  3. Link while active, text follows: www.billingsgazette.com/i...stangs.inc Mustangs fall to Helena in 9th By BILL BIGHAUS Of The Gazette Staff On a sweltering Friday night at Cobb Field, the Helena Brewers had to sweat it out for 10 innings before punching out another dramatic victory. No. 9 batter Agustin Septimo blasted a two-run home run to right-center with two outs in the 10th to lift the Pioneer League's top hitting team to a come-from-behind 10-8 conquest over the Billings Mustangs. The first-place Brewers, who entered the game with a .335 batting average, improved their season record to 14-3 and opened up a four-game lead over Billings, 10-7, in the Northern Division standings. Helena, which has won its last three games, led early, and then had to rally from an 8-6 deficit in the ninth inning to beat Billings for the third time in four meetings this season. "No matter what the score, they just keep battling and battling," Helena manager Ed Sedar said of his hard-hitting Brewers. "It's not unusual to have a game like this against Billings - and it won't be the last time we go at it like this." Stephen Chapman walked with one out in the top of the 10th. After Carlos Gallardo popped out to the shortstop for the second out, Septimo, hitting .438, crushed a 1-ball, no-strike pitch from Billings' reliever Jose Rojas, for the game-winning blow. "I had Chapman running," said Sedar afterwards. "If it (Septimo's hit) was going to fall in I was thinking we'd get at least one (run). I actually didn't see the ball go out. I was watching Chapman." There was no doubt about Septimo's blast. Helena stroked 12 hits in the 3-hour, 27-minute game - and eight of them went for extra bases. The game started in 97-degree heat and as the sizzling night rolled on, the Brewers rapped five doubles, one triple and two home runs. Billings, which also amassed 12 hits, did get a runner on base in the bottom of the 10th and had Adam Rosales - who belted a go-ahead three-run homer in the sixth inning - at the plate. But Richard Breshears, the Helena reliever, struck out Rosales swinging on three straight pitches. Helena led 3-0 in the first inning and 6-2 in the fourth. A six-run sixth inning - highlighted by Rosales' three-run moon shot to left-center - put Billings in charge 8-6. The Brewers, however, scored two runs against Billings' relief ace Rojas, in the ninth and then won with Septimo's first home run of the season in the 10th. "Helena has a very good offensive ballclub," said Billings manager Rick Burleson. "We had a nice rally ourselves with a six-run sixth and had them down and basically had the guy on the mound that we wanted to have on the mound and we just didn't get it done tonight. "We left a couple pitches out over the plate and they whacked it," Burleson said. "With good ballclubs, even at this level, you can't throw the ball down the middle." Ronny Malave, who pitched 2 2/3 shutout innings of relief before giving way to Breshears in the 10th, was the winning pitcher for the Brewers. He is 2-0. Breshears, with two strikeouts in the 10th, collected his second save. Billings' Rojas, who entered the game tied for the league lead with four saves, suffered his second loss. He pitched a total of two innings - covering portions of the eighth, ninth and 10th innings, allowing four earned runs on three hits. "Unfortunately that's twice in a row that he hasn't got it done, as far as closing it," said Burleson. "But he's got one of our best young arms and he's going to get more chances." In the ninth, with Helena trailing 8-6, Septimo led off and was hit by a 3-2 pitch. He quickly scored on a triple to the wall in right-center by Darren Ford. Charlie Fermaint followed by singling to center field to score Ford and tie the game. Helena jumped ahead 3-0 in the first inning on a run-scoring double by Angel Salome and a two-run homer to left by Brendan Katin. Katin's fifth HR of the season traveled over 10th Avenue and into the front yard of a house. Billings got a run back in the second on an RBI-single to left by Kenny Lewis. A double over the centerfielder's head in the third by Mayker Sandoval pulled the Mustangs to within 3-2. Helena used a double by Michael Bell in the fourth to move in front 4-2. Four batters later, Ford delivered a two-run single to make it 6-2. The Mustangs, in taking their first lead, scored six runs on five hits in sending 10 batters to the plate in the sixth. Sandoval had a run-scoring single, and teammate Ben Blumenthal later cracked a two-run single to make it a 6-5 contest. With the bases loaded and two out, Rosales, a .321 hitter, cut loose for his second home run of the season - the go-ahead, three-run shot. But Helena ended up winning with a long ball of its own four innings later. "We've just got to keep coming out and battling and hopefully we can get this thing turned around a little bit," said Burleson. "I think we've got a good ballclub. We just haven't put it all together. We've got to keep grinding it out." The Mustangs and Brewers will wrap up their two-game set tonight with a 7:05 start (8:05 Central) at Cobb Field. Nashville Pre-Game Audio with Manager Frank Kremblas: www.nashvillesounds.com/a...%207-8.mp3 Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Rick Helling, text follows -- www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=1678 Sounds Derail Express, 4-1, For 50th WinROUND ROCK, Tex. ? The Nashville Sounds won their first-ever meeting with the Round Rock Express on Friday evening at the Dell Diamond, posting a 4-1 victory in the opener of a three-game series. With the victory, Nashville (50-39) maintained its 3 ½ game lead in the PCL American Conference Northern Division. Right-hander Rick Helling registered his team-leading eighth quality start and outfielder Nelson Cruz continued his hot hitting with a 3-for-3 effort to lead the Sounds to victory. The Sounds offense started quickly, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Warren Morris crushed a 2-1 pitch over the right field wall for a one-out solo homer off Express starter Brandon Duckworth. The infielder?s fourth tater of the year gave Nashville a 1-0 lead. Duckworth didn?t do himself any favors later in the frame either, issuing four consecutive walks including back-to-back bases-loaded passes to Tony Zuniga and Julio Mosquera to up the Sounds? lead to 3-0. Former Sounds first baseman Carlos Rivera put Round Rock on the board in the bottom of the second, slugging a one-out solo homer to right off Helling. It was Rivera?s eighth roundtripper of the season. Cruz padded the Nashville lead in the fifth with an RBI double into the left field corner to score Corey Hart and make it a 4-1 game. With his solid evening, Cruz extended his hitting streak to nine games, all of his contests since joining Nashville. Audio Link of Nelson Cruz' RBI Double: www.nashvillesounds.com/a...%207-8.mp3 Helling (7-3) pulled into a tie with Justin Lehr for the team victory lead after allowing only one run on five hits while striking out a season-best seven over seven innings. Duckworth (3-3) took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) in his six frames. Jose Capellan worked a scoreless ninth for Nashville to pick up his fifth save of the season. The teams continue the series with a 7:05 p.m. meeting on Saturday night. Right-hander Justin Lehr (7-6, 4.30) takes the hill for Nashville to face a yet-to-be-named Express hurler.
  5. Is 19-year-old Venezuelan RHP Ronny Malave (Helena) developing into something promising? Consider this: for all the Brewers' efforts trotting Latin pitcher after Latin pitcher on to rookie league mounds in recent years, exactly one (40-man roster RHP Luis Pena of Brevard County) is pitching above rookie Helena at this time. That is almost mind-boggling.

  7. Nice to see Salome hitting again tonight. Not nice to see him with his 5th error of the season. Ugh -- Angel just brought the tying run to the plate because he misfired to first base on a dropped third-strike. Make that error # 6, which of course doesn't include passed balls. Remember when Brewers management mentioned that a Maryvale catcher was having trouble handling Ben Sheets in his rehab appearance? Hmmm... Helena hangs on, by the way...
  8. colbyjack, have you been in touch with anyone at Weatherford in Texas? A web search doesn't show 11th round RHP Brent Allar with a commitment to a four-year school, although I imagine he probably has one in hand. Probably the first-day draft pick we know the least about, just wondering if he'll be inked by fall, as he won't be a draft-and-follow candidate.

  12. Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link for Dana Eveland photo, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/s...newsId=660 Eveland's Excellence Continues in Stars WinDana Eveland worked eight strong innings and Brad Nelson hit a home run in Huntsville?s 3-2 win over Mississippi Friday night in the opener of a four-game set at Trustmark Park. The Stars bounced back from a 19-15 loss 24 hours before to improve to 9-8 in the second half but remained a game behind Carolina in the North Division after the Mudcats 3-2 win in 11 innings over West Tenn, while the Braves dipped to 8-9 in the half. The Stars won for just the second time in their last 12 meetings with Mississippi and Eveland has been the winning pitcher in both victories. Wes Timmons led off the home first with a single, moved to second base on a single by Josh Burrus in his first double-A at-bat and advanced to third base on a fly ball out by Iker Franco for the second out of the inning. Burrus then broke for second base with Jon Schuerholz at the plate and intentionally found himself in a rundown to make the Stars decide what to do with Timmons, who had started toward the plate. First baseman Brandon Gemoll threw behind Timmons to third baseman Vinny Rottino, who threw to the plate but Timmons dived headfirst safely in ahead of the tag by catcher John Vanden Berg to make it 1-0 Braves. Nelson led off the second inning and blasted a 2-0 offering from Braves? starter Matt Coenen over the wall in left field for his third home run in nine games with the Stars. Nelson doubled with one out in the fourth and scored when Enrique Cruz doubled to put the visitors on top 2-1. Ben Van Iderstine would single with two outs in the frame to drive in Cruz to push the Huntsville margin to 3-1. Schuerholz doubled with one out in the fourth, only the third extra-base hit allowed by Eveland in his last eight starts, and was balked to third base. Onil Joseph flied out to shallow right for the second out of the inning before Carlos Duran hit a ground ball that was fielded by Gemoll but his throw to Eveland covering was errant and allowed Schuerholz to score to cut the visitors lead to 3-2. Eveland worked out of trouble in the fifth by fanning Burrus and retiring Scott Thorman on a ground out with runners at first and second base and one out and in the sixth by getting Luis Hernandez to line out to Gemoll with runners at second and third base and two outs. The southpaw induced Joseph to bounce into an inning-ending double play in the eighth with runners at first and second and one out. Jerome Gamble took over in the ninth and retired the side in order, with two strikeouts, to earn his third save of the season. The right-hander had not pitched since May 13 at Montgomery due to lingering elbow problems. Eveland yielded eight hits, struck out eight and walked only one in his longest outing of the season. Each of Eveland?s last seven wins has followed Stars losses and he has won seven consecutive decisions dating back to May 30. He has allowed only 10 earned runs over 51 2/3 innings covering his last eight starts and has not lost since May 25 at Carolina. The series continues Saturday night with right-hander Glenn Woolard taking the mound against Braves left-hander Brian O?Connor. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

  14. West Virginia Site Game Summary: POWER COME FROM BEHIND TO BEAT THE SUNSHagerstown, MD ? The Hagerstown Suns held the West Virginia Power scoreless for six innings of Friday night?s contest in Hagerstown, but the Power scored four runs down the stretch and went on to beat the Suns by the final score of 4-3. Derran Watts drove in the first run of the game on a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the second inning to give the Suns an early 1-0 lead. The Suns took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Ryan Coultas delivered an RBI single. In the top of the seventh inning, Nestor Corredor delivered a clutch two-out, three-run double to give the Power their first lead of the game. In the top of the eighth inning Grant Richardson hit a solo shot, his seventh home run of the season to give the Power a 4-2 advantage. The Suns scored the final run in the bottom of the eighth inning on Ambiorix Concepcion?s RBI single. Ben Stanczyk worked a perfect bottom half of the ninth inning to slam the door on the Suns. The Power are 6-9 in the second half after the victory and the Suns move to 4-11 with the loss. 20. Minor league all-stars: Chris Coste (IL) Jeff Leifer (IL) Mike Coolbaugh (PCL) Craig Breslow (Southern) Robinson Cancel (Texas) The list of current minor leaguers that were originally signed by the Brewers, were released, and are now thriving in another organization begins and ends with LH reliever Breslow, still only 23 years old and excelling in his first taste of AA in the Padres' system. In other words, the Brewers rarely let one of their own get away before they make sure they've tapped any potential. Craig Breslow's 2005 stats: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...pid=444520 Career numbers prior to 2005: www.thebaseballcube.com/p...slow.shtml Yes, the High Desert ERA was ridiculous, and San Diego coaches have his walk total under control, but LH pitchers who allow fewer hits than innings and have more strike outs than innings shouldn't be released at that stage in their careers. There were half a dozen more "deserving" candidates for release on that Maverick squad last summer. Kudos to Craig on the All-Star gig -- hopefully the Padres are considering him as "their" Mitch Stetter-type prospect. And thankfully, the Brewers haven't allowed others to walk away in such a manner...
  21. Tom Haudricourt in the Journal-Sentinel: Farm doings: The Brewers switched left-handed relief pitchers in their system, sending Andy Pratt from Class AAA Nashville to Class AA Huntsville and promoting Mitch Stetter. Pratt was 4-4 with an 8.35 ERA in 23 appearances (eight starts) and had allowed eight earned runs in 3 1/3 innings in his last four outings. Stetter, named earlier to the Southern League All-Star Game, was 2-3 with a 2.61 ERA and eight saves in 32 games with Huntsville. The Brewers think he has a chance to be a situational reliever in the majors at some point. Mark McCarter, columnist for the Huntsville Times, passed along the story of how Stetter was informed of his promotion. After the Stars' game Wednesday, manager Don Money called a team meeting and asked Stetter to stand up. Very solemnly, Money told Stetter that he had bad news about the Southern League All-Star Game; that the votes were recounted and Stetter didn't make it. After Stetter bought into it, Money said, "Nah, the real reason you're not going to the All-Star Game is you're going to Triple-A." The Brewers also made a position switch at Nashville, moving Corey Hart from right field to left and newly acquired Nelson Cruz from left field to right. Cruz has been on fire since moving up from Huntsville, batting .435 with three home runs and six RBI in seven games. Hart has been red-hot for more than a month - he batted .413 in June - and is riding a 15-game hitting streak. The flip-flop apparently was made because Cruz has a stronger throwing arm (eight assists in Huntsville), more suitable for right field. Huntsville has encountered pitching problems with right-hander Dennis Sarfate going on the disabled list with a blister problem and oft-injured lefty Manny Parra being shut down with shoulder soreness. Parra, considered one of the better pitching prospects in the system, has suffered shoulder problems in the past, which makes it a cause for concern.
  22. Corey Hart for Player of Month, and... Brevard County pitcher Carlos Villanueva was named Brewers Minor League Pitcher of the Month after posting a miniscule 0.71 ERA in five starts . . . Villanueva did not record a decision but limited opponents to just two runs on 14 hits in 25.1 innings pitched . . . he issued four walks and struck out 26 . . . overall, Villanueva is 6-0 with a 1.89 ERA in 14 starts this season.
