The Daily Press ran four Maverick stories online Saturday morning, an all-time record for any affiliate. We here at Brewerfan can't stress enough the quality of the coverage available from Huntsville, Beloit, and the Desert. Helena's off to a nice start, too. Thank you all! Daily Press Notes on Tony Stavros, the Angels' Casey Kotchman (see colbyjack, we told you -- he's fragile), and Brad Nelson, with not just one, but two versions of Bobblehead about to be available... Stavros explains Thursday's fall By MICHAEL ROTHSTEIN/Staff Writer ADELANTO ? When Tony Stavros crumpled to the ground in the bottom of the eighth inning of Thursday's 7-6 victory over Inland Empire, he wasn't sure exactly what happened. The relief pitcher never injured his knee before, so he was unsure of what he should feel and should not feel. "I was getting ready to plant with my left foot and catch the ball before I stepped on the ball with my right foot," Stavros said. "I don't know what it felt like. It felt like I hyper-extended it. "It kind of twisted and I might of twisted it. I'm not sure yet." Stavros has yet to see a doctor. Instead, the right-hander is going to work on the left knee with trainer Matt Toth for a few days before deciding whether or not a doctor's visit is necessary. Before Friday's game, Stavros' knee was about the size of a grapefruit. Where's Casey? Casey Kotchman disappeared from the Rancho Cucamonga lineup in May with what appeared to be a pulled hamstring. Yet now in the middle of July, Kotchman is now in the Anaheim Angels' Arizona complex and according to Rancho Cucamonga Manager Bobby Meacham, has not played in a game. He is, however, running in a pool. Other than that, Meacham said he has no idea when Kotchman will return. Bobble-bobble The first 1,000 fans for today's game against Rancho Cucamonga will receive Brad Nelson bobblehead dolls. Nelson will have two bobbleheads of his likeness this season, as low Class A Beloit (Wis.) also crafted a bobbling Brad for Aug. 3. -

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update: INVIGORATEDAfter two rainouts as bookends for the Southern League All-Star break, the Huntsville Stars' bullpen came back invigorated enough to hurl eight scoreless innings of one-hit baseball, including a rare start for Matt Childers, his first start since May 24 of last year...... He was called on to start literally by surprise and came up huge tonight........ Childers was given the honor as opening day starter against Carolina last year, but after a 2-3, 5.40 record in the rotation, he found his niche in the bullpen, notching a club record 10 saves that July........ It was smooth sailing ever since, including a major league call-up, but recently, he finished June with his worst ERA ever for one month (7.15)....... If he was looking for a performance that would turn his fate around, this was it. In the absence of strikeouts, most of Chilly's outs were hit on the ground....... Matt Parker came in to record the victory by pitching the 5th. Since being hammered for 10 runs in 3 2/3 innings against Carolina on June 23, Matt has thrown seven scoreless innings, all in relief...... The bats had trouble coming around in game two. They caught a break in the 5th when Noochie Varner walked with two out and stole second, the first runner in scoring position for the Stars, but Mike Kremblas grounded out to second to end the threat........ The Smokies then tried to capitalize in the bottom half of the 5th when Dan Moylan singled and reached 2nd on a hit-and-run grounder to third by former Bay Bear Al Benjamin........ With Chris Weekly at the plate, a wild pitch sent Moylan to third, but he got careless. With the infield pulled in at the corners, Chris Barnwell snuck in behind Moylan....... Mike Kremblas caught on quickly, and fired the ball to Barney and Moylan was picked off....... Weekly walked and stole second, but he was stranded after starting pitcher Rhett Parrott grounded out to Richard Paz. The Stars finally got on the scoreboard in the 6th. Barnwell would get a leadoff walk and then pinch-hitter Alejandro Machado, in a bunt situation, blooped a single into right-centerfield, instead....... Paz, with runners on the corners, drove a fly ball deep into centerfield. Steve Schumaker's throw hit the mound and bounced up in the air, easily allowing Barney to score and Machado to take second......... Machado would steal third and Dave Krynzel walked to put runners on the corners once again, but J.J. Hardy hit into a 6-4-3 double play, the fifth double play the Stars would hit into this night........ Ryan Gripp capped the scoring in the 7th inning, batting against a club that saw him for only a week during spring training. The Cardinals, instead, decided to send him back to Milwaukee...... Gripp, looking for a fastball, got ahead a little on the pitch, but enough to show his thanks to the Smokies with a high drive to left for a solo HR......... Kenny Ray was letter perfect in the 7th, retiring six in a row on ground balls after a throwing error by Gripp allowed the Smokies' leadoff hitter to reach in the 6th. Pedro Liriano was saddled with his tenth loss in the first game after a bit of indecisiveness by Corey Hart........ With two out and a runner on first, John Nelson hit a grounder to Corey's left. He hesitated, glanced at second, then threw too late to first as Nelson legged out a hit....... Caonabo Cosme drew a walk to load the bases, then former Huntsville Star Bucky Jacobsen, who won the home run derby at Jacksonville, lined Liriano's 2-2 pitch into right-center for a 2-run double and a 2-0 Tennessee lead......... Noochie Varner cut the lead in half in the 4th with a double to left, scoring Brandon Gemoll, but Skip Schumaker extended the lead with a solo HR in the 5th........ Liriano is now the third 10-game loser since the Stars became a Milwaukee affiliate. Derek Lee, who lost again for Indianapolis this night, lost 10 in 2001 and 2002 and Doug Johnston lost 10 in 2000........ Note: Johnston was later traded to the Cubs for Ray King; thus, in turn, Wes Helms and John Foster -- you get the picture -- MassBrew Like Derek Lee in both 2001 and 2002, Liriano has gotten terrible run support this year, in fact I would say without thorough research on the others, that he has gotten the worst run support of any of the starters......... In Pedro's 10 losses, he has received just 9 runs, an average of 1.54 runs per 9 IP...... In his last victory, on June 14, he shut out the Diamond Jaxx, 1-0, on three hits in 5 2/3 IP........ I'm curious to know what the run support is for the rest of the staff, and I'm eager to get to work on that....... The double-header split was the 2nd for the Stars this season. They have not lost a twin-bill. Contrary to Huntsville's relationship this year with Milwaukee, the Carolina Mudcats have been picked clean by the Marlins' promotions of Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera to the majors and Aaron Small and Marty McLeary to Albuquerque........ Friday night, three key members of the Mudcats were traded away to the Texas Rangers in exchange for their closer, Ugueth Urbina. They were # 1 overall pick in 2000, Adrian Gonzalez, left-hander Ryan Snare, and outfielder Will Smith. Snare was 5-4 and leading the team in strikeouts and Smith was hitting .293 and Gonzalez .307........ Among several promotions and deals during the Southern League All-Star break: The Lookouts lost pitchers Dustin Moseley and Scott Dunn. Moseley, who lost four times to the Stars this season, was promoted to Louisville and Dunn was traded to the White Sox and assigned to Birmingham. The Barons' eccentric Japanese starter Tetsu Yofu was called up to Charlotte and the Yankees signed former Greenville Brave infielder Keoni De Renne and assigned him to Class AA-Trenton, where he was recently placed on the disabled list. Former Huntsville Stars pitcher Al Hawkins was released by the independent Newark Bears of the Atlantic League. He was 2-3 with a 6.99 ERA. Someone I know who had recently talked to Al says his velocity never came back after surgery about three years ago, and he was topping only 82 mph on the gun........ John Wasdin's contract was purchased from Nashville by the Toronto Blue Jays....... Friday night, Wasdin got his first start in the majors since 2000, but the Yankees pounded him for 8 hits in 1+ inning. In the 2nd inning, after failing to retire five batters, he was taken out of the game....... In early April of this year, Wasdin fired the first perfect game in Nashville's 26-year history, a 4-0 gem over Albuquerque, striking out 15...... Wasdin headed the Huntsville Stars' sparkling 1994 rotation (A's organization), which led them to a Southern League Championship. He won two games in the post-season without a loss. Despite the five-day rest, the Stars are still playing short-handed after promotions to Derek Lee and Ryan Knox. They have only 10 pitchers and 3 outfielders and it's going to get even more desperate after Dave Krynzel and J.J. Hardy leave tomorrow for Chicago to participate in the Futures Game........ It will be interesting to see what kind of creative lineup Frank Kremblas will come up with or if the Stars will get any kind of help in the near future........ Ben Hendrickson (3-1, 2.77) will get the start Saturday against Julio Villalon (3--0, 1.95). -

Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 6, High Desert 3 The first line of the game summary just might give you chills -- hide the children... High Desert Site Game Summary: ADELANTO, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks haven?t won two straight games for almost two months. Four unanswered runs by the Quakes in the final two innings ended that possibility on Friday night, as the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes downed the Mavs by a score of 6-3 at Mavericks Stadium. Mavs closer Bobby Bystrowski (0-4) got out of a jam in the eighth, but surrendered three runs in the ninth to drop his second game in as many appearances. After hitting Mike Eylward to open the ninth, Bystrowski walked Tommy Murphy to put runners at first and second. A two-run triple down the right field line by Jason Aspito scored two to give the Quakes their first lead of the night at 5-3. A wild pitch brought home Aspito to make it 6-3. After the offense squandered a lead off triple in the eighth, the Mavs tried to rally in the ninth but Todd West grounded into a double play after Brian Foster reached on an error. Chris Morris walked, but Quakes reliever Richard Thompson struck out Ozzie Chavez looking, to earn his second save of the year. The Mavs broke through with the game?s first two runs in the fifth inning off Quakes starter Jake Woods. West and Chavez each picked up RBI hits to give Mavs starter David Nolasco a 2-0 lead after five. Nolasco couldn?t hold the lead though, as Jeff Mathis and Dallas McPherson had back-to-back doubles to get the Quakes on the board. McPherson scored on an infield single by Justin Turner with two outs, to tie the game at 2-2. The Mavs got the lead in the sixth at 3-2, as Brad Nelson scored on a Jeremy Frost sac fly. The Quakes got the equalizer with a run in the eighth off Mavs reliever Tommy Marx, winning it for reliever Mark O?Sullivan (2-2). The Mavs' send Dan Hall (6-7) to the mound on Saturday night against Rancho?s Dan Mozingo at 7:05 (9:05 Central). Brad Nelson bobblehead dolls will be given away to the first 1,000 fans. Game Two: Huntsville 2, Tennessee (Cardinals) 0 Considering that the Stars will be without "Futures Game" participants David Krynzel and J.J. Hardy for at least a couple of games this week, this was a big win. Should be fun to speculate -- let's see, Chris Barnwell will play SS, with Noochie Varner and Daryl Clark in the OF along with "?" Richard Paz? They'll be scrambling... RHP's Matt Childers, Matt Parker and Ken Ray combine for the one-hit victory in this seven-inning affair, with Childers tossing four no-hit innings after being roughed up last time out. Childers was only told today that he'd need to make this spot start. Still not sure how long the Stars can go with just ten pitchers, though. Mike Kremblas with a key pick-off throw; Alejandro Machado with his first Huntsville base hit; the Stars grounded into five double plays in the 14 innings of the twinbill; Ryan Gripp with a nice insurance HR in the 7th... Ben Hendrickson will pitch Saturday night... From the Mavs' pre-game: High Desert RH reliever Tony Stavros, who injured his left knee in a play at first base Thursday, is in the Mavs' dugout tonight. His knee is wrapped in an ace bandage for now with what is being called a twisted knee. But the training staff needs to wait for the trauma (I imagine swelling) to subside before a true diagnosis can be made. -

Regardless of how this game turns out (now 4-1 after six), I'd like to thank the Brewers for reminding us why they are the only sixth-place team in baseball. -

The start of the Norfolk - Indianapolis game is being delayed by yet more rain in Indy. Glendon Rusch spoke in very high terms of two Indians in today's pre-game show with Jim Powell: Bill Hall and newly-named closer Jason Childers, who he singled out among all the Tribe's pitchers. -

So as not to be too repetitive, just a snippet or two from Friday's Indianapolis Media Notes: TOP OF THE ORDER: Bill Hall was moved into the lead-off spot in the lineup June 7 and has gone 36-for-107 (.336) with 25 runs scored, 13 doubles, two home runs, eight walks and five stolen bases in 26 games since. Hall has hit safely in 33 of his last 39 games. In that period, he's batting .317 (52-for-164). Hall had back-to-back eight-game hitting streaks in June (June 7-16 and 18-26). HOT AT THE PLATE: Over the last 50 games Jim Rushford is hitting .351 (65-for-185). He has five home runs in his last 13 starts. Cody McKay boasts the longest active hitting streak on the club. He brings a season-best nine-game streak into tonight's game. In 16 games since June 21, McKay is hitting .447 (21-for-47). Wilton Veras has shown some pop in his bat lately. Over the last four games, Veras is hitting .500 (7-for-14) with three doubles and a home run. The four extra-base hits are more than one-third of his season total of 11. -

Turns out the end to the Mavericks' losing streak last night coincided with High Desert announcer Mike Lindskog wearing his newly purchased (gift from his wife) Brewerfan.net hat for the first time. He's supposed to mention it again in tonight's pre-game. We've said it before, but it bears repeating: Ahh, The Power of Brewerfan http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif -

Yesterday (July 9th), the Brewers signed shorstop Alcides Escobar and assigned him to the Arizona Brewers. No data on Escobar so far... The Brewers now list Escobar on their Arizona roster, squarepusher. Bats/Throws R, 6'1", 155, DOB 12/16/86 -- yup, he's barely 16 and a half years old -- no birthplace info... Also, according to the Brewer web site, Helena catcher Alberto Segura (10-for-24, .417 in the early going) was transferred down to Arizona. -

While Friday AM's Helena newspaper accounts had LHP Eric Henderson off to High Desert, the Snappers' site now indicates that he is moving up one level, to Beloit. Sorry about the confusion. We'll trust the Snappers front office here. Also, the Snappers say that the Brewers have released 2001 3rd round RHP Jon Steitz. The "stuff" that wowed them on the bullpen mound never made it into games, did it? Can't win them all....
