  2. Wednesday's Daily Menu : We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville, Beloit and Helena within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify for the playoffs with a second-place division finish. It now appears that Helena is playing for additional home-field rights as well. All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio begins approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed... 4. From the Helena Web Site: Helena was able to bang out 18 hits dispite being without star catcher Lou Palmisano who is out for the season with a broken ankle and is on his way back to Milwaukee for surgery, and OF Drew Anderson who is out with a wrist injury. Actually, they said "Drew Barnes", but since 3B Justin Barnes played last night and Anderson didn't, I imagine they mean the outfielder drafted in the 24th round out of the University of Nebraska.

  6. C Lou Palmisano has been officially placed on Helena's disabled list to make room for LHP Gabriel Mendoza, who is ready to return to action and has been activated. You have probably noticed from the Arizona box scores as of late, but RHP Jayson Durocher was officially assigned to the Maryvale roster on an injury rehab assignment.

  8. David Weiser 's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update: Good news on Ben Hendrickson... STARS WASTE 15, LOSE IN 16The Stars have seven more home dates in which to crack the 200,000 mark in attendance this year. Without a weekend game and only one more Friday game, it's going to be tough. They must average 1,921 at the gate for the remainder of the season and need the help of one big crowd........ It's bad enough for the front office that the throngs of little leaguers who filled the ballpark in June and July are back in school, and football is once again becoming a preoccupation with the casual fans who once came to fill the time, but the possibility of a rainout dampened the intentions of a lot of Parkway travelers with pockets-full of dollar bills for parking, who might have otherwise stopped by........ The huge rains never came, although the game was delayed 19 minutes as storms skirted the city to the west and the south of the stadium tonight. For most of the evening, a light rain fell, bringing out a few umbrellas, but not heavy enough to stop play until the 6th when Chattanooga halted it to tend to the mound. The rain was only a factor in keeping the crowd down to one of the smallest of the year. The Lookouts were a hot team coming into today, winning eight of their last ten games, and trying to stay in the mix of a four-team logjam for first place. The Barons also lost and Mobile won, so the Stars still lead Birmingham by a half-game, and Mobile and Chattanooga by just one game after tonight........ In the top of the 1st, Alejandro Diaz led off with a single off the glove of starter Jeff Housman and onto center field. Edwin Encarnacion then drove a ball into right-center field off the Purity sign for a double, but the relay throw from J.J. Hardy somehow nailed Diaz at the plate. It was a very close play at the plate, as Diaz tried to slide around Kade Johnson's tag........ Encarnacion would score, however, on a stolen base and a passed ball....... Jeff Housman threw 24 pitches that inning; however, he settled down and threw ten in each of the next three, while retiring eight straight until the 4th, when Andrew Beattie laid down a bunt single. The Stars got some smart defense in the 5th inning as Johnson nailed another at the plate...... Former Birmingham Baron Jason Dellaero led off the inning with a single to center and was sacrificed to second. Diaz, next, ripped a 2-2 offering to right field. Noochie Varner fired the ball home to Kade, successfully holding the runner at third. Kade then threw to second, trying in vain to get Diaz, but Alejandro Machado, seeing Dellaero trying to advance, threw back to Johnson for a play at the plate. Kade blocked the plate and made the hard tag on Dellaero for the out. After the first of three double plays for the Stars in the 6th inning, the Stars got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning....... Dave Krynzel led off with a bloop single into no-man's land in left, but he was thrown out trying to steal for the 20th time this season, tying a club record that Luis Polonia has held since 1985........ Josh Hall, 0-2 vs. the Stars this season, walked Hardy. The failed attempt to steal hurt the Stars in the end, for Brad Nelson stepped up and doubled Hardy over to third. Hardy then scored on Brandon Gemoll's grounder. Varner then singled past shortstop Dellaero into left. Steve Smitherman's throw to get Nellie at the plate was by catcher Dane Sardinha, and the Stars took a 2-1 lead. That wouldn't last long........ After a pair of walks by Matt Parker in the 9th, Sardinha delivered a one-out single to center, scoring Steve Smitherman, giving the Lookouts a 3-2 lead. A 6-4-3 double play got the Stars out of the inning. The Stars tied it up once more and they could have put it away, if not for an on-the-money relay throw from Andy Beattie that cut down leadoff hitter Gemoll at the plate on a follow-up triple into the right field corner by Varner. Varner did eventually score the tying run on a clutch single to left by Johnson....... Kade now has a pair of three-hit games, all within a span of three days, and is on a 7-for-14 tear with four RBIs. He has shortened up his swing lately and tried to make more contact, and it appears to have some success....... But with Chris Barnwell, who walked, on second, and Johnson on first, Chattanooga manager Phillip Wellman made a pitching change and brought in lefty Bobby Bevel........ Bevel was in the Southern League way back in 1999 with the Carolina Mudcats and two years later, with the Suns. He's a tough pitcher to run on, because he has almost no windup. He steps out with his left foot and just hurls the ball. It's hard to imagine how he gets any velocity with that kind of windup, but his big pitch is really an overhand curve, and that's what he used to retire the Stars in the 9th, getting pinch-hitter Daryl Clark on a 1-2 breaking ball and Machado on a pop-up to short. Bevel held the Stars hitless, followed by Travis Thompson, who struck out three and gave up just one hit for three innings........ The Stars loaded the bases in the 13th inning, but Johnson popped out to 2nd baseman Andy Beattie on an 0-1 pitch . That was the only real threat the Stars posed until the 16th........ Barnwell led off the bottom of the 16th with a single, and raced aggressively to third on a single to left by Kade, who took second on the throw to third. Mike Kremblas, who would have pitched for the 2nd time this season in the 17th inning had the game continued, singled on the infield to drive in Barney. Machado successfully sacrificed the runners to second and third, but with the chance to win this game, Brian Shackleford struck out Krynzel and after walking Hardy intentionally, got Nelson to ground out to first to end a nearly five-hour game. The Lookouts, who have climbed from last place in this half to within a game of first, have won 10 of their last 13 and are now 5-1 in extra inning games...... The Stars, who have had season-long success against Chattanooga, are now 14-6 against the Lookouts and 3-9 at the Joe........ 12-game loser John Koronka goes for the Lookouts tomorrow with more threatening weather in store. Dave Nolasco (1-2, 4.50) will try to get the win for the Stars. I declare J.J. Hardy's slump officially over, although it's lacking some punch......... He is hitting .385 in his last seven games, and 8-for-17 in his last four. Ben Hendrickson, who was removed for precautionary reasons after throwing just an inning in his last start, will pitch Thursday. There was some worry about his shoulder, but the club report says Ben just had difficulty getting loose that day, and that there is nothing wrong with his arm or his shoulder.

  11. Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 7, High Desert 2 High Desert Site Game Summary: Lancaster, CA - Lancaster starting pitcher John Castellanos dominated the High Desert hitters on Tuesday night, working into the eighth inning, in earning the victory in a 7-2 win over the High Desert Mavericks at the Hangar in Lancaster. The loss leaves the Mavs with a two-game losing streak and a second half mark of just 13-39. Castellanos (6-1) shut out the Mavs through seven full innings, finally leaving before recording an out in the eighth. The Mavs had just five hits in seven innings against the right hander, who was charged with a run after leaving the game. Mavs starter Danny Kolb (5-10) threw well but was a victim of no run support. Kolb went five innings, allowing three runs while scattering ten hits. He struck out eight, while walking just one. The JetHawks took the lead against Kolb in the third, as Kyle Nichols doubled to right to knock in Mike Thiessen. Edgar Varela's bloop single to left plated Jay Garthwaite as the JetHawks took a 2-0 lead. Lancaster added another against Kolb in the fourth, as Danny Richar tripled and scored on a wild pitch, giving the JetHawks a 3-0 lead. Castellanos cruised through the first six innings, allowing just four total base runners. Traling 5-0 in the eighth, Chris Morris walked to open the frame. After Billy Biggs came out of the Lancaster bullpen, Jeremy Frost's sac fly to center put the Mavs on the board at 5-1. The JetHawks added two in the eighth off Mavs reliever Justin Backsmeyer on a two-run double by Jay Garthwaite. Trailing 7-1 in the ninth, High Desert opened the frame with three straight singles, the third of which was by Charlie Lozada. The 18-year old finished the night with three hits and an RBI, as the Mavs cut the deficit to 7-2. JetHawks reliever Doug Slaten was removed for Pete Sikaras with two outs and the tying run in the on-deck circle. Sikaras recorded his second save in as many nights, and league-best 18th of the year, getting Froilan Villanueva to ground out to third to end the game. The Mavs and JetHawks meet for the third time in the four-game series on Wednesday night. Chad Petty (0-9) throws for High Desert against Lancaster's Keith Whatley. Game time from the Hangar is at 7:15 (9:15 Central). 15. Indy Site Game Summary: NORFOLK, VA -- The visiting Indianapolis Indians shutout the Norfolk Tides 1-0 in the first of a two-game series at Norfolk on Tuesday evening. Indians pitchers Pasqual Coco, Shane Nance, and Jason Childers combined to limit the Tides to only five baserunners in the game to combine on the three-hit shutout. Tribe catcher Cody McKay scored the game's only run in the top of the fifth inning after leading off the frame by being plunked on the shoulder on a pitch from Norfolk starter Tyler Yates. McKay then stole second base before Yates (1-2) issued a one-out walk to Steve Scarborough. With runners on first and second, Tribe starting pitcher Coco stepped to the plate riding a four game hitting streak. Coco then lined a single to center field off Yates to extend his streak, and on the single Norfolk's centerfielder Esix Snead had the ball go off his glove allowing McKay to score easily from third base on the error. Coco (9-7) earned the win pitching 7.0 innings allowing only three hits while striking out three. Norfolk had only two baserunners reach as far as third base in the game, and the closest the Tides came to scoring was in the bottom of the seventh inning when Prentice Redman walked with one out and advanced to second on a single one batter later. With one out Norfolk's Kenny Kelly then hit a grounder right between the legs of Indians third baseman Keith Luuloa. The ball rolled into left field where it was fielded by Ryan Knox. As Redman rounded third base, Knox's relay throw to home plate was caught by Cody McKay and the tag applied to prevent Redman from scoring the tying run. Shane Nance relieved Coco to start the eighth inning and retired all three batters he faced to extend his team-high scoreless streak to 32.0 innings. Jason Childers pitched the final inning for the Indians retiring Major League All-Star Mike Piazza on a flyball to right field leading off the inning. Childers then got Russ Johnson to ground out to short, and struck out Prentice Redman for the final out of the game to record his ninth save of the season. Piazza, who started at catcher and batted third for Norfolk as part of a rehab assignment for the New York Mets, was 0-for-4 in the game. With the shutout, the Indians as a team have not allowed a run in 19.1 innings, dating back to Mike Rivera's two-out home run in the first inning of the Tribe's 4-3 victory in 11 innings on Sunday versus Charlotte. The Indians (54-68) and Tides (56-67) will conclude the two-game series on Wednesday night when the Tribe sends righthander Ben Ford (3-3, 2.82) to the mound to face lefty Mike Bacsik (1-7, 4.73) and Norfolk. The Indians will then travel to Charlotte for two games before returning to Indianapolis on Saturday to conclude the season series with Norfolk in a two-game set at Victory Field. 16. As mentioned elsewhere on the Minor League forum here today, RHP Ryan Trytten was released from Beloit's roster in order to make room for 2003 # 1 draft pick Rickie Weeks. Trytten was a 39th round draft pick in 2000 who made his debut in 2001 in Arizona. Over the last two seasons in Beloit, he simply allowed too many baserunners (and runs), and wasn't striking out nearly enough batters, especially for a right-hander. 20. David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update: BACK ON TOPDespite a roster expansion, the Stars had no well of starters to go to, so it was up to spot starter Jeff Hundley (0-1, 4.29 at High Desert in 22 relief appearances) and the bullpen to even the final series with the Diamond Jaxx and keep the Stars on pace, and possibly overtake Birmingham in the Western Division race....... Manager Frank Kremblas and pitching coach Stan Kyles, answering the problems of a sore-armed rotation, has been leaning a lot on the bullpen in the 2nd half and getting hoped-for results....... Ken Ray has thrown 11 2/3 innings in his last three appearances, and given up just three runs. Mike Adams threw three scoreless innings in relief a week ago, and just after the start of the 2nd half, threw 5 1/3 no-hit innings in relief. Matt Childers, before his promotion, gave up just one run in 12 2/3 innings in his last four appearances. Matt Parker has not allowed a single run in three appearances covering 7 2/3 innings this month........ But as good as these pitchers have been, none has matched the recent success of Brian Adams........ Super-refreshed after not having pitched in over a week, Kremblas gave him his longest outing since June 21 when he threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief against Greenville, holding the Diamond Jaxx scoreless until he tired in the 9th, and enabling the Stars to win the final meeting of the year with the last-place Jaxx, 5-2........ The effort also put them back in 1st place, as Birmingham lost again to Chattanooga, 3-0........ In his last 7 outings, B.A., as he's known in the clubhouse, has gone 2-0 with a 1.08 ERA. The Stars scored early, but ended a string of scoring in the 2nd inning at three games....... The Stars wasted little time in the 1st. With one out, Dave Krynzel singled sharply to right. J.J. Hardy laced one to left and high off the wall for a double. Krynzel was waved around and outran the relay throw........ In the 3rd, Jeff Hundley, batting for the first time in his professional career, singled. Hundley spent the last five seasons in the Anaheim Angels organization....... Alejandro Machado followed with a single to left. After Krynzel sacrificed the runners into scoring position, a wild pitch, with J.J. at bat, scored Hundley and moved Machado to third....... Hardy walked putting runners on the corners, but Brad Nelson fouled out and Brandon Gemoll flied out to left to end the inning for Huntsville. In the 4th, leading 2-0 with a couple of runners aboard, Kade Johnson hit a line drive over the leaping Brandon Harris, scoring D.J. Clark....... Hundley sacrificed, sending runners to second and third and that set up the blow that sucked the wind out of the Diamond Jaxx....... Alejandro Machado extended his hit streak to 6 games, by driving a ball down the right field line, rattling at the base of the wall for a two-run double that scored Chris Barnwell and Johnson. That carried the day. The defense took over from there........ With one out in the bottom of the 4th, Jackson Melian walked and Donnie Hood singled. Casey Kopitzke hit a ground ball deep in the hole at second base. Machado, on the grass to his left, fielded the ball, spun around and threw on target to J.J. to get one and Hardy threw to get a gorgeous 4-6-3 double play to end the threat......... In the 5th with two out, the Diamond Jaxx loaded the bases, but Brian Adams speared a Ray Sadler liner to end the inning....... Through five innings, the Diamond Jaxx stranded eight runners. By the time Adams entered the 9th, he had retired 10 of 11 batters. Brian Adams, scoreless in four frames, was so close to making it five........ After getting Donnie Hood on a fly deep to left, Casey Kopitzke popped a 2-2 pitch to Machado, who tried to make a basket catch against a high sky and dropped it off the heel of his glove....... Aron Weston forced Kopitzke out on a sharply hit grounder to Chris Barnwell........ One out away now, Mike Dzurilla walked on five pitches, moving the speedy Weston to second....... Adams, with one more out to get, still had his overhand curve working well and a 88 mph fast ball........ But he couldn't retire Blair Barbier. His line drive base hit to center scored Weston. Brendan Harris followed with a first-pitch grounder that kicked off Barnwell's glove for a hit, a tough play that Barney has made before. The ball dribbled into left and Dzurilla scored........ Mike Adams came in from the bullpen, though, and needed only two pitches to retire Jason Dubois on a popout for his 12th save, matching Matt Childers' club high of last year. Southpaw Jeff Housman (3-0, 1.46) will start the first game of the Stars' four-game series vs. Chattanooga on Auburn Football Giveaway Night at the Joe......... The Lookouts just finished taking three out of four from the 1st place Barons, and have won 8 of their last 10. The news on Mike Jones is good........ The final results on his MRI came in and Jones was diagnosed with an elbow strain. He will begin a rehab program within the week.

  22. High Desert Site Game Summary: Lancaster, CA - The Lancaster JetHawks scored three runs in their final at-bat, beating the High Desert Mavericks by a score of 5-4 on Monday night at the Hangar in Lancaster. The come-from-behind win gives the JetHawks a victory in the first of four straight with the Mavs. Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth, Lancaster's Jay Garthwaite doubled to open the inning against Mavs reliever Aaron Dean. After Dean (5-5) issued a walk to Kyle Nichols, he got Edgar Varela to hit into a 6-4-3 double play. After another walk to Mike Thiessen, Dean allowed a two-out single to Dan Firlit, tying the game at 3-3. Mike DiRosa followed with a single giving the JetHawks a 4-3 lead. They added an important insurance run, as Danny Richar singled off of Danny Stout to make it 5-3. The Mavs fell short in the ninth, scoring once, but leaving the tying run on base. John Toner doubled with one out and scored on Charlie Lozada's two-out single, his first hit and RBI as a Maverick. JetHawks reliever Pete Sikaras then settled down and got Ralph Santana to ground out to end the game. Sikaras picked up his League-leading 17th save of the year by recording the final three outs. Mavs starter Dan Hall had his best outing in over a month, working five innings, while allowing just two runs on six hits. Hall left with the game tied at 2-2, turning it over to Dean. The team's exchanged runs in the first, as Froilan Villanueva collected his first of two RBI singles on the night. Lancaster countered wiith a sac fly from Jay Garthwaite, scoring Marland Williams to tie the game at 1-1. The JetHawks took the lead in the fifth at 2-1, as Marland Williams picked up his third hit of the night, and later scored on Garthwaite's two-out double. High Desert scored a run in the top of the sixth off JetHawks starter Mike Schultz to tie the game at 2-2, as Villanueva's run-scoring single scored Scott Candelaria from second base. After Dean worked a scoreless sixth, the Mavs took the lead at 3-2, as Santana's two-out double scored Lozada in the seventh. Billy Biggs (1-5) worked a scoreless eighth inning for his first win this year. The Mavs failed to win their second straight game for what would have been only the second time in the second half. With the loss, they now fall to 13-38 in the second half, and just 38-83 overall. The Mavs try to get back on track on Tuesday night as Danny Kolb (5-9) takes on Lancaster's John Castellanos (5-1). Game time from the Hangar is at 7:15 (9:15 Central). High Desert Box Score: The lack of power in this lineup is so obvious; this team just doesn't match its California League surroundings at all... 24. Final: Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 5, High Desert 4 Mavericks surrender three runs in the eighth to go down 5-3. Looking for their first ninth-inning comeback this year, Charlie Lozada singles in fellow newcomer John Toner to close the gap to 5-4. But Ralph Santana grounds out for the final out.
  25. In Progress: High Desert 3, Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 2, bottom of the 7th in Rancho Over 30 folks on the board as we post, so feel free to listen in to the final innings of this one. Ralph Santana drives in Charlie Lozada with the go-ahead run in the top of the 7th; the 18-year-old Lozada holding his own behind the plate tonight and has walked three times in four Maverick plate appearances over two games. Mike Lindskog in fine form tonight -- he admits allergy medicine has him a bit loopy this evening. Still getting the job done, though -- he did just make the very astute observation that Olive Garden's lunch portions are much smaller than their dinner entrees. Very true, Michael http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
