  1. Link while active, text follows: www.dailymail.com/news/Sports/200507194/ For pitchers, sometimes it is good to forget Michael Dailey Charleston Daily Mail sportswriter Hagerstown Suns pitcher Michael Devaney has been more than impressive on the mound since being selected in the 23rd round of the 2004 amateur baseball draft. As a rookie last summer, the 6-foot-4, 220-pound right-hander dominated New York-Penn League hitters in compiling a 5-0 record and 1.95 ERA with the Brooklyn Cyclones. Now in his second season in the New York Mets' organization, Devaney continues to impress with a 6-1 record, including an 8-2 win over the West Virginia Power on Monday evening. After allowing first-inning, back-to-back homers to first-rounder Ryan Braun and Grant Richardson, Devaney settled down and allowed just three singles in his final five innings on the mound. Devaney finished with eight strikeouts and allowed just three singles after the first inning, in tossing six strong frames to move his earned run average to 3.61 in 89 2/3 innings. Suns reliever Joseph Serfass tossed three shutout innings in collecting his second save. The loss ended a four-game win streak for the Power and evened its record at 12-12, while Hagerstown improved to 9-15. "Tonight it looked like we were going to light the place on fire in the first inning," said Power Manager Ramon Aviles of his team's quick start. "But then we didn't make any adjustments after that. "After giving up two home runs, their pitcher (Devaney) started throwing more breaking balls and changeups and he kept everything away. We never adjusted to that. "We tried to pull those outside pitches and it played right into his hand." For Devaney, his biggest assets were a short memory and pinpoint control on the outer half of the plate. "The first home run, I made a bad pitch and he hit it," said Devaney. "The second homer, I was behind in the count and had to throw a strike and he knew it. "But, after giving up those two home runs, I just tried to forget about them, bear down and make adjustments in every inning." The biggest adjustment Devaney made was using the outside corner to get ahead in the count and to ultimately frustrate Power hitters. "For the most part, I tried to get strike one on the outer half of the plate," said Devaney. "They were looking at the inner half, so strike one was there for me. "After that, I could use my curve against them because they were pretty pull happy." West Virginia starter Greg Kloosterman (3-13, 4.60 ERA) took the loss in allowing six hits and three earned runs in four innings. Derek DeCarlo and Robert Hinton combined to toss the final five innings. At the plate, Milwaukee's top draft pick this year -- Braun -- had his best night as a member of the Power with three of his team's six hits. In 10 games with the Power, Braun is batting .244 with two homers, four doubles, two stolen bases and eight runs batted in. "He's doing really well," said Aviles. "He's swinging the bat well and he plays a good third base. He's just starting here and trying to get experience, but he looks like a pretty good player."
  2. More Honors for the Angelic One: Pioneer League Angel Salome, Helena 7 G, 31 AB, 9 R, 17 H, 3 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 10 RBI, .548 AVG, 1 SB The Pioneer League Offensive Player of the Week award continues to be monopolized by two hitters as Helena's Angel Salome took the honors for the second time in four weeks after two consecutive wins for Ogden's Sergio Pedroza. Salome, the Brewers' fifth-round pick in 2004, has absolutely owned Pioneer League pitching since he went 3-for-5 in the season opener. Since then, the 19-year-old from the Bronx has collected four more three-hit games and three four-hit games in just 24 starts to lead the league with a .438 average. Last week, Salome went 10-for-18 (.556) with a home run and five RBIs in a four-game series against Ogden, including a 4-for-4 performance July 13. He followed that up by going 7-for-13 (.539) with three doubles, a homer and five RBIs in a three-game set against Orem. On the season, Salome is the league leader in hits (46), RBIs (35) and slugging percentage (.705) while ranking second in extra-base hits (16), third in doubles (10) and on-base percentage (.487) and fifth in runs scored (24). http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/images/2005/07/18/hfbnuuwy.jpg

  7. www.starsboxscore.com/ Mobile MeltdownA sparse crowd for this one....... Even the recent All-Star game here wasn't a sell-out...... Mobile averages 9th in attendance in the Southern League, drawing less than 3,000 a game, but far better than West Tennessee, who drew a little over 800 Sunday and 972 last night in the opening game of a series vs. the Smokies, despite the fact they won the 1st half and are in contention in the 2nd half, and have some bonafide prospects to check out. Brian Whitaker may have been grateful to not have to face Dana Eveland for the first time in five starts vs. the Stars this season, but David Bradley put an end to any question whether he was beatable........ Filling the shoes of Eveland in the rotation, he went a season-high seven innings, striking out another season-high of seven, giving up just two runs, one earned, without walking a batter.. Whitaker had gotten the jump on Bradley though, retiring at one point, nine straight hitters while holding a 2-0 lead. He helped his own cause in the bottom of the 3rd when he led things off with a single. Up to that time, he was 2-for-18 at the plate...... Leadoff hitter Kennard Jones then dropped a bunt on the first pitch from Bradley, who came off the mound and one-hopped a bad throw to Brandon Gemoll for an error....... After another bunt loaded the bases, Paul McAnulty, back in Mobile after a 10-game stint with the Padres, came up. Hitless with the bases full this season, he knocked in the first of the Bay Bears' two runs on an 0-2 single just inside the left field line in front of Brad Nelson....... Bradley finally got the next two hitters out -- Corey Smith swinging on a 1-2 pitch for a strikeout, and a force out at home plate when Steve Baker hit a 1-2 bouncer to Vinny Rottino...... The bases remained full, however, and Ronnie Merrill drove a one-strike pitch to left on a hop to send in Jesse Garcia........ Joe Gerber, the 8th man to bat in the inning, struck out swinging to end the inning. His one hit with the bases loaded this year had been a grand-slam HR vs. West Tennessee on June 26. The Stars finally broke out in the 6th inning, after being held to just two singles........ Tony Gwynn, Jr. legged out a bunt in front of the plate and Kennard Bibbs singled over the head of Ronnie Merrill...... Rottino then tied the game up with a line drive that fell in the gap in left-center for his 5th triple of the year........ One out later, Gemoll, a .298 hitter with runners in scoring position, shot a single through two infielders to center field to score Rottino, putting the Stars in front. Gemoll has 25 RBIs in June and July --- 11 more than he had the first two months of the season. That's the way it remained until they tacked on one more in the 8th when Enrique Cruz ripped a double down the left field line into the corner off Nate Mateo, scoring Nelson...... Luke Carlin missed the throw from left fielder McAnulty for an unearned run, but Cruz got his RBI. That should have been the insurance run, but with the help of three 9th inning errors, the Stars packed on five more runs in the 9th to embarrass Mobile again. It was the 4th time this season the Stars had scored five in an inning against Mobile...... In the last series at Hank Aaron Stadium, the Stars had won two of them by identical scores of 14-3, scoring a record 12 runs in an inning in one of them........ The Stars have more big innings (6) against Mobile (4+ runs) than any other team in the league........ The Stars are now 10-3 vs. Mobile this season, their best record since 2001 and their best ever by a long shot. The Stars still have two series remaining against Mobile at home in August. Tuesday night, the Stars have a chance to make Mike Thompson the 6th pitcher in Stars history to lose four games to them in a season......... Brian Whitaker, who is now 1-7 vs. the Stars going back to last year, was the last one....... Previous four-game losers were Steve Foster in 1990, Derrin Ebert, Dennis Ulacia, and Dustin Moseley........ Thompson is 0-3 vs. the Stars this year with a 3.57 ERA. He's no patsy. He's 9th among Southern League ERA leaders and he's a workhorse, 3rd in innings in the league........ Dennis Sarfate comes off the DL to go for the Stars. He's 15th in the league in ERA (3.62) and has beaten the Bay Bears three times without a loss. Last year, he was 2-3 vs. Mobile. More from David Weiser's website: www.starsboxscore.com/standing.html
  8. Link while active, text follows: www.nashvillecitypaper.co...s_id=42948 Fielder?s fireworks steal show at Greer By Nate Rau, nrau@nashvillecitypaper.com With 17 homers on the year, Sounds first baseman Prince Fielder already has opposing pitchers afraid of his power. Soon, Fielder will have struck fear in the heart of the opposing infielders, too. On three separate trips to the base paths, Fielder came in hard to home plate twice and second base once during the Sounds? 9-3 victory over visiting Memphis. The second time Fielder came barreling into home in the seventh inning, he brushed past Redbirds catcher Brad Cresse. After he scored, Fielder got an earful from the Redbirds bench, who thought he tried to take out Cresse. The 21-year-old Fielder responded by storming out of the dugout and letting loose a spectacular tirade directed at the Redbirds bench. Some members of the Sounds speculated it was Memphis pitcher Adam Wainwright who yelled at Fielder. ?I?m playing the game hard,? said Fielder, who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. ?[Cresse] is on the plate and I?m not looking at the ball because I?m tagging. If he?s on the front of the plate, it?s one thing, but I?m trying to do whatever I can to help my team. ?I heard them talking, so I came out to see what?s the problem and I heard them saying some things I didn?t appreciate.? Fielder had to be restrained by several teammates and was ejected for leaving the dugout. After Fielder?s fireworks, the Sounds blew open the game when catcher Mike Rivera jacked a two-run homer which gave Nashville its six-run lead. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Sounds and gave the team a four-game lead over Memphis in the PCL American North Division. Sounds starter Jeff Housman had a stellar overall game. Housman had one stretch in which he fanned six Redbirds in a row. Then in the fourth inning, Housman hit his first ever homer as a professional, a two-run shot. Housman (4-7) ended up earning the victory, going five innings and allowing three earned runs. The Sounds drew first blood in the bottom of the second inning. That?s when Tony Zuniga, Rivera and Chris Barnwell each hit consecutive singles. The Sounds added a run in the third inning when Nelson Cruz doubled home Fielder. On the play, Fielder appeared headed for a collision at home plate with Cresse. But the relay throw came in high, and Cresse pulled a matador to get out of the way of the 260-pound Fielder. In the fifth inning, Fielder struck again when he doubled and slid hard into second base where Redbirds second baseman Bo Hart was waiting for the throw. Housman was removed after the fifth inning for Mike Adams. When Adams came out to the mound to warm up, he appeared to injure his side and was removed. That?s when Clint Weibl came in and threw three shutout innings out of the bullpen.
  9. Link while active, text follows: www.tennessean.com/apps/p...328/sports Fielder ejected in wild four-run seventh of win By MAURICE PATTON Staff Writer An eventful four-run seventh inning led the Nashville Sounds to a 9-3 victory over Memphis last night to open a four-game series. With Nashville ahead 5-3, Prince Fielder scored from third base on Tony Zuniga's single to right field. Anticipating a throw from Raul Gonzalez, Fielder came in hard at the plate and made contact with Memphis catcher Brad Cresse. The Redbirds dugout took exception to the contact, considering the throw didn't come to the plate. Fielder, who had gone into the Nashville dugout, responded to the Redbirds by returning to the field and had to be restrained by on-deck hitter Mike Rivera. Fielder was ejected for leaving the dugout. "They had some people talking; I asked 'em to come out," said the 6-foot, 260-pound son of former major league slugger Cecil Fielder. "I didn't appreciate it, especially them saying I don't know how to play the game. I was born into the game. Maybe he ought to do a little research." Rivera tomahawked a Josh Kinney pitch for a three-run home run and a six-run lead. That helped extend the Sounds' lead to four games over the Redbirds. "They were trying to protect their teammate," Nashville Manager Frank Kremblas said of the Memphis dugout. "But the thing they've got to think about is, Prince can't see the (throw from Gonzalez) get cut. If he made contact with Cresse, it was barely." Jeff Housman struck out six consecutive hitters en route to his first win in his last four outings. He added a two-run homer in the fourth inning, his first pro homer. "Last year at Huntsville, I struck out eight to start the game," Housman said. "Once you get a couple in a row, you get your confidence up, and I was locating well." Hard-hitting pitchers: Housman's home run was the fourth by a Sounds pitcher in two years. Earlier this year, Justin Lehr homered at Albuquerque. In 2004, John VanBenschoten homered at Memphis and Sean Burnett at Colorado Springs. Short stint: Mike Adams relieved Housman after five innings but left before facing a batter. After one of his warmup pitches, Adams grabbed his left side. Adams threw one more pitch, then came off the field while still holding his side. He was replaced by Clint Weibl. Still sidelined: Nashville reliever Jeff Bennett remains at home due to flu-like symptoms, according to the Sounds medical staff. "Jeff was certainly being discussed (for a callup) before he came up with this illness," said Milwaukee assistant GM Gord Ash. "It's going to keep him out for a couple of weeks." Ks for days: With double-digit strikeout totals in four of their last six games, Sounds pitchers lead the Pacific Coast League with 749. The staff is on pace for 1,123 strikeouts ? which would break the franchise record of 1,080, set during the 2002 season. Runnin' wild: Nashville has converted 28 of its last 35 stolen-base attempts, pushing the team to the top of the PCL in that category with 110. Fresno is second with 90. Game at a glance ? Winning pitcher: Housman (4-7). ? Big stick: Zuniga, 3-for-5, double, two RBIs, two runs. ? How they won: Fielder matched Zuniga's three hits, with Nelson Cruz and Rivera adding a pair of hits. ? What they said: "The level of testosterone is always up. So when you're getting yelled at, it's not unusual to yell back." ? Kremblas, on the seventh-inning ejection of Fielder. ? Tonight's pitchers: Sounds ? RHP Rick Helling (8-3, 4.27 ERA). Redbirds ? RHP Adam Wainwright (6-6, 3.71).

The first-place Nashville Sounds snapped their three-game skid with a 9-3 victory over the division-rival Memphis Redbirds on Monday evening in the opener of a four-game series at Greer Stadium. With the victory, Nashville (53-43) extended its lead to four games over the Redbirds in the PCL American Conference Northern Division and recorded its fourth victory in five contests against Memphis this season. Nashville starting pitcher Jeff Housman allowed three runs over five innings to earn his second victory in his last 11 starts and belted a two-run homer to help his own cause. Prince Fielder and Tony Zuniga led the Sounds? offense with three-hit efforts and Mike Rivera drove in three runs during a 2-for-3 evening. The Sounds grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on shortstop Chris Barnwell?s one-out RBI single. Nashville doubled the lead in the third with a two-out rally against Memphis starter Chris Gissell. Fielder singled to left before coming around to score on a Nelson Cruz RBI double to left-center. The two-bagger gave Cruz a hit in 13 of his first 14 games with Nashville. Memphis halved the lead in the top of the fourth when Brandon Berger singled home Scott Seabol. Housman helped his own cause in a big way in the bottom of the frame, belting a two-run homer to right off Gissell. The longball was the first of his professional career and extended the Nashville lead to 4-1. Audio Link to Jeff Housman's Home Run: www.nashvillesounds.com/a...207-18.mp3 Redbirds right fielder Raul Gonzalez matched Housman?s feat in the fifth, drilling a two-run homer of his own off the left-hander down the left field line to score Bo Hart, who had walked. Fielder, who continued his recent hot hitting with a 3-for-4 evening, doubled to lead off the bottom of the fifth and scored on Zuniga?s RBI two-bagger two batters later to up the Sounds? lead to 5-3. Nashville put up a four-spot in the home half of the seventh to put the game out of reach at 9-3. Rivera delivered the big blow when he tomahawked a Josh Kinney pitch deep to left for a three-run homer, his fifth tater of the year. Housman (4-7) earned his first victory in four starts after allowing three runs and matching his season-high with six strikeouts, which came consecutively from the first to third innings, over five innings of work. Gissell (7-6) took the loss after surrendering five runs on eight hits over five frames. Former Redbird Clint Weibl delivered three scoreless innings of relief for the Sounds against his former club before Jose Capellan hurled a perfect ninth to close it out. The teams continue the series with a 7 p.m. meeting on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Rick Helling (8-3, 4.27) will make the start for the Sounds and face Memphis right-hander Adam Wainwright (6-6, 3.71). 11. Final: Huntsville 9, Mobile (Padres) 2 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link for David Bradley photo, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/s...newsId=670 Stars Start Road Trip With Comeback Win David Bradley worked seven strong innings and Vinny Rottino collected three hits and knocked in three runs to lead Huntsville past Mobile 9-2 Monday night in the opener of a four-game set at Hank Aaron Stadium. The Stars snapped a two-game slide and improved to 13-11 in the second half of the season, while the BayBears dropped their eighth straight contest to fall to 5-15 and remain winless since July 3. Huntsville stays in third place in the North Division one game behind front-running Carolina, which defeated Chattanooga, and a half game behind West Tenn, which shutout Tennessee, who fell into fourth place, a game and a half off the pace. Mobile starter Brian Whitaker, in his fourth start against the Stars this season, blanked the visitors on two singles through the first five innings but yielded three runs and the lead in the sixth. Tony Gwynn, Jr. started the rally with a leadoff bunt single, advanced to second base on a single by Kennard Bibbs and scored, along with Bibbs, when Rottino tripled into the alley in left-center field. Brad Nelson grounded out for the first out of the inning but Brandon Gemoll followed with a single to center field through a drawn-in infield to put Huntsville on top to stay at 3-2. Whitaker lasted seven innings in his longest start against Huntsville and suffered the loss after allowing three runs on eight hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Whitaker has received a total of four runs in his four outings against the Stars and has been tagged with three of his 10 losses by the visitors. The Stars added a run in the eighth inning and five more in the ninth, as Mobile?s defense melted down and committed four errors in the final two frames. Rottino and Enrique Cruz singled home runs in the ninth, while a fielding error by former big league infielder Jesse Garcia, his second in two games with Mobile, allowed another run to score and a throwing by third baseman Corey Smith permitted two runs to score. The Stars have now won their last four games and six of the nine played at Mobile and lead the season series 10-3. Whitaker started the BayBears two-run third inning rally with a single and eventually came in to score on a bases loaded single by Paul McAnulty that put the home team up 1-0. Ronnie Merrill knocked in a run with a two-out single later in the inning before Joe Gerber struck out for the second of four times in the game to end the frame. Luke Carlin led off the fourth with a single and Bradley proceeded to retire the next nine hitters before Carlin singled again and wound up getting stranded at third in the seventh. The right-hander earned his fourth win of the year after his longest outing during which he yielded two runs, one earned, on seven hits and fanned a season-best seven. Bradley had lasted just one inning in his last start eight days ago at Mississippi after giving up four runs. Brett Evert took over and retired all six hitters he faced to earn his first save since joining the Stars. The series continues Tuesday night with right-hander Dennis Sarfate returning from the disabled list to make the start for the Stars against BayBears? right-hander Mike Thompson. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. 12. Final: Fort Myers (Twins) 3, Brevard County 2 Brevard County Site Game Summary: MANATEES LATE RALLY FALLS SHORT The Manatees staged an epic comeback in the late innings of Monday night's game, only to be foiled in losing to the Ft. Myers Miracle 3-2. Ft. Myers took the early lead after control problems forced Manatees starter Ben Diggins to walk the bases loaded in the first inning. A two-out double by Brock Peterson emptied the bases and proved to be all the run support the Miracle would need. Diggins would pitch the second inning before a trio of Manatees, Forrest Martin, Darwin Soto, and Brian Wolfe, shut out the Miracle for the rest of the game. It got interesting in the bottom of the ninth after the Manatees staged a late rally. With two outs and no one on base, Wandel Campana singled to left. This brought Robby Deevers to the plate, where he promptly singled to right to put runners on the corners. With Steve Sollmann batting, Miracle reliever Jannio Gutierrez balked to score Campana from third. Gutierrez managed to regain his composure and induced Sollmann into a game-ending ground out to second. The loss Monday night combined with St. Lucie's victory over Clearwater forces a two-way tie for first place in the Eastern Division. The Manatees look to regain sole possession of first place at Space Coast Stadium on Wednesday night at 7:00 pm (6:00 Central) against the Daytona Cubs. 13. Final: Hagerstown (Mets) 8, West Virginia 2 Link while active, text follows: www.wvgazette.com/section...2005071828 Suns snap Power streak The Hagerstown Suns used a big four-run fourth inning on the way to an 8-2 win over the West Virginia Power Monday night at Appalachian Power Park. The Suns took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first, when James Burt singled in Matt Fisher and Ambiorix Concepcion. The Power tied the game at 2-all after Ryan Braun and Grant Richardson hit back-to-back two-out homers off Suns starter Michael Devaney in the bottom of the first. Things would remain tied until the top of the fourth, when Hagerstown put a four-spot on Power starter Greg Kloosterman (3-13) to take a 6-2 lead and chase him from the game after four innings. Burt and Russ Triplett hit consecutive doubles to start the inning, giving the Suns a 3-2 lead. After a strikeout and a walk to Yury Santana, Kloosterman fired a wild pitch that got away from catcher Clay Blevins, allowing the runners to move to second and third. Next up, Carlos Gomez reached on an error by second baseman Hernan Iribarren that allowed Triplett and Santana to score, making it a 5-2 game. After stealing second base, Gomez would come around to score on a single by Concepcion, making it 6-2 Suns. Kloosterman got Mike Carp on a groundout to end the inning, but that would be the end of the day for the Power starter. Reliever Derek Decarlo came in to start the fifth inning. West Virginia just missed a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fifth when Alcides Escobar was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second on a single to right by Braun. Hagerstown increased its lead to six in the top of the ninth on Mike Carp?s two-run homer to left off Robert Hinton, making it 8-2 Suns. Concepcion was 3-for-5 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI to lead Hagerstown. Braun was 3-for-4, raising his batting average to .244 after struggling to start his Power career. Devaney (6-1) pitched six strong innings, fanning eight to get the win for the Suns (9-15). Reliver Joseph Serfass pitched three scoreless innings to pick up his second save of the season. Kloosterman went four innings, surrendering three earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts to take the loss for the Power (12-12). The loss snaps West Virginia?s season-long four game winning streak and moves West Virginia back to .500 for the second half of the season. The Power will play host to Hagerstown tonight to close out the four-game home-and-home series. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. (6:05 Central). The Power will throw right-handed pitcher Josh Baker (1-4, 6.79). 14. Final: Helena 12, Ogden (Dodgers) 3 Link while active, text follows: www.standard.net/standard/56612/# Hot as Helena By Aaron Morton Ogden Standard-Examiner staff OGDEN -- Tomorrow is another day. That was Ogden Raptors manager Juan Bustabad's mantra after his team got hammered by the Helena Brewers 12-3 Monday night at Lindquist Field. One could hear a batting glove drop in the clubhouse after the game as the Pioneer League-leading Brewers beat the Raptors in just about every element of the game. Helena raced out to a 7-0 lead and never looked back, reeling off 20 hits on the way to handing Ogden its worst loss of the season. "We just got to erase it," Bustabad said. "It's only one game; you can't just drop your head -- keep your head up." Keep your head up -- and get a lot of hits. The Raptors' bats have hit a brick wall. They were shut out Sunday in Missoula and were blanked until the fifth inning Monday. They did get eight hits, but they were well scattered. Ogden also took a beating on the mound. Helena's batters -- especially Brendan Katin and Matt Gamel -- pummeled the Raptors hurlers with two doubles and two singles each. Katin and Gamel, the No. 4 and No. 5 hitters, combined for four doubles and four singles. "They can hit; we know that," Bustabad said. "You just got to pitch better, and it all starts with your starting pitcher." Marlon Arias, who had the team's second-best ERA (3.48) among starters going into the game, gave up eight hits and seven runs -- four earned. Juan Rivera's error in the first inning allowed three unearned runs and put the Raptors in a 3-0 hole. Helena extended the lead to 4-0 in the second on Ned Yost's first home run of the season. After two solid innings, Arias started to struggle again, giving up a home run over the right-field wall that was crushed by Helena center fielder Charlie Fermaint. The funniest moment of the game in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Jason Mooneyham hit a come-backer to pitcher Kevin Roberts, who threw the ball to first base for what looked like an easy out. However, the first baseman Yost lost the ball in the sun, and it went right by him. When the next batter, James McDonald, hit another grounder right to Roberts, he took no chances, running from the mound all the way to first. Those plays were nearly topped in the fifth. After Soto and David Sutherland got back-to-back one-out singles, third baseman Russ Mitchell hit pitcher Ronny Malave in the rear end with a hard-hit grounder. The ball rolled to the first-base line where Mitchell had to stop and start on his way to first base to avoid the tag, allowing Soto to score. B.J. Richmond then drove in Sutherland with a sacrifice fly. ***Homers lead to Brewers victory By IR Staff Helena took the lead and ran away with a 12-3 win over Ogden Monday. The Brewers had 20 hits on the night while Ogden could only manage eight. Three runs were scored by Helena in the first and another two were scored in the second to take the lead 5-0. Helena's first baseman Ned Yost got his first home run of the year in the top of the second on a pitch by Marlon Arias with no one on and no outs. Charlie Fermaint of the Brewers hit a homer in the top of the fifth to add six to his season total. Fermaint's home run off of Arias was also a solo shot. Helena's Brendan Katin doubled to left field and then scored on Matt Gamel's line-drive double to right field. Katin has five doubles on the season, while Gamel has six. Ogden would score their first two runs in the fifth, but couldn't manage to comeback. Katin and Gamel both had two doubles on the night. Gamel had three RBI. Angel Salome added two RBI for 37 on the season and Fermaint now has 21. The Brewers will continue play against Ogden today with the first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. (8:05 Central). 15. PHOENIX (AP) - Arizonans usually just shrug when the mercury climbs beyond 100 degrees and the breeze feels like a giant hair dryer pointed at your face. But lately, even the most seasoned desert dwellers are complaining about the blowtorch heat. Temperatures have been above average every day since June 29 in Phoenix, where the normal high in the middle of July is a sizzling 107. ''This has gone on a little too long,'' said Joe Della Rocca, a 41-year-old Arizona native. ''All I know is Vancouver sounds fabulous right now.'' The city hit 116 degrees on Sunday, two degrees above the old record for the date, set in 1936. Phoenix was almost mild compared with the Colorado River Valley, where Bullhead City reached 124 on Sunday and Needles, Calif., hit 125. Even nighttime readings were no comfort over the weekend. Monday morning's low in Phoenix was 91. ''At the heat of the day, at 2 p.m., almost the whole town is dead,'' said Yvonne Morales, owner of the Baskin Robbins 31 Flavors in Bullhead City, across the Colorado River from the air-conditioned casinos of Laughlin, Nev. ''The streets are pretty bare because you're insane to come out in this.'' Last week, at the urging of a radio station in Chicago, Morales put a scoop of ice cream on a sidewalk to see how long it would take to melt. It took just 8 seconds for the scoop to turn to goo. The disc jockeys in Chicago ''were laughing at us,'' she said. Police in Phoenix got reports of seven possible heat-related deaths during the weekend, said Sgt. Randy Force. Six of the victims were homeless, and the seventh was an 81-year-old woman. Phoenix usually has five to 10 deaths in a whole year, he said. The city should see ''a little cooling'' Tuesday, when the high is forecast at 113, the weather service said.

  23. Link while active, text follows: www.herald-mail.com/?modu...ormat=html Suns fall in 14 by DAN KAUFFMAN kauffman@herald-mail.com Errors on routine plays. Bonehead baserunning mistakes. Consecutive balks. Willie Mays Bobblehead Day turned into Bobble The Game Away Day for the Hagerstown Suns. Two walks and two balks by Suns reliever Jose Gomez helped West Virginia score three runs in the 14th inning, and the Power came away with a close but ugly 8-5 victory Sunday. Marcelo Perez relieved Gomez and gave up Alcides Escobar's RBI single and Ryan Braun's two-run single. The Suns and Power combined for five errors - all in the first three innings. West Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the first on Hernan Iribarren's home run to right-center field against Suns starter Brandon Nall, who was making his first professional appearance. The homer came one pitch after Nall, a submarine-style right-hander who signed with the New York Mets as a free agent out of LSU, threw what looked to be strike three on the outside corner, but was called a ball. The Power made it 3-0 in the second, through no fault of Nall's. The Suns turned two rather routine plays into errors, as shortstop Ryan Coultas booted William Lewis' leadoff grounder and Carlos Gomez dropped a fly ball to deep center. However, the Suns rallied to tie the game at 3-3 in the third when West Virginia's defense went in the toilet. First baseman Grant Richardson dropped an easy throw which would have retired Corey Coles for the second out, third baseman Josh Murray got eaten up by a tough hop on Gomez's grounder, and catcher Carlos Corporan had a pitch squirt away from him to his right, then threw the ball away trying to throw out Coles at third, leading to a run. Mike Carp made it hurt real good with a monstrous two-run homer onto the parking lot beyond the right-field wall. The Power added runs in the fifth, when Braun doubled off Nall and later scored on Nall's wild pitch, and the eighth on Adam Mannon's solo homer off reliever Kevin Mannix, who was otherwise sharp in his 3 2/3 innings of relief, allowing two hits and striking out four. The Suns scored a run in the seventh on singles by Carlos Gomez (on a bunt), Concepcion and Psomas, and added another in the eighth when Derran Watts blooped a single leading off, Russ Triplett walked, Coultas' sacrifice bunt moved both runners up a base and Coles grounded to short to score Watts. Though the Suns' aggressiveness paid off in the third when it led to Corporan's throwing error, too much aggressiveness burned them twice. In the fifth, Carlos Gomez got caught too far off second on a line drive that was caught in left field, and in the seventh, Coles rounded second too far on Gomez's bunt single and got caught in a rundown. Nall went 4 1/3 innings in his pro debut, allowing four hits, three walks and four runs (two earned) while striking out four. In a scary moment, Nall hit Hasan Rasheed in the head with a pitch in the fifth. Rasheed was able to walk off on his own power. Nall hit two batters and threw three wild pitches. ***Charleston Daily Mail: Surging Power returns home It took a while -- in more ways than one -- but the West Virginia Power is coming home after a couple of firsts in its 2005 South Atlantic League baseball season. The Power, which begins a seven-game homestand at Appalachian Power Park tonight at 7:05 (6:05 Central), outlasted Hagerstown 8-5 in 14 innings Sunday in Maryland. That lifted West Virginia (12-11 in the SAL second half) over .500 for the first time this season. It also brought the Power's winning streak to four games, a season best. Manager Ramon Aviles' club has won six of its last seven, as the Suns return the visit for a two-game stand at APP. Lakewood then visits Charleston's new ballpark for a five-game series. The Power began the first half 0-6 and finished 20 games below .500. Getting to the four-game winning streak took almost five hours Sunday, and came in unusual fashion on the mound. Justin Barnes went the final seven innings in relief, allowing one run and three hits, and raising his record to 6-1. The Power had 10 hits, including two apiece by Alcides Escobar and Ryan Braun. Hernan Iribarren went only 1-for-8 for West Virginia, but the hit was a first-inning solo homer. Adam Mannon also homered for the Power. Hagerstown pitchers walked 12 Power hitters, but West Virginia made winning difficult, stranding 16 runners. The Suns (8-15), who took the SAL's first-half Northern Division title, send right-hander mike Devaney (5-1) to the mound tonight against Power lefty Greg Kloosterman (3-12). The Power is home for 15 of its next 18 games. Following the homestand opening tonight, West Virginia goes to Lexington for a three-game series, then comes back home for four-game sets against Hickory and Asheville.
  24. Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/sports/huntsvi...amp;coll=1 Missed opportunities doom Stars against Mudcats Carolina claims 8-2 win to earn for 2nd straight victory By MATT NASCONE Times Staff Writer eintern@htimes.com Deputy Barney Fife could not save the Stars from dropping their second straight game in as many days Sunday. As Barney and Opie lookalikes gathered for Mayberry Night at Joe Davis Stadium, the Stars lost to the Carolina Mudcats 8-2. After a leadoff hit by Tony Gwynn Jr. in the first inning, it took the Stars four innings to muster another hit against Carolina starting pitcher Josh Johnson. Johnson (8-4) pitched seven strong innings for the win. He allowed one run on five hits. He struck out five Stars and walked two. The Stars' Josh Habel (1-2) took the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits in four innings. He walked four batters and struck out two. Huntsville manager Don Money said missed scoring opportunities were the difference. "When you are playing a good team with a good pitcher you can't let good opportunities to score pass," Money said "When you let up two in the first, two in the second and two in the third and there is a good pitcher on the mound, that has a tendency to make the team go flat." Michael Tucker opened the scoring for the Mudcats in the second inning with a home run over left field, scoring Chris Bass. Reggie Abercrombie stretched the Mudcats' lead to 3-0 in the third inning with a solo home run over left field. Chris Bass followed with a double. Bass later scored on a single by Frank Moore. Bass finished 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Carolina's Jeremy Hermida scored on a passed ball in the fourth inning and Bass hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Jason Hill to push the lead to 6-0. Huntsville's Brandon Gemoll was stranded on second in the fifth inning as the three Stars following Gemoll were retired in order. Huntsville broke through in the seventh inning. The Stars loaded the bases as Vinny Rottino walked and Brad Nelson and Gemoll singled. Callix Crabbe singled to right field, plating Rottino for a 6-1 deficit. The Mudcats ended the threat as John Vanden Berg grounded into a double play. In the eighth inning, the Mudcats scored two unearned runs. After Crabbe booted a ground ball, Hermida and James Shanks scored on singles by Hill and Abercrombie. "That error hurt because the score went from 6-1 to 8-1," Money said. "You can see 6-1, but 8-1 with two innings to go is not good." Abercrombie went 2-for-4 at the plate, scored one run and drove in two. The Stars made a final push in the ninth inning. Nelson led off the inning with single. Crabbe singled Nelson across the plate. Crabbe knocked in both runs for the Stars in the game, batting 2-for-4. Money said he is not worried about the losing streak. "You can't worry about tonight, as long as you did your best that's all we ask," he said. "If you are 0-for-4 one night you will go 4-for-4 the next night, and that is the way you have to look at." "If you carry your offense into tomorrow, before you know it you have a mini-streak and you're 0-for-20. So you just go eat dinner and get on the bus tomorrow ready to start all over."
  25. Link while active, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....328/SPORTS Sounds' skid at three as offense falls short Only Fielder's HR prevents first shutout since early June By MAURICE PATTON Tennessean Staff Writer An uninspired effort left the Nashville Sounds on a three-game losing streak for the first time in more than a month following last night's 5-2 loss to visiting Albuquerque. The Sounds, who had not dropped three in a row since they were swept by Omaha June 4-7 at Greer Stadium, committed a pair of errors last night. Despite outhitting the Isotopes, Nashville was hitless in nine at-bats with runners in scoring position before Prince Fielder's two-out, two-run home run in the ninth inning broke up the potential shutout. "We're swinging at bad pitches in crucial counts," Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said following the game. "We've got guys trying to hit home runs that aren't even going to tie the game up. We need to look at ourselves in the mirror and figure out what kind of hitters we are." Fielder's homer, his 17th of the season and his second since returning from a 22-day stay in the majors, helped Nashville avoid its first shutout since Omaha blanked the Sounds 4-0 June 5. After the home run, Ryan Knox reached base on a single before Steve Scarborough struck out to end the game. "That's nice," Kremblas said of the late-game push. "But we've got to do better before the ninth inning when we're down 5-0. Our at-bats were horrible the whole series." The series loss masked the consistently solid pitching the Sounds got over the four games. Starter Gary Glover struck out seven in six innings and allowed just three earned runs last night. Relievers Kane Davis and Mitch Stetter combined to throw three shutout innings. With Memphis' 7-1 win over New Orleans, the Sounds' lead in the Pacific Coast League American Conference Northern Division is now three games over the Redbirds, who come to town for a four-game series beginning tonight. Makin' moves: Former Brewers pitcher Tommy Phelps was added to the Sounds' active roster prior to yesterday's game. Phelps, a 31-year-old left-hander, was 0-2 with a 4.63 ERA and one save in 29 relief appearances with Milwaukee. The transaction was the 32nd of the season for Nashville ? still 42 less than the team made through the same date last season. Additionally, the move gets the Nashville roster back to the 24-man maximum for the first time since June 17. The Sounds lost both Kevin Orie and Chad Paronto following that night's game and have played with fewer than the limit since. Game at a glance ? Losing pitcher: Glover (2-1). ? Big stick: Fielder, 1-for-2, HR. ? How they lost: The Sounds outhit Albuquerque 10-8, but went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Glover allowed a pair of unearned runs in his five-run total over six innings as the Nashville defense committed two errors. ? What they said: "I don't know if we're paying attention. You'd hope you'd have three days off and come back more fresh mentally." ? Kremblas referring to the All-Star break. ? Tonight's pitchers: Sounds ? LHP Jeff Housman (3-7, 5.28 ERA). Redbirds ? RHP Chris Gissell (7-5, 2.62). Maurice Patton covers the Nashville Sounds for The Tennessean. He can be reached at mopatton@tennessean.com.
