  1. It could also be different on how the wages are paid out. "Bonus" payments can be taxed at a higher rate. I get a payment for opting out of health insurance and it is always taxed higher than my regular wages.
  2. As a Spurs fan this is fantastic. Yedlin was the most dynamic player on the USMNT roster. He changed games when he entered. I think it is the best of both worlds for American soccer fans. Sounders get to keep Yedlin through the rest of the season, and Spurs can work him into their roster through a couple transfer periods. Last year sure was frustrating. Hopefully this is the year they turn it around.
  3. Diaper bags barely get checked. I always said this would be the way to smuggle booze into games.
  4. We went to NYC in the fall of 2011 and hit up the TKTS booth at the South Street Seaport. Waited in line for maybe 10 minutes. Way better than the Times Square booth. Within reasonable walking distance of Wall St/WTC if that is on your agenda. The Seaport is also interesting. I have been twice, and played total tourist both times. First time was as a teacher with a group of HS students. Second time was with my wife who was there for her first time. If you do the tourist stuff and have time to hit lots of stuff, the City Pass is not a bad deal. It looks like the price went up a little since I last went, so maybe check out the math to be sure.
  5. We went to a place just outside OKC called Pop's that had about 600 flavors of bottled soda, arranged by flavor. Real good food as well. http://www.route66.com
  6. Just took a trip to STL, but we did it with a 3 year old and a 6 year old. All the stuff we did probably wouldn't fit either demographic. We checked out the City Museum, which was pretty much awesome for kids our age. We also heard good things about the science museum and the zoo, neither of which we had time to check out. We did the obligatory arch tour, which was pretty anti-climactic. Kind of one of those things you feel you have to do.
  7. From what I heard, there were some students from Riverside that made their way to the game to cause problems. They were allegedly denied access to the game, but hung around to cause problems after the game. I thought the students were extremely well-behaved last night. I enjoyed the students chanting "We Can't Hear You" at each other when their team would go on a run. King's defense combined with Central's interesting ball-handling choices was the difference-maker. King found ways into passing lanes and trapped well. The freshman from Central has some serious potential. Very entertaining game. Hard to call it "good" with so many fouls and sloppy play, but it was definitely worth the $4.00. The runs in this game were insane. Central went 6-0 to briefly take a lead before half. Then after 2 starters got stuck on the bench with 4 fouls, Central went like 9-2 to take a nice lead. King put up a 14-2 at the end of the 3rd quarter to seemingly take control. Then 3 consecutive king TO's followed by Central baskets late to get within a basket. King struggled at the FT line for 3 quarters, but hit the ones they needed to. I had the bleachers at about 85-90% full. It seemed like many of the people standing were doing so by choice. There were open rows in the corners on the King side of the gym. Central's side seemed pretty much full. Couldn't have fit too many more people in there, though. WAC hosts Milwaukee Washington and Pius Saturday night. That should be interesting. I imagine both schools will travel well. I have heard through the grapevine that cost is definitely one of the factors behind the move to HS sites, but I doubt the WIAA would ever admit that. It will be interesting to see how Saturday's games go.
  8. The Rufus King AD is a good friend of mine. He says this was completely blown out of proportion by the newspaper. There were a couple hard fouls at the end of the game, and the officials called a couple double technicals on these occasions. On the last foul, players got up off the bench but the coaches held them back. King's gym is all balcony seating, so I am not sure what spectators ended up on the floor. King's coach took his team off the floor while things cooled down. It was actually the Riverside coach's idea to not finish the game. King was up 13 and about to shoot free throws. The coaches and officials agreed and that was that. The game was broadcast by 540 and the guy who called the game agreed that this happens often in highly-contested tournament games, but you only hear about the games in MPS. He said the students and fans behaved well. I will be at King at WA Central tonight. WA Central was not pre-selling any tickets and had no worries about a sell-out.
  9. This is why I imagine that cost is a factor in moving them from the larger, non-school sites. I really liked when they played 2 separate sectionals at the AL.
  10. Those games are technically sectional semi-finals. To its credit, the gym at WA Central seats a couple thousand. Probably 20 rows of bleachers on each side of the floor than span the entire length of the court and then some. They could also set up bleachers behind each basket and fit another few hundred if needed. They are also hosting a D2 sectional final. That sectional final is at Racine Horlick, which is just as big, if not bigger than the gym at WA Central. Kettle Moraine also has a big gym from what I remember. I assume SPASH and Manty have large gyms as well. I wonder if this is a cost-saving measure. I assume places like the AL and Wisconsin Lutheran College charge rent to use the facility, on top of paying officials, scorers, etc, which come out of gate receipts. WA Central hosted a lower division sectional semi-final/final for a few years and it just about broke even after all expenses were paid. I went to the Sectional games at the AL a few years back and it was about 2/3 full. Neat place for the kids to play, but would have been a better atmosphere in a packed gym.
  11. For those looking for flavor choices, the new Wing Stop that just opened down the road from Miller Park is rumored to have a Coke Freestyle machine. http://www.coca-colafreestyle.com/
  12. agree with this. the credit check only dings your credit for a short time. if anything, know what the quoted rates are at a local bank or two and use that as leverage against the dealer. unrelated...don't get caught up in the loan rate/monthly payment when figuring out cost/payments. negotiate the price, then negotiate the terms. dealer's can make any monthly payment fit into any payment/rate schedule. i may have learned this the hard way...
  13. his ego was sky high this fall when he was getting put on national sports news as a source for packers/favre news the past couple summers. he probably thinks that will pan out into something. i couldn't stand him. the guy would [expletive deleted by mod] basic facts like the number of teams in a sports league and things along those lines. if you don't know the answer to something, don't make something up. ------------------------------------------------- EDIT: language… per FFE, please don't use "BS." Thanks! --1992 -------------------------------------------------
  14. Last year was just wrong. The first couple MP openers were brutal. Unfortunately we are due for another stinker soon. The word that scares me in the current forecast is "breezy".
  15. resurrecting an old topic. here is my situation: 02 honda accord with 115,000 miles. transmission slips between 1st and 2nd only when the engine is cold...after a couple cycles through the car shifts fine. took it to dealer and of course they want $3,000 for a new transmission. i want to shop it around to see what other places can do. not ready to give up on the car yet...we like only having one car payment! anyone have some other suggestions for where to take the car...preferably on the south side of milwaukee or the south/west suburbs....we live near the airport.
  16. i drive a honda pilot...love it. my model is older so it doesnt have all the bells and whistles, but i am sure the newer models have some of those. the '04 model gets in the low 20's MPG on the highway. i also drive a '09 ford escape hybrid for work. i absolutely love this car...sirius, sync, etc. gets right around 30 MPG. only problem is the cargo space is minimal compared to full size SUV's.
  17. dont get your hopes up with MPD. we had our house broken into last fall while we were out of town. thieves stold an ipod, a wii, and a laptop among other things. i have (had?) log me in installed on the computer...which allows for remote access to the computer as long as it was connected to the internet. i was able to find the IP address they were gaining internet access from and was even physically able to watch them use my computer over the internet. went to MPD with this info and they did nothing... EDIT: side note, the south division website lists a yearbook club, so that answers that question.
  18. a little dated, but some info on Lake Michigan algae, technically known as cladaphora http://www.legis.state.wi...s/Beaches/cladaphora.htm the removal of the cladaphora on a regular basis from Bradford Beach is what has virtually eliminated the stink from that part of the beach. go just a little north up the hill and the smell is still there in areas where it is not removed. Bradfrod Beach received national recognition last year as a "Blue Wave" beach, which is kind of a big deal http://www.wisn.com/news/19760204/detail.html also, when thinking about the dumping, approximately 2,000,000,000 gallons were dumped into an estimated 1,300,000,000,000,000 gallon body of water. according to the state beach monitoring website, the e coli levels at bradford beach were actually below the EPA standards on Monday. http://wibeaches.us/apex/...162592649320362::NO:RP::
  19. this is definitely worth a chance...especially since you have been a cardholder for a fair amount of time...even if you dont use the card much. the worst they can do is say no then you cancel.
  20. if you have the time, go to your court date. i have went to dates in 3 or 4 different cities and they generally will do something for you just for showing up. they may make it a non-moving violation which would be helpful for insurance.
  21. county ordinance forbids alcohol carry-ins. jazz in the park ran into the same thing recently. it is generally loosely enforced as long as everyone behaves. grills and glass containers are more strictly enforced. that said we had 2 coolers today and nobody said a word to us about them...unfortunately the air show didnt happen today due to the low ceiling.
  22. thats great, but that wouldnt have helped since it was one of my unknown places to get some real studying done
  23. are there really only 500 of these?
  24. ...and one of my favorite places to study as an undergrad at the UW. the reading room at the state historical society. http://host.madison.com/w...f-9d29-001cc4c03286.html i easily got the most work done in this room because it was nearly guaranteed that i would know exactly zero people in the entire place.
  25. there are two left fielders in the picture...
