The way Mark Redman has already befuddled the Brewers twice this year, it wouldn't matter if Peyton, not David, Manning was firing the ball for the Crew. Manning's start will determine whether we see Luis Martinez in a Brewer uniform later this week.

There's a pre-game interview nearly every night. Friday night, the guest was Huntsville Hitting Coach Sandy Guerrero, and the conversation purposefully steered away from a discussion of the more prominent players, and broke down the games instead of Noochie Varner, Alejandro Machado, and Chris Barnwell. The Brewers placed RHP Ruben Castillo of the Arizona Brewers on the disabled list with an undisclosed injury. Castillo just turned 20; the Brewers signed him out of Venezuela. This is his first year state-side. Castillo had struggled in six relief appearances in Arizona thus far this summer. -

If I heard right Weeks batted in a simulated game against Durocher and went 1-3 and was hit, I could be wrong but that's what someone at work heard from Powell I have little doubt Rickie faced Durocher in a simulated session, it's just funny that the 1-for-3 with a HBP is exactly what Lewis did at the top of the order; who knows, with the reliabilty (or lack thereof) of Arizona box scores lately, maybe that was Weeks... Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 9, High Desert 4 High Desert Site Game Summary: No Glaus, No Problem. Quakes Roll ADELANTO, CA ? The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes didn't need Anaheim Angels third baseman Troy Glaus on Friday night, as they pounded nine runs and 11 hits en route to a 9-4 win over the High Desert Mavericks at the Epicenter in Rancho Cucamonga. Last year's World Series MVP, who appeared in action against the Mavs on Tuesday and Wednesday, missed his second straight game with pain in his right shoulder. Tommy Murphy made up for Glaus' absence with a series-best four hits, with two RBIs and two runs scored. The Quakes have now won three of the first five meetings in this seven-game series. The Mavs took a 1-0 lead in the first, as Ralph Santana reached on an error and later scored from third on a balk by Quakes starter Tim Bittner. The Quakes quickly tied it in the first as Murphy scored on an RBI single from Mike Eyward. They took the lead for good, as David Gates homered for the third time in his last five games, giving the Quakes a 2-1 lead. They added a run in each of the next two innings, chasing Mavs starter Chad Petty. Petty (0-9) allowed four earned runs on seven hits on the night. The Quakes blew open the game with four in the fifth against reliever Aaron Dean. Justin Gordon and Justin Backsmeyer each worked a 1-2-3 inning out of the Mavs bullpen. The Mavs made a run in the late innings, scoring one in the eighth and two in the ninth. Scott Candelaria's RBI single plated Ozzie Chavez in the eighth. Trailing 9-2 in the ninth, Todd West's ground ball to short, scored Charlie Lozada, who walked to lead off the ninth. Lozada, who was just called up from the Arizona Brewers, made his debut in the ninth inning by pinch hitting for Jeremy Frost. Chavez rounded out the scoring by delivering a sac fly to score Johnny Raburn, making it 9-4. Chris Morris saw his 14-game hitting streak come to an end, going 0-2 on the night. Although the season-long streak stopped, Morris reached base three different times with two walks and a hit-by-pitch. The Mavs look to get back on track, sending Chris Saenz (8-8) to the hill on Saturday night. Steven Shell (6-8) goes for the Quakes. Game time from the Epicenter on Saturday is at 7:15 (9:15 Central). More from BA's Chat: Q: Grover from Queens, NY asks: With Rickie Weeks signing this week, who do you think will reach the majors first, Weeks, Prince Fielder or Anthony Gwynn? Also, do you think Weeks will remain at 2B as a major leaguer? A: Will Kimmey: The Brewers new regime has decided to keep core groups of prospects together and let them develop and move up the ladder at the same time. Those three will be in the same group, finishing at Beloit this year, then moving to high Class A in 2004, but not before. Same for the Huntsville crew, several of whom could find themselves in Milwaukee next year. Lots of scouts felt Weeks could be fine at second, but with his bat, he'd still play as a decent LF, so it's not a concern, though he's obviously more valuable with that bat in the middle infield. He's such a good athlete, I like his chances. I'll give Prince Fielder and his ridiculous bat potential the best and first odds of watching the sausage race live. Q: C. Monty from Springfield asks: Will- Any hints about the early finalists for BA's player of the year? Does the player maintain rookie status? It would seem like Harden could be the minor league player of the year, though he'll exhaust his rookie status with his call up. A: Will Kimmey: Names kicked around here lately: Prince Fielder, Zack Greinke, Joe Mauer. Harden and Miguel Cabrera won't have enough minor league time to make the list. Q: Dave from Maryland asks: Could there be a future outfield combination of Brad Nelson, Dave Krynzel, and Anthony Gwynn? A: Will Kimmey: Don't see why not. Q: James from Guthrie OK asks: Hi Will, I am going to keep asking questions in hope that you'll answer one of mine. Where in the rotation do you predict Brewer Manny Parra? A: Will Kimmey: Manny Parra has the stuff and mentality to be a top of the rotation guy. He still has plenty to learn as he refines his stuff, but he Hendrickson and Jones (if both can get over some health speed bumps) looks mighty promising for Brewers fans down the road. -

Get' em tonight, Chad! From Baseball America's Chat Today: Q: Jim Goulart from brewerfan.net asks: What's happened to LHP Chad Petty (0-8 at High Desert)? This wasn't what the Brewers bargained for when they received Petty (and OF Noochie Varner, holding his own at AA Huntsville) in the Alex Sanchez trade. Thanks. A: Will Kimmey: High Desert, one of BA Associate Editor Alan Matthews' favorite high Class A destinations, is a hitter's paradise. Plus the Brewers have kept most of their best prospects in two groups, one just above at Hunstville and the other below at Beloit. So there's not much talent there, making it one of the minors' worst teams. Think Tigers. So Petty's probably a little better than that record, like Jeremy Bonderman and Mike Maroth are in Detroit, but Petty isn't a real overpowering pitcher and hasn't had much success with his changeup. So a two-pitch pitcher in a hitter's park does not a good combination make. -

Speaking of Arizona boxes, the Brewers have told us that was regular SS Gilberto Acosta, and not Beloit's Adam Heether, who was mistakenly listed, at SS for the Arizona kids the other day. Too bad, I was hoping 2002 2nd round pick Josh Murray might have been activated. The same source "anticipates" that we'll see Rickie Weeks in action tonight. But that's not a guarantee (my words). And the source also hasn't seen an Arizona box score from last night. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif -

Replacing OF Mark Smith on the Indianapolis roster is Huntsville OF Ryan Knox, who returns to AAA. For the moment, your Huntsville outfielders are Brad Nelson, David Krynzel, and Noochie Varner. Ryan Gripp saw some time in right field a couple of weeks ago, but now he's moved on as well with his release. We'll likely see additional movement (Daryl Clark?) soon, but that's just speculation for now. -

Huntsville Site Doubleheader Summary: www.huntsvillestars.com/s...newsId=264 David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update: HISTORIC DEBUT FOR HUNDLEYMother nature made it impossible for the Stars to play Wednesdsay's game. A late afternoon thundershower made the field unplayable and left nearly a foot of water in the visitors' dugout........ Jeff Hundley had just arrived in town to spell a thinned out pitching staff, now suffering with news that Milwaukee could shut Mike Jones down for the entire year, pending news of stress tests on his sore elbow in Milwaukee, Friday........ The rainout enabled Hundley to set some Stars history Thursday night, as he became the first pitcher since Joe Klink on May 13, 1989, to record a win and a save in a double-header........ Klink, the only Star ever to accomplish this, did it on the road at Knights Stadium in Charlotte in a 6-4, 5-2 sweep......... The historic differrence is that Hundley did it in his debut as a Huntsville Star......... Hundley was 0-1 with a save in 23 appearances at High Desert at the time he was called up. Hundley filled the roster spot, not of Mike Jones, who was not officially placed on the disabled list, but of Ryan Gripp, who asked for and was given his release....... Gripper, who led the Stars in the month of July by hitting .392 with 3 HRs, had grown frustrated with his role on the bench and lack of playing time. After Brad Nelson arrived and began to play in left, Gripp's mind was made up........ Gripper is also making marriage plans in September, and felt it was aggravation he didn't need....... He was hitting .285 in 67 games, and was 5-for-8 in his last few trips as a pinch-hitter. His contribution to the Stars' first half title should be unquestioned. In game one, Mobile held a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the final inning when the Stars thrilled the crowd with a comeback........ J.J. Hardy led off with a walk, and one out later Brandon Gemoll doubled him to third. Noochie Varner was walked intentionally, then Nelson hit a chopper up the middle....... Shortstop Danny Bravo fielded the ball cleanly, but threw high to first as Hardy scored to narrow Mobile's lead to 2-1........ After Kade Johnson struck out, Chris Barnwell came to the plate in a pinch-hit role, but it was a passed ball that would score Gemoll with the tying run...... Barnwell would walk on four pitches...... Mobile manager Craig Colbert brought in reliever Alan Webb from the bullpen, but after going 3-and-1 on Alejandro Machado, Machado took a pitch low and inside for a walk that forced in Varner for a 3-2 win. The Stars snapped a scoreless duel in the 4th inning of the second game on a looping single by Mike Kremblas that scored Gemoll from 2nd base....... The Bay Bears, who have played a lot better in the second half, would rally off Dave Nolasco with two out in the 5th....... Humberto Quintero started things with a base hit to right. A sacrifice would put him in scoring position. After Freddie Guzman flied to left, Vince Faison's base hit up the middle scored Quintero to tie the game. The Stars waited until the 6th inning to make their move....... Shortstop Joe Gerber made a fine dig on a low throw from shortstop Danny Bravo on Corey Hart's grounder, but Corey's long legs got to the bag first on an extremely close play......... Gemoll then singled up the middle, sending Hart to third. Varner forced Gemoll at second........ Kremblas then bunted through an attempted squeeze that forced Corey in a rundown. Hart was a dead duck. Catcher Humberto Quintero chased Corey down, but Rico Washington's throw back to Quintero hit Corey in the back on the numbers, the ball deflecting back to the mound, and Hart scored the go-ahead run....... After Kremblas grounded out to second, moving Varner to second, Barnwell line a ball up the middle, scoring Varner with the insurance run......... All that was left after that was for for Hundley to put the ribbon on a double-header victory. Hundley did hit a batter, but his 7th inning effort was spotless. The Stars are now an incredible 7-0-3 in double-headers this season, which has to be their best record in their history for twin-bills....... That's including a couple of games where they had to make up a suspended game and there's still one to make up against Chattanooga........ The Stars now travel to Jackson to play the Diamond Jaxx in a four-game series. Ben Hendrickson (5-4, 4.07) will start game one against Diamond Jaxx right-hander Mike Nannini (9-7, 3.80)........ Nannini is 2-2 with a 2.49 ERA vs. Huntsville this season. The Stars have hit .273 off his pitching. Ryan Knox is now 1-for-17 in August....... Dave Krynzel's first time caught stealing in the 2nd game ended a string of 12 straight stolen base attempts. He hadn't been caught since June 16, but he is still well within a shot of breaking the club's season record of 20 by Luis Polonia in 1985. Krynzel has now been caught 19 times this season....... Brandon Gemoll is 10-for-23 (.435) in August....... Corey Hart is 7-for-19 (.368) in his last 5 games, but now has 93 strikeouts on the season. Thanks for the first hand Beloit reports, molitor fan and CRicks28! Brewjester, welcome. Ben Ford won't be added to the 40-man this off-season (most likely), but he would be a nice choice to ink to a AAA deal again once the new offseason signing period begins. (He will be 28 this month.) Game Two: Huntsville 3, Mobile (Padres) 1 Stars sweep; Corey Hart scores the go-ahead run in the sixth inning of this seven-inning nightcap when he escaped a rundown on a missed squeeze play (throw hit him in the back). David Nolasco goes six strong innings for his first AA victory; Jeff Hundley with the unique daily-double -- a win in Game One and a save in Game Two -- neither one came easily. Despite a few hard hit balls by both teams this night, the ball was not carrying in the southern skies. There's just no comparison between Cal and Southern League playing conditions. -

Indy Site Game Summary: TOLEDO, OHIO -- The visiting Indianapolis Indians made it a family affair on Thursday night, defeating the Toledo Mud Hens 2-1 in extra innings as Matt Childers picked up the win for Indianapolis while brother Jason Childers pitched a scoreless tenth inning for the save. After managing only a single run over the game's first nine innings, the Indians broke through in the first extra frame when Richard Paz singled with two outs to bring home Doug Jennings with the go ahead run on a ground ball through the right side of the infield against Toledo reliever Steve Avery. Jennings, who reached base on a pinch-hit walk against Franklyn German to leadoff the inning, was sacrificed to second by Tribe catcher Alex Delgado, and advanced to third on Jason Conti's groundout to first. Then with two outs, Paz hit what appeared to be a routine grounder to the right side of the Mud Hens infield, but first baseman Kevin Jordan was slow in reacting and was unable to make the play, allowing Jennings to score from third. Matt Childers, who relieved Tribe starter Ben Ford in the bottom of the eighth, allowed one hit while striking out three Mud Hens in two innings of relief to pick up his first win of the season. Matt (1-0) then gave way to older brother Jason for the final three outs as Jason needed to face only three batters in picking up his eighth save of the season. Ford, making his fifth start and 22nd appearance for the Tribe, allowed two hits and did not walk a batter in his 7.0 innings, but left with the game tied at 1-1 and did not factor in the decision. Toledo starter Seth Greisinger also pitched a solid ballgame, locking up in a fierce pitchers duel. Both starters left having allowed only one run, both of which came on solo home runs. Toledo third baseman Brant Ust, a University of Notre Dame product, got the Mud Hens on the board first with a one-out blast to deep left to make the score 1-0. Ford then went on to retire the next 13 batters he faced before allowing a two-out single to Andres Torres in the sixth. In 32.0 innings as a starter this season, Ford has walked only four batters while striking out 27. Pete Zoccolillo tied the score in the top of the seventh inning when his one-out blast off Greisinger landed beyond the right field fence for his 10th home run of the season. Greisinger pitched 7.2 innings for Toledo before leaving with two outs and two Indians on base in the top of the eighth. German (1-3) pitched out of the jam by getting Jim Rushford to fly out to left before retiring the Indians in the top of the ninth. He was then allowed to start the top of the tenth, but after walking Jennings and recording the first out on Delgado's sacrifice, Avery was brought into the game. With the win, the Indians (51-67) were able to avoid a sweep of the three-game series at Toledo (59-60). Next up for the Tribe will be a three-game tilt with the Charlotte Knights at Victory Field. Indians lefthander Luis Martinez (3-0) will make his fourth start for the Tribe on Friday as he looks to extend his 20.1 inning scoreless streak against Jon Adkins (7-7, 4.21) and the Knights.
