happens" The game was delayed in the middle of the fourth with West Virginia leading 3-1. The Power had opened a 2-0 lead over the BlueClaws, thanks to a pair of bloop base hits by Alcides Escobar and Carlos Corporan in the second. Both teams scored a run in the third. The umpiring crew called the game at 9:50 p.m., following a 1-hour, 40-minute delay. Because this was the last time the two teams meet this year, the game will not be made-up unless either team is within one game of first place at the end of the season.
