  1. Plain and simple, the Brewers knew this was to be a huge draft-and-follow year because they had so many Latin kids in Helena and Maryvale after the dissolution of the DSL and VSL squads. They've signed their early picks, and will monitor the rest. No budgetary concerns at all in terms of who they signed this summer. Prettyman? Eh, to steal a Toby-ism.
  2. Earlier in this thread we discussed the Brewers' top four draft picks and how they comapre to other picks in their round bonus-wise. Baseball America has now posted bonus information for the first ten rounds: www.baseballamerica.com/d...p?team=MIL Notice that you can select by round to make your comparisons. www.baseballamerica.com/t...aftdb.html Always takes a bit more to ink those high schoolers, and each of the Brewer HS picks did well. Keep in mind that Lenny Leclercq grabbed his $100,000 in Round 11 (not noted at the above link). Steve Sollman, as a college senior with little leverage, signs for $10,000.
  3. Daily Press High Desert Game Story: I.E. bullpen shuts down Mavericks; Villanueva, Van Iderstine extend hit streaks in loss By TIM HARAN/Staff Writer SAN BERNARDINO ? Stretching the starting pitching was a top priority. Neither Inland Empire nor High Desert was eager to make a quick call to the bullpen on Tuesday night, considering the teams had combined to play 7 hours and 31 minutes of baseball over 22 innings the previous two days. The Mavericks kept their starter on the mound as long as they could, but by the time Greg Bruso was pulled in the fifth inning, the damage had been done. Inland Empire roughed up the Mavs' right-hander for six runs in 4 2-3 innings en route to a 7-2 victory at Arrowhead Credit Union Park. "He didn't find his rhythm the first couple of innings but then he settled down," High Desert manager Mel Queen said. "He might have started to tire a little in (the fifth)." For Inland Empire, starter Michael Rowland-Smith appeared to strain his knee with two outs in the first inning, forcing his team into early bullpen activity. Despite wincing after each pitch in the following frame, the 6-foot-3 left-hander gutted out a scoreless second inning before giving way to reliever Darwin Soto in the third. Turns out, the early call worked just fine. Soto (2-4), who had not pitched more than three innings in any single outing this season, worked five scoreless innings against the Mavs. He allowed just two hits and struck out six. "He's got an excellent changeup," Queen said of the 66ers' middle reliever. "Unless you can go up there and know how to sit on a changeup, he's going to get you out." Rowland-Smith, who will compete next month for Australia in the Olympic Games, allowed one unearned run on four hits before leaving the game. He reportedly strained his patella tendon while trying to cover first base. Froilan Villanueva put High Desert in front early on Tuesday, knocking an RBI single in the top of the first. But the lead didn't stand as Jon Nelson doubled in the bottom of the inning to drive in the first of his three runs on the night. He scored on Carlos Arroyo's bloop single. The 66ers loaded the bases in the second inning before Nelson knocked a 3-0 pitch into shallow left field, driving in a pair of runs. The left fielder went 4-for-5 on the night, with two doubles. Inland Empire (17-15) scored two more in the fifth inning, chasing Bruso, and added another on Gary Harris' solo home run to lead off the eighth. High Desert (11-21) threatened in its half of the eighth, placing runners on first and third with no outs. But 66ers second baseman Michael Garciaparra backhanded Travis Hinton's shot up the middle and flipped the ball to Juan Gonzalez, starting the turn of a key double play. "Any time you're coming back and the first two guys get on with base hits, a double play just takes all the steam out of you," Queen said. "The big part of that play was that Garciaparra called it. He let the shortstop know that he needed to break off and go back toward the bag." Mavs' reliever Dan Kolb, after pitching a pair of innings on Sunday, struck out Harris to escape the fifth and allowed just one run in 3 1-3 innings of relief. "We really needed him to finish that off tonight and he did," Queen said. NOTES: Ben Van Iderstine, who went 3-for-4, extended his hit streak to nine games. ... Villanueva extended his hit streak to 12 games, matching his and the team's longest of the season. ... The Mavs scored in the first inning for the third straight game ... Jeff Eure, normally a third baseman, entered the game at shortstop in the eighth inning after Enrique Cruz aggravated a sore finger that has bothered him for about 10 days, Queen said.
  4. Helena Independent Record Game Story: First-half crown slips away By KEVIN SHIVELY - IR Sports Writer The Helena Brewers lost 6-2 to Provo on Tuesday night at Kindrick Legion Field to finish the first half of the season second in the Pioneer League's North Division. A Helena win would have put the club in first to finish the first half, but the loss left the Brewers a half game behind Billings. The Mustangs had a game in Missoula earlier in the season wiped off the schedule, leading to their slight advantage in the standings. Provo scored five of its six runs in the third inning, when second baseman Ryan Leahy hit an RBI single off right-hander Justin Barnes, and designated hitter Andrew Toussaint cranked a three-run homer over the center field wall. "We've got to take our hats off to Provo," Helena manager Johnny Narron said. "They had four pitchers throw hard at us. They played a great game." The last run was on a sacrifice fly from Mike Perdomo. Perdomo's sacrifice brought in the last run the Angels would score. The Brewers brought in Josh Wahpepah, who pitched the last six innings of the game without a walk and only one hit. "Wahpepah was lights out," said Narron. "That was some of the better pitching you'll see at this field. He threw a great game." The Helena ace sat down the first three batters in every inning but the eighth, racking up five strikeouts and allowing only three baserunners. A flawless Helena defense also was a key part of keeping the Angels from any more runs. The Brewers didn't commit a single error in the game, and only one Provo player had more than one hit in the game. Toussaint went 2-for-4, and on top of his homer, drove in the only Provo run outside of the third inning. Unfortunately for the Brewers, the Angels were errorless too and only allowed five hits. Gilberto Acosta had one of Helena's two RBI in the game, driving in Charlie Fermaint with a double off the wall in right-center. Fermaint had the other RBI, with a long shot to left-center that scored Grant Richardson, but Fermaint tried to stretch the hit into a triple and was thrown out at the bag. Richardson led the team in hits, going 2-for-3 in the game. Helena will start the second half of the season tonight in Billings at 7:05. 5. Beloit Game Summary from the Timber Rattlers' Site: For the second game in a row the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat the Beloit Snappers. Justin Ruchti singled in the winning run for a 5-4 Rattler win Tuesday night. Chad Fillinger made his Rattler debut and picked up the win with two perfect innings in relief of Nibaldo Acosta. Beloit (54-48 overall, 16-16 second half) scored twice in the top of the first inning on a two-out, two-run double by Adam Heether. Wisconsin (45-56, 14-18) answered with their most productive first inning of the second half. Beloit starter Brian Montalbo walked the first two Rattler batters. Adam Jones delivered a two-run double to tie the game. Bryan LaHair followed with an RBI single for a 3-2 Rattler lead. Another walk and an error loaded the bases. Josh Womack grounded into a double play, but LaHair scored to make it a two run advantage for Wisconsin. The Snappers got an unearned run in the top of the fourth. Steve Moss sent a slow grounder to short. Rattler third baseman Chris Collins cut in front and made the play, but threw wildly. Adam Heether scored all the way from first. Manuel Ramirez tied the game with a two-out RBI single in the top of the sixth off Acosta. Wladimir Balentien started the game winning rally with a one out double. Ruchti fouled off a tough 1-2 pitch and then sent a single into left to extend his season high hitting streak to six games and send Balentien home with the winning run. 6. Huntsville Site Game Summary: Trailing 2-0 with West Tenn prospect Bobby Brownlie throwing darts from the mound, things looked bleak for the Stars after the first time through their batting order. Huntsville promptly reeled off six unanswered runs on its way to a 6-3 win on Tuesday night at Pringles Park. The Stars (17-12, 49-50) remained tied with Birmingham atop the Southern League West second-half standings. ?We changed our approach against Brownlie the second time through,? Stars hitting instructor Sandy Guerrero said. ?Rickie [Weeks] and Tony [Gwynn Jr.] both hit good fastballs, then he got out of his game and made a few mistakes.? Rickie Weeks hit a fourth-inning solo homer to cut the deficit in half, and Huntsville took the lead on Tony Gwynn Jr.?s two-run, sixth-inning blast. Gwynn?s drive came on a 3-2 pitch and prompted the ejection of Jaxx skipper Bobby Dickerson, who argued vociferously that ball three to Gwynn should have been called strike two. Huntsville sealed the game with three in the seventh on Ryan Knox?s run-scoring single ? a 3-2 base hit through the drawn-in infield, knocking Brownlie out of the game ? Weeks? RBI-single and Prince Fielder?s bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. Reliever Paul Stewart (5-1) notched his fifth win, fanning three and allowing one hit over 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Brownlie (9-7) suffered his seventh loss, permitting five earned runs on six hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. John Novinsky picked up his 13th save in 14 chances, fanning two in a perfect ninth. Stars lefty Jeff Housman (4-6, 3.23) meets Jaxx left-hander Ryan O?Malley (1-1, 3.79) in game two of the series Wednesday night at Pringles Park. Game time is 7:05 p.m. and the FPH Financial Services Pre-game Show starts at 6:50 p.m. Stars baseball can be heard on ESPN 1450 and at www.huntsvillestars.com. David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update: GWYNN'S SECOND WINDFrom this point on, the Stars have only eight games out of their own division........ The remaining 32 games are against teams in their own division, and starting with this series with the Diamond Jaxx, one of the two teams they need to hold off right now, 12 of them are against this team, eight of them at Pringles Park........ So, they are off to a good start, with 19 home games (including make-up games against Birmingham) ahead of them in August. The weather was perfect 76° tonight at Pringles Park. The Stars hadn't seen better weather, unusually cool and dry for July....... Unfortunately, the game didn't start off as well........ Bobby Brownlie, the Southern League ERA leader and the #6 prospect in the Cubs' organization instantly took command. With a 1-0 lead, thanks to a sacrifice fly in the 2nd inning, Brownlie had allowed just one hit through three innings. Tony Gwynn, Jr., who singled in the 1st, had been picked off. Brownlie struck out the side in the 2nd and retired the side in order in the 3rd........ Matt Ford, struggling with his control, got off easy, allowing just a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and one out. The effects of elbow soreness may still be lingering. He hasn't consistently been able to get to or past the 5th inning, reaching his pitch limit of 75 before getting that far....... . In the bottom half for WT, Ford appeared to be out of an inning when Matt Creighton, who hit into a double play in his first at-bat, muscled a solo home run to left-center. It was just his 2nd home run in 138 at-bats........ Just one batter previously, Ford had been saved by a line out double play by Richard Lewis, the league's 2nd leading hitter. Lewis had hit into only two double plays all season. Rickie Weeks provided Ford with a smaller margin, thanks to a leadoff home run way over the head of left fielder Mike Dzurilla......... It was Weeks' 6th homer of the season......... Weeks has lined all his others. This one had more majesty to it, the first one he actually sent into orbit as it passed by the light pole in left. Ford got out of the 4th, thanks again to another double play, but after getting the first two batters out in the 5th, started hitting the bumps....... After retiring Aron Weston on a 3-1 grounder to Prince Fielder, Richard Lewis was not going to be denied. He singled a 1-1 pitch on a hop to left-center........ A wild pitch in the dirt moved him to second. Matt Creighton walked on a 3-2 pitch....... Paul Stewart, who had been warming up in the pen, got the call. (Johnny Raburn came in for Ozzie Chavez in a double switch.). He struck out Matt Craig to finish the inning. Essentially, that's the last bit of trouble the D'Jaxx gave the Stars for the rest of the night........ The bullpen, with a 7-2 record, 7 saves, and a 3.14 ERA in the month of July, continued to build on their credentials. They gave up just one run on two hits and a couple of walks for the remaining 4 1/3 innings. It didn't take too long for the Stars to lumber up........ Kade Johnson chopped Brownlie's first pitch to shortstop Ronnie Cedeno, who had to make a diving stab to stop it, but Kade, who runs pretty good for a backstop, beat Cedeno's throw, even if it was off the mark. Kade, .297 in the 2nd half, is hitting .347 for July, his best month this season, beating his .340 April start........ Raburn dropped a bunt to move Kade over and an off-line throw following a fly ball by Weeks moved him to third........ Brownlie went full on Gwynn, Jr., who fouled off a couple of pitches on the way to a 3-2 count, then hit a high drive over the head of Weston to put the Stars ahead, 3-2, after a questionable ball three......... The ball three call made Bobby Dickerson, the D'Jaxx manager, angry, but the home run really set him off like a rocket........ Racing out of the dugout and throwing his cap to the ground, he went nose-to-nose with home plate ump Scot Chamberlain until Chamberlain finally threw him out........ Gwynn doesn't go deep often. It was only his 2nd home run, in fact. But Gwynn, who perhaps should have been headed back to the dugout on that ball three call, at least according to many partisan observers, got his second wind and made the most of it......... It did not break open this game, but it was the turning point. The Stars sealed the game with a three-run 7th that put them ahead 6-2. Jamie Gann started the rally with a leadoff double, advanced to third on a wild pitch, then came home on a single on a 3-2 pitch through a drawn-in infield by Ryan Knox......... Former Knoxville Smokies pitcher Hugo Castellanos entered and Kade Johnson squibbed a single behind the mound. That was followed by a walk to Johnny Raburn......... Rickie Weeks' infield single with the bases full made it 5-2 and when Prince Fielder was hit in the butt by Castellanos' pitch, it drove home Raburn........ That was all the Stars needed........ They are now 13-9 in June and 17-12 in the second half, still tied with Birmingham after the Barons destroyed Montgomery, 19-2. Former Star Richard Paz went 4-for-5 and drove in five runs in that game. The Stars are home for 19 games (including those make-up games) in August, and each one of those are against division rivals --- only four against last place Montgomery and none against the team the Stars could face for the Western Division title, the home run happy Mobile Bay Bears, who have hit 26 home runs off Stars pitching, more than half as many as the next club, Birmingham and Tennessee, each with 12........ The Stars have a stretch of 16 games down the road in which they face the Diamond Jaxx 10 times. Jeff Housman (4-6, 3.23, 5th among Southern League ERA leaders) will face left-hander Ryan O'Malley (1-1, 3.79), Wednesday. Housman is having his best month, with a 3-1, 1.96 July. 7. Indianapolis Post-Game Notes: GAME SUMMARY: Jorge De La Rosa pitched six scoreless innings Tuesday night as the Indianapolis Indians defeated the Norfolk Tides, 6-0. The victory evened the three-game series at 1-1, with the rubber game to be decided Wednesday morning at 11:15 a.m. from Harbor Park. De La Rosa (2-6), who had struggled in four July starts, posting an 0-1 record and 7.94 ERA, picked up the victory, allowing five hits, walking none and striking out five. He teamed with Clint Weibl and Ben Ford to secure the club?s fifth shutout. The shutout was the Tribe pitching staff?s first since July 9, a 3-0 victory over Ottawa at Victory Field. The Tribe offense got untracked early, scoring a run in the second inning and two in the fourth to take an early 3-0 lead off Otterbein, Ind. (Benton Central High School) native Neal Musser. Chris Coste scored two runs and collected three hits to lead the Tribe attack. Indianapolis is now 44-59, while Norfolk falls to 47-53. QUOTES: Chris Coste, Tribe first baseman: ?We?ve had a lot of leads in these games where we?ve lost the past two months,? Coste said. ?It?s nice to see our pitching staff do a great job finishing tonight. We need to do a lot more of this. I prefer catching and third base, but it was fun to play first base tonight. Jorge De La Rosa threw strikes. He has three pitches and when he can have command of two of those, he can be very tough. You will see him in the big leagues someday. He has tremendous stuff and once he throws strikes consistently, you will definitely remember his name.? 15. Indianapolis Post-Game Notes: GAME SUMMARY: The Indians? bullpen came undone Monday night as Norfolk battled back to defeat the Tribe, 6-3. Aaron Heilman, Logansport, Ind. native and Notre Dame product, shut out the Indians for the first five innings, before he ran into control problems in the sixth inning. Heilman (5-8) walked in two Indians runs, but was able to minimize the damage after that by allowing just one more run in the frame. Meantime, Tribe starter Wes Obermueller threw five solid innings, allowing two runs on five hits, walking three and striking out five. Obermueller gave way to newly aquired free agent pitcher Gary Glover in the seventh inning. Glover (0-1) promptly walked the first hitter he faced, Justin Huber, then gave up two runs in the frame. Tribe reliever Dan Reichert, who entered the game in the eighth, was also victimized for two runs. The Tides received outstanding middle relief from Vic Darensbourg who pitched the eighth inning and struck out the side. Heath Bell picked up his ninth save for the Tides, who improve to 47-52. Indianapolis falls to 43-59. QUOTES: Justin Huber, Norfolk Tides catcher on a walk that resulted in the winning run: ?I was looking for a good pitch to hit all night,? said Huber. ?I didn?t get much to hit against Glover, but it resulted in a walk. That was good for us to get the inning started. It was great to score. I want to keep this going. It was fun to play against another Aussie (Trent Durrington) tonight.? NOTES: Sunday?s game, postponed due to rain, will be picked up in Indianapolis as part of a doubleheader on Sunday, August 15 at Victory Field. Opening pitch will be 2:00 p.m. The Brewers have aquired Russell Branyan from Triple-A Buffalo and have designated outfielder Chris Magruder for assignment to Indianapolis. Magruder has 72 hours to report to the Tribe.
  16. Daily Press High Desert Game Story: H.D. puts emphatic end to skid Mavs pound out season-high in hits while ending a five-game losing streak By MARK A. PEINADO/Staff Writer SAN BERNARDINO ? While nothing is ever a certainty when it comes to predicting High Desert Maverick victories, one could have reasonably assumed the Mavs were going to stop their five-game losing streak after the top half of the first inning. High Desert had given starter Bo Hall a six-run cushion against a team he has dominated. Hall, in three starts against Inland Empire held a record of 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA. In 18 innings, he had allowed the 66ers just six earned runs. With a big lead in his back pocket, even Hall had a bad night. He wasn't alone. Both starters were gone by the fourth inning, a run was scored in nearly every inning and the Mavs' six-run lead, was almost gone by the fifth. But Mario Mendez and Callix Crabbe made sure the losing streak would grown no more. Mendez went 4-for-5 with four RBIs including a three-run homer and Crabbe made two spectacular defensive plays to lead High Desert to a 15-8 win over Inland Empire at Arrowhead Credit Union Park on Monday night. The victory snapped the Mavericks' five-game losing streak and ended Inland Empire's four-game win streak. With the game still in doubt in the top of the seventh inning, Mendez's three-run home run provided the Mavericks' bullpen with the necessary cushion to put away a pesky Inland Empire club. His eighth homer of the season gave High Desert a 15-8 lead, their largest of the game. The bullpen then did its job. In the final three innings, Mavs' relievers David Nolasco and Nick Slack combined to shut down the 66ers' offense. Slack struck out the side in the ninth. Crabbe helped the Mavericks cause with his glove. With High Desert leading 8-6 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Rene Rivera came to the plate. With one on and no one out, Rivera lined a Reggie Rivard pitch up the middle. The High Desert second baseman ranged to his right, snagged the ball and flipped it to shortstop Enrique Cruz. Cruz stepped on the bag and threw Rivera out at first for a double play. Showing he can also range to his left, Crabbe took away a hit from Jesus Guzman in the bottom of the sixth. It was a key play because the next two 66er hitters reached on a single and a double. Inland Empire managed two runs in the inning to close within 12-8 but if it weren't for Crabbe's defensive play, things could have gone bad for High Desert. Crabbe also ignited the Mavericks' six-run first inning. With one out, he doubled off Greg Wear. Ben Van Iderstine followed with a single and Travis Hinton doubled. John Vanden Berg grounded out but Iderstine scored on the play. Then it was a singles parade as Jeff Eure, Troy Farnsworth, Mendez and Cruz all reached on singles to give Hall a 6-0 lead without having thrown a pitch. Seven different Mavericks had multiple hits. Mendez led the attack with four. Farnsworth, Hinton and Kennard Bibbs had three hits. Crabbe, Cruz and Van Iderstine had two hits. Both Froilan Villanueva and Van Iderstine extended their hitting streaks. Villanueva is at 11 games while Van Iderstine is at eight. Van Iderstine has seven multi-hit games in his last eight games. The Mavericks pounded out 21 hits which surpassed their season-high of 20 that was accomplished last Tuesday in a 17-1 victory over Lancaster. Only catcher Vanden Berg didn't reach base. He left after the third inning after his right hand was hit with a foul pitch behind the plate The 15 runs were the most scored against the 66ers this year and the six-run first inning was also the most runs given up by Inland Empire. The teams combined for 14 extra-base hits.

  18. Final: Helena 4, Provo (Angels) 2 Brewers still need some help Tuesday in order to gain a first-half playoff spot... Helena Independent Republic Game Story: Brewers win, thaaaa brewers win By KEVIN SHIVELY - IR Sports Writer The Helena Brewers got their second 4-2 win in two nights over the Provo Angels, and once again strong pitching was the key. Robbie Wooley, who took the mound in the fifth, pitched the last five innings of the game, and gave up only two hits and no runs. "I can't say enough about the pitching tonight," said Helena manager Johnny Narron. "Wooley came in and those guys didn't know which way to turn." The Helena pitcher only gave up one walk and struck out three. Alvaro Martinez started the game on the mound, and Edwin Walker came in for two innings in the third, allowing one hit and no walks. The Brewers defense was also solid. "Defensively we've been playing some great games," said the Helena skipper. "Alcides Escobar was covering ground left and right." The 17-year-old shortstop made several plays in the game, including a diving stop in the seventh, which he fired off his knees to get Mike Perdomo out at first. Escobar also turned a double play and ran down a ball to get the last out of the game. At the plate, the Brewers only had seven hits, but the fourth inning saw four of those, allowing the Brewers to score three runs in the side. Jake Serfass led the inning off with a stand-up double, and a bunt single from Charlie Fermaint moved him to third. Catcher Alberto Segura stepped to the plate and sent a 2-2 pitch from Provo pitcher Jason Cox down the left field line, scoring Serfass and Fermaint on an RBI-double. Escobar hit a sacrifice bunt to move Segura to third, and Gilberto Acosta chopped a single over the third baseman to move him across the plate. "It was good because we've had a problem lately getting the hits we need with runners on second and third," said Narron. The team didn't score in the rest of the game, but it was enough for the win. Segura hit 2-for-3 with two RBI and Acosta was 2-for-4. Helena leads the Angels 2-0 in their three game series, and the two teams will play tonight to end the first half of the season. Helena will throw starter Justin Barnes (3-0, 2.43) and the Angels will give the nod to Fernando Rodriguez (1-1, 5.25). The game will start at 7:05 p.m (8:05 Central). 21. From The Sports Network INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS - The Indians' victory on July 24th snapped a season long 13-game losing streak, but not before the team dropped six games, placing them in last place of the International League West Division with a 43-58 mark. Corey Hart collected seven hits, four runs, one long ball and four RBI for the Indians this past week, while Jeff Liefer went just 4-for-22 with four runs, two homers and five RBI. Liefer is struggling in the month of July, posting a .174 batting average, which is much worse than his .273 average he recorded in June. Chris Coste tallied seven hits for Indianapolis this past week, while Luis Figueroa went 8-for-24 at the plate. Travis Phelps was the first pitcher to win a game for the Indians since July 9th. In that outing against Richmond, Phelps allowed three runs on four hits in six innings of work. After going 0-2 with a 6.00 in the month of June, Phelps has settled down in July to post a 2-1 record with a 3.05 ERA. HUNTSVILLE STARS - The Stars dropped four of their six contests this past week to fall to 16-12 in the second half of the season. The 16-12 mark places the Stars in a tie for the top spot with Birmingham in the West Division of the Southern League. Rickie Weeks collected five hits and scored three runs for the Stars this past week, while Brad Nelson also tallied five hits at the plate. After batting just .225 in the month of June, Weeks has stepped up his performance at the plate in July, posting a .311 average. Anthony Gwynn was 5- for-25 at the plate for Huntsville and fellow teammate Prince Fielder went 7- for-21 with one home run and three RBI. Ryan Costello recorded his second straight victory on July 23rd. In that victory against Birmingham Costello was literally untouchable, as he tossed six hitless innings of baseball. In his last two starts the young hurler has tossed 15 innings, scattering just three hits, while striking out 16 batters. Because of his incredible performance last week, Costello was named Pitcher of the Week in the Southern League. HIGH DESERT MAVERICKS - The Mavericks dropped five of seven contests this past week, lowering their second half record to 10-20 on the season. The horrid record places the squad in last place in the South Division of the California League. Travis Hinton continues to be the offensive spark plug for the club. In the past week, Hinton was 6-for-28 with five runs, three doubles and five RBI. Second Baseman Callix Crabbe tallied 10 hits, seven runs, two home runs and five RBI in 26 at-bats for the Mavericks. Kennard Bibbs also collected 10 hits this past week and swiped three bags, giving him a total of 29 on the year. As for the pitching staff, Bo Hall was defeated on July 22nd giving him his fourth loss in his last seven starts. Against Lancaster the young hurler allowed five runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings of work. Hall has been terrible at home this season, going just 1-6 with an ERA of 8.61. BELOIT SNAPPERS - The Beloit Snappers were victorious in six of their seven contests this past week, raising their second half record to 16-14. That mark is good enough for third place in the West Division in the Midwest League. Vinny Rottino collected 10 hits, scored four runs, hit one long ball and drove in 11 runs in 28 at-bats. Adam Heether currently has a nine-game hitting streak for Beloit. During that span, Heether is 13-for-38 with eight runs scored, five doubles, one long ball and four RBI. Terry Trofholz went 11- for-32 with seven runs and four doubles at the plate this past week. Greg Moreira defeated Wisconsin on July 24th for his seventh victory of the season. In that outing, Moreira allowed just two runs on four hits in six innings of work to bring his season mark to 7-4. HELENA BREWERS - The Brewers split eight games this past week to bring their overall record to 20-16 on the season. The mark is good for second place in the North Division of the Pioneer League. Grant Richardson was productive at the plate this week, going 13-for-36 with three runs, five double, a home run and five RBI. Tony Festa also produced at the plate for the Brewers, going 12-for-28 with seven runs scored, one long ball and five RBI, while Steven Sollman also chipped in this past week by collecting 10 hits in 27 at-bats. Starting pitcher Alvaro Martinez took the mound on July 21st looking for his first win since June 29th, but he did not figure in the decision. In that contest, the young hurler allowed three runs on four hits in five innings of work. After going 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA in the month of June, Martinez has struggled terribly in July, posting an 0-3 mark with a 7.94 ERA.
  22. Miscellaneous updates from David Weiser in Huntsville coming off last night's rainout: The long-awaited removal of the upper deck seats began Monday, starting with Section HH, directly behind home plate. Those seats are all gone, but as of this posting, it's the only section that's been removed so far........ The upper deck seating is as old as the ballpark itself and many of those seats are so broken, they cannot be sat in. Some are totally unusable and some are an amalgamation of what used to be the former lower deck seating, which was blue...... They are easy to tell since the upper deck seats were red........ Workers also have been putting fresh blacktop on the concourse as you enter the stadium. The third base side is done and now the first base side, the visitors side, is nearly finished. With the move of the G'Braves to Mississippi, how will the Southern League realign itself after this season is over? During the Southern League All-Star break, the issue was discussed and SL President Don Mincher believes the chances are close to 100% that the league will divide North and South, with Huntsville losing every one of its Alabama rivals in a new alignment....... The Stars will be in a Northern Division with West Tennessee, Tennessee, Chattanooga, and Carolina -- its longest road trip....... Unless the league returns to a balanced schedule, this can't possibly work to the Stars advantage, unless an unbalanced schedule gives them more dates with Birmingham and Montgomery than with Carolina....... Whatever needs to be worked out, will wait until close to the end of the season. This deal flew under my radar, so I'll share it here........ The Seattle Mariners traded outfielder Cristian Guerrero to the Anaheim Angels for minor league pitcher Austin Bilke....... Guerrero hit .224 for the San Antonio Missions this year with 8 HRs and 23 RBIs, not much better than his two-year impact with the Huntsville Stars. He hit .223 in his first season with the Stars -- 2002 -- and .195 in 32 games last year before being demoted to High Desert and ultimately waived.

  24. Daily Press High Desert Game Story: Mel Queen not pleased with RHP David Nolasco... 66ers complete second sweep of Mavs High Desert rallies back but falls in extra frames By MARK A. PEINADO/Staff Writer ADELANTO ? Rene Rivera had been hitless in five at-bats. The Inland Empire catcher had been mired in a slump when it came to runners in scoring position. Going into his at-bat in the top of the 13th inning, Rivera was 0-for-2 and had stranded four base runners. Coming into the game, he was 11-for-62 and had only driven in 13. So when the count reached 3-1, Rivera left no doubt. He hammered a David Nolasco pitch to the deepest part of Mavericks Stadium. While the ball didn't leave the park, the damage was done. Rivera's two-run double lifted the 66ers to a 10-8 victory and their second sweep of the Mavericks this season. "It looked like there wasn't a home plate out there," High Desert manager Mel Queen said. "(Nolasco) hits the first guy. Jeff (Eure) makes a good play on a bunt, that should have picked him up psychologically. He walks the next guy then goes 3-1 on the next guy, a double. ... He probably threw about two strikes the whole inning. "You can't be a pitcher and do that. You have to be able to throw strikes. If they hit you, they hit you." Up until the 13th inning, both bullpens pitched well. High Desert's Homero Rivera pitched the 10th, 11th and 12th innings. He allowed only one hit and struck out one but not to be outdone, the 66ers' Cesar Jimenez was even more effective. Jimenez went 4 1-3 innings for Inland Empire allowing only one hit and striking out four. "He was outstanding," Queen said. "He got us out. I know we didn't have very good swings at him. I know we were too anxious a couple of times, swinging at first pitches." The Mavericks were behind on the scoreboard throughout the game. But Inland Empire starter Bobby Livingston was unable to hold onto the lead. With the Mavs down 5-4, Livingston's throwing error into centerfield on a Kennard Bibbs' sacrifice allowed Enrique Cruz to reach third with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. Callix Crabbe hit into a double play but Cruz was able to score and tie the game. The 66ers rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth inning as Erick Monzon led off the inning with a solo home run off Mavs reliever Dan Kolb. Inland Empire added two more runs and it appeared Livingston was going to escape with a win. But High Desert rallied for a fourth time in the game. With one out, Froilan Villanueva crushed a Livingston pitch off the center field scoreboard to narrow the gap to two runs. Mike Steele relieved Livingston and wasn't effective. Eure greeted Steele with a surprise bunt single. Troy Farnsworth struck out but Mario Mendez didn't let the 66ers reliever off the hook. He powered a Steele pitch the opposite way sending it over the right field fence to tie the game up at 8-8 and get Kolb off the hook. "Yeah, that gave us a chance to win it," Queen said. "When you have the opportunity, you have to take advantage of it. That's why your record is 10-20 in the second half." The Mavericks have now lost five straight after a promising start to the seven-game homestand in which they won the first two games. Inland Empire has won four in a row. The 66ers' sweep is the second for them against the Mavericks. In May, Inland Empire swept a four-game set from the Mavs at San Bernardino. It just so happens the Mavericks travel to Inland Empire today for another four-game series. NOTES: Villanueva with his double in the first inning, extended his hitting streak to 10 games. ... Ben Van Iderstine has a seven-game hitting streak after his two-out RBI single in the bottom of the second. ... The 66ers' Gary Harris broke the club record for triples in the season with his 14th in the top of the 12th inning. ... Inland Empire's Michael Garciaparra, younger brother of Boston's Nomar Garciaparra, reached base five times going 2-for-4 with a walk and getting hit twice. He had three RBIs and three runs scored. John Galayda/Staff Photographer The Mavs' Kennard Bibbs is congratulated by teammates after scoring a run in the bottom of the second inning on Sunday. http://www.vvdailypress.com/storypics2/072604_mavs.jpg
  25. High Desert Site Game Summary: A two-run double by Inland Empire 66er catcher Rene Rivera was pivotal in vaulting the Sixty Sixers to a 10-8 13-inning victory over the High Desert Mavericks before 1,283 at Mavericks Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Rivera had been mired in a horrific slump, in which the highly-touted catcher was three for his last 38. But with two runners on base, Rivera ripped a two-run two-bagger into the fun zone off reliever David Nolasco, scoring Carlos Arroyo and Matt Rogelstad. Melvin Pizarro came on in the bottom of the inning to retire the Mavericks in order for his sixth save on the season. The extra-inning affair, which is the longest game High Desert has played this year innings-wise, was preceded by a wild eighth inning. Inland Empire (16-14, 55-45) scored three to take an 8-5 lead, propelled by an Erick Monzon solo homer, and back-to-back RBI singles by Arroyo and Matt Rogelstad. High Desert (10-20, 35-65), who now drops their fifth game in a row, struck back in the bottom of the inning with two home runs. Froilan Villanueva, who extended his season-high hitting streak to 10 games with a single in the first, drilled a one-out solo dinger to left for his 10th homer of the season, drawing the Mavs within two. After Jeff Eure reached on an infield bunt single, Mario Mendez knotted the game up at eight apiece with an opposite-field two-run blast, his seventh round tripper of the year. Both teams began the game with a feverish offensive pace, combining for nine runs in the first two innings. Inland Empire jetted out to a 3-0 lead in the first off David Bradley, before the Mavs came back with two in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Travis Hinton and Villanueva?s single, enabling Hinton to score on a fielding error by left fielder Jon Nelson. Michael Garciaparra put Inland Empire up 5-2 in the second with a three-run bomb off Bradley, the first homer of the year for the brother of Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra, and only his third professional home run. The Mavs made it 5-4 in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles by Kennard Bibbs and Ben Van Iderstine, and tied it at 5-5 when Callix Crabbe grounded into a double play, but enabling Enrique Cruz to score from third with two out. Cesar Jimenez (5-5) got the win, evening his record on the year by styming the Mavericks with four scoreless innings of relief in the ninth through 12th inning. Nolasco (2-6) took the loss, while Melvin Pizarro picked up his sixth save. High Desert moves down the hill for four games against Inland Empire in San Bernardino, beginning on Monday night at 7:11 p.m. as Bo Hall (4-7) takes the mound for the Mavericks against Inland Empire ?s Greg Wear (1-1). The game can be heard live on radio at 910-AM and on the internet at www.hdmavs.com.
