Brewer position players have had a really, really weird season. Look at the OPS of our players - they are essentially doing bad or really good. There's no in-between. Villar: .566 Santana: .599 Arcia: .531 Aguilar: .609 Broxton: .582 Franklin: .409 Kirk N.: .473 Thames: 1.411 Braun: .970 Shaw: .888 Pina: 1.096 Bandy: 1.024 Perez: .953 I don't know what it means. I just was looking at numbers and realized no one was 'average'. Everyone was on the extreme. Obviously, it's very early. Things will adjust to the mean over time. But I thought it was interesting.

The 2017 MLB Draft Thread (#9 Pick + #34 & #46)
Matt Breen replied to ZBTMP's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
Perhaps that's the issue some have with the Brewers philosophy. Too safe. And I say this without knowing what Groomes issues were. Perhaps they were that bad. But obviously at least one club felt that the reward was worth the risk and he's been pretty good so far, minus one start this year. Groome was the guy I wanted badly last year and was very very upset that they passed on him. But the Brewers played it safe with Ray. Hopefully he figures things out. A lot of teams passed on Groome. He was probably the most talented player in the draft. That all the teams did pass on him is pretty telling. Unfortunately, some teams can take more risks. Boston can buy their way out of a problem. I'm not sure going after one of the players they consider to have all-star potential as playing it safe. I think that's just smart. But like you said, he's our guy, and let's just hope he produces at a high level. -

300 ABs is really, really early to bestow a 'bust' (or 'success') label on any guy. Ray was placed aggressively at A+ ball last year. His first month, he had a .528 OPS. His second month, it was .819. That was pretty encouraging to see the improvement. Groome had off-the-field issues that concerned the Brewers - and a lot of other clubs. There was no way they were risking taking him. The Brewers loved Rutherford - and if Ray hadn't fallen, there are indications he was the club's pick. I can't say anything about Manning or Garrett, but Lewis had some sub-par workouts. There was concern he had feasted on lower level pitching, and his game might not translate to better pitchers. They did not want another Victor Roache. James Kaprielian has all of 56 inning pitched and Tommy John surgery. Everyone knew Walker Buehler was immensely talented - his name was thrown around as a top 5 guy. But then it was known he was going to require TJ surgery. It was a risky pick by the Dodgers, yet kudos for them for taking the risk. I've advocated going after the guy for a year - before he came back. Dodgers however, love him. Ultimately, we can throw out a dozen names and say the Brewers 'missed' on them because they didn't draft the guy. That's easy with hindsight. In Ray, the Brewers saw an elite athlete with outstanding makeup who would grow into an all-star caliber player. Coming into the draft, the Brewers had three guys as potential future all-stars - Groome, Perez and Ray. As noted, Groome was off the board. as was Perez due the PED thing. That left Ray. Perhaps a bunch of pitchers eventually pass up Ray in the prospect rankings. Young players are extraordinarily unpredictable, so if that happened - it wouldn't shock me. And I'm not defending Ray over guys like Manning - but I think to pass judgement on Ray this early is pretty shortsighted. I'll give it a few years - then we can see what happens. -
Sky Sox Withstand Nashville, 8-3 Woodruff's start and four-run eighth propel Sox past Sounds for second straight win By Robby Veronesi / Colorado Springs Sky Sox Brandon Woodruff threw six scoreless innings Monday night and lowered his ERA to 1.61 in the process. (Photo: Paat Kelly) Colorado Springs Box Score Brewer fans are hoping they saw a little of the future on Monday when Brandon Woodruff took the mound against Nashville. The big right-hander proceeded to throw six innings of three hit, one walk, no run ball to lead the Sky Sox to an 8-3 victory. Woodruff struck out five while getting the victory. His ERA dropped to 1.61 - impressive considering three of his four starts have come in the thin Colorado air. Despite Woodruff’s stellar game, the Sky Sox bullpen was a mixed bag of results. Wei-Chung Wang (0.2 IP, 3 hits, 1 BB, 2 ER) and Tyler Cravy (0.2 IP, 3 hits, 1 BB, 1 ER) were ineffective, but Andy Oliver and David Goforth combined to shut down a Nashville rally in the 8th. Rob Scahill added a scoreless 9th The Sky Sox hitters were effective, producing nine hits and three walks. Brett Phillips (2-3, BB, HR), Lewis Brinson (2-3, BB, SB, CS), Ivan De Jesus Jr. (2-4, 2B), and Kyle Wren (2-3, 3B) were the top bats for the night. The Nashville Sounds had their chances on Monday night, but they left nine runners on base as they went 1-7 with runners in scoring position. At 12-5, the Sky Sox have the best record in the PCL. Colorado Springs Game Log The Sky Sox up 4-2 in the 8th, the Sounds were threatening to strike with a big inning when they first two batters got on base. However, Andy Oliver induced a double play, and then David Goforth struck out Matt Chapman to end the threat. Nashville Top of the 8th Mark Canha homers (1) on a fly ball to left field. Chris Parmelee walks. Renato Nunez singles on a line drive to center fielder Lewis Brinson. Chris Parmelee to 2nd. Pitching Change: Andy Oliver replaces Tyler Cravy. Brewers sign Eric Thames (3 years)
Matt Breen replied to jerichoholicninja's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I instictively want to say 'Tames' - like the river. This is likely because I'm a history/geography nerd, and also it makes no sense to pronounce 'Thames' as 'Tames' - so every time I would see it a mental flag pops up reminding me to pronounce it as 'Tames'. -

Hey, the Reds have Bronson Arroyo. 40 years old, TJ surgery and a two-year absence. What could go wrong. -

I was looking at info on Pavin Smith just last night - and was wondering about him as a possible Brewer selection. In this day and age of lots of strikeout hitters (as you noted with Kendall), Smith has six strikeouts on 168 at bats. That's pretty amazing. Hits for average, takes a lot of walks, excellent fielder. Good, but not great, power. The comp I see on him is John Olerud. He also looks like a player that could advance quickly to the majors (which isn't critical, but nice). The play of Thames might make the team hesitant to draft a 1B. Although scouts seem to feel he would have no problem playing outfield. I know a lot of people want pitching, but Smith seems more like he could be a pretty special hitter. And hitter's generally are less risky than pitchers. -
Sky Sox Survive Sounds Rally, 6-5 Espino, Cordell Power Sox to 8th win in last 10 games. By Robby Veronesi / Colorado Springs Sky Sox Paolo Espino's strong start propelled the Sky Sox to its eighth win in the past 10 games Sunday afternoon. (Photo: Paat Kelly) Colorado Springs Box Score The Sky Sox almost blew it on Sunday. Leading 6-0 going into the 9th, Stephen Kohlscheen and Tristan Archer coughed up five runs before Rob Scahill came on for the game’s final out - and a 6-5 victory. Amazingly, all five the Sounds runs came with two outs. Paolo Espino and Ryan Cordell were the game’s stars. Espino threw 6.2 innings of no run ball, giving up only four hits and a walk, while striking out five. Cordell went 4-4 with a double, HR and an RBI. Garrett Cooper (1-4) added a three run homer. Cordell’s big game upped his batting average to .305. As noted earlier in this thread, Colorado Springs has the PCL’s best ERA at 3.11. The Sky Sox also have the best OPS in the league. Colorado Springs Game Log The Sky Sox broke open the game in the 6th, highlighted by Cooper’s three run blast. Col. Springs Bottom of the 6th Tyler Heineman doubles (4) on a ground ball to left fielder Matt McBride. Kyle Wren flies out to right fielder Mark Canha. Tyler Heineman to 3rd. Lewis Brinson out on a sacrifice fly to right fielder Mark Canha. Tyler Heineman scores. Eric Sogard walks. Ryan Cordell singles on a ground ball to third baseman Renato Nunez. Eric Sogard to 2nd. Garrett Cooper homers (2) on a fly ball to center field. Eric Sogard scores. Ryan Cordell scores. Brett Phillips grounds out, second baseman Joey Wendle to first baseman Chris Parmelee. But the team almost gave it away in the 9th. With two outs, the sequence went like this: hit, walk, hit, hit, wild pitch, hit, hit - then finally a line out. Nashville Top of the 9th Melvin Mercedes called out on strikes. Mark Canha pops out to first baseman Garrett Cooper in foul territory. Chris Parmelee doubles (2) on a fly ball to right fielder Ryan Cordell. Renato Nunez walks. Bruce Maxwell doubles (6) on a fly ball to left fielder Kyle Wren. Chris Parmelee scores. Renato Nunez scores. Pitching Change: Tristan Archer replaces Stephen Kohlscheen. Ryan Lavarnway singles on a ground ball to center fielder Lewis Brinson. Bruce Maxwell scores. With Kenny Wilson batting, wild pitch by Tristan Archer, Ryan Lavarnway to 2nd. Kenny Wilson singles on a ground ball to shortstop Eric Sogard. Ryan Lavarnway to 3rd. My son is 17 and likes Rebels (although he has only seen the first two seasons). He said it's definitely worth watching if you are a Star Wars fan. It's not as intense as Clone Wars, which gets pretty dark in the later seasons. He said it's more of a sit back and just enjoy show. As you noted, a little more kid friendly - but still very fun.

Sounds Steal Saturday Matinee, 5-2 Nashville scores four runs in final two innings to earn comeback win. By Colorado Springs Sky Sox Hiram Burgos retired 14 of the 17 batters he faced during five innings Saturday evening against the Nashville Sounds. (Photo: Paat Kelly) Colorado Springs Box Score The Sky Sox bullpen failed on Saturday, giving up four runs in the final two innings in a 5-2 lose to Nashville. The Sky Sox lost despite a fine effort from Hiram Burgos (5 IP, 3 Hits, 1 ER, 0BB, 3K). The club’s relievers would fail Burgos. Andrew Barbosa would give up a run in two innings of work. But he real damage came 8th inning, when David Goforth would surrender four hits and a run, and then in 9th, when Andy Oliver would give up two hits and two walks. Offensively, the Sky Sox managed just seven hits. Garrett Cooper (2-4, 2B), Brett Phillips (1-3, BB, HR) and Andrew Susac (2-3) lead the way. Phillips HR was the his fourth of the season, which leads the team. Colorado Springs Game Log The Sky Sox lost it in the 8th. Goforth surrendered four singles and threw a wild pitch. The numbers change each year, so there is no specific date. However, past seasons indicate that players who are kept in the minors 60 or so days or more do NOT get Super 2 status. The baseball season is 183 days. So as you look at these, you can see that the cutoff dates have ranged from 37 days of service (in 2011) to 61 (in two different years). Below is the year, followed by the service time needed to qualify for Super 2 in that year, plus the days needed to be kept in minors to avoid Super 2 (assuming the player has no other service time). Note: the baseball season is 183 days. 2016: 2.131 (52 days) 2015: 2.130 (53 days) 2014: 2.133 (50 days) 2013: 2.122 (61 days) 2012: 2.140 (43 days) 2011: 2.146 (37 days) 2010: 2.122 (61 days) 2009: 2.139 (44 days) Guys could have been called up as early as mid-May (2011) and not gotten Super 2 status. But the last few years the cutoff has roughly been the end of May. A team would be wise to wait until early/mid-June if they want to be safe. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/10/projected-super-two-cutoff-2016.html

Sky Sox Split Series-Ending Doubleheader Colorado Springs and Memphis each record 5-1 wins on a chilly Friday night. By Colorado Springs Sky Sox Michael Blazek threw three scoreless innings in just his second start as a member of the Sky Sox in the second game of Friday's doubleheader. (Photo: Paat Kelly) Colorado Springs Game One Box Score Colorado Springs Game Two Box Score Lewis Brinson is showing no ill effects from the dislocated finger that kept him out of several games earlier this year. In a double header today, the 22-year old centerfielder had five hits on eight at bats (including an HR) helping the Sky Sox split with the Memphis Redbirds. Brinson is now hitting .410 for the season. Game One Highlights Not a lot for the Sky Sox. The club managed only six hits and a single run in a 5-1 lose. Brinson (2-4, 2B) and Yadiel Rivera (2-3) lead the offense. Sky Sox hitters couldn’t capitalize when they had the chance - going 0-5 with runners in scoring position. On the mound, top pitching prospect Josh Hader produced middling results, giving up three earned runs in six innings of work. He walked three and struck out four. Game Two Highlights Much better. The Sky Sox pounded out a dozen hits in a 5-1 victory. Ryan Cordell (3-3, 2B, 2 RBI), Lewis Brinson (3-4, HR, SB), Kyle Wren (4-2, 2 2B) and Yadiel Rivera (2-3, 2B) provided the punch. On the mound, the quartet of Michael Blazek (3 IP, 0 ER, 2BB, 3K), Tristan Archer (1.2 IP, 1 ER), Tyler Cravy (1.1 IP, O ER, 1 K) and Rob Scahill (1 IP, O ER, 1K) held the Redbirds to a single run. While Brinson has garnered much of the accolades of late for the Sky Sox, Rivera has done well, upping his batting average to .386 for the season. Brewers sign Eric Thames (3 years)
Matt Breen replied to jerichoholicninja's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Or maybe the Cardinal pitchers started taking PEDs. I mean, no one was stopping him before. Must be something going on there. Wink, wink. -
Kirk N. may very well end up back with the club. There is a good chance no one claims He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Spelled. If that's the case, the Brewers might just put him down at AAA to see if he can get back on track. Of course, as a veteran, he could reject the assignment. But then he'd be losing out on his paycheck. Doubt he wants that. Again, this all assumes that no one claims Kirk, and the Brewers would like to keep him. Brewers could even say to him that they just want him to go play everyday, get things back in order, and then they'll bring him back.

Weather is pretty crappy out in Colorado. Mid-40s, windy - possible rain. Wouldn't be surprised if we got cancelled again - but you never know the weather out here. It can change quickly.

Matt Breen replied to jerichoholicninja's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Dave Shoenfield from ESPN made this great comment in his column today regarding Thames - and the insinuations from Lackey and Bosio that he is on PEDs: "The Cubs win a ring and start whining like Red Sox fans." http://www.espn.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/78884/crazy-numbers-early-trends-and-the-meaning-of-what-weve-seen-so-far -
It all depends on the hitters. If guys who are hitting keep hitting (Thames, Braun, Pina, Bandy, Aguilar, Shaw, Santana), and guys that should be hitting better improve - or we replace them (Villar, Perez, Broxton, Arcia, Kirk N.) - then who knows. We have the 2nd highest OPS in the NL right now. And while Thames will regress, there's a lot of room for improvement. With luck, the pitching could be average. But the hitting could be above average. Get into the playoffs, get some guys hot -- who knows. Also, in the playoffs, a 5th starter might not be needed - eliminating a potential weakness. Note: I don't necessarily believe my scenario I just painted is super feasible. But I'm not discounting it.

I was 23. Remember it pretty well. I lived in Madison. I was taking my brother and his girlfriend back to Eau Claire where they went to school. My brother and I went crazy as we listened to the game. Woke up his girlfriend - who was sleeping in the back seat of the car and couldn't have cared less. I remember how I couldn't wait to get back to Madison and see the sports highlights. I mostly remember Deer's HR that tied the game.
