High Desert Site Game Summary: ADELANTO, CA ? Froilan Villanueva?s RBI double to score Ralph Santana capped a wild weekend at Mavericks Stadium, as the Mavs took the rubber game of the three-game set from the Quakes, winning on Sunday by a score of 7-6 in 10 innings. Santana walked with one out, then raced around from first base to score the game-winning run, as the Mavs rallied for their third win in their last four games. Villanueva?s hit came off losing pitcher Cliff Smith (0-2), who allowed the Mavs to tie the game with an unearned run in the eighth inning. It was the first extra-inning win for High Desert this year. Tony Stavros (1-1) faced seven batters without allowing anyone to reach, to earn his first win as a Maverick. Starting pitcher Danny Kolb had his best outing of the year, but got a no-decision after 5.2 innings. Kolb allowed just two earned runs, while striking out a season-best six with only one walk. The Mavs took the early lead on Daryl Clark?s league-leading 12th homer of the year, a two-run shot to right field to put the Mavs up 2-0. After the Quakes got a run in the fourth, the Mavs added a pair of unearned runs off Quakes starter Dan Mozingo in the fifth for a 4-1 lead. The Quakes finally got to Kolb in the sixth, scoring three times to tie the game at 4-4. Kolb left leading 4-2 with two men on base, but Kenny Ray couldn?t hold the lead, as Derek Mann picked up a two-out hit to drive in a pair. The teams traded runs before the Quakes took a 6-5 lead in the eighth, as the second Mav error of the game allowed an unearned run to score. Daryl Clark?s RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the inning tied the game at 6-6. Clark now has 31 RBIs to lead the Cal League in that category as well! After an off-day on Monday, the Mavs will travel to San Bernardino to face the Inland Empire 66ers on Tuesday night. J.M. Gold makes his second start of the year as he throws for the Mavs. High Desert Box Score: Take away Tony Stavros' one hideous outing when he had an 11-run lead on a cold California night, and his ERA is well under 2.00; Daryl Clark on base four more times... David Weiser's comments on Saturday's action: NOTE: The Vipers are some sort of an Arena Football League team -- I had to look it up http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif A good crowd, considering the Tenn. Valley Vipers were home tonight, playing at the VBC and it was another Saturday night that turned chilly. People with pullover sweats, jackets, even with their hoods on....... It wasn't as bad as last Saturday, which was the cause for my malady, but I wasn't dressed for the north wind blowing in that erupted in the late innings, so I left after eight....... At that point, it was all over for Chattanooga. Matt Parker got out of a threat in the 8th after giving up a two-out walk and a double to Chris Haas in the 8th, but he struck out former Huntsville Star Creighton Gubanich to end the inning. Parker faced four batters in the 9th and picked up his 2nd save. There were no heroic catches, as in Friday night's affair. Dave Krynzel tried to make a diving catch on what turned out to be a bloop hit for Ray Olmedo, but he came up empty, loading the bases and setting up Chattanooga's 2nd run when Andrew Beattie hit a deep fly ball out to Cristian Guerrero. That was as close to an exciting situation as I saw tonight........ Pedro Liriano was in fine form, going full to hitters only four times tonight, leading to a pair of walks. His first, to lead off the game, resulted in the Lookouts' 1st run when Steve Smitherman hit a 2-out single through short and on into left, scoring Wilmy Caceres, who was re-obtained by the Reds last Tuesday........ Liriano has now given up just 2 ER in 12 1/3 innings in his last 2 starts....... For the Stars, it was their 6th win in 8 games and their 10th in 14 games. With a 17-11 record, the Stars are currently the most successful of the Brewers' four minor league affiliations. The Stars scored in the 2nd inning after Guerrero hit a grounder to Andrew Beattie at 2nd base. Beattie made the tag on incoming Brandon Gemoll, then hesitated to make the throw to first, giving him enough time to drop it anyway......... Guerrero would steal second, go to third on a fielder's choice, and score on a 2-1 wild pitch to Richard Paz......... In the 3rd, Ryan Knox hit a 2-out bloop double to shallow right field that chased Dernell Stenson back beyond the grass. The ball dropped in back of Stenson, and Knox, with his speed, slid easily into second. After stealing third, his league-leading 10th base, Knox scored on Krynzel's single to center, putting the Stars ahead for the first time in the game.......... Gemoll made it 3-1 in the 4th inning with a solo HR over the third tier Knology sign in right field, his 1st of the year. It was Gemoll's first hit in 10 at-bats against Chattanooga pitching this season........ Plagued by wildness in the 6th, Dustin Moseley walked the bases full, then walked Joel Alvarado, forcing in Krynzel who had singled to right to start the inning....... Alvarado was the 1st Huntsville player to walk four times in a 9-inning game since Scott Sollmann walked four times on July 24, 1999 --- against the Chattanooga Lookouts. Jeff Deardorff was the last player to walk four times in a game, but that was in that 18-inning marathon the Stars played last August 4 against, yeh, the Lookouts! Have you ever seen a 4-9 on your scorecard? It happened after Krynzel led off the 6th....... Chris Hart hit a skyscraper to right field that Guy Senjem must have had trouble tracking. The ball finally touched off his glove, only to fall into the glove of 2nd baseman Beattie, who got it just before it hit the ground. This night was the anniversary of Creighton Gubanich's debut in the majors with the Boston Red Sox in 1999. He would become one of four players in MLB history to hit a grand-slam HR as his first major league hit........ Thursday, he marked his return to Joe Davis Stadium by playing in his 1,000th minor league game. The Stars are now 9-0 this season on Fridays and Saturdays combined....... Ryan Knox is 3-for-17 since his 14-game hit streak ended, but tonight, he hit his 2nd double in as many days, doubling his total for the season....... Ben Hendrickson will make his first start since April 9 on May 11th........ Mickey Lopez has signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners. Lopez, one of the best from the Brewer era, played for the Stars from 1999-2000, is tied for 10th on the all-time stolen base list, and holds the club record for the longest hitting streak in a season. -

Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 8, High Desert 6 High Desert Site Game Summary: Quakes Win a Bizarre One 8-6ADELANTO, CA ? On a night where almost everything possible happened, the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes held on for a hard-earned 8-6 victory over the High Desert Mavericks on Saturday night at Mavericks Stadium. Saturday?s game featured a base runner getting hit with a ground ball, an umpire being hit two different times by ground balls, two men picked off base and a bench-clearing raucous that saw Mavs' first baseman Froilan Villanueva ejected. The Mavs trailed early, as Brian Mazone allowed a two-run home run to Jeff Mathis for a 2-0 lead in the first. Mazone would settle down over the next four scorless innings, working his best outing of the season. The Mavs got on the board in the second, as Scott Candelaria scored on an error by Quakes shortstop Tommy Murphy. The Mavs tied the game in the fourth, as Candeleria, who reached base on a ground ball that hit Jason Belcher on a potential hit-and-run, scored on Chris Morris? RBI double off winning pitcher Jake Woods (2-2). The Mavs took their only lead on the night in the fifth, as Johnny Raburn singled and scored on Villanueva?s RBI double. After Mazone left with a 3-2 advantage, David Nolasco (0-2) came in and failed to hold the lead. The Quakes scored four runs in the sixth, keyed by Nick Gorneault?s two-run, go-ahead single, to take a 6-3 lead. The Mavs got one in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-4, but the Quakes added two runs in the seventh off Justin Backsmeyer on run-scoring hits from Michael Napoli and Gorneault. Belcher?s second homer of the year, a two-run shot in the seventh, rounded out the scoring, pulling the Mavs to within 8-6. Jon Rouwenhorst worked the final two frames for his third save. The benches emptied in the top of the eighth, when Villanueva and Jason Coulie started to argue with Coulie on first. Villanueva pushed Coulie off the bag after a pickoff throw to first, which led to his ejection and the benches emptying. With the win, the Quakes take over first place at 17-11. The Mavs end their two-game winning streak with the loss. The Mavs and Quakes meet in the rubber game of the three-game set on Sunday at 3:05. Danny Kolb (0-2) faces Dan Mozingo (2-3) of the Quakes. Richmond (Braves) 5, Indianapolis 2 I listened to nearly all of this one while in the office today, which I admit, is unusual for an Indy game. The Indy announcers are very professional, but this squad only inspires so much excitement. If I'm not mistaken, all the Tribe's hits were singles, and no one was able to come up with a truly clutch hit. Buddie, Marquez, and Kolb pitched -- I tuned away late, but Marquez was effective in his first couple of innings back with the team. No new news on the player acquisition front. Indy Site Game Summary: RICHMOND, VA -- The Indianapolis Indians (9-18) dropped to 1-2 on the current eight-game road trip on Saturday afternoon, losing to the Richmond Braves (15-13) 5-2, despite out-hitting the Braves eight to six in the game. The Indians started the game much the same way as Friday night when the team scored nine runs in the first four innings against the Braves. Mark Budzinski singled to open the first inning, Bill Hall then sacrificed him to second and Pete Zoccolillo's single to right scored Budzinski. Mark Smith followed up Zoccolillo's single with a base hit to right field to put runners on first and second with only one out for Cody McKay. With an opportunity to break the game open, however, McKay grounded into an inning ending double play. The Tribe again threatened in the top of the second when Wilton Veras and Jason Conti both singled to start the frame, but came away empty handed as Braves starter John Ennis (2-1) retired the next three batters stranding Veras and Conti. The Braves tied up the ballgame with a run in the bottom of the second inning when Nick Green's single scored shortstop Stubby Clapp, who had been walked by Indians starter Mike Buddie (0-3) to leadoff the inning. Buddie then gave up two more runs in the third inning when Johnny Estrada's two-out, bases empty double was followed up by consecutive singles from Mike Hessman and Clapp. Buddie, making his first start since June 5, 2000, when he was with Columbus, pitched 3.0 innings allowing three runs on four hits to take the loss. He was relieved by the recently signed Rob Marquez, who pitched in 47 games with Indianapolis last season. Marquez pitched 3.0 innings allowing one hit and one run while striking out three in his 2003 Indians debut. Danny Kolb pitched the final two innings allowing one hit, an unearned run, and struck out four to lower his ERA on the season to 0.71. The final Indians' run came in the top of the sixth inning when Smith lead off with a single and later scored on Conti's sacrifice fly. Smith, with a 2-for-3 day, has now hit safely in six straight games, as well as 17 of his last 19 contests. Conti, meanwhile, is now 5-for-7 since being moved to the seventh spot in the batting order on Friday night. Ennis pitched 5.1 innings for Richmond to earn the win, allowing all eight of the Tribe's hits along with both runs. Travis Phelps, Bobby Jones, and Joe Dawley combined to shut down the Indians' bats over the final 3.2 innings, with Dawley earning his fifth save of the season. The Braves host the Indians once again on Sunday afternoon, in the finale of the four game series. Pascual Coco (1-4, 5.76) will pitch for Indianapolis and Ryan Glynn (1-2, 4.63) goes for Richmond. The Tribe will then travel to Norfolk to play four game series before returning to Indianapolis to host Buffalo on May 9 at 7 p.m. Indianapolis Box Score: Steve Scarborough now 6-for 56 (.107) with 3 BB's and 22 K's -- that's hard to fathom... Daily Press Article on RHP Jeff Robinson: ADELANTO ? Surgery-plagued High Desert pitcher Jeff Robinson is hoping to do something he hasn't done in a while ? make it through a full season healthy. The right-handed reliever had Tommy John surgery in 2001 on his right shoulder after pitching at High Desert. In the time since, Robinson rehabbed his shoulder, throwing for three different clubs within Milwaukee's organization, including one start with the Mavericks. "It feels pretty good," Robinson said of the shoulder. "I'm here trying to complete a season. I haven't made it through a full season yet. I'm trying to stay injury-free." The last time Robinson pitched a majority of a season was in 2000, when he went 5-8 for low Class A Beloit (Wis.). Robinson was placed on the High Desert roster after Spring Training, but wasn't shipped to Adelanto until this week when Pete Smart and Greg Schaub went on the disabled list. The Broussard, La. native was a seventh-round draft pick for Milwaukee when he came out of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette as a first baseman/pitcher. Robinson found out he was drafted in a way he'll never forget. He was on a bus with his Ragin' Cajuns teammates heading for the NCAA Super Regionals in 1999. "I got to the hotel and my dad called me to tell me I got drafted," Robinson said. "I didn't know what to expect. I hadn't thought about it much. I was pretty happy overall. "It's gone real good so far when I'm healthy. When I'm healthy, it's good. Other than that, it's a nightmare." -

High Desert Game Story: Michael Rothstein continues to get worthwhile quotes and analysis in his post-game interviews... www.vvdailypress.com/cgi-...635,39598, More Notes from Rothstein and the Press: Cautious with Casey Rancho Cucamonga first baseman Casey Kotchman punished High Desert the first series the two teams played this year at the Epicenter. Against Chris Saenz, he belted two home runs in two pitches. This time around, the Mavericks won't worry about seeing him. Kotchman strained his right hamstring in Thursday's game against Lake Elsinore running from second base to home. Quakes manager Bobby Meacham said the .323 hitter is day-to-day. Catcher Jeff Mathis was also out of Friday's lineup, but Meacham said he was given the day off. Promo promo promo High Desert is promoting more than a used-car salesman this weekend. Friday was 50-cent food night. Originally, some thought the rapper 50 Cent would make an appearance, but that didn't happen. Today is Milwaukee Brewers retro hat giveaway for the first 1,000 fans in the ballpark. Sunday is a Little League Clinic starting at 10 a.m. Kids can participate free with a ticket to Sunday's game against Rancho Cucamonga. Blackie's break High Desert manager Tim Blackwell will disappear for the rest of the Rancho Cucamonga series. Last month, Blackwell attended the wedding of his eldest daughter, Jana. This weekend, he'll be a guest at the graduation of his youngest daughter, Jaime, who is graduating from Cal Baptist. In other coaching news, pitching coach Bill Champion returned to the team Friday. -

Jim Callis at BA: Who do you think is the best all-around catcher in the 2003 draft? We're in the midst of canvassing the baseball world on this topic and several other draft-related issues. The consensus best all-around catcher is Jarrod Saltalamacchia from Royal Palm Beach (Fla.) High. Saltalamaccchia, who's 6-foot-4 and 195 pounds, is very athletic for a backstop. "As far as the total package," an American League scouting director said, "he's the guy." He has bat speed, arm strength and power potential. A Florida State signee, he hit .391-1-11 in 23 at-bats for third-place Team USA at the World Junior Championships last summer. Saltalamacchia projects as a second- or third-round pick, especially with the expected emphasis on college players in the 2003 draft. The best bet for a catcher going in the first round appears to be Toledo's Mitch Maier. Maier, who's 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds, also is very athletic for a catcher and saw time in the outfield in the Cape Cod League last summer. His hitting ability and offensive approach are his best attributes. Maier is having a huge year, batting .452-7-49 with 23 steals (in 26 attempts) through 39 games. His 27-7 walk-strikeout ratio has to have caught the eye of the Athletics, who pick 25th, 26th and 32nd. Though he has good tools behind the plate, he has thrown out just eight of 55 basestealers (15 percent).

From Jim Callis at Baseball America: What's the skinny on Daryl Clark? He was a prospect with Milwaukee a couple of years ago when he was at low Class A Beloit. He showed good power but poor walk/strikeout numbers. He also was error-prone at third base. He certainly has turned things around at high Class A High Desert this year. I'm guessing he's a bit old for that level, however. What can you tell me about his prospect status? Chris Collins Janesville, Wis. Clark didn't make our Brewers Top 30 list in our 2003 Prospect Handbook, though if he keeps this up he'll hit his way into the 2004 edition. A 17th-round pick in 2000 from UNC Charlotte, he's batting .374-11-27 through 27 games. The downside is that Clark is 23 and he's repeating the California League, where he batted .244-19-78 in 93 games last year. He's also playing in one of the best hitter's parks and hitter's leagues in the minors. So his onslaught alone doesn't make him a top prospect by any means. He is making more contact than he has in the past, striking out once every five plate appearances after fanning once every four in the past. Clark has been moved permanently to left field after making 87 errors in 214 games at the hot corner. Has he improved his prospect status with his hot opening month? No doubt. But it's hard to get excited about him until he shows he can keep mashing at higher levels. -

David Weiser's Huntsville Update: Ben Hendrickson news included... KRYNZEL SAVES THE DAYAnyone at all, casting a doubt whether Mike Jones belongs in Double-A, let it be silenced here and forever more after tonight....... Jonesy's performance, I'm sure made not just all us Stars fans here in Huntsville proud tonight, but I'm sure Brewer fans across the U.S. and the whole management team responsible for his signing and development and their decision to bump him up from Beloit this year...... Not since Luis Martinez's 5 no-hit inning, 11 K performance on April 5, has a pitcher so dominated a game. Jones permitted just one batter past first all night....... It will probably go on my top 10 list, when I speak before the Booster Club again near the end of the season........ But there were some other moments that will be remembered. However, the Stars had to deal with a pitcher casting his own spell, tonight. They wound up striking out a season-high 15 times tonight....... Ryan Mottl, who won 28 games climbing the Class A ladder the past two seasons, would fan 10 batters, a season-high by an opposing pitcher, so it was good they got to him when they did....... After Ryan Knox led off the with a rare double (only his 3rd in 104 at-bats), he took third on a sac bunt by Dave Krynzel........ The Lookouts elected to retire Corey Hart on his grounder to third, allowing the speedy Knox to score....... Ordinarily the right strategic move to make, the run made all the difference, as both pitchers dueled each other, until Mottl tired out after throwing 107 pitches after six........ Jones, however, was more economical. He could've gone the distance if it was in Mgr. Frank Kremblas's hands......... After five innings, Jonesy threw just 56 pitches, 40 for strikes, averaging a little over 11 pitches/frame. In the end, Jones left after 77 pitches, 56 of them for strikes. Yep, that's right......... He retired the first eight hitters to face him, gave up an infield single to Mottl, then retired another eleven. A game like this needed spotless defense from two teams that weren't accustomed to giving such, but as it turned out, it was the first game the Stars have played this season in which both teams were spotless in the field, and for the Stars, it went beyond spotless........ Cristian Guerrero saved the game from being tied in the 6th inning, when leadoff hitter Dernell Stenson hit a bomb to the right field corner that looked like it had the distance. Guerrero, with good speed and thankfully good height, raced back to the wall and made a vaulting catch off the top of the Burger King sign....... No one was sure whether Guerrero came up with the ball until his gloved hand came over the other side, with the ball gingerly in the webbing of his glove........ Then in the 9th, with Matt Childers trying to record his first save since his record-breaking month of July 2002, Krynzel saved the day........ With Chris Haas on first and one out, Steve Smitherman launced a searing line-drive to right center. Krynzel fled deep into the alley and made a leaping catch at the wall to take away an extra-base away. That surely would have scored Haas, spoiling an absolutely beautifully-pitched game, but that wasn't all! Haas had already rounded second. Krynzel had enough time and enough on the ball to make a javelin throw to 1st base, completing a spectacular, game-saving double play........ And where were you tonight?....... Stars general manager Bryan Dingo said, "Krynzel's catch is the best I've ever see at Joe Davis Stadium." Dingo, by the way, has been an employee of the Stars since 1994. This was the Stars' 5th shutout of the season, the 3rd by a 1-0 score......... Makes you think of the Koufax-Drysdale Dodger teams of the mid-60s........ The Stars are now 16-11 with a 3-game edge over the slumping Diamond Jaxx. Best start since 1999, when they were 17-10. Let's not count our chickens, though. They were in first place, then wound up having to face the Diamond Jaxx in a playoff game, which they lost........ A good night for the farm. Everyone in the Brewer organization won Friday night........ Huntsville sends Pedro Liriano (1-3, 3.62) to the mound against Dustin Moseley (2-0, 2.18), Saturday night. Kids coming early to the park get a foam baseball, sponsored by Boeing........ Moseley is the ace of this Chattanooga staff that is last in the SL in ERA. Chattanooga, however, has two of the top three pitching prospects in the organization, and Moseley is #5....... The Stars, with a team ERA of 2.90, rank 3rd in the league......... Mike Jones is now tied with Mobile's Chris Rojas for 2nd in strikeouts with 18........ Ben Hendrickson will make his first start since April 9, on May 11th........ Mickey Lopez has signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners. Lopez, one of the best from the Brewer era, played for the Stars from 1999-2000, is tied for 10th on the all-time stolen base list, and holds the club record for the longest hitting streak in a seaosn......... The Indianapolis Indians roster was at 19, sparking fear that they might call one of our guys up, but they just acquired independent pitcher Robert Marquez and former Diamond Jaxx pitcher, Nate Teut. They're still short, though. Huntsville Times Game Story: Not much more than a quick quote or two, really... www.al.com/stars/huntsvil...131270.xml -

Indianapolis 9, Richmond (Braves) 2 Indy Site Game Summary: RICHMOND, Virginia -- The Indianapolis Indians (9-17), who entered play at Richmond on Friday night with a team batting average of .209, exploded for nine runs on ten hits in the first four innings alone to defeat the Richmond Braves (14-13) by a score of 9-2. The Tribe's 14-hit outburst snapped both a four-game Indians losing streak and a five-game Braves winning streak. Mark Smith continued his hot hitting with a two-run blast over the left field wall in the top of the first inning to give the Indians an early 2-0 lead for David Manning (1-0), who got the victory for the Tribe making only his second start of the year. Manning, who lasted only 3.1 innings in his first start, pitched 7.0 innings on Friday allowing only five hits and one run while walking two and striking out seven to earn his first win of the season. The Tribe added to the early lead in the third as Mark Budzinski started the inning with a single and Bill Hall followed with a walk to put runners on first and second for Pete Zoccolillo, who one-hopped a double off the fence in left-center field scoring Budzinski and Hall. After consecutive groundouts by Smith and Cody McKay, Wilton Veras dropped a single into right to score Zoccolillo from third before Veras was thrown out at second attempting to stretch the hit into a double. Zoccolillo's run increased the Tribe's lead to 5-0. Richmond threatened in the bottom of the third inning when Marquis led off with a broken-bat double and Donzell McDonald blooped a single into left field to put runners on first and second with no outs. Manning quickly ended the threat by striking out Wilson Betemit before getting Bo Porter to ground into a double play to end the inning. The early onslaught by Indianapolis continued in the fourth as Jason Conti (3-for-4) hit the first pitch of the inning out of the park for his third home run of the season to increase the lead to 6-0. Steve Scarborough followed Conti with a single, and was sacrificed to second by Manning before being driven in on a single by Budzinski (3-for-5), which ended Marquis' day after only 3.1 innings pitched. Marquis' replacement, Derrick Lewis, fared no better. The first batter to face Lewis was Bill Hall, who greeted Lewis by hitting the third home run of the game for Indianapolis to straight-away centerfield. Hall's first home run of the season increased the Tribe's lead to 9-0. Hall finished the day 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. "I've been feeling good in batting practice," said Hall. "I knew it was a matter of time before things starting going well in the games." Richmond scored one run in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of an RBI groundout by Jesse Garcia that scored Damon Hollins who had previously tripled. The final tally for the Braves came in the ninth inning when two Wilton Veras errors allowed Hollins to cross the plate with an unearned run charged to Tribe reliever Roberto Giron. With the win, the Indians improved to 1-1 on the current eight-game road trip that includes two more games in Richmond before moving on to Norfolk for a four-game series. On Saturday, the Indians will send Mike Buddie (0-2, 3.78) to the mound for his first start of the season to face Richmond's John Ennis (1-1, 4.76) in an afternoon contest. It's Buddie's first start since June 5, 2000 when he was with Columbus. Since then he's made 155 relief appearances including eight this season. Buddie was a starter from 1992-96. From Indyindians.com: ROSTER MOVES: The Indians have added righthanded reliever Robert Marquez and lefthander Nate Teut. Marquez was with Somerset in the independent Atlantic League, but had not pitched yet this season (season started Thursday). Marquez was second on the Indians last season with 47 relief appearances. He went 4-7 with a 3.82 ERA and 8 saves. Teut had combined to go 0-4 with a 9.50 ERA in five starts between Albuquerque and Iowa (Marlins and Cubs organizations). Look for squarepusher to add Teut to the Transaction Archive and the Player Index later on this evening. Thanks, Brian, as I'll be away for a bit.
