David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update: COMING AND GOING"The only thing consistent about our play is our inconsistency."....... That's been the legitimate gripe of manager Frank Kremblas, quoted recently in the local newspaper...... Truer words were never spoken as applied to tonight's game. Nobody who saw Tuesday night's game, or the double-header on Sunday, could say they saw the same effort tonight........ There were some exceptions, as always. Ryan Miller threw two scoreless innings and struck out three. Corey Hart was 3-for-5, and tried to spark rallies with each hit. Noochie Varner and Alejandro Machado were super-sharp defensively, but, well, let's look a little closer and see how we could lose by a run and leave 10 runners on base. Trailing 2-0 in the 2nd inning, Corey led off with a double that bounced off the warning track in left-center. Brandon Gemoll moved him over with a ground ball to the left side, but Caonabo Cosme made one of two eye-opening line-drive grabs to retire Varner. The other one in the 8th was a doozie...... And Daryl Clark struck out on a 1-2 pitch from starter Rhett Parrott....... This was D.J.'s last game with Huntsville for awhile. He's going back down to High Desert. There were a number of moves tonight and I'll go over them, Stars fans. Mike Kremblas led off the third with a single that took a high hop off the mound, vaulted behind Parrott's back, and up the middle for a single. Ben Hendrickson sacrificed him to second and Kremblas went to third on a two-out wild pitch, but Dave Krynzel struck out swinging on a 2-2 pitch to end the inning. The Stars scored their first run in the 5th with two out. Ryan Gripp followed a two-out bunt single by Mike Kremblas with a pinch-hit double into the right field corner, his fifth consecutive pinch-hit, but Krynzel grounded to short to end the inning....... Gripper's last five pinch-hits have been a double, home run, and three singles, from which four RBIs have sprung......... Gripp started the season 0-for-13 off the bench, but he's gone a ridiculous 6-for-12 with six RBI since........ Don't know if this is a club record, but it wouldn't surprise me at all. The Stars had their biggest opportunity in the 6th....... After J.J. Hardy swung at an 0-2 pitch that was far too outside, Hart singled to left. Rhett Parrott, who retired 12 of the first 14 hitters and was cruising up to this point, sandwiched walks to Gemoll and Clark, but in the most pivotal moment for the Stars, Kremblas struck out on a 1-2 breaking ball, to leave the bases loaded........ J.J. is in another slump --- 0-for-11 with 3 Ks --- and his average has slipped under .300 again. The Stars left runners on first in the 7th and 8th innings. Caonobe Cosme robbed Corey of a four-hit night with a spectacular leaping catch of a liner on the edge of the grass. Cosme stretched every bone of his 6'2" 200-lb. body outward and came down as if he had shot up on a trampoline. It was the best catch of a line drive I have ever seen and that's not a cheap superlative from me. Down 5-1 with one out in the bottom of the 9th, the Stars' last rally fell short........ The Smokies' league-leading closer Mike Lyons, with 26 saves and near-perfect in four innings against the Stars this season, gave up back-to-back walks to Kade Johnson and Machado. Krynzel then ripped Lyons' 1-0 pitch past Bucky Jacobsen into the right field corner. Kade scored easily and Machado was held at third, but Krynzel with third base in mind, retreated midway in the basepath........ Dead duck? Almost. Jacobsen received the cut-off throw from right fielder Kevan Burns, but his throw to second sailed into left field. Machado scored and Krynzel went all the way around to score, making it a one-run game....... With the bases empty and two out now, after J.J. grounded out to third, Hart kept the inning alive with a bloop hit into left-center, but Gemoll struck out to end the game...... Brandon lingered awhile to jaw with umpire R.J. Thompson over a called strike two, but Thompson's day was done, leaving Brandon to stew at the plate. Right-hander Rhett Parrott beat the Stars for the 2nd time in three outings, allowing only three runs in 19 1/3 innings....... John Novinsky picked up his first save by fanning Gemoll......... The Stars quest of a record string of scoreless innings ended in the 2nd inning at 28 1/3 --- 2 1/3 innings shy of the record set late in the 2000 season --- when a one-out ground ball to Hardy scored Jacobsen, who led off with a single and went to third on a double by Scott Krause...... Until Cosme's catch in the 8th, the play-of-the-night belonged to Noochie Varner. Racing to his right in the 1st inning, he made a diving catch in the gap of John Nelson's sinking liner, then got up and fired to first to double up Skip Schumaker for a double play........ Corey Hart in the 5th --- I think he's gotten this position down --- backhanded a sharp two-hop grounder off the bat of former Star Krause near the third base line, and from there made a strong throw, from not as deep as the night before, to get the out at first to end the inning, with runners on 1st and 2nd. The Stars will have a new look tomorrow when they send Matt Parker (6-4, 2.81) to the mound in a spot start against Smokies' left Chris Narveson (2-0, 2.33). Narveson, a 2nd round pick by the Cardinals in 2000, was Dan Haren's replacement in the recent Futures Game....... Parker is making his 4th start of the season and his first since an abominable June 23 outing in which he gave up 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings against Carolina. Luis Martinez (8-5, 2.58) was scheduled to start, but he left Huntsville at 6:30 Wednesday evening for Richmond, where he joins the Indianapolis Indians, who will either go with he or Wes Obermueller Thursday night. He leaves as the Southern League's current strikeout leader and 5th among ERA leaders...... Richard Paz is also joining Indianapolis, but he was still in uniform tonight for the Stars. He was informed during pre-game drills of his promotion. Despite the fact he's been on a 1-for-21 slump at the plate, he still had a .406 on-base pct., but he's been relegated to being Machado's understudy since July 11......... The trade winds whirled tonight as High Desert will get back Daryl Clark, who arrived in Huntsville last May 10. Clark is 1-for-16 in his last 6 games and is hitting .244 with 3 HRs and 14 RBI........ The Mavs, who just lost Jason Belcher with a wrist injury and Joel Alvarado in Tuesday night's collision at the plate, will lose two more players and they are both headed to the Stars.......... First is Brad Nelson, who will arrive in Huntsville, Thursday, and possibly start........ Where is a good question if you'll read on......... Brad was out of action from April 12-June 14 with a hand injury that's cut his power down, but he's hitting .315 after 40 games. Brad is the Brewers' #1 minor league prospect according to Baseball America........ Joining the Stars' rotation will be David Nolasco. Right-hander Nolasco, according to Maverick's radio voice Mike Lindskog, has been the Mavs' most consistent pitcher. He struck out 63 and walked 28 in 81 innings and was 3-5 with a 5.44 ERA. Sounds consistently bad, but you have to understand that in a hitter's league, Mavericks Stadium is the least pitcher-friendly stadium........ That leaves this puzzle to figure out. With only two outfielders now --- Krynzel and Varner, who do you put in left? Nelson is a natural 1st baseman and has played only 10 games at LF for High Desert this season. But Brandon Gemoll has played there all season. Do you move Brandon to left? He's played out there in his minor league career....... Or scenario #3 which makes more sense. Indianapolis sends back Ryan Knox, who despite a 3-for-5 day tonight against Richmond, has hit only around .200 (now .226) and been playing every other day........ I think we'll know sooner than later. Looking ahead, the zero twins, Jeff Housman and Jason Shelley, will start Friday and Saturday respectively........ Unfortunately, I won't get to see them and you won't get to see any change on my site for a week, for I will be off on a week's vacation to my home state of New Jersey....... Even though I don't leave until Friday afternoon, I'm taking the day off from this site tomorrow to get some rest and pack my bags....... Till then, it will be your job to root the boys on for me. Keep the faith. I'll be back in a week ------ David Weiser. Thanks as always, David -- have a great trip to the Garden State! -- MassBrew -

San Jose (Giants) 7, High Desert 4 Win streak ends at two; Brad Nelson with a two-run single in the 9th in his final Maverick at-bat; Scott Candelaria then came to the plate representing the tying run, but struck out to end it... High Desert Site Game Summary: ADELANTO, CA ? The San Jose Giants ended the High Desert Mavericks two-game winning streak with a 7-4 victory over the Mavs on Wednesday night at Mavericks Stadium. The win for San Jose ends their own three-game losing streak overall, and gives them four wins in six tries against the Mavs this year. Trailing 1-0, the Giants picked up four runs in the fourth innings off Mavs starter Danny Kolb. Keith Anderson singled in the go-ahead run to make it 2-1. Derin McMains collected a two-out, two-run single to increase the Giants? lead to 4-1. They added another run off of Kolb (3-8) in the fifth as Justin Knoedler?s ground ball scored Daniel Ortmeier to make it 5-1. The Giants got two in the seventh off Mavs reliever Justin Gordon, as Anderson knocked in two runs with a two-out single to up the lead to 7-1. The Mavs rallied for a run in the seventh, as Ozzie Chavez? RBI single picked up Ralph Santana to make it 7-2. In the ninth, Giants reliever Wes Hutchison struggled with his control, walking the first two men he faced. David Aardsma was summoned out of the bullpen to record the final three outs. Brad Nelson?s two-out single plated two runs as the Mavs pulled to within three at 7-4. But with the tying runs on base, Aardsma struck out Scott Candelaria for the game?s final out. Brian Foster hit his team-leading 14th homer of the year, giving the Mavs a 1-0 lead in the third off San Jose starter Brion Treadway (8-4). Treadway allowed just the one run on three hits in six innings, in collecting the win. One day after losing Jason Belcher for the year with a broken left wrist, the Milwaukee Brewers promoted two Mavericks to AA Huntsville of the Southern League. First baseman/left fielder Brad Nelson and starting pitcher David Nolasco will both join the first-half Southern League West Division Champion Huntsville Stars. In return, the Mavs will receive outfielder Daryl Clark, who earned a promotion to AA earlier in the year, after starting the season with the Mavs. The Mavs are home on Thursday to finish their series with San Jose. Chad Petty (0-6) will go to the hill for the Mavs, while San Jose will counter with Chris Begg (1-0). Game time is at 7:05 (9:05 Central). The Mavs will then hit the road for ten straight games and return to Mavericks Stadium on Monday, August 4th. High Desert Box Score: We still say Tony Stavros is a quality reliever -- a couple of horrid outings have tainted his overall mark; despite a productive night, Ralph Santana is certainly not your prototypical right fielder in Jason Belcher's absence... Here's your latest: 20-year-old 1B / LF Brad Nelson is on his way to Huntsville from High Desert. Joining him from Adelanto is 24-year-old RHP David Nolasco. Heading back to High Desert from Huntsville is 23-year-old Daryl Clark and his .931 OPS overall (.735 OPS in 153 Huntsville AB's). Nolasco's move makes sense, especially if Luis Martinez is on his way to Indy. The Nelson / Clark swap seems unnecessary, but you'll see confirmation of the swap Thursday AM. Hopefully D.J. swallows his pride and returns to mashing in the desert -- that's a tough blow for him. -

Indy Site Game Summary: RICHMOND, VA -- The visiting Indianapolis Indians dropped the first game of a six-day road trip Wednesday night, losing 8-4 to Richmond as the Braves pounded out 15 hits in the game. The Tribe's David Manning lost his third straight start, while the Indians have now lost six of the team's last seven road games. Wilson Betemit led a Richmond offense that scored early and often on Wednesday night, as Betemit reached base four times on two walks, an RBI single in the first, and a two-RBI triple in the bottom of the third inning that put the Braves up 4-1. Betemit finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. Manning (5-7) pitched 6.0 innings allowing 10 hits and five runs while issuing three walks. Richmond (49-56) jumped on Manning right from the start, touching him for two runs in the bottom of the first inning after leadoff man Donzell McDonald doubled to open the inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Adam LaRoche. Betemit made the score 2-0 when he singled home Jesse Garcia three batters later. After Jim Rushford drove home Ryan Knox with the first Indians run of the game in the top of the third, Richmond came right back with two in the bottom of the inning on Betemit's one-out triple scoring LaRoche and Johnny Estrada. Richmond picked up another run in the fifth when Manning then threw a wild pitch with two outs and Betemit on third base giving the Braves took a 5-1 lead. The Indians (44-58) came back with two runs in the top of the sixth inning on a two-run homer by Cody McKay that brought score to within 5-3, but the Braves scored single runs in the bottom of the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings off of Manning and Tribe reliever Derek Lee to put the game away. Jason Marquis started and earned the win for Richmond pitching into the eighth inning allowing eight hits and four runs. Marquis (8-4) walked Rushford and allowed a single to Doug Jennings to open the eighth inning before being lifted in favor of Wil Cunnane with two on and no outs. After a McKay flyout and a single by Keith Luuloa loaded the bases, Pete Zoccolillo brought home Rushford on a sacrifice fly. Cunnane then struck out Steve Scarborough to end the inning, and set down the Tribe in order in the ninth to pick up his second save of the season. The Indians will conclude the short two-game series at Richmond on Thursday night before traveling to Durham for a four-game series with the Bulls. The Tribe then returns home to Victory Field on Tuesday, July 29 when Richmond travels to Indianapolis for a two-game series. David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update: STARS TIE RECORD... ANOTHER LOOMSThe Stars were happy to have Monday off. They are 2-11 on Mondays this year, but it looked at first as if they would have another day off........ The skies at 8:30 this morning looked more like 8:30 in the evening. Then came the rain and it never seemed to stop. On days like this, of course you think --- rainout --- but it stopped at noon. At least, the deluge stopped. There was still intermittent rain up to 4 pm........ I figured I'd see Homer (the team mascot, a polecat - MassBrew) feeding ducks in the outfield this evening, but the field drained remarkably well and at game time, which got off at 7:07 pm, the skies were clearing in the western sky. It was a cool 78°, and you knew everything would be all right. It was more than that....... Fresh off two impressive shutout victories in a Sunday double-header by a pair of pitchers making their Double-A debut, Pedro Liriano made it a three-peat --- a club-record. Liriano looked good right from the top. The Smokies, leading the Eastern Division with a record of 20-9, could not get a ball in the air until Dan Moylan skied one to center for the first out of the 3rd inning...... Before the inning ended, he had 5 strikeouts, in just 2 2/3 innings........ The Smokies didn't get their first hit until the 4th, when shortstop John Nelson snapped an 0-for-9 slump with a double down the left field line that Daryl Clark chased into foul territory......... Papo Bolivar's one-hop single to center moved Nelson to third, but that's about as far as the Smokies got........ Pedro went 3-and-2 to former Star Bucky Jacobsen, before he got a piece of the ball and nubbed it in front of the mound on the first base side. Liriano came off quickly, fielded the ball, spun and fired a little high, but on target, to Kade Johnson who stepped on the plate and made a dead duck out of Nelson....... With Bucky on first and Bolivar on third, pinch-hitter Chris Weekly hit into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning........ Pedro loaded the bases with two out in the 5th inning, thanks to a pair of walks, but he struck out Nelson on a 2-2 slider to end another jam........ Liriano needed no more than 19 pitches to finish any of the first four innings. He was throwing darts........ Pedro struck out Scott Krause to get his personal-best 8th strikeout in the 6th, ending his night after 92 pitches, 53 for strikes (57.6%). Matt Childers finished up with three scoreless innings, stretching his scoreless string to 14 1/3 innings and lowering his ERA from 3.83 where the streak started, to 3.03. Earlier this season, Matt Parker had a string of 19 2/3 innings without giving up an earned run, but of even bigger magnitude is the string the whole staff has been working on....... Liriano and Childers stretched it to 27 1/3 innings after tonight, and Wednesday we'll see if the Stars can break the club record of 30 2/3 consecutive shutout innings, which was set in the tail end of the 2000 season. The Stars offense was both efficient and explosive, featuring a run from second base on a double play ball........ Corey Hart led off the 2nd inning with a single up the middle and stole 2nd on the first pitch to Brandon Gemoll. Gemoll, then, hit a two-hop single to shallow right moving Hart to third. With one out, Clark hit a fly ball deep to left field to score Hart and make it 1-0........ With one out in the 5th, Corey doubled to right-center. After a walk to Gemoll, Noochie Varner bounced one to short, an easy double play, but Varner, with his speed, beat out the relay throw from Caonabo Cosme...... Corey never stopped. Jacobsen saw him bearing down on catcher Dan Moylan and alertly threw the ball home, but Hart avoided his tag with a hook slide, slapping the plate with his hand. This play brought to you by Frankieball ........ Only a crazy genius like Frank Kremblas would also orchestrate this one: a double steal in the 5th inning with the pitcher, Liriano, on second and Dave Krynzel on first. It set up a two-run, two-out single to right center by Hart, his 99th hit of the season....... Pedro became the first Huntsville pitcher to steal a base since Dave Pember on July 13 of last year. He had a stolen base taken away earlier this season on the road because the official scorer wouldn't accept the fact that Frank will put on the double steal with anybody on base, so the play was recorded as a fielder's choice instead. Don't know what date that was. I don't want to skip this. It's worth talking about........The 5th inning opened with a huge blast by Kade Johnson that hit the top of the left-center field scoreboard some 45 feet in the air and 420 feet away, rattling off the Pepsi sign on the right side........ That top half of the scoreboard where there used to be a functioning "diamond vision" was added in 1995. Kade came within three feet of becoming the 3rd Huntsville Star to launch a HR over it. T.R. Marcinczyk (A's organization) did it in 1998 and I'm told that it was done one other time during the Milwaukee era, but I don't know who........ Had Kade hit this before 1994, it would have easily gone 475 feet or more. The Stars ended Nick Stocks' four-game win streak....... Liriano won his first game since June 14, and had a 6.37 ERA in five starts until tonight........ Pitching coach Stan Kyles has been working with Liriano. He has this Marichal-like leg kick, not as pronounced, and is very slow delivering to the plate. As a result, you can imagine how eager runners are to steal on him, so Kyles has been working on his release and pickoff move......... Kyles, standing on the top step of the left side of the dugout in the 2nd inning made the play of the day, plucking out of the air a liner off the bat of Corey Erickson that was headed for the seats. He got a round of applause for that. Pedro is about as bad a hitter as Luis Martinez when you just look at his average. Pedro is 2-for-27 and Luis is 1-for-25, but Pedro takes his hacks and can drive the ball, whereas Luis flails and pokes and never gets the ball out of the infield........ There's something to be said for BP, Luis. Pedro hit a liner to right in the 3rd inning and singled up the middle in the 5th, which set up that double-steal. Krynzel hit his first triple since May 27 in the 7th inning, his 8th of the year, breaking a three-way tie for the SL lead with Carolina's Chip Ambres and the Diamond Jaxx' Brendan Harris....... His triple to the right field corner scored Alejandro Machado with the Stars' final run......... Krynzel also stole his league-leading 34th base, tying him for 11th on the Stars' all-time list. Bill Hall, who appeared in 19 games for the Milwaukee Brewers last year and hit .194, returned to the major leagues Tuesday night, and went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple, and 2 RBI to help them in a 6-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. Ben Hendrickson (4-2, 2.54) will be on the mound Wednesday night as he tries to extend the Stars' shutout streak. The Smokies will send out Rhett Parrott (7-9, 3.36), rated by Baseball America as the #8 prospect in the Cardinal organization....... The Smokies are now 9-9 following a record 9-game win streak since the club moved to Sevierville. The High Desert Mavericks, Huntsville's frequent feeder at the Class A level, won their 2nd straight game tonight, 10-4, over San Jose...... For us that's no big deal, but the Mavs haven't done that since May 15-16, but they may have lost two key players........ One was Joel Alvarado, who started the season with the Stars. He injured a knee on a play at the plate and was helped off the field by teammates....... Jason Belcher, the team?s leading hitter and run-producer left the game with what was later confirmed to be a broken left wrist. Belcher, who has a good shot of being part of the 2004 Stars, injured the wrist on a diving attempt on a shallow pop-up hit to right field in the first inning. He will miss the remainder of the 2003 season. -

Thanks for all the updates, everyone! Keep it up nightly! By the looks of the scoreboard, this trusty "Link Reporter" should catch up on his sleep more often! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Indianapolis 5, Columbus (Yankees) 4 Indy Site Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- Pete Zoccolillo drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday night to drive in Jim Rushford with the winning run as the Indianapolis Indians defeated the Columbus Clippers 5-4. The Tribe win completes a two-game sweep of the Clippers with both games going down to the bottom of the ninth inning to determine the outcome. On Monday, Steve Scarborough capped a five-run ninth with a walk-off grand slam. The Indians (44-57) had leads of 2-0, 3-2, and 4-3, before heading into the ninth knotted at four. Columbus reliever Mike Thurman, who threw a perfect inning of relief in the eighth, remained in the game to open the bottom of the ninth by retiring Wilton Veras on a liner right at the centerfielder. With one out, Rushford and Mark Smith hit back-to-back singles through the middle to put runners on first and second for Cody McKay. Lefthander Tim Adkins, brought on to face McKay, induced a groundball to first baseman Nate Rolison. As he attempted to start the double play, Rolison's throw pulled shortstop Erick Almonte off the bag allowing Smith to slide safely into second base while McKay was out at first on the return throw from Almonte. Righthanded batting Keith Luuloa was then given an intentional pass loading the bases for the lefty Zoccolillo, who watched the first three pitches miss the plate before coaxing a walk on Adkins' 3-1 offering. The walk forced home Rushford from third with the winning run while pinning Thurman (4-6) with the loss. Tribe reliever Ben Ford earned the win pitching out of a one-out, two-on jam in the top of the ninth by getting Craig Wilson to ground into a double play. Ford (3-3) relieved John Foster with runners on first and second. The Tribe jumped on the board first in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Smith and a sacrifice fly by McKay scoring Rushford. Columbus (48-55) came back with two in the third off Indians starter Pasqual Coco on a two-run double by Almonte. Coco pitched seven innings for Indianapolis allowing eight hits and three runs while not factoring in the decision. The Indians took leads in both the fourth and seventh innings with single runs in both frames. Ryan Knox stole second base with two outs in the fourth before scoring moments later on a double by Veras. In the sixth, Scarborough tripled leading off the inning and scored on an RBI single by Knox. The Indians begin a two-game series at Richmond on Wednesday evening when David Manning (5-6, 4.39) faces Jason Marquis (7-4, 3.21). Indy's Media Notes for Tuesday are out -- here's the only new subject of note compared to Monday: ON THE MOUND: Righthander Pasqual Coco makes his team-leading 20th start. Coco is the only pitcher to have been a member of the Tribe starting rotation all season. He leads the team with eight wins, 99.1 innings and 73 strikeouts. Coco has faced Columbus twice this season without much success. He is 0-2 against the Clippers having allowed nine earned runs in 8.0 innings. His last start against Columbus came on July 3 when he lasted only three innings and gave up seven runs. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for Coco that had spanned 12 starts from May 4 through June 28. Coco's most-recent start came on July 9 against Norfolk. He worked a season-high eight innings and gave up just one run on five hits and one walk. He fanned six. -

Posted earlier this week: 2003 32nd round pick Bill Lewis, a middle infielder out of TCU, only appeared in one game with Helena early on. Helena staff could only confirm that he is injured at this time, but had no update for us on the nature or severity of the injury, or whether Lewis was officially placed on their DL. We'll see if we can follow-up with the big league Brewers. Ask and we shall receive: Lewis' shoulder has been bothering him. He has been working on strengthening it the past few weeks and should be back shortly. He has been officially on the DL since 6/21. Update: Will Lewis was activated from the disabled list today, and has been transferred from Helena to Arizona. -

A brief update on the 2003 4th rounder, 17-year-old Puerto Rico product CF Charlie Fermaint down in Maryvale, who had gotten off to such a nice start: A sore shoulder. We don't know the extent of the injury at this time. We did try to pursue injury updates with the Brewer front office on several of the Brewer farmhands, but just like many of you may have learned in your own workplaces, new laws regarding injuries and patient confidentiality of medical records/injuries does not allow the Brewers to provide us with anything but the most basic of updates.
