Here's the Indianapolis Press Release on Jim Rushford's return: www.indyindians.com/press..._1503.html Expect Rushford to see quite a bit of time at first base. Infielder Scott Seabol was released from the Indy roster to make room for Rushford. Seabol, who will be 28 on Saturday, hit .235 with a .560 OPS in 81 AB's, playing mostly first base, with some third base and outfield as well. -

This is for all the die-hard followers of the Brewers? Summer Latin Leagues, and for squarepusher, who I hope will process the transactions within the Brewerfan Player Index database for me later today/tonight http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif . Five young Venezuealan prospects who were originally assigned to the Brewers? Arizona Rookie League team upon signing their initial contracts have been re-assigned to the Brewers? Venezuelan Summer League. This shortens up the roster of the Arizona squad prior to the June amateur draft. Sent to the VSL: RHP?s Miguel Ochoa and Juan Garrido C Yonnata Lopez OF Joel Guaimaro IF Jose Rodriguez In addition, five players have been assigned to the Dominican Summer League from the Venezuelan Summer League: LHP?s Luis Camacho, Cesar Ibarra, and Luis Mendoza C Jose Leon OF Julio Arriete Three players go the other route, from the DSL to the VSL: RHP Greg Millan Norberto Uzcategui Robinsson Zerpa For a few of these players, we don?t have age info, position info, etc. Brian (squarepusher) is normally good at tracking the roster information down once the latin summer seasons begin. Since the Brewers don?t carry information on these players in their media guide or web site, Brewerfan is among the only sources (in English, anyway http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ) for you to find information on the next Valerio De Los Santos or Luis Martinez (who pitched in 11 games in his only DSL season in 1997). Finally, two 18-year old RHP?s from Venezuela were released by the Brewers: Erick Gori, who pitched in the VSL last year Geovani Rodriguez, who saw VSL action in 2001 and 2002 Toby could probably confirm, but it seems that the DSL is considered by the Brewers to be a more advanced league. For information on all the players still in the Brewers? system, you only need to click on their name within the roster page of each team?s section here at Brewerfan. -

Today?s Menu allows you to focus on your Ben Sheets / Kerry Wood matinee, and then take in an audio double-dip of Huntsville / High Desert action; I should be able to catch the early Indianapolis action listening to the local Rhode Island station while driving around town tonight?. All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio available approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed; no Beloit audio again tonight? INDIANAPOLIS: RHP Jayson Durocher will get in his rehab inning or two prior to LHP Nate Teut taking the mound vs. Pawtucket (Red Sox) at home, 7:00 PM HUNTSVILLE: Don?t worry, Brewer fans, RHP Mike Jones will take out our Cub frustrations on their AA franchise when the Stars visit West Tennessee, 6:35 PM HIGH DESERT: It?s RHP Dan Kolb vs. Lake Elsinore (Padres) at home, 9:05 PM BELOIT: Southpaws go back to back when 21-year-old Jeff Housman and 20-year-old Manny Parra face South Bend (Diamondabcks) in a doubleheader at home, beginning at 5:30 PM. I know FanFest is this weekend, but why wait? Where are the first-hand Snapper reports from the local Brewerfan faithful?!? -

From Beloit: Snappers activated INF Josh Murray off the disabled list effective today. RHP Khalid Ballouli was placed on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain, also effective today, 5/14. We'll try to get some injury updates on other fronts as well. Beloit RHP Jason Baker made two spot starts early on, but has been sidelined since, without technically going on the DL. It also would be nice to get updates on Snapper RHP Jon Steitz (On the DL), and hopefully David Weiser will have more for us on RHP's Ben Diggins and Matt Hammons in his Friday report. We did learn that LHP Justin Gordon is OK (leg strain), and is scheduled to start one of the games in High Desert's doubleheader on Friday the 16th. -

Texas released outfielder Jim Rushford from AAA Oklahoma, who was struggling, hitting .190/.271/.262 in 84 at-bats. Nice scoop, MavsWinn, as apparently Rushford is on his way to Indy to perhaps recapture some of the magic of the past two years. A perfect example of why a player should never burn any bridges when he leaves an organization; you never know when you might need to return. No word yet on any corresponding move to make room on the Indianapolis roster. -

Lake Elsinore (Padres) 8, High Desert 3 High Desert Site Game Summary: ADELANTO, CA ? Three runs in the ninth inning broke open a close game as the Lake Elsinore Storm held on to beat the High Desert Mavericks by a final of 8-3, on Wednesday night at Mavericks Stadium. Just one night earlier, the Storm blew an eighth-inning lead, dropping their first game of the year when leading after seven innings. On Wednesday, there was no rally, as the Lake Elsinore bullpen kept the Mavs off the scoreboard. Kevin Beavers, Jack Cassel and Mike Wodnicki combined to throw four innings of shutout relief. After the Mavs took the lead 1-0 in the first on a Mark Ernster RBI single, the Storm scored the next three runs. The Storm got an unearned run off Mavs starter Brian Mazone (0-3) in the second, as Josh Carter scored on a Nick Trzesniak fielder?s choice to tie the game at 1-1. Lake Elsinore added two in the fourth, as Trzesniak again knocked in Carter with an RBI double. Trzesniak would then scored on a Jason Clements RBI single to make it 3-1. The Mavs got one back in the fourth, as Todd West?s ground ball scored Scott Candelaria from third. The teams traded runs in the sixth, as Carter homered for the third time this season, a solo shot, to make it 4-2. The Mavs made it 4-3 in their half of the sixth, as Jason Belcher scored on a Candelaria groundout. The Storm added a run in the eighth off David Nolasco, and then three more in the ninth to put it away. Josh Barfield knocked in his league-leading 42nd RBI of the year in the ninth. In the most unusual stat of the night, the Storm pitching staff didn?t strike out a single hitter, while the Mavs pitching staff only walked one man. It didn?t help, as the Mavs lost for the ninth time in 13 meetings with the Storm. The Mavs finish the series with the Storm on Thursday at Mavericks Stadium, be sending Danny Kolb (1-2) to the hill against Mike Thompson (3-2) of the Storm, at 7:05 (9:05 Central). High Desert Box Score: Well, the Mavs are certainly scrapping with 11 hits Wednesday, with a short bench and all; Cristian Guerrero gone, Brian Foster's thumb healing, Froilan Villanueva in the midst of his three-game suspension, just not enough to win this night... Indianapolis 11, Pawtucket (Red Sox) 4 Indy Site Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians tied a season high with 11 runs Wednesday afternoon as they beat the Pawtucket Red Sox 11-4 for their second straight win. The Tribe (15-23) fell behind 2-0 in the first, but scored four times in both the second and third innings to take an 8-2 lead. A three-run fifth stretched the margin to 11-2. With one out in the second, the Indians loaded the bases on singles by Pete Zoccolillo and Cody McKay and a walk by Keith Luuloa. Wilton Veras singled in the first run before Steve Scarborough cleared the bases with a double to the gap in left-center putting the Indians in the lead for good. After sending eight men to the plate in the second, the Indians batted around in the third. Luuloa doubled home a run, and McKay doubled home two runs. A fourth run scored on the first of four Pawtucket errors. McKay finished 3-for-4 with two RBI as the bottom half of the Indians lineup collected seven of the team?s 11 hits. All eight runs came off Pawtucket starter Dicky Gonzalez who falls to 2-3. Tribe starter Pasqual Coco (3-4) earned the win with five innings of work. After giving up two runs on four hits in the first, Coco shut out the PawSox (20-16) on five hits over the next four frames. Travis Miller, Jason Childers and Dan Kolb all worked in relief for the Indians. Pawtucket, which pounded out 15 hits, scored two runs in the ninth. The series continues Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Victory Field. Indianapolis Box Score: Listened to most of this one; the Pawsox didn't do much right except strand batters -- meaning they played miserably, despite outhitting the Tribe; Coco was only sharp once he had to bear down each inning -- that's better than nothing... The Brewers exposed High Desert OF Cristian Guerrero to waivers, apparently to free up a 40-man roster spot. He almost cleared, getting snagged by Seattle. He'll stay in the California League for now, assigned to Inland Empire (San Bernadino). High Desert can't catch a break. Their outfield situation is thin to begin with, not in terms of talent so much, but just in bodies. It'll be plenty of Belcher, Morris, and Boyd for now, and Johnny Raburn better keep his OF glove handy. Nobody at Beloit (Hinton, Bibbs, Moss, Carter, Mendez) seems a likely candidate for promotion at the moment. In other news, RHP J.M. Gold has landed back on the disabled list (and the Brewers chose to expose Guerrero?). Anyway, that move will allow SS Ozzie Chavez to fill that roster spot shortly; of course, the Guerrero replacement is still pending. -
Indianapolis Media Notes for Wednesday: TODAY: The Indians continue an eight-game homestand with the second game of a four-game series with Pawtucket. The Indians went 1-3 against Buffalo to open the homestand and were outscored 30-20 in the series. This is the second of eight contests between the Indians and the PawSox. Last year, the Indians won five of the eight games including three of four played at Victory Field. The Indians have won the season series from Pawtucket in two of the five years (2002 & 1998) since the Tribe joined the IL in 1998. Former Indians Kevin Tolar (1998-99) and Lou Collier (2000-01) are on the PawSox roster. Collier leads the league in RBI. The Indians have scored five or more runs in seven of the last eight games going 4-4 in that span. The Indians have scored 49 runs (6.1 rpg) and are hitting .305 (84-for-275) in those games. The Tribe opposition has scored 43 runs and is hitting .261 (75-for-287) over the last eight games. YESTERDAY: The Indians beat Pawtucket 7-2. Dave Burba earned the win with seven innings of work. He allowed two runs while striking out seven. Bill Hall turned in his first four-hit performance at the Triple-A level. He scored twice and drove in two runs. Keith Luuloa added a two-run homer. Mark Smith's 14-game hitting streak ended as he went 0-for-3 with a walk. ON THE MOUND: Righthander Pasqual Coco makes his seventh start. Coco has been been victimized by big innings in five of his seven starts. He's allowed a three-run inning in two of his starts (7th inning on 4/29 and 2nd inning on 4/17), four-run innings in two of his starts (3rd inning on 5/9, 5th inning on 4/22) and a six-run inning (4th) on April 6. In his other two starts, he has allowed just two runs in 11.1 innings. Coco is coming off a no-decision against Buffalo last Friday when he gave up five runs in four innings. DUROCHER ON REHAB: RHP Jayson Durocher has joined the Indians on a rehab assignment. Durocher underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow to remove bone spurs on March 8. Durocher started Tuesday and needed just nine pitches to retire Pawtucket in order. He recorded two strikeouts. He is scheduled to start and pitch one inning on Thursday. HITTING STREAK ENDS AT 14: Mark Smith's 14-game hitting streak was snapped Tuesday with an 0-for-3 performance. The streak was the fourth-longest in the IL this season. Smith leads the Indians with a .333 average, 17 RBI and 10 multi-hit games. He was the Indians Player of the Month for April. Smith has hit safely in 25 of his last 28 games (.346, 36-for-104). The longest hitting streak last season was 17 games by Ryan Thompson from April 5-23. HOT AT THE PLATE: The Indians are hitting .287 in May and have scored 66 runs (5.1 rpg). Bill Hall leads the team with a .404 average, 13 runs, 21 hits and 10 RBI. Keith Luuloa is hitting .382 and is tied with Jason Conti (.340) for the team lead with three home runs. Mark Smith is batting .326. 'KOLB' AS ICE: Opponents are hitting a frigid .175 against Tribe reliever Dan Kolb. Kolb has recorded a 0.48 ERA in 14 games allowing one earned run in 18.2 innings. Kolb has struck out 15 batters in his last 10.0 innings (6 G). ON THE BOARD EARLY: The Indians have scored a team-best 25 runs in the first inning. The Tribe has plated a first-inning run in 13 games this season, but is just 6-7 in those games. The ninth inning is the only inning in which the Indians have not scored in double figures (6). The Indians have scored just 28 runs over the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. LONG BALL PROBLEMS: The Indians have hit 22 home runs which ranks 12th in the IL while the pitching staff has surrendered a league-high 39 long balls. The Tribe has been outhomered 15-11 at Victory Field. Pawtucket boasts opposite totals. The Paw Sox offense is tied for the league lead with 38 round trippers while the pitching staff has surrendered a league-low 14. UPCOMING PROBABLES: Thursday vs. Pawtucket - RHP Ryan Rupe (3-1, 1.91) vs. RHP Jayson Durocher (0-0, 0.00) / LHP Nate Teut (1-1, 3.97) Friday vs. Pawtucket - RHP Bronson Arroyo (4-1, 3.57) vs. RHP Francisco Campos (2-4, 5.72)

We all know that Mike Jones is hot, but we like to point out when national recognition is given, as SportsTicker does today: Huntsville (MIL) righthander Mike Jones has strung together 21 consecutive scoreless innings. After yielding a home run to the first batter he faced on April 27, the 20-year-old Jones has allowed only eight hits to the 79 batters he's faced since. Jones, the 12th player taken in the 2001 draft, gave up only two hits over eight scoreless innings on May 10 to lower his ERA to 2.43. After posting a 3.12 ERA and 132 strikeouts in 139 innings in lower level Class A Midwest League last year, Jones skipped over advanced Class A High Desert and was seventh in the Southern League in ERA through May 12. -

David Weiser's Huntsville Update: DUEL IN THE SUNDay baseball....... I love day baseball........ Usually that feeling isn't shared in Huntsville where you'll find so many one-dimensional sports fans, but today's Businessman's Special drew the largest mid-week afternoon crowd since June 16, 1999 when over 4,200 came through the turnstiles for a game against the Diamond Jaxx, whom we were in a race with for 1st place in the waning days of the first half........ Most of them were kids who were given the day off by the school system for their attendance record, their grades, or whatever. Some came from as far as Morgan County. While they were having more fun crowding the concession lines than watching the game, I was less oblivious to the fact that this was one grand pitching duel and that was to be expected........ Danny Haren, the league's ERA leader and #1 prospect in the Cardinal organization was facing off against the Stars' hot Dominican righthander, Pedro Liriano, who had given up just 2 runs in his last 17 1/3 innings over his last three starts....... Both teams --- hot. Both pitchers --- hot! Huntsville hitters are probably delighted to fatten up their batting averages now that they are done for awhile with the Smokies......... The Diamond Jaxx pitching staff (4.33 ERA) will look like BP pitching in comparison. Tuesday, the D'Jaxx gave up 23 hits to the Barons in a 12-inning, 7-6 loss......... Smokie pitchers held the Stars to a .150 average in this series, the first 4-game series the Stars have lost this year. The Stars were able to get just 4 runs on 17 hits in 35 innings, while striking out 32 times and being shutout twice. It was the first time since April 2001 that the Smokies shutout the Stars twice in a series........ During one overpowering stretch today from the 1st through the 3rd innings, Danny Haren struck out 6 of 7 batters, and had 9 Ks through 4 frames, all the while displaying major league-level control........ Haren's only walk --- that to pinch-hitter Chris Cosbey ---- came in the 5th when the Stars threatened for the only time in the game......... Richard Paz and Ryan Gripp led off with back-to-back singles through the infield. Mike Kremblas then placed a bunt to the third base side to move the runners into scoring position. Cosbey then ran the count full before Haren, who had issued only 5 free passes in 48 innings all season, gave him the free ticket to load the bases........ But with one out, Ryan Knox struck out on a 1-2 pitch and Dave Krynzel pounded a ball on the ground to former Stars' 1st baseman Bucky Jacobsen to end the inning. After that inning, Smokie pitchers retired 12 of the next 13 Stars hitters. The Smokies scored their only run off hard-luck loser Derek Lee........ In the 7th, Yadier Molina and John Nelsonhit back-to-back singles. Danny Haren dropped a bunt, but Lee quickly and cleanly fielded it and forced Molina at third........ Skip Schumaker then hit a grounder to Brandon Gemoll, who forced Haren at second. With runners on the corners and two out, .341-hitting Caonabo Cosme hit a double inside the right field line, his league-leading 18th of the season....... Nelson scored easily to break the scoreless affair, but Cosme did not see Schumaker hold up at third. Schumaker saw him coming and broke for the plate, and was retired in a rundown, ending the inning, but in a pitching match-up like this, one run may have been --- and was the difference in the game........ Cosme, 6th among SL batting leaders, was a former Oakland prospect during the years the Stars were affiliated with the A's. He was signed very young out of the Dominican and played an apprenticeship of 539 games in Class A, hitting .247, before moving up to Class AA-Midland in 2001. High Desert 6, Lake Elsinore (Padres) 3 High Desert Site Game Summary: ADELANTO, CA ? Ralph Santana?s two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth inning, snapped a 3-3 tie, helping the High Desert Mavericks win a much-needed 6-3 victory over the Lake Elsinore Storm. With the Mavs dropping the series-opener on Monday night by a score of 12-2, Lake Elsinore looked to drop the Mavs for a fifth straight time, head-to-head. Strong pitching and timely hitting allowed the Mavs to close to within five games of first place and four games of .500 at 17-21. High Desert has won nine of their last 12 games. Dan Hall was rolling through the first four frames, holding the Storm scoreless as the Mavs held a 2-0 lead. Marcus Nettles? two-out triple knocked in a run to make it 2-1 in the fifth. J.J. Furmaniak then hit his fourth home run in two games, a monstrous shot to left field for a 3-2 Storm lead. The Mavs had opportunities to tie the game but failed to score a runner from third with one out in the seventh inning. Cristian Guerrero?s leadoff triple to left field in the bottom of the eighth would not go wasted though, as Scott Candelaria knocked him in to tie the game at 3-3. After Chris Morris reached on a throwing error, both he and Candelaria would score on Santana?s two-run triple down the left-field line. Santana would score on a Todd West single as the Mavs added a run for a 6-3 lead. Aaron Dean, (3-2) who had his best outing in relief, gave way to Bobby Bystrowski after three innings of scoreless relief. Bystrowski worked a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out Joseph Hastings looking to end it. For Bystrowski, it was his team-leading ninth save of the year. Johnny Raburn finished the game 4-5 with two runs scored and two stolen bases, to lead the Mavericks. Raburn scored a run in the first when Guerrero singled him in for a 1-0 lead. Raburn would score in the third on a Mark Ernster sac fly. The Mavericks were 0-17 when trailing after seven innings coming into Tuesday night's game. Lake Elsinore was 17-0 when leading after seven innings. The Mavs look to gain more ground, as they send Brian Mazone (0-2) to the hill against Jason Wiedmeyer (2-0) of the Storm on Wednesday night at Mavericks Stadium. High Desert Box Score from BA: Manager Tim Blackwell is ultra--agressive on the basepaths, but this team easily has the speed to pull it off; it's been 7 or 8 games since the Mavericks have homered; CF Chris Morris back in the line-up; Froilan Villanueva finally begins his 3-day suspension for shoving an opposing player; Mavs' pitchers strike out 14, walk only one -- yes! Indianapolis 7, Pawtucket (Red Sox) 2 Bill Hall is simply smoking in May! Only at .257 now, but when you consider where he was just a couple of weeks back... Indy Site Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- Bill Hall pounded out four hits and Keith Luuloa blasted a two-run homer as the Indianapolis Indians (14-23) defeated the Pawtucket Red Sox 7-2 Tuesday night at Victory Field. Dave Burba picked up his first victory in an Indianapolis uniform making a rare relief performance. Burba, 2-3 overall, pitched a season-high seven innings striking out seven to earn the victory for the Tribe in relief of Jayson Durocher, who made a one-inning start on a rehabilitation assignment for the Milwaukee Brewers. Durocher pitched a 1-2-3 first inning striking out two PawSox (20-15) on only nine pitches, but was taken out of the game as planned and relieved by Burba. Burba surrendered an RBI double to Andy Abad in the fourth inning which cut the Tribe lead to 2-1, but then retired 12 of the next 13 Pawtucket hitters before allowing a lead-off double to Bill Haselman in the eighth. The Indians rapped out 11 base hits in the contest, and jumped on PawSox starter Chris Elmore (1-1) from the very beginning by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Hall, who was 4-for-4, doubled home Joe Lawrence and then scored on Mark Smith's RBI groundout later in the frame. For Hall it was the first four-hit game of his Triple-A career, and first since August 19, 2001, when he played at Double-A Huntsville. Luuloa's homer in the fourth inning made it 4-1 Indians. The Tribe added three runs in the fifth with Hall singling in a run and scoring. Smith came into the game with a 14-game hitting streak, which was the longest active streak in the International League, but finished 0-for-3. The teams continue the series Wednesday with a 2 p.m. Business Day Special.
