In progress: Inland Empire (Mariners) 6, High Desert 1, after 3.5 innings in San Bernadino RHP Dan Kolb has been rocked for six runs and ten hits after three innings. Mike Lindskog deserves combat pay for the job he's had to do in the radio booth this year -- you can imagine as the only man on the broadcast, in a season such as High Desert's has been, what a chore he's had. That being said, Inland Empire blasts a fog horn for every run they score (think Chicago Blackhawk hockey games). It sounds as though it's literally coming from Lindskog's own booth, and Mike has rightfully deemed it the worst feature in all of minor league baseball. Well, for visitors anyway... -

Indianapolis 9, Durham (Devil Rays) 4 Tribe avoids a sweep... Indy Site Game Summary: DURHAM, NC -- The visiting Indianapolis Indians scored early and often in defeating the Durham Bulls 9-4 on Monday night to avoid a Durham sweep of the four-game series. The Indians (46-61) jumped all over Carlos Reyes, chasing the Durham starter from the ballgame in the top of the fifth inning. Jason Conti and Mark Smith each homered for Indianapolis, as all nine Indians hitters picked up at least one hit in the contest. Reyes (9-2), entered the game leading the International League with a miniscule 1.67 ERA, but was roughed up by the Tribe's offensive assault for 12 hits and seven runs over only 4.0-plus innings pitched. In the top of the fifth, Wilton Veras and Jim Rushford led off the inning with back-to-back singles off of Reyes moments before Smith smacked a two-strike pitch off the famous Bull sign in left-center field at Durham Bulls Athletic Park giving the Tribe a 6-3 lead. Following a walk, an error, and a single by Doug Jennings, the Tribe loaded the bases on Reyes with still nobody out in the fifth when reliever Talley Haines was brought into the game. Haines did his part in avoiding further damage by getting Steve Scarborough to hit into one of five Indians' double plays with a grounder toppled back to the pitcher. Haines then got Delgado to ground out to end the inning. The Indians opened the scoring with three runs in the second inning on an RBI double by Scarborough and a two-RBI single by Delgado. With the score at 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Durham rallied for two runs on a double by George Lombard that brought the Bulls to within one, but that was as close as the two teams would come. Following Smith's homer in the fifth, the Tribe scored two more in the sixth when Conti led off the inning with a solo home run and Veras scored on an RBI single by Cody McKay that gave the Tribe a 9-3 lead. Durham scored its final run on a Lombard triple in the sixth. David Manning picked up the win for the Tribe, improving to 6-7 on the season while snapping a personal three-game losing streak in the process. Manning pitched 7.0 innings scattering eight hits while giving up four runs, three earned, and striking out five. The Indians will return home to Victory Field to open an eight-game homestand on Tuesday night when the Richmond Braves come to town for a two-game series. Lefthander Luis Martinez (1-0, 0.00) will make his Victory Field debut on Tuesday when he is opposed by Richmond's Chris Fussell (7-10, 4.28). Indianapolis Box Score: Jason Conti's good for 10-15 HR's in each of his pro seasons; everyone contributes on offense; you know Cody Mckay is hot as he sees time at first base -- having the DH available helps... From the Indy Media Notes: SCARBOROUGH - NOT QUITE ENOUGH: For the second time this season, an Indians player has just fallen short of earning IL Batter of the Week honors. Steve Scarborough hit .423 (11-for-26) with four multi-hit games last week. He had four doubles, one triple and three home runs for a 1.000 slugging percentage. One of his homers was a walk-off grand slam against Columbus Monday night, while he added a three-run shot Thursday at Richmond. Scarborough scored five runs and drove in 10. Columbus' Fernando Seguignol won the award. He hit .452 with a .903 slugging percentage. He scored 12 runs and drove in seven in eight games. -

Beloit Game Summary from the Kane County Site: Another error by 2B Callix Crabbe proves devastating... Geneva, IL ? Derrell McCall (1-0) hurled eight strong innings on Sunday afternoon at Elfstrom Stadium, as the Cougars (20-17, 61-46) edged the Beloit Snappers (23-14, 55-49), 3-2 in front of 6,207. McCall, who made his first start (2nd appearance) since joining the Cougars on July 23 from Modesto, allowed just three hits on two unearned runs and fanned four. The victory for McCall was his first since May 9 when he beat Visalia. The right-hander from Cantonment, Florida, had six perfect innings and issued his only walk in the ninth inning. Today?s game featured a dramatic finish when the Beloit Snappers rallied for two runs in the ninth inning, but their valiant effort fell short. With two outs in the ninth inning, Tony Gwynn and Jeff Eure executed a double steal, with Gwynn taking third and Eure stealing second. On the play, catcher, Jason Basil misfired down to second base on an attempt to nab Eure, but Francis Gomez recovered and fired home to cut down Gwynn at the plate, ending the game. Chris Dunwell was the pitcher for the final out, and record his second save of the season. He entered the game after Leonard Landeros worked 2/3 of an inning in relief of McCall. Calvin Carpenter (1-3) suffered the loss for Beloit after giving up three unearned runs in the first inning. During the Cougars first at-bat, Nick Rogers led off with a single and Andre Ethier reached on an error by second baseman, Callix Crabbe. After Gomez and Brant Colamarino were retired, Nelson Cruz came through with an RBI single to right field. Brian Stavisky capped off the three-run inning, driving a two-run double to the gap in left-center field. Rogers and Ethier both finished with two hits apiece, Ethier has hit safely in 9 of 10 starts since joining Kane County. The Cougars and the Snappers wrap up their four-game series tomorrow night at Elfstrom Stadium; game time is 7:00 PM. LHP Drew Dickinson (8-10, 3.81) makes his 22nd start of the season for the Cougars; RHP Luis Pena (1-4, 3.32) will make the start for Beloit. Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 9, High Desert 2 High Desert Site Game Summary: Rancho Cucamonga, CA ? The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes used two big innings to defeat the High Desert Mavericks on Saturday night at the Epicenter by a final score of 9-2. Four runs in the first and five in the 7th were more than enough for Quakes starter Jake Woods (8-5). After allowing an RBI single to Froilan Villanueva in the first inning, Woods allowed just two base hits over the next five frames to get the win. Mavs starter Tommy Marx (0-1) got roughed up in the first inning, allowing four runs, as the Quakes took a four run lead. Marx would settle down and work three scoreless innings to keep the Mavs in it. Neither team would score again until the Quakes blew it open with five in the seventh. Mavs reliever Danny Stout allowed four runs while Jeff Hundley allowed another, as the Quakes went up 9-1. Beloit Game Summary (Kane County Site): Geneva, IL ? There were two words to describe tonight?s game ? crazy and unpredictable. The Cougars (19-17, 60-46) fought back all night but fell short, 13-12 to the Beloit Snappers (23-13, 55-48) in front of 14,008 (largest crowd of the season). When it was all said and done, Jon Huizinga (1-0) earned the win out of the Beloit bullpen and Manny Rodriguez (2-2) suffered the loss for the Cougars. Bo Hall avoided a lead off single by Brian Stavisky in the ninth inning, earning his ninth save of the season, striking out Kory Wayment to end the game. Both starters in tonight?s game didn?t make it past the fourth inning. Brigmer Leon allowed nine hits and seven runs (six earned) in just four innings pitched. Beloit starter Dennis Sarfate was tagged for eight hits and eight runs in 3 2/3 innings. Wayment paced the Cougars offense, extending his hitting streak to seven games, going 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Francis Gomez (2-for-4) delivered a two-run single in the eighth inning, cutting the Beloit lead to 13-11. Brant Colamarino picked up his 64th RBI on ground out, plating home the Cougars 12th run. Stavisky (2-for-5) had two hits, including his second home run of the season. Beloit sent nine men to the plate in the first inning, taking a 4-0 lead against Leon. During the opening frame, Marcus McBeth injured his right index finger, diving for a fly ball off the bat of Tony Gwynn. McBeth left the game, but his replacement, Nick Rogers (1-for-3) blasted a two-run homer in the second inning. The Snappers sent 10 men to the plate in the fifth inning to produce four runs. The Cougars scored four times in the fourth inning, sending nine men to the plate. The Cougars trailed 4-0, 5-1, 7-4, 11-8, 13-8, but their rally fell just short. The Cougars and the Snappers play game three of their series on Sunday afternoon at Elfstrom Stadium; game time is 2:00 PM. RHP Derrell McCall (0-0, 0.00) makes his 1st start of the season for the Cougars; RHP Calvin Carpenter (1-2, 4.62) will make the start for Beloit. Indy Site Game Summary: Yuck... DURHAM, N.C. -- Things went from bad to worse for the Indianapolis Indians Saturday night. After the host Durham Bulls scored two runs on four sharply hit balls in the first inning, Tribe starter Nate Teut was forced to leave the game due to an injury. The Bulls continued their hit parade against four more Tribe hurlers as they went on to a 16-4 win. The Bulls (55-48), who are in first place in the International League South, battered reliever Derek Lee for seven runs in the third inning and Roberto Giron for five runs in the fifth in handing the Tribe its worst setback since a loss 12-0 at Durham on July 27 of last year. All eight of the Bulls who hit safely in the game connected on doubles with Ryan Jackson collecting a pair of two-baggers. The nine doubles by Durham is the most given up by the Indians during the Victory Field Era. Jackson smashed both of his doubles in the third inning when the Bulls sent 11 men to the plate. Durham's designated hitter led off with a double down the right field line. He scored when Jeff Liefer singled. After three more runs had crossed the plate, Jackson came to bat for the second time in the inning with the bases loaded. He cleared the bases with a drive into the gap in left-center to cap the seven-run outburst and give the Bulls a 9-1 lead. To their credit, the Indians (45-60) came right back with a big inning of their own. Mark Smith led off the top of the fourth with his 10th homer of the year. After Cody McKay walked, Steve Scarborough hit his sixth long ball of the year, and third of the week, to cut the deficit to 9-4. Critical baserunning blunders, which have plagued the Indians all season, cost them potentially more runs in the fourth. Alex Delgado and Jason Conti followed Scarborough's home run with singles, but Delgado overran third and was thrown out to end the rally. Durham put the game completely out of reach with five more runs in the fifth. Jared Sandberg, who finished the night with five RBI, drove in three with his 12th home run of the year. Durham's 16 runs and 19 hits were both the most given up by the Indians this season. Scarborough, who finished two-for-four with three RBI, continued his bid to become the first Indian to win IL Batter of the Week honors this season. The Tribe shortstop has batted .455 since Monday with three doubles, three home runs and 10 RBI. Doug Waechter (1-1) earned his first Triple-A win for Durham. He allowed four runs in five innings. Cedrick Bowers pitched four innings of shutout relief to earn his second save. Teut (2-4) took the loss. The Indians, who have lost seven straight games at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, will look for their first win there since June 26, 2002 when the series continues Sunday. David Manning (5-7, 4.70) will oppose Carlos Reyes (9-1, 1.67) -

Durham's Pete LaForest, who had the game-winning extra-inning HR against Indy last night, on Tribe LH starter Doug Davis: LaForest was complimentary of the starter's efforts. "He was good," LaForest said. "He mixed up all his stuff, and his changeup was unbelievable. When he mixes it in with that fastball that comes in at 93 or 95, he really messes people up." -
