  1. Arizona Rangers 9, Arizona Brewers 7 OK, we're a bit concerned -- 2003 4th round OF Charlie Fermaint not in Saturday's lineup after being lifted after his stolen base on Friday -- we'll wait another box score or two before contacting the Brewers; RF Adam Mannon with his second HR of the season -- the team has five HR's after 22 games, not unusual for this league; Mannon leads the team in RBI with 18, eight more than Gilberto Acosta, who is second on the squad; here's hoping that 20-year-old Dominican RHP Wington Flandes makes it to Milwaukee some day, only because we like saying "Wington"... 4. Until we see a box score, not sure if the official scorer ruled Lou Palmisano's game-ending hard-hit ground ball an error or base hit; the Billings announcer seemed to indicate it would be ruled a hit, but this game story indicates otherwise. Either way, Cap'n Lou did hit safely earlier in the game. Isn't it ironic though that: Palmisano's 22-game hitting streak is the second longest in the Pioneer League this season. Ricardo Nanita extended his hitting streak to 29 games against Missoula Saturday afternoon. Nanita's mark is a Pioneer League record. 27 had been the longest streak of all-time in the Pioneer League (league established in 1939). Palmisano challenges, only to see it extended elsewhere... 5. Final: Inland Empire (Mariners) 8, High Desert 5 High Desert Site Game Summary: ADELANTO, CA ? John Castellano?s two-out, three-run double in the eighth inning lifted the Inland Empire 66ers to an 8-5 come-from-behind win over the High Desert Mavericks on Saturday night at Mavericks Stadium. Over 4,000 fans watched an exciting game that saw several lead changes, as the Mavs failed to win their second straight game. The last time High Desert achieved that accomplishment was over two months ago. Leading 5-4, Jeff Hundley was summoned on to replace Justin Backsmeyer (1-7) to hold the fort with the bases loaded in the eighth. With two outs, Castellano ripped a double down the left field line bringing in three runs as the 66ers took a 7-5 lead. They added a run off Bobby Bystrowski in the ninth to make it 8-5. The Mavs threatened in the ninth off 66ers reliever Rich Dorman (2-0), as Froilan Villanueva walked before Brad Nelson singled. After Scott Candelaria reached on a fielder?s choice, Jason Belcher grounded into the game-ending 4-6-3 double play. Emiliano Fruto earned the final three outs for his second save of the year for the 66ers. The 66ers took the lead off Mavs starter Chad Petty in the second on Hunter Brown?s 13th homer of the year. Petty had one of his best starts for the Mavs, but left in the seventh after running into trouble. After a Belcher ground ball scored Nelson in the sixth, the 66ers broke the 1-1 tie with three against Petty in the seventh. The Mavs responded in the bottom of the inning with four runs to take a 5-4 lead, as Chris Morris, Villanueva, Nelson and Candelaria all picked up RBIs. High Desert is now 5-22 in the second half and just 30-68 overall this year. The Mavs and 66ers meet for the final time at Mavericks Stadium this year with the series finale on Sunday. Chris Saenz (6-7) goes for the Mavs, while Glenn Bott (3-5) takes the ball for the 66ers. Game time on Sunday is 5:05 (7:05 Central). 11. In progress: Inland Empire (Mariners) 1, High Desert 0, after 5.5 innings In front of a full house on Fireworks Night in Adelanto, the Mavs need a win desperately so that they may claim back-to-back wins for the first time since May. Chad Petty is dealing for the second consecutive start (four hits through 6 IP), but is letting his defense (four double plays thus far!) do the work for him, rather than the high strikeout count he managed last time out. Inland Empire's Ryan Ketchner, the deaf pitcher we've provided feature article links to here at Brewerfan in the past, has baffled the Mavericks all season, and is doing so again tonight. Hopefully the boys can get Petty his first High Desert win. 13. Indy Site Game Summary: ROCHESTER, NY -- Following an early power surge, the visiting Indianapolis Indians could not maintain a four-run lead, dropping a 5-4 contest to the Rochester Red Wings on Saturday evening. The Tribe slugged three homers in the first two innings, but the Red Wings tallied two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to complete the come from behind victory. Designated hitter Todd Sears drove home three runs and second baseman Luis Rodriguez scored three for Rochester, as the pair combined to go 5-for-6 in the game. Sears drove home Rodriguez and Michael Restovich with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning, and plated Rodriguez with the tying run in the bottom of the eighth with another RBI single in finishing the day 3-for-4 with three RBI. Red Wings starter Matt Carnes served up a two-run home run in the top of the first inning to Doug Jennings, and back-to-back solo shots to Pete Zoccolillo and Alex Delgado leading off the top of the second inning, as the Indians took a 4-0 lead in what had the makings of a successful offensive night for the Tribe. After the Delgado homer and a visit to the mound from Rochester pitching coach Bobby Cuellar, Carnes battled back by retiring 14 of the next 16 Indians he faced before leaving the game trailing 4-2 following the sixth inning. The only base hit Carnes allowed after the second inning came on Bill Hall's one-out single in the top of the fifth inning. The single extended Hall's season-high hitting streak to 12 games. Wes Obermueller, making his third start of the season for the Tribe, allowed the Red Wings to inch closer at 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Shane Andrews brought home Rodriguez on a groundout to short. Following a perfect seventh inning, Obermueller (0-2) returned to the mound to open the bottom of the eighth as the Indians still clung to a 4-3 lead. Following a groundout to open the frame, the Red Wings put together three consecutive singles to tie the score and chase Obermueller from the game. Ben Ford, who entered with Restovich on second and Sears on first, struck out Andrews for the second out of the inning. Red Wings leftfielder Mike Ryan then laced a single to right field off of Ford which brought home Restovich with the go-ahead run moments before Sears was thrown out attempting to advance to third for the final out of the inning. Grant Balfour, who entered the game in relief of Carnes to open the seventh inning, retired all nine batters he faced in earning the win for Rochester (47-52). Balfour (3-0) struck out four Indians batters in 3.0 innings. The Indians (42-56) will look to gather a split of the four-game series on Sunday afternoon when lefty Doug Davis makes his Tribe debut against Rochester's Brad Thomas (0-1, 1.13). 14. THREAD EDIT: We've deleted a couple of posts from earlier Saturday which added to some confusion about Jason Shelley's baseball past. There was another Jason Shelley that played pro baseball in the early 90's who since has gone on to see Arena Football League and NFL Europe action as a WR. STATS, Inc. had mistakenly combined the Huntsville Stars' new pitcher's stat line with this now-football player's numbers, adding to the confusion. Simply put, the new Brewer farmhand was indeed drafted by Toronto in '98, didn't sign and began a successful independent league pro career in 2001. He turned 26 last March.

  16. Everybody's in Beloit -- shortest game thread ever. Nice job by Yost not over-managing and letting Kolb go the final two innings. Congratulations, Ben, you've earned a nice arbitraton-eligible bump for 2004. 25 years old yesterday -- I'm continually mystified to think that some wish to trade you. You'll be "in the prime" of 27-28 in 2005-2006, and not eligible for free agency until after 2006. We'll enjoy your stay -- thank you very much.

  20. David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update: THIS ISN'T WORKINGMike Adams has been moved back to the bullpen to resume his closer's role, which is where he belongs. Nothing against Mike. He's been great there. But this "experiment" if you want to call it that, isn't working. With the exception of Derek Lee, who is not truly a bullpen pitcher, I isolated the four relief pitchers who have been called upon to start this season for the Stars. Matt Parker is the only one who didn't start any games in July, so getting him out of the way, Matt was 2-1 with a 3.95 ERA in three starts, skewed by a rather terrible outing on June 23........ Taking a look at the remaining three, Adams, Matt Childers, and most recently, Ryan Miller, they combined in July to go 0-3 with a 5.52........ Like I said, this didn't work. So I'm happy to see things change and Adams move back to the pen and Jeff Housman added to the rotation. Now with the addition of Jason Shelley (see Transactions thread -- MassBrew), the Stars have a full 11-man pitching staff........ The rotation still isn't set in stone, but for the weekend, Luis Martinez (8-4, 2.39) will start Saturday against Sergio Mitre (6-7, 3.79), followed by Jeff Housman and either Matt Parker (6-4, 2.85) or the newcomer Shelley in Sunday's 5 PM double-header. After that, Pedro Liriano and Ben Hendrickson will be set to go again. The Diamond Jaxx wasted no time in getting to Ryan Miller Friday night before a big crowd, enticed by the Miguel Tejada bobble-head giveaway and fireworks, a much better fireworks show, incidentally, than the July 4 show. I don't want to get too far off the subject, but the rain interruption during that game had a lot to do with it ......... OK. Aron Weston, brought up from Class A two weeks ago, led off and hit Ryan's 1-2 pitch over the third base bag for a single. A tough error on J.J. Hardy on a failed force play from Alejandro Machado put runners on first and second. Brendan Harris loaded the bases when Miller couldn't make a play on a little bleeder to the third base side of the mound......... The Diamond Jaxx did this all night --- dinky hits and dunkers. Few balls were actually well hit by the Diamond Jaxx, but they were timely and although Mike Nannini had an impressive line, he pretty much stuck to the fast ball and slider all night. Next, Jason Dubois hit a tough, hard hit grounder to Corey Hart who made a fine throw to force out Harris, but that was all the Stars would get as Weston scored. Ray Sadler's single to left scored Mike Dzurilla, to cap the scoring........ The D'Jaxx scored all three of their 2nd inning runs on 2-out hits by Mike Dzurilla, Brendan Harris, and Dubois --- a double to right that went to the wall........ Kade Johnson failed on consecutive occasions to nail the runner at the plate on throws from David Krynzel. The first one, I believe the runner would have scored anyway, but the second throw to get Harris to Dubois' double proved to be too hot to handle as it bounced off Kade's glove, danced around his shoulder, then fell in front of him as Harris scored. The Stars were able though to answer back feebly in the first and second innings........ Machado led off the Stars first with a bloop single to left. Krinkles moved him over on a sacrifice, and Hardy followed with a single to left center to score Machado. That was it, though, as Hart, hitting .194 in his last 9 games, hit into a double play........ Brandon Gemoll led off the 2nd inning with a huge 420-ft. HR deep to right-center field. Ray Sadler mounted the wall in a vain attempt, but it was high over the RSC sign, his team-leading 10th HR. After that, Mike Nannini retired 14 of the next 15 hitters. Machado had a 3rd inning single to left-center, and finishing the game 2-for-4, his average cliimbs to .259......... Daryl Clark hit a two-out double over the head of former Star Jackson Melian in right field in the 7th inning that scored Hart with the Stars final run. After that, the Stars couldn't get a knock off their pitching....... Mike Nannini threw 70 pitches, an incredible 78.5% for strikes after 5 innings of work. The Stars' defense prevented another run, maybe more, in the 9th inning. After Mike Dzurilla doubled all the way to the left field wall to lead off the inning, he turned on the burners with a desire for three bases, but the throw from D.J. to J.J. to Corey nailed him for the first out........ With two out, Noochie Varner made the play of the game to end the inning. Jason Dubois' liner deep to right was hooking toward the line and appeared it would drop in for a double, but Varner dived and made a back-hand, shoestring grab, sliding on his belly for the final out. While the Ryan Miller experiment didn't go very well, Matt Childers pitched 4 1/3 no-hit innings in relief, extending his scoreless string in relief to 11 1/3 innings....... After hitting .273 in April, .347 in May, and .327 in June, Dave Krynzel is struggling in July, hitting .188.......Brandon Gemoll, of all people, is setting the offensive pace with a .302 average, but after an 0-for-6 game against Birmingham on July 2, he's hit .351 with 2 HRs and 5 RBIs....... Daryl Clark is hitting .318 in his last 6 games with 5 RBIs. Taking a peek at the progress of some former Stars, Cristian Guerrero is hitting .258 for Inland Empire of the Class A - California League, with 5 HRs and 20 RBIs in 47 games, 4 errors in 37 games in right field........ Chad Green is hitting .256 for the Rochester Red Wings, the Twins top farm team in Class AAA-Rochester (IL), but with only 16 walks, his OBP is only .294. Understand what I'm talking about here, Stars fans?....... Jeff Deardorff is hitting .298 for Class AA - New Britain, the Twins AA farm club and has a .506 slugging pct.......
  21. Thanks to David Weiser in Huntsville for the heads up! Link: cf.rrstar.com/sports/stor...fm?ID=4770 From David directly: A day after Jeff Housman's promotion from Beloit, the Stars have added another pitcher to their roster....... He is right-hander Jason Shelley. Shelley was 7-1, 0.85 for the independent Rockford RiverHawks, leading the Frontier League in ERA and strikeouts (82 in 74 innings). A year ago, Shelley set a Frontier League strikeout record with 156....... Mike Jones was placed on the disabled list retroactively to July 16....... By the way, Jonesy, after his second throwing session, said he felt "great."........ Shelley is 26 years old (3/19/77), B/T right, 6'2", 210, resides now in Naperville, Ill. High Desert bypassed again... Jason Shelley's 2003 numbers: www.baseballamerica.com/c...lley%2C+ja I'm not having any luck finding out more about Shelley's amateur or early pro background.
