  3. David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update: ENCOURAGING RETURNA pitch limit was set on Ben Hendrickson at around 50 pitches, not knowing if his forearm would flare up or not. Hendrickson, who is expected now to anchor the playoff rotation, left his last start after one inning, because of some slight discomfort in his shoulder and difficulty in warming up. Stan Kyles, wisely at that time, removed him, seeing his velocity was affected....... Under the eye of pitching coach Kyles, Ben passed that in the 5th inning, and after 60 pitches, when he walked Wilmy Caceres, Kyles came out to see how his pitcher was doing........ Apparently there was nothing to worry Stan about, so with a scoreless duel with Steve Kelly going on, Kyles left him in....... After that visit, Hendrickson retired the next four hitters, and was removed for a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the 6th, after throwing 75 pitches, 47 for strikes (62.7%)....... Most encouraging. Hendrickson, this time, looked sharp, allowing only five hits and a walk in six scoreless innings. He went full on only three hitters and was efficient, thowing just five pitches in the 2nd inning, eight in the 4th, and eleven in the 6th........ Along the way, he would get some smart defense, and one eye-popping, jaw dropping catch by David Krynzel in the 2nd inning....... After Steve Smitherman singled to lead off the 2nd inning for Chattanooga, Jesse Gutierrez lined Hendrickson's first pitch toward left-center field. Krynzel made a full-extension dive to his right, snaring the ball off the top of the grass with a backhand catch, the type you always see Jim Edmonds or Tim Salmon make on ESPN. If that wasn't enough, he got up and doubled off the runner...... There's no doubt at all about Krynzel's defense. He is simply the best in the league, even while in the middle of a horrid slump....... Krynzel is 25-for-130 since July for a .192 average, and is hitting .130 in August. He has also struck out 21 times in 54 at-bats this month (38.9%) and 14 times in his last 31 at-bats (45.1%). He struck out in the 1st tonight, even though he was ahead 3-and-0 on Lookouts starter Steve Kelly........ In the 4th he made amends somewhat, battling Kelly for a walk after fouling off four pitches. He reached 2nd on a wild pitch, but got a poor jump trying to steal third, and was thrown out to establish a new club record --- 21 times caught stealing in a single season. Krynzel did reach base, on another error-plagued inning for the Lookouts in the 6th....... The 6th started with a pinch-double by Chris Barnwell ending Ben Hendrickson's night....... Barnwell is now 4-for-9 as a pinch-hitter this year for the Stars. This was his first pinch-double...... Alejandro Machado then dropped a bunt down the third base line. Edwin Encarnacion fielded the ball, but his throw sailed into the baseline and Machado knocked the ball out of the glove of Jesse Gutierrez. Encarnacion was charged with an error and Machado with a sacrifice. Barnwell broke the scoreless duel when the ball bounced away from Gutierrez........ Up to this point, Steve Kelly was tough, allowing only a single to left-center by J.J. Hardy in the 1st. After that, he retired 12 of the next 14 batters. In the end, errors just as they did Wednesday, just ate Kelly up......... Krynzel then ripped a wicked two-hopper at Andy Beattie, skidding under his glove for another error, sending Machado from first to third....... Next, Hardy hit an 0-2 roller to third base. This time, Encarnacion made a fine play picking up the ball on the run and throwing home, forcing Machado at the plate....... With runners on first and second, Corey Hart broke out of a 2-for-19 slump to deliver a double down the left field line into the corner. Krynzel and Hardy virtually walked in, giving the Stars a 3-0 lead. The Stars threatened for a final time in the 7th inning after Noochie Varner hit a leadoff double all the way to the wall in left field. Brad Nelson's deep fly to the black hole in center field moved Varner to third, but he was stranded there as relief pitcher Casey Dehart struck out Kade Johnson (who struck out three times) and Matt Parker to end the inning. The combination of Parker and Ryan Miller closed the deal for Hendrickson's 6th win, his first since July 28, but the 8th and 9th were shaky....... Caceres easily beat out a perfect bunt down the first base side and Encarnacion singled to left off Parker. Guye Senjem's bunt to the third base side of the mound moved the runners into scoring position with one out........ All-star left fielder Steve Smitherman is a .310 hitter vs. Huntsville. Next to Guye Senjem (4 HRs, 14 RBI), he's the Lookouts most destructive force against the Stars pitching staff, but he's been a frequent strikeout victim as well. Smitherman went 2-and-2 and fouled off three pitches, before Parker reached back to his breaking ball and got the big clutch strikeout. Jesse Gutierrez lined a 1-2 pitch to Nelson in left to end the inning, but the 9th was even more interesting. In the 9th, Andy Beattie, another Southern League All-Star, a little guy with a lot of wallop, pulled a 1-1 Parker pitch over all three billboard sections in right field....... Parker might have gotten out of the inning uneventfully after striking out Dane Sardinha and pinch-hitter Jason Hill, but Jeff Bannon, playing in his first game for the Lookouts, walked, after Parker came back from a 3-0 count....... The Lookouts have made 110 transactions this season compared to the Stars' 39. Can't imagine what that does to a team's chemistry. Camaraderie is one of those intangible factors that is very important to a winning ballclub. The club that stays together, plays together, and learns how to win together. The 1994 team that won when the Southern League Championship consisted of only 35 players, the 3rd lowest total in Stars history. The 1985 team also used only 35 players. The 2003 Stars have used 39 players to date, the lowest total since 1996, when the Stars used a record low of 33 players, and that includes some who were on the team oh, so briefly like Doug Davis, Tim Crabtree, Jeff Robinson, and Brian Moon. After Caceres singled to center, putting runners on first and second, Parker was yanked, and Miller, who picked up his first save since April Wednesday night, was called in on another save situation....... Edwin Encarnacion dribbled Miller's 1-0 pitch to the third base side to load the bases, Hart not attempting to throw........ Miller got behind 2-and-0 on Guye Senjem, then fought back at 2-2. The game then ended on a very unusual play. Guye Senjem, a .200 hitter vs. the Stars, but with 4 HRs and 14 RBI, tried to check his swing on a pitch that looked like a slider. Very low. Senjem went too far for strike three, but the ball clipped his foot and caromed to Miller, who ran in from the mound, picked up the ball, and flipped it to catcher Kade Johnson, for a 1-2 forceout to end the game. The Huntsville Stars Booster Club will apparently go on for another year. Thursday night's turnout was very good, much better than expected, and the response was inspiring to its leadership....... Once with a membership of over 300, the Huntsville Stars Booster Club, once winning praise by outside observers as the best in the league, was in danger of dying of apathy....... Down to 130-140 members, most meetings had to dismiss for lack of a quorum........ The Rocky and Eagle awards will be handed out tomorrow at a banquet meeting under the tent after the game and hopefully we'll have good participation from the players. The Rocky award, named after former utilityman Rocky Coyle (Stars '85-'86) is awarded to the player who best exemplifies the hustle, team spirit, and love for the game that has contributed to the team's success. Last year's winner was Jared Mathis, and previous winners have included David Gibralter, Eric Fox, Miguel Tejada, and Toby Kominek........ The Eagle is a role model award that is given for sportsmanship, civic interest, inspiration, and team spirit as well. It's named after former pitcher Bob Bennett, whose Lakota Indian name was One Eagle. Bennett spent many off hours at schools promoting and educating kids on his American Indian heritage....... Put them together, and they're more popularity contests than acheivement awards, but they're awards of appreciation....... I know the winners cause I'm presenting the awards tomorrow, so you'll have to wait. You can go to Johnny Phillips' web site for more information by clicking on the link below and then clicking on the Booster Club website....... These awards are usually Sunday affairs, but there was not one cotton picking weekend home game on the schedule in August this year........ Gotta go. Time to get dressed for work. Great job as always, David -- and yes, by all means, get dressed! Booster Page Link David mentioned: www.geocities.com/starsbo...osters.htm

  5. High Desert's audio feed is unavailable (as of "post time", anyway), so there's no Brewer-related action to set your speakers to for the rest of the night. While waiting for box scores from Provo, Utah and Lancaster, California might make for an enjoyable action-packed evening, I'll take the hint and call it a night while all the Snapper fans drag themselves home from Miller Park. We'll fill in any blanks in the Link Report early Friday AM....
  6. Huntsville 3, Chattanooga (Reds) 1 Stars win despite getting only four hits; Ben Hendrickson sets aside any health fears with six shutout innings; Matt Parker pitched out of big trouble in the eighth; Ryan Miller was asked to get the final out and save the game after two more Parker baserunners reached in the ninth -- after an infield single loaded the bases, Miller got a strike out to close it out. Exciting audio ending....
  7. Top of the ninth, due up in the 9th against RHP Mike Williams are: Mark Smith Perez Clayton Pitcher's spot You've got Podsednik, VanderWal, and Kieschnick ready on the bench. Now Yost pinch-hit Pods for the RH-hitting Smith. Scott walked, and I'm pretty sure Yost saw that as a leadoff-guy with speed thing, so I can't fault it completely. Yet somehow I was thinking let Smith (with one hit on the night) bat and save the bats for the next three spots. Another frustrating "L" http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/mad.gif
  8. On a light night here on the board, for the sake of those returning from Miller Park later: Keith Ginter on base three more times. Yummy. Has Richie Sexson ever met a double-play situation he didn't like? Sheesh. Wow, an appeal at second base goes against the Phillies after Chase Utley tagged to third. I can't remember the last time that was called, and apparently it was a bad call. Bullpen's been fine; will Obermueller get another chance? Heck, maybe we'll see Luis Martinez in his spot before Doug Davis' spot. All those guys will be up after September 1st.
  9. Arizona Brewer third baseman Lendon Willis was released by the Brewers on August 9th. This will probably go down as one of the "mystery" transactions that fades away with time. Willis missed nearly all of this season for unknown reasons, then reappeared in two games just last week as a DH, going 4-for-6. Apparently, a .667 average earns you your release. But seriously, I had thought Willis was older when he was drafted in the 22nd round in 2002 out of a Tennessee community college, but he won't be 21 until October. As a 19-year-old rookie in Arizona last year, he hit .277 with 14 extra-base hits in just 159 AB's. Willis' biggest drawback last season was his 19 errors in 44 games. So why release a 20-year-old third baseman? Not exactly awash in hot corner candidates, the Brewers. Something else must be at play here, and it wouldn't be fair to speculate, so we'll likely never know.
  10. Very cool hearing Phillie legend Harry Kalas here in the 6th. An NFL Films moment, for sure...

INTL INDIANAPOLIS AT CHARLOTTE NOTE: THE GAME HAS BEEN POSTPONED DUE TO RAIN AND WILL BE MADE UP AS PART OF A DOUBLEHEADER ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 15 AT 5:15 PM CDT.
  13. No, too busy listening to Wes Obermueller get lit up, although at 3-1 the damage has been minimized, bases left loaded twice. Helms has been interesting, but the Phillie innings at-bat have been so long JP's running out of material: "So do you have any cats or dogs?" -- Ugh. But otherwise, Wes' country boy routine is playing well. Ginter on base twice through three innings...
  14. First inning, first and third, no outs, no runs. Why do I think Gwynn, Weeks, and Fielder would have gotten a run in? OK, enough Snapper references -- for now.

  19. Thursday 's Daily Menu : Interesting group of starters today.... We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify for the playoffs with a second-place division finish. It now appears that Helena is playing for additional home-field rights as well. All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio begins approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed... 20. Jim Callis of Baseball America with an interesting take on the major league contract: When I discussed major league contracts for draftees in the last Ask BA, I left out a significant benefit to the player. Here's what someone who works for a sports-management firm (we'll keep him anonymous) wrote me: One more thing to point out as an advantage for the player if he can get to the majors on pace with his contract: future compensation after his first contract expires. Both Josh Beckett's and Eric Munson's contracts out of the 1999 draft expired at the end of the 2002 season. Going into 2003 season, Beckett had one year and 30 days of major league service time, while Munson had 0+52. Normally, with that service time, Beckett would be paid about $325,000 while Munson would get about $310,000. (Tampa Bay paid every player who wasn't eligible for arbitration $300,000, so it all depends on the team.) Beckett and Munson, however, are different. Beckett in 2002 made the equivalent of $2,156,250 ($1.25 million base salary plus his $3.625 million signing bonus prorated over four years, which is $906,250). Major league teams only are allowed to give a maximum pay cut of 20 percent, so as a 1+30 in 2003, Beckett is making $1.725 million. Munson earned the equivalent of $2.125 million in 2002 ($1.25 million base plus his $3.5 million prorated signing bonus, which equaled $875,000). Munson is earning $1.7 million in 2003 as a 0+52. Even if the Tigers cut him the max 20 percent every year before arbitration, he still will earn $5.398 million in base salaries during his four years before arbitration. The normal player probably makes just above $1 million. Those contracts are golden as long as the player can produce at the major league level. One thing that will be affected will be the salaries he'll get in arbitration. One of the points in arbitration is how well the player has been paid in the past. Obviously, Beckett and Munson won't be able to relate themselves to the usual comparables because of all of the money they already will have earned. It will be interesting to see how each side handles arbitration if it gets that far.
  21. 19-year-old switch-hitting catcher/first baseman Carlos Corporan, the Brewers' 12th round draft pick out of Lake City Community College in Florida this past spring, has been transferred to Helena, where he'll assist Alberto Segura and Vinnie Rottino with duties behind the plate. It appears that the Brewers are hesitant to return Manny Ramirez to time behind the dish, where he's yet to appear this season. Carlos Corporan's Arizona Numbers: www.baseballamerica.com/c...poran%2C+c
  22. David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update: NOLASCO AND NELSONWe're still waiting Milwaukee. The Stars have been lucky to get good pitching from the rotation and a relief pitcher or two who's available every night, but how long will it be before Frank Kremblas finds the jar empty......... After Tuesday night's 16-inning, nearly five-hour marathon, the pen was down to one man -- Ryan Miller, who despite giving up a home run to Jesse Gutierrez tonight, kept Chattanooga off the bases for his first save since April 27........ But suppose Nolasco had been bombed early tonight, or Miller found himself with the bases loaded and nobody out......... Miller has a 4.23 ERA since starting the season with a 0.55 mark in April. Protecting a one-run lead and no one to go to but a position player doesn't cut it. It's an unnecessary situation........ By the way, it happened tonight at Adelanto, California when the Mavericks lost 7-6 in 15 innings, as infielder Johnny Raburn came in for an ineffective (as usual) Tommy Marx, and with the bases loaded, hit a Lancaster batter who had struck out six times that night........ The Stars, by the way, was the only minor league team in the Brewers organization to win Wednesday night. Anyway, the Stars roster still sits at 23, several days after rosters were allowed to expand...... And that's counting Mike Jones, who's probably shut down for the season, although he hasn't officially been placed on the disabled list, and Ben Diggins, who's out not just this year, but next as well........ Where's that body, Milwaukee?. Nevertheless, the Stars retained a ½ game lead over the Barons who destroyed Mobile starter Chris Rojas tonight. See the Standings link for all the scores........ www.starsboxscore.com/standing.html Nolasco threw 96 pitches, 60 for strikes (62.5%)........ And we wait to see what tomorrow brings. Outfielder Brad Nelson, in a 5-for-31 skid, homered into the wind blowing out to left in the 7th inning, high over the Corr Wireless sign, giving the Stars not only an important insurance run, but the margin of victory in this game......... It was his 1st home run as a Star, hopefully of many as I expect to see Nellie in the lineup next season....... But the Stars can also send their thank you cards to 3rd baseman Edwin Encarnacion and Chattanooga pitcher John Koronka for a 3-error, 8-batter 2nd inning. Leading off the inning, Noochie Varner chopped a ball up the middle that found a hole between Koronka's outstretched left arm and torso as he finished his delivery. 2nd baseman Andrew Beattie ranged over, almost behind 2nd base to field the ball near the bag, spun and threw ----- into the Chattanooga dugout. It was a tough play, so Noochie was given a hit and an error on the advance....... Nelson followed and he hit a slow bouncer up Beattie's way. Beattie picked the ball up, but had no play and runners were on the corners........ On a 1-1 pitch to Mike Kremblas, Koronka attempted to pickoff Nelson, and it for a moment appeared that he had him in a rundown, but a balk was called, Varner scored, and Nelson, who was headed to second, got the base, anyway........ On the 3-and-2 pitch, Kremblas hit a ball sharply to Encarnacion, but he threw the ball away, putting runners on 2nd and 3rd........ David Nolasco, next, shot a ball past Gutierrez, who was playing in. The ball rolled into right field for an RBI single, putting runners on the corners again........ Chris Barnwell up. He hits a comebacker to the mound. Koronka chases Kremblas back to third and throws to Encarnacion, but throwing home, hits Kremblas in the back for the 3rd error of the inning. Kremblas scores, giving the Stars a 4-1 lead. After that, Koronka settled down and retired 8 of the next 9 Stars at the plate until the 4th when Dave Krynzel tripled a 1-1 pitch into the right field corner and J.J. Hardy walked on five pitches....... Krynzel thus becomes only the 3rd player in Stars history to hit 10 triples in a season. (Luis Polonia hit a remarkable 18 in 1985 and Demond Smith hit 14 in 1996)........ Catcher Jason Hill gave Corey Hart a second life when he dropped a foul ball behind the plate, but after fouling off another pitch, Corey, recovered from the effects of some bad buffet in Jackson, flied out to right to end the inning. The Stars would threaten all night, leaving runners on 2nd and 3rd in the 5th and once more in the 6th. The Stars wasted all ten of their runners in the first six innings, but Nolasco was taking care of business....... After Encarnacion, a .205 hitter vs. Huntsville, made amends with a 2-out, 2-run HR to left in the 5th, Nolasco retired the next seven hitters on 26 pitches, striking out three. All but two hitters received first pitch strikes........ Miller took over and retired four straight until Gutierrez hit his first pitch for a home run to left, but Andrew Beattie grounded out to Brandon Gemoll and Jason Hill flied to center to end the game. For Nolasco, it was his 2nd straight quality start, giving up a combined four runs on six hits in 13 innings....... John Koronka lost his league-leading 13th game, and his 7th in his last 8....... Against the Stars, Koronka is now 1-3 with a 7.41 ERA in four starts this season........ Frank Kremblas loaded his lineup with three left-handers tonight and it paid off as lefties have hit .366 against Koronka this season. Gemoll, Krynzel, and Nelson went a combined 4-for-9 off him, with a pair of RBIs........ Thursday night should be interesting. Ben Hendrickson (5-4, 4.15) will take the mound against Steve Kelly (2-1, 2.31), who was activated off the disabled list a week ago....... J.J. Hardy picked up his 100th hit of the season, tonight, in the 6th inning. J.J. is 9-for-20 in his last five games (.450) and hitting .364 in his last 9 games....... Corey Hart committed his 5th error this month, dropping a sharply hit grounder in the 4th that did no damage, but at the plate, he's in a 2-for-18 slide. His average dropped below .300 for the first time since July 24....... Noochie Varner is 8-for-22 (.364) in his last five games, and .298 for August. The front office had a little help from the local Boys and Girls Club tonight, so 990 showed up this time, an improvement of almost 200 from last night's throng........ The Stars now must average almost 2,100 to escape the ignominy of attracting less than 200K for only the 2nd time in their history. Last year, the Stars drew 206,068......... Still the front office is saying they're 15% up over last year. Just what they mean, I don't know....... Before the game, many of the Stars signed autographs for the Boys and Girls Club under the tent on the right field side. This has nothing to do with the Stars or the Brewers, but you don't often see this....... In a Wednesday Gulf Coast Rookie League game, the Phillies trounced the Tigers at Lakeland, 29-5!...... The Phils scored 10 unearned runs on 7 Tiger errors.

  24. Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 7, High Desert 6, 15 innings High Desert Site Game Summary: Mavs Lose Marathon in 15Lancaster, CA -The High Desert Mavericks and Lancaster JetHawks went 15 innings on Wednesday night, before the JetHawks finally ended the 4:41 minute marathon with a run in the bottom of the 15th, beating the Mavs by a final score of 7-6 at the Hangar in Lancaster. Position player Johnny Raburn, making his first ever appearance on the hill in a Mavs uniform, hit Marland Williams with the bases loaded to force in the game-winning run. High Desert used a total of seven pitchers on the night. The game remained scoreless in the extra innings until the 15th. Tommy Marx (0-3) began the inning for the Mavs, but walked the first two hitters he faced. Raburn came into the game and hit Jason Gorman on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases. Marland Williams, who set a California League record on the night by striking out six times, finished off a dismal night with the game-winning RBI, getting hit by Raburn's 2-2 pitch. The Mavs blew a 5-0 lead, as Chad Petty missed out on an opportunity to win his first game in a Mavs uniform. Todd West's groundout scored Jeremy Frost in the second as the Mavs took a 1-0 lead. High Desert added four in the third, as Scott Candelaria had an RBI triple and scored on Frost's two-out double. Froilan Villanueva and Frost both scored on John Toner's two-run single, making it 5-0. The JetHawks got to Petty in the third, as Kyle Nichols hit his League-leading 26th homer of the year, making it 5-2. Mike DiRosa added his fifth of the year, three batters later, making it 5-3. Tony Stavros came on in the sixth after Petty allowed the first two men to reach. Stavros worked out of the jam and went on to work a total of three innings while allowing just one unearned run. Leading 5-4 in the ninth, the Mavs added an important insurance run, as Toner, who earlier committed a double-error that led to an unearned run for the JetHawks, collected his third hit of the night. After Toner doubled, Charlie Lozada singled him in, making it 6-4. The JetHawks scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings. Mike Thiessen doubled to drive home Jason Gorman, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, making the score 6-5. Mavs reliever Bobby Bystrowski was then lifted in favor of left-hander Justin Gordon. Thiessen stole third and then scored the tying run as catcher Jeremy Frost's throw to third sailed into left field. JetHawks reliever Josh Kranawetter (2-1), who was only the third Lancaster pitcher used on the night, got the win with three scoreless innings of relief. In the defensive play of the game, Ralph Santana made a game-saving catch in the bottom of the tenth, keeping the game tied at 6-6. Gordon allowed a two-out double by Mike DiRosa. Edgar Varela hit a ball towards the right field corner. Santana raced towards the foul stripe and made a diving catch to temporarily save the game for the Mavs. Chris Saenz (8-8) throws on Thursday night in Lancaster, against the JetHawks' Justin Wechsler (8-9). Game time from the Hangar is at 7:15 (9:15 Central). High Desert Box Score: Nice relief eforts by Stavros, Danny Stout, and Gordon; but let me get this straight -- after Tommy marx walks his only two men in the 15th, Tim Blackwell has so little faith in him to get out of the inning that he brings in position player Johnny Raburn? Yikes...
