  2. From today's Journal Online: HUNTSVILLE (AA): The Stars (21-16) took game one of a doubleheader, beating Birmingham 5-1. Jeff Housman (3-0) went the distance for Huntsville. Game two was postponed by rain. Must have been a scrimmage last night, then.... Sometimes I wonder why Brian felt there was a need for Brewerfan, given the outstanding coverage elsewhere...
  3. Friday's Daily Menu : We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville and Beloit within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify with a second-place finish. Hopefully we'll begin to include the Arizona Brewers here as well soon (now 3-1 in the second half). 4. Arizona Brewer News: 2003 4th round OF Charlie Fermaint was placed on the disabled list with a shoulder injury. No official word on the severity of the injury, but we'd be surprised to see him in action during this final month of the regular Arizona Rookie League season. Catcher Simon Guhring is back from Europe, and has been activated from the Temporary Inactive list. The German native apparently couldn't lead his squad to the Olympics in Athens, as Germany did not qualify as one of the six teams for the final round of action in the European Championship. Italy won the competition, with the Netherlands finishing second.
  5. Daily Press High Desert Game Story: Full of quotes -- an example here of being able to stick with a struggling player when a playoff spot isn't on the line, and nice to see Ralph Santana backing up his teammate; that being said, even with a 12-man staff, these arms are pretty stretched out... www.vvdailypress.com/cgi-...888,88749,
  6. Darn near impossible to get game stories this week while the Snappers visit Peoria. There's little doubt that all the newspaper reporters throughout the Midwest League towns and in future minor league locales have two easy feature article targets in Prince Fielder and Tony Gwynn. I imagine they're asked to grant interview requests in each and every town they visit. Prince was yesterday, Tony today: Peoria Star Tony Gwynn Feature: pjstar.com/sports/chiefs/g180560a.html
  7. Arizona Box Score: Finally turned up... A couple of big offensive performances, as you can note below; 20-year-old RHP Hubert Pruett with a very strong effort -- he's listed at 6'1", 251 -- a RH Sid Fernandez (fellow Hawaiian) in the making? Adam Mannon has a nice .814 OPS, but has struck out 32 times in 100 AB's, including a 5-for-5 K effort here... 10. Inland Empire (Mariners) 6, High Desert 2 High Desert Site Game Summary: San Bernardino, CA ? The Inland Empire 66ers capitalized on seven walks in the first three innings, and defeated the High Desert Mavericks by a final score of 6-2 on Thursday night at Arrowhead Credit Union Park in San Bernardino. Mavs starter Tommy Marx (0-2) struggled with his control, allowing three runs in the first inning as Inland Empire took an early 3-0 lead. After allowing an RBI double to Shin-Soo Choo to make it 2-0, Marx loaded the bases and then forced in a run with a walk to Hunter Brown. The 66ers added a run in the second as Dustin DeLucchi doubled and scored from third on a wild pitch. In the third, Marx walked the first two men he faced before getting Brown to foul out. Danny Stout came on and after getting Chris Collins to foul out, gave up an RBI single to former Mav Cristian Guerrero, making it 5-0. Guerrero added his second of three hits on the night in the fifth, as he knocked in Jason Van Meetren with an RBI double to make it 6-0. The Mavs finally got something going against 66ers starter Glenn Bott in the seventh. Froilan Villanueva and Jeremy Frost opened up the inning with consecutive hits. Frost's double chased home Villanueva to make it 6-1. Frost later scored on an RBI double to left field by Ralph Santana to make it 6-2. After Joel Alvarado singled to put runners at first and third with one out, Bott (6-5) was replaced by Ryan Rowland-Smith. Ozzie Chavez promptly grounded into the inning-ending double play to end any chance at a come-back. Tony Stavros came out of the bullpen and worked two scoreless innings for High Desert to keep it close. In the ninth, Jared Thomas worked a 1-2-3 frame as Inland Empire held on for their third win in four games in the series. Santana, who started the game in right field, threw out two different base runners at home on the night. Santana threw out Jason Van Meetren trying to score from second to end the third inning. He later gunned down Dustin DeLucchi, trying to score on a fly ball by Shin-Soo Choo in the sixth. The loss is the fifth in the last six games for the Mavs, as they fall to 9-31 in the second half. They are now 42 games under .500 at 34-76 overall in 2003. High Desert opens a three-game set in Lancater on Friday night against the JetHawks. Dan Hall (6-9) throws against Keith Whatley (2-2) of the JetHawks. Game time from the Hangar is 7:15 (9:15 Central). 13. In Progress: Inland Empire (Mariners) 5, High Desert 0, after three innings The Tommy Marx rotation experiment needs to end quickly. Seven walks lead to an early shower and a big hole for the Mavs to dig out of. Snappers lefty Eric Henderson will be 24 in September. The 2000 4th round pick would welcome the Adelanto challenge, I'm sure.

  15. Indy Site Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis lefthanders Derek Lee and Shane Nance combined on a one-hit masterpiece on Thursday night as the Indians defeated the Durham Bulls 2-0 in the first of a four-game series at Victory Field. Lee, who allowed only one hit, struck out a season-high nine batters in 7.2 innings. Lee (1-2) retired the first 18 batters he faced, including eight by strikeout, as Durham went without a baserunner through the first six innings of the game. Leading off the top of the seventh inning, Durham centerfielder Jason Tyner lofted a soft liner to the gap in left-center that was chased after by both Tribe leftfielder Jim Rushford and centerfielder Jason Conti, but the ball landed safely on the grass for the only Durham hit of the night. Tyner attempted to stretch the base hit into a double, but was gunned down at second base by Conti who recorded his league-leading 15th outfield assist. Doug Waechter (1-2) took the loss for Durham despite allowing only five hits and one run over 7.0 innings. Waechter allowed a leadoff double to Conti in the bottom of the first before retiring the next 10 batters he faced. Rushford broke up Waechter's string with a double down the rightfield line with one out in the fourth inning, and scored one batter later on Mark Smith's double off the left-centerfield fence that gave the Tribe a 1-0 lead. Lee threw 102 pitches, lasting into the eighth inning, before he was relieved by Nance following a two-out hit batsman that represented only the third Durham baserunner of the evening. Nance retired the only four batters he faced to record his first save of the season and preserve the one-hit shutout. Steve Scarborough tallied his seventh home run of the season in the home half of the eighth inning off of Durham reliever Bobby Seay to give the Indians their second and final run of the evening. Tribe batters accounted for only seven hits in the game, as Conti and Rushford each finished 2-for-4, but the support proved to be more than adequate for Lee and Nance. The Indians (49-61) and Bulls (57-51) will continue the four-game series from Victory Field on Friday night when Pasqual Coco (8-6, 5.10) takes the mound for the Tribe against Durham's Delvin James (4-6, 4.25). 24. High Desert Site Game Summary: San Bernardino, CA ? Chris Saenz put together his second consecutive dominant performance on Wednesday night, as the High Desert Mavericks rallied and defeated the Inland Empire 66ers by a final of 3-1 at Arrowhead Credit Union Park in San Bernardino. Coming off seven shutout innings in his last start, a win in Rancho over the Quakes, Saenz (8-8) went pitch for pitch with 66ers starter Ryan Ketchner. Neither offense could get anything going, as each starter held the opponent scoreless through five full innings. It was Inland Empire which scored first, as Dustin DeLucchi doubled to open the sixth, and scored on a sac fly from Shin-Soo Choo to make it a 1-0 game. The Mavs got the equalizer in the next frame, as Daryl Clark doubled and scored on Froilan Villanueva's two-out RBI double. Tied at 1-1 in the eighth, the Mavs took the lead for good, as Chris Morris picked up a two-out RBI single that scored Ralph Santana for a 2-1 lead. Morris later scored from second on Clark's third hit of the night, an RBI single to right field off reliever Rich Dorman, giving the Mavs a 3-1 lead. Ketchner (11-5) allowed all three runs in 7.2 innings. Saenz finally gave way to newcomer Danny Stout, who worked a scoreless eighth inning. Mavs closer Bobby Bystrowski came on in the ninth and earned his first save since June 5th in Lancaster. Bystrowski allowed a two-out double to Blake Bone, but got Evel Bastida swinging to notch his 12th save of the year. With the win, High Desert ends a four-game losing streak and is now 2-4 on the current 10-game road trip. The Mavs improve to 9-30 in the second half and 34-75 overall. On Thursday night, the Mavs meet the 66ers for the final time this year. Tommy Marx (0-1) goes against Glenn Bott (5-5) of the 66ers. Game time from Arrowhead Credit Union Park is at 7:05 (9:05 Central). High Desert Box Score: Daryl Clark just owns Cal League pitchers; Ozzie Chavez only turns 20 today (Thursday), but you'd still have to file his 2003 performance as disappointing -- he'd have to be considered a near-lock to repeat high-A next year...
