Link while active, text follows: www.wvgazette.com/section...2005080315 Brady's double lifts Power in 13th By Jay Srinivasan For the Charleston Gazette The West Virginia Power likes to take drama to the extreme. After muffing several opportunities to win in the ninth inning, the Power finally closed it out in the 13th inning to register a 6-5 victory over the Asheville Tourists in front of 2,840 fans at Appalachian Power Park Tuesday night. The turnout took the season attendance number to 186,740, breaking Charleston?s all-time professional baseball record. The previous mark was 185,389 set at Watt Powell Park in 1991 by the Wheelers. ?I think its exciting for the team, for the ownership, and for the city of Charleston to draw this type of attendance,? said Power general manager Andy Milovich. ?Obviously the stadium is the number-one reason. The staff has worked real hard in terms of generating some excitement and some promotions and fun activities.? Tied at 5 in the bottom of the 13th, Grant Richardson reached on shortstop Chris Nelson?s error and advanced to second on Carlos Corporan?s single to left. Pinch-hitter Josh Brady then walloped an RBI double to score Richardson. ?I was trying to do a little too much in my previous at bat,? said Brady. ?The next time, I calmed myself down a little bit and just tried to stay inside.? In the bottom of the ninth, the Power had a great opportunity to close the game. After Charlie Fermaint reached on a fielder?s choice, Nelson made two consecutive errors to load the bases. But Ryan Braun and Angel Salome struck out. Despite the win, Power manager Ramon Aviles felt the match should have been finished earlier. ?They really handed it to us in the ninth inning and we didn?t take advantage of it,? said Aviles. ?We swung at bad pitches two hitters in a row. We finally got a big hit from Brady.? Robert Hinton (3-3) got the win after pitching allowing no hits and striking out three in the last two innings. For the Tourists, Jason DiAngelo (3-3) took the loss after giving up two hits and one earned run in 1 1/3 innings. The Power jumped to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on Corporan?s two-run homer to right. A two-run double by Alcides Escobar extended the West Virginia lead to 4-0. The Tourists then rallied in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs on a Dustin Hann homer and Jeff Dragicevich?s double. After West Virginia went ahead 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth, Asheville fought back in the sixth on a Justin Nelson RBI double to even the score.

  3. Final: Sacramento (A's) 5, Nashville 1 Nashville Site Game Summary: Good use of the term "man the bump" -- haven't seen that one in years... NASHVILLE ? The Sacramento River Cats continued their dominance over the Nashville Sounds on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium, scoring a 5-1 win in front of 3,844 fans in the finale of a four-game series and eight-game homestand. Sacramento secured a three-games-to-one series victory and notched its 25th win in the last 30 contests against the Sounds. Nashville wrapped up its homestand with only two wins in eight tilts. Despite the loss, Nashville (60-51) maintained its six-game lead over Memphis in the PCL American Conference Northern Division, due to the Redbirds? loss to Fresno. Sacramento left fielder Shawn Garrett gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when he belted a one-out solo homer off Nashville starter Jeff Housman that barely hugged the right field foul pole for the outfielder?s 14th tater of the year. River Cats second baseman Andrew Beattie upped the advantage to 3-0 in the sixth with a two-out shot to right off Housman, his seventh roundtripper of the campaign. All-Star Corey Hart put Nashville on the board when he led off the bottom of the sixth with a rocket to left off Sacramento starter Seth Etherton. The bomb, Hart?s 14th of the year, made the score 3-1. Audio Link, Corey Hart's HR: www.nashvillesounds.com/a...%208-2.mp3 Sacramento responded quickly, adding a pair of runs against reliever Mitch Stetter in the top of the seventh to pull away, 5-1. Tom Gregorio opened the frame with a walk then moved to second on Freddie Bynum?s bunt single. Both runners moved up on a Stetter wild pitch then Gregorio scored on a passed ball charged to catcher Julio Mosquera. Matt Watson added a sacrifice fly to plate Bynum with the second run in the frame. Etherton (7-5) earned his first victory in four starts after holding the Sounds to one run on six hits in six innings. Housman (4-10) dropped his third consecutive start after allowing three runs, all on homers, in his six frames, marking just his third quality start of the season. The Sounds join the rest of the Pacific Coast League for an off day on Wednesday before embarking on their longest road trip of the season, a 12-game trek to Colorado Springs, Salt Lake, and Memphis. Nashville opens the trip with an 8:05 p.m. CT opener of a four-game series on Thursday evening against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (AAA-Rockies). Right-hander Gary Glover (3-2, 2.75) mans the bump for the Sounds to face Sky Sox right-hander Christian Parker (1-2, 7.55). 6. Final: Huntsville 4, West Tenn (Cubs) 3 Beating RHP Ricky Nolasco no small feat... Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link for RHP Alec Zumwalt photo, text follows -- Zumwalt Says "No" to Nomar in NinthTy Taubenheim worked a strong seven innings and was supported by a three-run fifth inning rally in Huntsville?s 4-3 win over West Tenn Tuesday night in the opening game of a three-game set at Pringles Park. The Stars won their fourth in a row to improve to 18-19 in the second half, while the Diamond Jaxx fell to 22-15 in the half and a game behind Carolina for the top spot in the North Division after the Mudcats victory over Chattanooga. Jerome Gamble worked a scoreless eighth inning behind Taubenheim but gave up a leadoff home run to Luis Montanez in the ninth that trimmed the Stars lead to 4-3. Ryan Theriot singled, moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Jose Reyes and stayed there when Adam Greenberg walked. Stars manager Don Money replaced Gamble with Alec Zumwalt, who had given up nine runs, seven earned, over his last two outings. The right-hander retired pinch-hitter Aaron Sisk on a foul ball to catcher John Vanden Berg and struck out Nomar Garciaparra for the final out of the game. Zumwalt earned his second save of the season and his first since Montgomery on May 14. Garciappara went hitless in four official at-bats and was hit by Taubenheim in the third inning in his third game on a rehab assignment with West Tenn. Tony Gwynn, Jr. led off the fifth inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Callix Crabbe, his second of the night. Brandon Gemoll then hit a ground ball that was fielded by first baseman Brandon Sing but his one-hop throw to the plate was off-line and could not be handled by Reyes, the catcher, allowing Gwynn to score to tie the game at two. Brad Nelson moved Gemoll to second base with a ground ball out before Vinny Rottino doubled to plate Gemoll with the go-ahead run. Enrique Cruz followed with a double to chase home Rottino to push the visitors lead to 4-2. The Stars had managed just one run on six hits over 14 innings against West Tenn starter Ricky Nolasco the first two times they faced him prior to Tuesday night. The Stars loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth on walks to Ben Van Iderstine and Vanden Berg and a pinch-hit single by Guilder Rodriguez before Victor Ramos replaced Federico Baez and fanned Gwynn for the final out of the frame. Crabbe opened the ninth with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a Gemoll ground out and was thrown out trying to score after Buck Coats caught Nelson?s fly ball in shallow centerfield. The Stars hit into four double plays for a third time season, yet have won two of those three games. Taubenheim gave up two runs, on sacrifice flies by Casey McGehee in the first and third innings, on five hits over his seven frames. He struck out four and walked one and earned his first double-A victory. Nolasco suffered his second loss of the season after yielding four runs on nine hits over seven innings. The series continues Wednesday afternoon with Stars left-hander Josh Habel taking the mound against West Tenn right-hander Carlos Marmol. On Tuesday night, the West Virginia Power won their fourth game in a row, marking the third time during the four-game winning streak that they won in their final at-bat as they beat the Asheville Tourists 6-5 in the bottom of the 13th inning at Appalachian Power Park. Carlos Corporan hit a two-run homer, his sixth of the year, in the bottom of the second inning to give the Power a 2-0 lead. Alcides Escobar delivered a two-run double in the bottom of the third inning and put the Power up 4-0. In the top of the fourth inning Dustin Hahn hit a solo shot and Chris Nelson smacked a two-run double to make it a 4-3 game. Joe Koshansky tied the game in the top of the fifth inning with a solo shot, his 30th homerun of the season. The game remained tied at 4-4 until Ryan Braun drove in Escobar with a single in the bottom of the fifth inning. In the top of the sixth, the Tourists tied the game at 5-5 on Nelson?s RBI single. The game ended in the bottom of the 13th inning when Josh Brady drove in Grant Richardson with the game-winning single. Robert Hinton (3-3) earned the victory, and Jason DiAngelo (3-3) obtained the loss. The Power are 20-17 in the second half after the win and the Tourists move to 16-22 with the loss. On Tuesday night the Power also broke the all time professional baseball attendance record in Charleston with a crowd of 2,830, moving the season total to 186,730, which breaks the previous record in a season held by the Wheelers in 1991 when they drew 185,389 fans. The Power will continue the four game series against Asheville at Appalachian Power Park on Wednesday night. The Power will throw LHP Greg Kloosterman (3-15, 4.67) and the Tourists will counter with RHP Ching-Lung Lo (4-7, 5.82). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central). The 19-year-old Puerto Rican hit home runs in four of five games for Helena before being sent to West Virginia, where he went 5-for-10 with a double, a homer and six RBIs in his first two games. The 2003 fourth-round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers left the Pioneer League as the circuit's top home run hitter (12) and also ranked first in slugging percentage (.744) and runs (46), third in RBIs (32) and extra-base hits (23), fourth in stolen bases (11) and sixth in average (.364).
  13. Link while active, text follows: www.dailymail.com/news/Sp...005080217/ Charleston attendance mark will fall tonight Jack Bogaczyk Charleston Daily Mail Sports Editor Never mind where the West Virginia Power is in the South Atlantic League second-half Northern Division standings. Considering the Power's recent personnel moves, the Milwaukee Brewers' low Class A farm club belongs on the TV show "Extreme Makeovers." Maybe it's because the Brewers were embarrassed by a 5-22 start in the season's first 30 days, as they began a new affiliation in a new ballpark. The Brewers understand, with only a two-year Player Development Contract with West Virginia Baseball LLC, time's a wastin' on proving they want to stay in such nice digs after 2006. Maybe it's because some of the youth among their personnel from recent drafts has started to mature. Eleven of the 25 players on the active Power roster were picked in the first 10 rounds of drafts. Thirteen were chosen somewhere in the last two drafts. About half of the roster has turned over since Opening Day, too. The Power already has used 42 Baby Brewers this season. Anyway, as Asheville makes its first trip to Appalachian Power Park to begin a four-game series tonight, the Power is coming off an off day and its first winning month -- 16-13 in July. There's something else, but it was inevitable since the 4,474-seat Appalachian Power Park opened on April 14 with an 8-3 win over Hagerstown before 5,354 fans, after an 0-6 start. With a crowd of at least 1,490 tonight, the Power will break Charleston's all-time professional baseball attendance record. The club's smallest home crowd this season was 1,681, on June 8. For an 11-inning win on newcomer Angel Salome's walk-off homer Sunday afternoon, West Virginia topped the attendance (183,352) for the Senators' first season in Watt Powell Park, 1949. The Power attendance, through 51 dates, is 183,900, a game average of 3,605. The club record was 185,389, set at Watt Powell Park in 1991 by the Wheelers, who also finished with a Charleston best-in-history, regular-season record of 92-50. The Power (19-17 second half) has 17 scheduled home dates remaining. If the average remains where it is, the previous fan standard will be obliterated by a Power Park debut year of 245,000-plus. Manager Ramon Aviles' club has gotten a power surge -- no pun intended -- in recent weeks, with the additions of third baseman Ryan Braun, Milwaukee's top pick in the June draft, and Salome, a catcher who was a fifth-round pick last summer. In the 22 games since former Miami (Fla.) star Braun moved up after a short stint at short-season Helena (Pioneer League), the Power has won 14 of 22. He's a major reason the Power doubled its June homer output of 10 in July. When Aviles said last week that the Power is hitting better with runners in scoring position, well, that starts with Braun, whose defense at third has been a head-turner, too. Braun not only has a 14-game hitting streak and is batting .326 with five homers and 16 RBI. He's batting .429 with runners in scoring position and two outs, and .538 (7-for-13) with runners aboard and two outs. The Power pitching staff improved measurably in July, too, primarily in middle relief. The club earned run average last month was 3.59, more than one run per game better than it was over the first two months. Where does the Power go from here? Well, if Brevard County, the Brewers' high class A Florida State League club, is in contention for a second-half title, Braun and some of the other Power talent could head there for the stretch drive. If West Virginia can climb into the Northern Division race from the current 6 1/2 games behind Delmarva, the top Milwaukee prospects who have improved things at Power Park in recent weeks might stay through the Labor Day end of the season.

  15. Final: Helena 12, Great Falls (White Sox) 5 Helena Independent Record: Brewers sizzle with win over White Sox The Helena Brewers are off to a good start to claim the second half Northern Division title after a 12-5 win over Great Falls Monday. The Brewers collected 14 hits, including four doubles and a triple, off five pitchers as they defeated the Sox for the seventh time in nine starts this summer. Helena took the lead in the first and didn't look back as the Brewers outhit the White Sox by five runs. Agustin Septimo hit his first triple on the season in the first inning with a line drive to right field. Septimo would then score off of Matt Gamel's double for a one-run lead. Carlos Galladro and Scott McKnight would both double in the second with McKnight picking up an RBI. Great Falls would score their first run in the second and would not score again until the fifth inning. Seven runs were scored in the seventh by the Brewers to extend the lead by 10 runs. The Brewers had the bases loaded with no outs when Freddy Parejo singled to left field for an RBI. Ned Yost was hit by a pitch from Travis Doyle to be the second Brewer to cross the plate in the inning. Yost would score after Darren Ford reached off a fielding error. The Brewers returned to the top of the batting order with one out, but Septimo was called out on a sacrifice fly. McKnight lead the Brewers with three RBI adding to his nine on the season. Helena is still tied with the Billings Mustangs for the Northern Division lead after playing two games in the second half. Billings beat Missoula 13-5 Monday for a two game winning streak. The Mustangs came in a close second to the Brewers in the first half of Northern Division standings, but were unable to take over the lead the Brewers held from the beginning. The Brewers will continue their three-game series against Great Falls today for game two at 7:00 (8:00 Central) to try and continue their two-game winning streak. 16. Final: Sacramento (A's) 8, Nashville 4 Nashville Site Game Summary: NASHVILLE ? The Sacramento River Cats hammered four home runs en route to an 8-4 victory over the Nashville Sounds in front of 4,233 fans on Monday evening at Greer Stadium. With the loss, Nashville (60-50) maintained its six-game lead in the PCL American Conference Northern Division due to a 13-inning loss suffered by second-place Memphis. Sacramento All-Star outfielder Matt Watson put the visitors on the board with a three-run homer to right in the top of the first inning. Freddie Bynum and Jermaine Clark, who had walked and doubled to open the game, scored on Watson?s 15th roundtripper of the season. The blast was the first longball served up by Nashville starter Mike Meyers in 45 1/3 innings, dating back to May 17. River Cats center fielder Charles Thomas continued the longball fest in the second, when he led off the frame with a solo blast to right-center, his third of the year, to increase the lead to 4-0. Catcher John Baker continued the power surge for the visitors in the fourth with a two-out solo homer to right off Meyers, his fourth tater of the year. Nashville got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, plating a trio of runs to pull within 5-3. Warren Morris singled to open the frame then scored on outfielder Corey Hart?s subsequent triple, which was a misplayed fly ball by Thomas that landed on the warning track nearly 25 feet from the outfielder. Prince Fielder knocked in Hart with an RBI groundout for the second run. With one down, Nelson Cruz reached on an infield single then moved to second and third on separate wild pitches by River Cats starter Mike Ziegler. Catcher Mike Rivera drove him in with a two-out single to right. The visitors tallied a fourth roundtripper in the fifth when Brant Colamarino ripped a two-run shot to left-center off Meyers, his tenth of the year, to increase the River Cats? lead to 7-3. The Sounds got another run back in the bottom of the frame when Dave Krynzel scored on Hart?s infield single to make it a 7-4 contest. Nashville reliever Brett Evert worked into and out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the top of the sixth, retiring three batters in order without damage. Sacramento scored its final run of the evening in the seventh on a Shawn Garrett sacrifice fly. Ziegler (5-3) picked up the victory after allowing four runs on eight hits in his five innings of work. Meyers (4-4) took the loss after surrendering seven runs, all coming on his season-high four home runs allowed, on seven hits in his 4 1/3 frames. The teams wrap up the series with a 7 p.m. meeting on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium. Left-hander Jeff Housman (4-9, 5.71) takes the hill for the Sounds to face Sacramento right-hander Seth Etherton (6-5, 2.81). Audio Link, Nelson Cruz Throws Out Runner At Plate: www.nashvillesounds.com/a...%208-1.mp3 The Sounds now need a win today to garner a split with the River Cats. ?They hit too many home runs,? Sounds manager Frank Kremblas said. ?[Meyers] left some pitches up in the zone. I?d like to have a split, but it?s not life or death at this point.? ***Steroids controversy comes to Greer By Nate Rau, nrau@nashvillecitypaper.com The steroids controversy that shook baseball to its core earlier in the day found its way into the home locker room at Greer Stadium Monday. Members of the Nashville Sounds were sounding off after Baltimore Orioles first baseman and possible future Hall of Famer Rafael Palmeiro was suspended 10 days by baseball for violating the league?s banned substance policy. In the spring, Palmeiro testified before the United States Congressional Committee he never used steroids. Earlier this season he became the fourth player in baseball history to record 3,000 hits and 500 homers. In his prepared statement Monday, Palmerio said he never intentionally used a banned substance. Sounds outfielder Ryan Knox says Palmeiro?s alibi shouldn?t hold up. ?No one is ignorant of anything they?re tested for,? Knox said. ?We?re inundated in spring training and throughout the year with lists, with pamphlets. ?It is impossible to accidentally take something you thought was illegal. That is your own stupidity and if that happens, you should be guilty anyway.? Sounds hitting coach Gary Pettis played with Palmeiro with the Texas Rangers in the early 1990s. He said he was surprised at the news of Palmeiro?s suspension and added Palmeiro didn?t strike him as someone who would cheat. ?I still don?t know what happened,? Pettis said. ?They said it was a violation of the policy, now what that means I don?t know. Whatever it is, I?m surprised.? Music City baseball fans may be frustrated with the notion that some of the biggest name players have earned their stardom with the aid of illegal substances. However, it may be unfair to spread the blame to minor league players like the ones who play with the Sounds. This is the first year players on major league 40-man rosters have been subject to testing, but Knox said non 40-man players have been tested for years. Knox said the punishment for offenders isn?t strict enough. Right now there?s a 10-game suspension for a first offense, a 30-game suspension for a second offense and a one year suspension for a third. ?It isn?t my idea, but I agree with it 100 percent ? you take a steroid, you get caught, you go to jail,? Knox said. ?First of all, it is illegal. Second of all, he lied to the United States Congress and he lied to America. Shame on him.? Palmeiro is the seventh major league player to be banned under the league?s new policy. ***Tennessean: One bright spot was the work of reliever Brett Evert. Making his second appearance since joining the team from Double-A Huntsville last Friday, Evert allowed just one run in 3 2/3 innings and worked out of a bases-loaded, no-outs situation unscathed in the sixth. Despite the loss, the Sounds' lead remains six games over Memphis in the PCL American North due to Fresno's 2-1, 13-inning road victory over the Redbirds. Play guitar: Tony Zuniga became the fifth Nashville Sounds player to be presented a Copley guitar prior to yesterday's game, after homering off the guitar-shaped scoreboard during Sunday's win over visiting Sacramento. All five of this season's guitar winners ? Trent Durrington, Kevin Orie, Steve Scarborough, Rickie Weeks and Zuniga ? are infielders. 'Moneyball' author visits: Michael Lewis, whose book 'Moneyball' chronicled the approach of the small-market Oakland Athletics to competing in the free agent era, was in attendance at last night's game. Lewis was following a couple of Sacramento players ? the River Cats are Oakland's Class AAA affiliate ? and researching the area for a television pilot he's working on. 17. Nashville Press Release: Nashville Sounds right-hander Ben Hendrickson has been suspended for three games by the Pacific Coast League for intentionally throwing at Fresno batter Adam Shabala during the fifth inning of Friday's game at Greer Stadium. Hendrickson, who was immediately ejected from Friday's contest by home plate umpire Jack Samuels following the incident, will begin serving the suspension on Thursday in Colorado Springs and will miss his next start as a result. The right-hander is 5-8 with a 4.71 ERA in 22 games (21 starts) for Nashville this season.
  18. First of all, the now-locked July thread can be found here: p092.ezboard.com/fbrewers...mp;stop=40 We now know that a few of the names we haven't seen in action in a while are indeed on the disabled list -- unfortunately, we don't have the dates that they went on nor injury updates, maybe we'll see something in future online newspaper accounts. Brevard County DL: RHP / 1B / DH Ben Diggins, LHP Ryan Anderson West Virginia DL: IF / OF Will Lewis, RHP Brian Montalbo (Montalbo's actual status remains cloudy as to whether he left the squad on his own as part of this move) Helena DL: RHP Simon Beresford (should return shortly), LHP David Welch (20th round, 2005) Arizona Restricted List: As mentioned earlier, just-signed 9th round infielder Carlos Hereaud appears on this restricted list. RHP Jorge Fermin, a 19-year-old who made two appearances for Arizona earlier this year, is also restricted at this time. Normally, this is an issue of reporting to the appropriate team, but the circumstances can vary significantly.

  20. Final: Arizona Rangers 10, Arizona Brewers 9, 13 innings Love those night games -- 84 degrees after the rain day! Arizona Box Score: Obviously a lot to digest with a score like that, but it's still tough to identify any real breakthroughs or disasters to discuss -- guys have good games, guys have bad games, and the A-Crew trudges along... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...k_athrok_1 No Game Log Available At This Time...
  21. The deal for RHP Gerrit Simpson from the Rockies (to Huntsville) is for a PTBNL (if the Rockies need one), otherwise cash later on, certainly no grand sum of money. Definitely sounds like a deal where the Brewers were in a bind, put the word out for an available arm capable of pitching at AA, with the implied word that a similar player could be moved if the Rockies develop an organizational soldier need of their own.
  22. Because Vero Beach (Dodgers) won the first half FSL title, the Manatees are technically only one game out of a playoff spot. As bright as the future looks for the Power, someone needs to start beating Delmarva (Orioles), especially at their place.
