Link while active, text follows: www.nashvillecitypaper.co...s_id=42191 Hits keep coming in Sounds? win By Mark McGee, Nashville City Paper Sports Correspondent The hits just kept on coming for the Nashville Sounds. Tuesday night in front of a sellout crowd of 10,139 fans at Greer Stadium, the Sounds pounded out 17 hits in an 11-3 rout of the Albuquerque Isotopes. Every Sounds starter, including pitcher Gary Glover, recorded at least one hit. Five Sounds players had multiple-hit games, with three getting three hits each. Kevin Orie led the way for the Sounds with a home run and three runs batted in among his three hits. Catcher Julio Mosquera, who was back with the Sounds from the parent Milwaukee Brewers after clearing waivers, had a double and one RBI among his three hits. Second baseman Warren Morris, making his first start and second appearance for the Sounds, pounded out three hits and also had one RBI. Morris, signed as a free agent this week after being released by the Cleveland Indians organization, is playing without a name on the back of his jersey. He returns to Greer as a Sounds player, having also been here in 2001. ?I wasn?t swinging too well before I got here, but I?ve felt good the last couple of days,? Morris said. ?Hopefully, I?ll keep going. They can leave my name off of my jersey if it works for hits.? For Nashville Manager Frank Kremblas, the start of the game was a mini-horror show. The Sounds made three errors in the top for the first inning, allowing Albuquerque to take a 2-0 lead on a pair of unearned runs. ?The first inning was gross,? Kremblas said. ?Our first inning defense was not good with two throwaways.? Orie cut the lead to one run with a home run to center to lead off the second inning. But the Sounds really awakened offensively in the fourth inning, scoring six runs on seven hits, five of them infield singles. The Sounds would add one more in the seventh and three in the eighth to ice the game. ?Sometimes you have to get the breaks,? Kremblas said. ?It?s nice when you do. We came back and did the job. We got some lucky choppers. We got some guys on and got some big hits with runners in scoring position.? Mark Little hit a solo home run for Albuquerque in the seventh. Glover, making his first start with the Sounds since being sent down from Milwaukee, earned the win allowing only the two unearned runs on three hits. He walked three and struck out eight in five innings. ?I thought Glover threw the ball really well,? Kremblas said. ?He had thrown 102 pitches. The first inning hurt him a little with all the extra pitches." The Sounds play Albuquerque again today at noon. Right-hander Ben Hendrickson (2-5, 4.30 earned run average) will start for Nashville against right-hander Frank Castillo (6-2, 3.93 ERA).

Atkinson Charleston Gazette Staff Writer Greg Kloosterman?s plan is starting to come together. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound left-hander turned in another quality start, but the West Virginia Power couldn?t muster any offense in falling 1-0 to the Lakewood (N.J.) BlueClaws Tuesday night. A crowd of 2,746 attended the South Atlantic League game at Appalachian Power. The Power?s season-high four-game winning streak came to an end on a night that included a 1-hour, 25-minute rain delay. Despite taking the loss, Kloosterman (3-9) is beginning to show the consistency that made him a ninth-round draft pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in 2003. The Bristol, Ind., resident allowed four hits, struck out three and walked three in 5 2/3 innings. The only run of the game came around on a walk, stolen base and throwing error and a wild pitch. Kloosterman retired the first seven batters before his mistakes in the third inning. ?During the first half, I was kind of on and off,?? said Kloosterman. ?During the second half, [Power pitching coach John] Curtis and I talked about trying to get a little bit more consistent, eliminate the big inning and try to put something together. I really do feel like I?m coming around. Pitch aggressively instead of trying to knit-pick. Let my defense work.?? In his past two starts, which have both been losses, Kloosterman has surrendered just three earned runs in 12 innings with 11 punchouts and four walks. ?He has a better idea of what he?s doing,?? added Curtis, who spent 15 years in the Major Leagues as a pitcher. ?I think he?s a much more confident pitcher out there, and that always helps. We?re just trying to even things out and trying to get him to do the same stuff out there each time. Even though the record doesn?t show he?s winning, he?s still winning the battle out there.?? Lakewood left-hander James Happ (4-2), a third-round pick by the Phillies last year, was even more efficient in disposing of the Power (24-42). He gave up just a pair of singles in seven shutout innings with seven strikeouts and no walks. The Power had a couple of chances in the latter innings but couldn?t come through. Grant Richardson led off the seventh with a walk, but was stranded after the next two batters couldn?t lay down bunts to move him into scoring position. In the eighth, Alcides Escobar singled with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch before being stranded. Escobar, Carlos Corporan and Freddy Parejo each singled for the Power. Reliever Derek DeCarlo was also effective with 3 1/3 scoreless innings. For Lakewood (22-44), Jesus Merchan went 2-for-4 and Timi Moni also pounded out a pair of hits. Power points The Power is off today before embarking on a rough eight-game road trip. West Virginia will face second-place Hagerstown (Md.) beginning Thursday then take on Northern Division-leading Lexington (Ky.). ...Catcher Corporan picked off a runner at first in the second and Kloosterman did the same in the sixth. Corporan also threw out a runner attempting to steal second in the seventh. Lakewood?s Jesus Merchan (left) denies a steal attempt by the Power?s Will Lewis. 3. Link while active, text follows: www.dailymail.com/news/Sp...005061515/ Weather doesn't cool down pitching Michael Dailey Charleston Daily Mail sportswriter The wicked line of pregame thunderstorms that rolled through the Kanawha Valley early Tuesday evening delayed the start of the West Virginia Power's final meeting of the season's first half against the Lakewood BlueClaws. But the 2,746 fans who weathered the 1 hour, 25-minute rain delay, were treated with cooler temperatures and a good old fashioned pitcher's duel. West Virginia starter Greg Kloosterman battled pitch for pitch with Lakewood's James Happ for nearly six innings, but was the tough luck loser in a 1-0 loss to the BlueClaws at Appalachian Power Park. West Virginia dropped to 24-42 in the South Atlantic League's first half, while Lakewood improved to 22-44 overall and 2-6 against the Power. Kloosterman, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound left-hander, pitched well enough to win, but a rocky third inning was all Happ and the BlueClaws needed to salvage the final game of a five-game series. Kloosterman (3-9) tossed 5 2/3 innings, allowing just four hits and one earned run, but Lakewood turned a walk, stolen base, error and a wild pitch into the game's only run. Lakewood's Timi Moni drew a one-out walk in the third, stole second and reached third when catcher Carlos Corporan's throw sailed into center. A wild pitch later in the inning brought Moni home with the winning run. "It came down to the first mistake and I made it," said Kloosterman. "I threw a curveball in the dirt and it bounced over my catcher. Just a little mistake like that can cost you a ballgame. That's what happened today." Derek DeCarlo pitched well in relief for West Virginia, allowing just one base runner over the final 3 1/3 innings. Happ (4-2), a 6-foot-6, 205-pound southpaw, was even more impressive in going seven shutout innings, while allowing just two hits, two walks and collecting seven strikeouts. Relievers Joseph Bisenius and Jacob Barrack tossed the final two innings for the BlueClaws. It was Happ's second consecutive impressive start, after the lefty went five scoreless innings in his last outing against the Delmarva Shorebirds. Happ, who missed the first four weeks of the season with a bulged disc in his back, has tossed 12 consecutive scoreless innings in lowing his earned run average to a sterling 1.65. "I'm just trying to stay down in the zone," said Happ, a 2004 fourth-round draft pick out of Northwestern University. "I let a couple get up, but I was lucky enough to get away with them tonight. "I struggled in a few innings, but I was able to work out of a couple of jams." Those jams came in the second and seventh innings as Happ allowed the leadoff hitter to reach base, before slamming the door on Power hitters. "It was a terrific pitchers duel," said Power pitching coach John Curtis. "Of course, we're disappointed in the way we lost, because there are execution problems. They're not something the other team did to you; they're something we did to ourselves. "But it was a good 1-0 game and we were in it until the end. That's all you can ask." The Power will have today off, before finishing up the first half with a four-game road series against second-place Hagerstown beginning Thursday night. Hagerstown is a game behind Lexington in the league's North standings. Right-handed pitcher Josh Wahpepah (3-3, 3.53) will get the start for the Power. Appalachian Power Park workers prepare to remove the tarp following a 1 hour, 25-minute rain delay Tuesday. The Power lost to the Lakewood BlueClaws, 1-0. Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/stars/huntsvil...amp;coll=1 Stars' offense sputters in loss to West Tenn Theriot's 8th-inning homer helps West Tenn to 2-1 victory By MATTHEW NASCONE Times Staff Writer eintern@htimes.com It took eight innings, but there was an extra-base hit in the Huntsville Stars game Tuesday night. Unfortunately for the Stars, the extra-base hit wasn't theirs as the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx claimed a 2-1 victory at Joe Davis Stadium. Diamond Jaxx shortstop Ryan Theriot cranked a solo home run over the left-field wall in the top of the eighth inning. Through seven innings, all 10 hits in the game were singles. Theriot's home run off Stars reliever Brett Evert gave West Tenn a 2-0 lead. "He made a good pitch, but it tailed over the plate and I just pulled my hands in and hit it," Theriot said. "In a close game things like that are going to happen." The Stars did avoid a shutout with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Vinny Rottino reached base with a two-out single and Nelson Cruz knocked him in with a double on the next pitch. The ninth inning provided a slight spark for the Stars, but Tony Zuniga struck out with the tying run on third base. Ryan Costello and Renyel Pinto were locked in a duel through six innings. The only run scored on either starter was in the top half of the first when Theriot scored for the Diamondjaxx on a throwing error by Rottino. Before Theriot's home run, the biggest threat to either starting pitcher was in the Stars' half of the sixth inning. Cruz walked with one out. Ben Van Iderstine followed Cruz with a single to right field. However, Brandon Gemoll grounded into a double play to the third baseman to end the inning. West Tenn threatened in the seventh inning. With two outs, Casey Kopitzke poked a single through the left side. Buck Coats pinch hit for the pitcher and knocked another single into right field. There was no run. Costello turned in eight strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings with two walks and five hits allowed. Pinto struck out six Stars through six innings, while walking two and allowing five hits. Pinto (3-0) grabbed the win for the Diamond Jaxx and Costello (0-3) took the loss. Talley Haines struck out three batters to record his 13th save of the season for West Tenn. The Diamond Jaxx had a one-game lead in the Southern League North Division going into the game and Theriot realized how big this win was for West Tenn. "This game was huge," he said. "Now is the time where it is kill or be killed and it was unfortunate we had to go up against (the Stars) because they play us hard every time. "Hopefully we can scratch another one tomorrow and separate ourselves a little bit more." The final game of the series is today at 12:05 p.m. at Joe Davis Stadium.

  8. Nashville Site Game Summary: Sounds Post All-Around Effort In 11-3 WinNASHVILLE ? The Nashville Sounds rapped out a season-high 17 hits in hanging an 11-3 loss on the visiting Albuquerque Isotopes on Tuesday evening in front of a sellout crowd at Greer Stadium. With the win, Nashville (34-32) pulled within a half-game of first-place Memphis in the PCL American Conference Northern Division. Every Sounds starter recorded a hit in the contest, including five multiple-hit efforts, and all but Trent Durrington drove in at least one run. The Nashville pitching staff, anchored by starter Gary Glover's dominant first outing in a Sounds uniform, combined to post 12 strikeouts and limited the Albuquerque offense to five hits on the evening. The Isotopes scored a pair of unearned runs stemming from three Nashville errors in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Matt Padgett drove in one of the runs in the frame with an RBI single. Kevin Orie, who led Nashville batters with a 3-for-5, three-RBI evening, put the Sounds on the board in the bottom of the second when he belted his 12th home run of the year, a leadoff solo shot to center off Albuquerque starter Les Walrond. Nashville matched its largest inning of the season when it plated seven in the fourth against Walrond to take a 7-2 lead. The Sounds sent 10 batters to the dish and produced seven hits, five of them infield singles. Brad Nelson tied the contest when he drove in Corey Hart with a single to second. Steve Scarborough, Glover, and Dave Krynzel each added an RBI in the frame before Hart ripped his team-leading 16th double of the year to up the Sounds? advantage to 7-2. Audio Link of Gary Glover Bases-Loaded RBI Bunt: www.nashvillesounds.com/a...206-14.mp3 Isotopes leadoff hitter Mark Little smacked his 16th home run of the season to bring Albuquerque within 7-3 in the top of the eighth. The blast was a two-out solo shot off Nashville reliever Kane Davis. The Sounds got the run back in the bottom of the inning when Nelson scored on a Scarborough sacrifice fly. Orie struck again for Nashville in the bottom of the eighth, delivering a bases-loaded two-run single to up the lead to 10-3. Julio Mosquera added a two-out RBI double later in the frame to plate the final run of the night. Glover (1-0) earned his first Nashville victory in his initial Triple-A outing of the season. The right-hander allowed two unearned runs and fanned eight batters over his five innings of work. Walrond (3-5) took his second loss in two starts against the Sounds this season after being tagged for seven runs on nine hits in only 3 2/3 frames. The teams continue the series with a noon matinee on Wednesday afternoon at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Ben Hendrickson (2-5, 4.30) takes the hill for the Sounds to face Albuquerque right-hander Frank Castillo (6-2, 3.93), who pitched for Nashville in 1999.
  9. Brevard County Site Game Summary: Manatees management getting the hang of it -- now if they could only list the following game's starting pitcher... ANDERSON THREE-RUN DOUBLE GUIDES MANATEES VIERA, FL ? Drew Anderson?s three-run double in the bottom of the eighth broke open a 1-1 tie to give the Manatees the 4-1 win Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium in front of 3,523 fans celebrating the US Army?s 230th birthday. The Manatees were getting one hit going into the eighth and although they had scored a run in the second inning they where struggling against Cardinals starter Eric Haberer. Haberer was 3-0 with a win in each of his three starts since being called up from the Swing of the Quad Cities on May 27th. The ?Tees put their early run up against Haberer on a walk, and error and two consecutive fielder?s choice plays to score Adam Heether who had worked the walk. It wasn?t until the bottom of the eighth that the Manatees were able to get anything going against Haberer. Two straight singles by Wandel Campana and Ozzie Chavez to lead off the eighth would chase Haberer and give the ?Tees two men on with no outs. After Robby Deevers struck out Travis Ezi would get the third single of the inning and load the bases with just one out. Ezi was followed by Steve Sollmann who was called out on strikes to keep the bases loaded with two outs. On a 3-2 count Anderson would swat a deep fly to left center field that dropped between the center fielder and the left fielder and give Anderson the stand-up three-run double and put BC up 4-1. Jeremy Lewis was brought in to save the game for Brevard and after he loaded the bases on two walks and a single would get the final two outs on called third strikes. Lewis picks up his third save of the year and bullpen mate Brian Wolfe would pitch a 1-2-3 eighth inning with three strikeouts to notch his first win of the year. The Manatees play game two of the three game set tomorrow at Space Coast Stadium starting at 7:00 (6:00 Central). (And oh yeah, starter Carlos Villanueva was real good...http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif -- Mass Haas)
  10. Huntsville Site Game Summary: Renyel Pinto spun six shutout innings and Ryan Theriot homered in West Tenn?s 2-1 win over Huntsville Tuesday night in the second game of a three-game series at Joe Davis Stadium. The Diamond Jaxx improved to 42-21 and extended their lead to two games over Carolina in the North Division after the Mudcats were defeated 11-4 by Jacksonville, while the Stars slumped to 26-39. West Tenn has won all five games between the two teams, with four of the five games decided by either one or two runs. Theriot drew a one-out walk in the first inning, moved to third base on a hit-and-run single by Matt Murton and scored on a ground ball by Brandon Sing that was fielded by shortstop Enrique Cruz, who made a throw that pulled first baseman Brandon Gemoll off the bag and allowed Sing to reach safely. Stars starter Ryan Costello worked out of further trouble by striking out Casey McGehee and retiring Matt Craig on a ground ball. Costello did not allow another runner past first base until Casey Kopitzke and pinch-hitter Buck Coats stroked two-out, back-to-back singles in the seventh that spelled the end of his night. Brett Evert took over and struck out Felix Pie to end the inning. Costello was charged with one unearned run on five hits and struck out eight but suffered the loss to fall to 0-3. Theriot led off the eighth against Evert and drilled a line drive long ball just over the wall, just inside the foul pole down the left field line to push the visitors lead to 2-0. It was his first home run of the season and the second allowed by Evert since joining the Stars. Pinto scattered five singles and allowed only Kennard Bibbs in the first and Nelson Cruz in the sixth inning to reach second base. The West Tenn southpaw induced Gemoll to bounce into an inning-ending twin-killing in the sixth with runners at first and second base. Pinto improved to 3-0 after striking out six and walking two in his seventh start and first against the Stars. Randy Wells took over and retired the first five hitters he faced before Vinny Rottino singled and scored on a Nelson Cruz double to trim the lead to 2-1. Andy Shipman was brought on to face pinch-hitter Tony Gwynn, Jr., who flied out for the final out of the inning. Talley Haines struck out the first two hitters in the ninth before Guilder Rodriguez reached second base on a dropped fly ball by Pie and took third on a wild pitch. Haines then fanned Tony Zuniga to end the game and notch his second save in as many nights and 13th of the season. The series concludes Wednesday afternoon with left-hander Dana Eveland pitching for the Stars against West Tenn right-hander Jae-Kuk Ryu. Coverage of the game gets underway at 11:50 a.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.
  11. West Virginia Site Game Summary: BLUECLAWS AVOID POWER SWEEPCharleston, WV ? The West Virginia Power went into Tuesday night?s game hoping for their first sweep of the season, but the Lakewood BlueClaws spoiled the fun with a 1-0 victory at Appalachian Power Park. The start of the game was pushed back an hour and a half due to rain. The only run of the game crossed the plate in the top of the third inning. Timi Moni reached on a walk, stole second base, made his way to third base on an errant throw from catcher Carlos Corporan and then scored on a wild pitch. Greg Kloosterman threw a great game but J.A. Happ threw seven scoreless innings to get the win, marking the second outing in a row that Kloosterman has been matched up with a fellow left handed pitcher who threw more than six scoreless innings. Happ (4-2) earned the victory, Jacob Barrack (3) earned the save and Kloosterman (3-9) despite only allowing a run through five and two thirds, obtained the loss. The Power fall to 24-42 with the loss and the BlueClaws improve to 22-44 with the win. The Power are off on Wednesday, but they will finish up the first half with a four game series against the Hagerstown Suns in Hagerstown on Thursday night. RHP Josh Wahpepah (3-3, 3.53) will throw for the Power and Hagerstown?s starter has not been announced. The first pitch will be delivered at 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

  20. Still a week away from the start of the season, so this roster is subject to change, but the following pitchers have been assigned to Helena: The familiar faces: 22-year-old RHP Simon Beresford last pitched in Helena in 2003, having pitched in Beloit in 2004 and West Virginia to open 2005 20-year-old RHP Ryan Marion (8th round, 2003), struggled with his control in 2004 (33 walks in 35.1 IP at Helena) The intriguing surprise: 24-year-old RHP Eric Thomas (3rd round, 2002) hasn't pitched since his 30 innings in rookie ball back in 2002, when the Brewers' rookie league team was in Ogden. He's 6'9" -- can't wait until he joins the Brevard County giants... Kids up from Arizona -- let's see what you've got: 22-year-old RHP Luis Bernal (33rd round, 2004) 21-year-old RHP Richard Breshears, an undrafted free agent signee last June 21-year-old RHP Wilfredo Laureano -- the Domincan product's fifth year in the system, second season state-side 20-year-old LHP Rafael Lluberes -- entering his fourth year in the system, he was the Crew's most impressive Arizona pitcher in 2004 19-year-old RHP Ronny Malave -- third year in the system for the Venezuelan 20-year-old RHP Tyler Morrison (10th round, 2003) -- improved most of his numbers during his second Arizona season Welcome to professional baseball: 23-year-old LHP Steve Hammond (6th round, 2005) -- the Long Beach State southpaw might see West Virginia before too long 22-year-old RHP Christopher Jean (38th round, 2005) -- Texas State product 20-year-old RHP Josh Louis (42nd round, 2004) -- draft-and-follow Texas JUCO pitcher 23-year-old LHP Derek Miller (47th round, 2004) -- University of Vermont grad, another draft-and-follow, could move up quickly, like Hammond 23-year-old RHP Dane Renkert (29th round, 2005) -- older late-round pick out of Washington State needs to impress early on 22-year-old RHP Patrick Ryan (19th round, 2005) 22-year-old LHP David Welch (20th round, 2005) -- Texas JUCO kid via Sydney, Australia, perhaps he and Simon Beresford crossed paths across the globe Among those not listed are, and any comments here are speculative -- RHP Tom Wilhelmsen (not a go yet, apparently), LHP Carlos Ramirez (still hurt?), RHP Alvaro Martinez, the 6'7" Venezuelan who started 13 games in Helena last summer, or either of the highly-thought of Canadian RHP's from the 2004 draft, Craig Langille or just-turned 18-year-old Alexandre Periard. For that matter, big-name Dominican signee Roque Mercedes, also 18, will open in Arizona. The Arizona pitching staff has a chance to be special for a change this year, it seems. About a week from today, on the eve of the start of that season, we should get confirmation of a final roster there. If the older college pitchers perform as they should for Helena, that staff seems pretty solid, although it lacks for star power -- some of the younger Arizona hurlers are more heralded and intriguing. Position players later tonight...
  21. www.starsboxscore.com/ Stars get bullpen help... Meyers addedPrince Fielder and Rickie Weeks were reunited Monday in Tampa Bay in Brewer uniforms....... While Rickie had a two-hit night to raise his average to .308, Prince DH'ed and went 0-for-4 in his major league debut against Tampa Bay pitchers Doug Waechter and Danys Baez....... Fielder said he was "anxious" in his first major league at-bat, but got more comfortable in subsequent trips. He grounded out twice, popped out, and flied out in the 9th and left one runner on..... Prince was hitting .253 with 15 HRs and 47 RBIs for the Sounds in 64 games prior to his promotion Monday........ The Nashville Sounds purchased outfielder Warren Morris, a familiar face in town when the Sounds were a Pirates' farm club. Pitchers Blaine Boyer and Jorge Vazquez, who pitched for the Mississippi Braves only a little more than a week ago, made their major league debuts tonight against the Texas Rangers as the Braves came to Arlington and speaking of Texas, John Wasdin, who was 12-3 for the Stars in 1994, had his contract from Class AAA-Oklahoma (PCL) purchased by the Rangers........ Wasdin has been up in the majors already with the A's, Red Sox, Rockies, Orioles, Blue Jays, and Rangers last year. The Stars needed a crowd of 3,274 tonight (Monday) to match last year's pace in attendance, and fell far short, as expected. After all, it's been a long time since the park decently filled up on weekdays, even in summer.......The Stars are 9th in the league in average attendance (2,903) and you get one guess who's last (visiting West Tenn) ........ The Stars were looking for their 4th straight win for the first time in well more than a month, but the Diamond Jaxx, in an exciting race for a playoff spot, were just a little more determined. They got what they came for, and with Carolina's 7-1 loss to Jacksonville, Carmen Pignatiello helped vault the D'Jaxx to the top of the Northern Division by a game, with two more left in the 1st half. Playing like they were late to an appointment, Diamond Jaxx hitters swung at Glenn Woolard's first pitch five times in the first go-around in the order........ After just the first three pitches in the game, the D'Jaxx had a single, a sacrifice, two out and a runner on third! I've seen it take 17-18 pitches to get that far........ Leadoff hitter Felix Pie, the Cubs' # 2 prospect, scored on Woolard's 13th pitch, a wild pitch outside to shortstop Buck Coats....... Jeff Winchester scrambled for the ball, which came to a rest on the first base side of the dirt circle that surrounds home plate, but he slipped trying to pick it up, otherwise he may have had a chance to get the ball in time to Woolard who was covering the plate. If the hitters for WT had aspirations of ending this game quickly, they couldn't match Pignatiello, who's a quick worker anyway....... After three no-hit innings, he threw just 26 pitches, 17 for strikes...... Last May 23 against Mobile, Pignatiello was one out away from a no-hitter before Ronnie Merrill found the space between first and second to break up his no-hit bid at Pringles Park. ........With two out in the 4th, Nelson Cruz finally broke the ice with a single to right field on Pignatiello's first pitch, but Tony Zuniga, who's been hot at the plate lately, earning him the cleanup spot for the Stars, grounded out to end the 4th....... Zuniga came in 7-for-15 in his last four games. Pignatiello was in total command, giving up just that lone hit in five innings, while his teammates built an early 4-0 lead....... Casey McGehee rocked a two-run homer over the first fence in left-center field on a 1-2 pitch from Woolard in the 3rd inning and Richard Lewis, last year's Southern League MVP, drove one about 405 feet to the alley in right center for their second homer, to leadoff the 4th. Despite a 4-0 deficit, the Stars had their chances....... They came on late, gathering nine of their 10 hits in the last four innings. In the 6th, they loaded the bases with two out on a bunt single by Tony Gwynn, a hard ground single to left by Vinny Rottino, batting in the # 2 hole for the first time this season, and a hit batter. Nelson Cruz got a piece of a 1-2 pitch off his elbow......... But Zuniga hit into a force play to end the inning. In the 7th, the Stars loaded the bases again....... After a leadoff double off the wall in right field by Ben Van Iderstine, Enrique Cruz drew a one-out walk and Guilder Rodriguez, now hitting .290, hit a slow grounder to the left side for a hit........... The bases again were loaded with one out...... John Vanden Berg singled on a 2-0 pitch to shallow left to drive in Van Iderstine, but Cruz, trying to score on Gwynn's fly ball to left, was nailed at the plate to end that inning. The Stars left Rottino on second after he led off with a double and in the 9th, with runners on the corners, Gwynn singled to center to score Cruz to make it 4-2........ Rottino was up with runners on the corners -- potentially the tying run in the game, but on a 2-2 pitch he checked his swing and paid the consequences. He was rung up by home plate ump Scott Childers (brother of former Star and current Brave, Matt Childers). Gwynn, Jr. and Rodriguez collided on a short pop up beyond the infield grass by leadoff hitter Buck Coats in the 8th....... Legs and arms tangled like a crash of two bi-planes. Rodriguez who was racing back into Gwynn's territory, a little too deep in the outfield for him to be in, didn't call him off and play was stopped for about four minutes....... Gwynn seemed to had gotten the worst of it and was down on his back with his knees up. Nelson Cruz picked up the ball from right and threw it in holding Coats to a double, but neither player was seriously hurt. At least that's the way it looked, although there was considerable pain on Gwynn's face as he was helped up. Mike Meyers, a former Diamond Jaxx pitcher in 1999-2000, joined the Stars today after being sent down from Nashville....... Meyers was 3-3 with a 6.17 ERA in 22 relief appearances for the Sounds....... He threw the final two innings for the Stars, 26 pitches in all, and got the ball on the ground........ It saved him in the 8th as he got brilliant defensive play from Enrique Cruz for the first of two force outs and a ground out. He gave up one infield single in the 9th, but held D'Jaxx hitters to the infield, even thought they nearly scored when pinch-hitter Dwayne Bacon hit a pinch-single to third, stole 2nd, and was bunted over to third........ When Adam Greenberg hit a slow grounder to Rodriguez, Bacon was caught in a rundown going from Rodriguez to catcher Winchester, to Zuniga, and finally to Meyers for the out......... Meyers is in his 9th year of professional baseball after spending the 2004 season with St. Lucie, Norfolk and Binghamton in the Mets organization, going 4-5 with a 6.36 ERA in 51 games, including 11 starts, at all three levels....... Meyers was originally selected by the Cubs in the 26th round of the 1997 draft. He was released by Chicago in May of 2002 and re-signed with the organization one month later....... Meyers signed with the Mets as a free agent in January, 2004 and signed as a free agent by Milwaukee in February of 2005........ Meyers compiled a 9-2 record in 14 starts with the Diamond Jaxx in 1999-2000........ That brings the Stars roster to the 23-man limit.. Ryan Costello makes Tuesday's start against last year's ERA leader in the SL, Renyel Pinto (2-0, 1.96). Pinto came down from Iowa on May 9....... Pignatiello is one of four pitchers among the top 12 ERA leaders in the league, and with a 3.06 ERA, is now 4th. The Brewers signed four of their draft selections, including their # 2 pick (*third round), right-hander Will Inman. Third baseman Michael Bell, outfielder Brendan Katin, and right-hander Christopher Jean were the others. The latter three will be assigned to Rookie League-Helena, which starts their Pioneer League season soon....... Inman may be assigned to the Arizona Rookie League, although that is not certian...... The Brewers have now signed 15 of their 49 selections and five of their top 10 picks.

Serfass, an undrafted free agent signed after the 2004 draft, was a nice story in that he was out of West Virginia University, so there was some interest locally during his brief stay with the Power. But undrafted free agents need to make quick and powerful impressions (no pun intended), and Serfass' numbers didn't reflect that. 25. Nashville Site -- No Surprise Here: MOSQUERA REJOINS SOUNDS; CORREDOR ?POWERED? DOWN: Catcher Julio Mosquera has been re-added to the Nashville roster after being outrighted by the Milwaukee Brewers yesterday when the club added Sounds first baseman Prince Fielder. The backstop spent eight days with the Brewers as a safeguard while catcher Damian Miller recovered from a right groin strain. Mosquera was retired in his lone at-bat. To make room for Mosquera, fellow backstop Nestor Corredor was re-assigned to the Single-A West Virginia Power. The 21-year-old spent a week on the Sounds roster but failed to make his career Triple-A debut.
