  2. David Weiser's Huntsville Update: SING HITS SOUR NOTEEverything looked like the Stars had Instant Karma tonight, but Brandon Sing had them singing the blues instead....... When it looked like the Stars' 2-1 lead was about to be erased in the 5th inning by a single to left, the Stars won an appeal call that erased the tying run. Jon Hamilton had missed the bag turning the corner at third and eagle-eyed manager Frank Kremblas called it to the attention of home plate umpire John Woods. He won the appeal and Diamond Jaxx manager Bobby Dickerson, furious at the call, got the boot...... In the 8th, pesky Ray Sadler (5-for-7 vs. the Stars) hit a leadoff double --- then was picked off on a throw from Kade Johnson....... Even though Ryan Miller walked the next hitter, Jon Hamilton, he was erased when Brendan Harris lined to Richard Paz for a double play........ But just like Yogi says, it's not over till it's over. With two out in the 9th, Mike Adams' 1-1 pitch to Brandon Sing was plastered to left and with the wind blowing out, it sailed over the fence for a game-winning two-run HR....... With that sudden turn of events, the Stars lost their 4th game of their last 6, but still hold on to their 3-game lead over Birmingham......... It was also the first time the Stars have lost on a Friday this season. They are now 5-1. It was the last day of the week that the Stars have managed to stay undefeated. The Stars hadn't lost on a 9th inning homer this year, but they had lost a pair of extra-inning games on a last at-bat HR. One of those games was the 15-inning, 4-3 loss to Orlando. It was Adams who gave up that blow to Jonny Gomes on April 14 at the Mouse House........ Adams has now blown 4 saves in his 8 opportunities and given up 5 HRs in 23 IP. He's averaged one in every 8 innings in his career, so this year alone, he's almost doubled that rate....... He's had a disappointing start after being promoted three times last year. Batting coach Sandy Guerrero said after the game, "They'll bounce back.... They'll put up a seven-spot tomorrow......" If they do, it will break a slump. The Stars have hit just .202 in their last six games. Ryan Knox has been holding up the offense during the soft spell (7-for-21 w/3 BBs) and has hit 5 doubles this month....... J.J. Hardy is 4-for-6 between mandated rests, but everyone else is looking sick....... It goes down after Corey Hart's .238 (5-for-21, 2 RBIs)...... Dave Krynzel is 4-for-20, Paz is 4-for-21 (.190), Chris Barnwell is 2-for-14, and Brandon Gemoll is 3-for-22. However, he has driven in 4 runs in his last 6 games........ The newly-acquired tandem of Daryl Clark and Kade Johnson are a combined 2-for-25 with 0 RBIs....... Hart has 10 Ks in 49 ABs this month and has walked only once. Matt Parker has done a fine job in long relief this month, throwing 12 innings without giving up an earned run. He gave up his first run tonight on Hart's throw that sailed over the head of Gemoll, allowing Ray Sadler, who doubled, to score in the 3rd inning....... Barnwell made a great defensive effort in the 2nd when Jason Dubois hit a grounder in the hole on the left side. Barney slid in the grass to make the stop, got up and threw to first and nearly got Dubois, who got the infield single. Jim Rushford returned to the Indianapolis lineup Friday night against Pawtucket, but went 0-for-3.........The Indians released infielder Scott Seabol, who thought he would get more playing time with the retirement of Lee Stevens, but Indy had to make room for Rushford........ Rushford hit .342 for the Stars in 57 games after a promotion from High Desert in 2001.

  5. Indy Site Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- Julio Zuleta belted a grand slam home run and a game-winning single in the ninth inning as the Pawtucket Red Sox overcame six errors and a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Indianapolis Indians 6-5 Friday night at Victory Field. The Tribe (15-25) scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning off PawSox starter Bronson Arroyo, two of those runs coming courtesy of Pete Zoccolillo's single to right field scoring Jason Conti and Mark Smith. It was the second straight night the Indians took the lead with runs in the first, but failed to win the game. Pawtucket (22-16) struck back in a big way in the top of the fourth inning when the team loaded the bases against Indians starter Travis Miller. Reliever Rob Marquez was brought on to face Zuleta with two outs, and on a 1-2 pitch Zuleta blasted Marquez's offering over the left field wall for a grand slam to give the PawSox a 4-3 advantage. Zuleta's ninth homer of the season put him in a tie for the International League lead. Pawtucket added to their lead in the top of the seventh inning when Andy Abad homered off Jason Childers with one out and none on to extend the lead to 5-3. The Tribe tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Smith tripled off the top of the left field wall driving in Mark Budzinski and Bill Hall. After both teams were held scoreless in the eighth inning, Shane Nance was brought in to face the PawSox in the top of the ninth. Nance (0-4) allowed a leadoff single to Adrian Brown who went to third on two ground outs. Zuleta delivered a sharp single to left driving in Brown with the winning run. For Zuleta, it was his fifth RBI of the night. Rudy Seanez pitched around a two-out error in the bottom of the ninth to earn his first save of the season. Kevin Tolar (2-0), who pitched 1.2 innings of hitless relief following Smith's triple earned the victory. The Indians travel to Buffalo on Saturday to kickoff an eight-game, nine-day road trip. David Manning (2-0, 2.03) will take the mound against Buffalo's Jason Bere (0-0, 1.13) Saturday at 6:05 pm.

  14. Indianapolis Media Notes for Friday: A bit repetitive, yes, although I do cut if a note hasn't changed from one previously posted... TONIGHT: The Indians wrap-up their first eight-game homestand of the season. The Tribe needs a win tonight to finish the stand with a .500 mark. The Indians dropped three of four to Buffalo, but have won two of three against Pawtucket. The Indians have scored five or more runs in nine of the last 10 games going 5-5 in that span. The Indians have scored 65 runs (6.5 rpg) and are hitting .296 (102-for-345) in those games. The Tribe opposition has scored 53 runs and is hitting .271 (98-for-362) over the last 10 games. The Tribe's team batting average has risen to .242 and no longer ranks last in the IL. This marks the first time since the first week of the season that the Indians have not had the lowest average in the league. YESTERDAY: Pawtucket overcame a 5-0 deficit and rallied for a 6-5 win. Anton French set a Victory Field record with four stolen bases in the game. Tribe DH Pete Zoccolillo drove in three of the five runs. Nate Teut worked five strong innings on the mound. DUROCHER ON REHAB: RHP Jayson Durocher has joined the Indians on a rehab assignment. Durocher underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow to remove bone spurs on March 8. Durocher has made two starts working one inning each time. He's thrown 22 pitches - 17 of them for strikes. His next outing is scheduled for Saturday at Buffalo. ON THE MOUND: Righthander Francisco Campos makes his team-leading ninth start. From April 26-May 6, Campos turned in three strong outings in a row going 2-1 with a 2.84 ERA. He struggled his last time out though lasting just 3.2 innings against Buffalo Sunday. He was tagged for six runs (two earned) and six hits. Earlier this week Campos was outrighted off the Milwaukee 40-man roster. SMITH STILL STREAKING: Mark Smith's 14-game hitting streak was snapped Tuesday with an 0-for-3 performance, but he still has a streak alive. Smith has reached base safely in 17 straight games dating back to April 26. That's the eighth-longest such streak in the IL this season. Smith's hitting streak is the fourth-longest in the IL this season. Smith leads the Indians with a .319 average, 18 RBI and 10 multi-hit games. He was the Indians Player of the Month for April. HOT AT THE PLATE: The Indians are hitting .283 in May and have scored 82 runs (5.5 rpg). Bill Hall leads the team with a .393 average, 13 runs, 22 hits and 10 RBI. Keith Luuloa is hitting .341 with a team-high .683 slugging percentage. Jason Conti (.321) also has 13 runs scored and has three homers. The Indians May average is the third-best in the league. TAKING A FREE PASS: Joe Lawrence leads the Indians and is tied for fourth in the IL with 22 bases on balls. Lawrence has a .350 OB%. ON THE BOARD EARLY: The Indians have scored a team-best 27 runs in the first inning. The Tribe has plated a first-inning run in 14 games this season, but is just 6-8 in those games. The ninth inning is the only inning in which the Indians have not scored in double figures (6). The Indians have scored just 28 runs over the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. LONG BALL PROBLEMS: The Indians have hit 22 home runs which ranks 12th in the IL while the pitching staff has surrendered a league-high 39 long balls. The Tribe has been outhomered 15-11 at Victory Field. Pawtucket boasts opposite totals. The Paw Sox offense is second in the league lead with 38 round trippers while the pitching staff has surrendered a league-low 14. UPCOMING PROBABLES: Saturday at Buffalo - RHP David Manning (2-0, 2.03) vs. RHP Jason Bere (0-0, 1.13) Sunday at Buffalo - RHP Dave Burba (2-3, 2.91) vs. LHP Brian Tallet (3-4, 4.50) Monday at Buffalo - RHP Pasqual Coco (3-4, 5.26) vs. RHP Jason Phillips (6-0, 2.70) Tuesday at Buffalo - LHP Nate Teut (1-1, 3.86) vs. RHP Jamie Brown (3-1, 1.95)
  15. The already very thin ranks of the outfielders at the Brewers' Rookie League level just got a little thinner. Following up Stephen Hunt's retirement of a couple of weeks back, OF Tommy Carrow voluntarily retired on May 10th, and has been removed from the Helena roster. Carrow, who will be 22 on July 31st, was the Brewers' 37th round draft choice in 2001 out of the University of Tampa. He became a Brewerfan.net legend and fan favorite when he registered a .447 OBP with Ogden in 2001. We all waited for the magic to continue in 2002 at Beloit, but it never did, and playing time for Carrow became pretty sporadic. We wish Tommy well in the future. Thanks to the Brewers' front office staff for responding so quickly when we inquired about Carrow's status (having noticed that he had been removed from the Helena roster on the team's website this week). 19. Huntsville Site Game Summary: Nice detailed account as usual... www.huntsvillestars.com/n...?newsid=65 David Weiser's Huntsville Report: ROLL OVER ROHLICEKThe signs look so good........ The Stars have the league lead in ERA, and even though they're on the bottom among batting leaders, their clutch hitting has won a lot of games........ They're off to their best start since 1998, when they were 23-15 after 38 games...... But it's only mid-May. It's not in the bag....... It's only a 3 game lead, and the Birmingham Barons are starting to play some serious baseball. They won Thursday night over Eastern Division leader Carolina, 5-2, putting them 2 games over .500....... Before the 1st half ends, we still have two series to play against the Barons and two more against the Diamond Jaxx. Anyone can look at the most obvious stats and point them out as the reason the Stars are playing like winners, but it's showing subtly in a couple of ways I had overlooked........ One is efficiency. The Stars, who are not hitting as well as the rest of the league, are using what hits they muster to get runners in scoring position and across the plate. They lead the league in stolen bases. That helps. Also, you can look at the difference between the runs and hits they score every game. In most cases, the difference has been less than five. 24 times in 38 games, in fact........ While using more patience at the plate and making the best use of the speed they have, they've used what hits they've gotten to score runs...... In those 24 games where the difference between runs scored per game and hits is less than five, they've won 18 games....... Left on base totals are usually trash stats, not even worthy of record keeping, but they show, if anything, they've wasted fewer opportunities than their opponents. The Stars have left 249 runners on base, an average of 6.5/game, while their opponents have left 297 ---- a gaping difference of nearly 8 per game. The Stars have also been able to win on the road. They are now 11-4 after tonight, another telling sign of a good ballclub, and they did it in their first visit this year to Pringles Park and their first meeting with the Diamond Jaxx of tornado-ravaged Jackson, Tennessee........ The tornado ripped right through downtown, but there was little damage to the Big Chip, located near Interstate 40....... After scoring just 4 runs in 4 games against the strong pitching of the Tennessee Smokies, the Stars held nothing back from the start....... The Stars were able to get their first six hitters on base in the 1st inning, starting with a double by Ryan Knox off the 20-ft. wall in left field....... Dave Krynzel was hit by a pitch and J.J. Hardy singled to load the bases........ Corey Hart broke out of a slump and singled in Knox for the first run........ Brandon Gemoll. Every time I hear or read about this guy, it's with an extra-base hit in the same sentence. He doubles down the right field line, scoring Krynzel and Hardy to make it 3-0........ Daryl Clark becomes the 2nd hitter in the inning to get hit with a pitch --- right off the helmet and the bases are loaded again........ Richard Paz couldn't keep the party going, but his double-play grounder did at least score Hart to make it 4-0, forcing Gemoll to third........ Mike Kremblas followed with a single that scored Gemoll and Mike Jones, off to a 5-1 start now, had all he would need, with some help, to get the win. Jonesy's streak of 21 consecutive scoreless innings came to a quick end, though, as Jason Dubois' sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the 1st scored Ray Sadler........ The Stars sealed the game in the 6th. With two out and a 6-3 lead, Gemoll doubled in Hardy to make it 8-3........ Kremblas hit a laser beam inside the 310 foul pole in left for his 2nd homer of the year to make it 9-3......... Matt Childers pitched four good innings and lowered his ERA to 1.84 in earning his 2nd save. Hardy, who's spent two weeks out of action studying the pitchers, is off to a hot start again. He's 4-for-6 in his two starts since his injury and had his first multi-hit game since April 25....... Hart commited only his 3rd error in 19 games. He had 7 in his first 18........ The Stars were put down in order only once -- in the 7th inning....... Going into this game, the Stars had 5 pitchers among the top 10 ERA leaders in the league -- Luis Martinez (1.13), who is 2nd, and Ben Diggins (2.36), Derek Lee (2.40), Mike Jones (2.43), and Pedro Liriano (2.49). Jonesy's ERA dropped to 2.76 after this game. They're creepy and they're kooky........ It's the Adams family......... Left-hander Brian Adams was outrighted by the Boston Red Sox as the player-to-be-named-later in the trade that sent former Mobile Bay Bear pitcher Mike Nicolas from the Padres to the Stars and then to the Red Sox the same day.......... Adams was assigned to Huntsville to complete the deal....... An 8th round draft choice in 1999, he had a 3.23 ERA in 83 professional games prior to this season. He doesn't appear to be a fireballer, but he did allow only 6 HRs in 208 2/3 innings........ With Brian Adams and Corey Hart on the team, who's next? Please, not Michael Jackson! The league's ERA leader, Danny Haren, was promoted by the Cardinals to Memphis. Good luck, Danny! Don't come back!. During the Stars' off-day, Cristian Guerrero was put on waivers, clamied by the Seattle Marinters, and assigned to the Inland Empire 66ers of the California League. This came four days after Guerrero had been sent down by Huntsville to High Desert. Only a day before Guerrero was picked up by the Mariners, he had sparked a 4-run, 8th inning rally for High Desert with a leadoff triple to help beat Lake Elsinore, 6-3......... While we're at High Desert, former Star Mark Ernster hit a pair of HRs tonight as the Mavs beat Lake Elsinore, 11-6. Ernster, who hit .244 for the Stars in 2000, is hitting .342 for the Mavs this season........ Daryl Clark is 1-for-11 for the Stars since being promoted from High Desert. Give him some time. When he left the California League, he was leading in HRs and was 3rd in batting. Jim Rushford, hitting .190 at Class AAA - Oklahoma (PCL), was recently released by the Texas Rangers organization and signed to a minor league contract by the Milwaukee Brewers. He was assigned to Indianapolis........ The Indians released infielder Scott Seabol to make room for him on the roster........ Rushford hit .342 for the Stars in 57 games after a promotion from High Desert in 2001. Ben Diggins was officially placed on the disabled list by the Stars and will miss a couple of starts at least, with arm fatigue...... Derek Lee (4-1, 2.40) will be placed back in the rotation, where he so often has capably fared.

  21. High Desert 11, Lake Elsinore (Padres) 6 High Desert Site Game Summary: Late Rally Helps Mavs Wrap Up a Great Homestand!ADELANTO, CA ? For the second time in three nights, the High Desert Mavericks used a late-inning rally to beat the Lake Elsinore Storm. Five in the seventh, and three more in the eighth put the Mavs comfortably in front, as they beat the Storm by a final score of 11-6 on Thursday night at Mavericks Stadium. Mark Ernster became the first Maverick to homer in the last ten games, doing it twice in as many at-bats, to help the Mavs pull to within five games of the first place Storm. Ernster?s two-run shot in the fifth put the Mavs in front at 3-1. His three-run blast in the seventh tied the game at 6-6. Ernster?s home runs were his first two of the year. With the game tied at 6-6, Jason Belcher, Dan Boyd and Scott Candelaria all had consecutive doubles as the Mavs took an 8-6 lead. They added three more in the eighth off Storm reliever Geoff Jones, as Belcher and Candelaria each had run-scoring hits. Both finished the evening with four hits. Justin Backsmeyer, who came on after Danny Kolb went seven innings, worked two scoreless frames, for his first save as a Maverick. He struck out four, while allowing just two hits in relief. Kolb (2-2), pitched well in earning his second win in as many starts, despite allowing six runs in seven innings. His first five innings were great, allowing just a solo home run to Josh Barfield, his fifth. He then allowed a three-run home run to Greg Sain, his eighth of the year, as the Storm took a 5-3 lead in the sixth. Storm starter Mike Thompson was chased in the fifth, after allowing three runs on six hits in 4.2 innings. Rob Ramsey, a former big-leaguer who had brain surgery in 2002, made his Storm debut and worked a scoreless 1.1 innings of relief. Robert Garvin (3-4) took the loss in relief, allowing four runs in just .1 innings. The Mavs went 5-2 on the homestand, as they are now just four games under .500 at 18-22. The Mavs will be in Rancho Cucamonga on Friday for a double-header against the Quakes. Jeff Robinson (0-0) goes in game one, while Justin Gordon (1-0) gets the call in the second game. Game one will begin at 6:15 (8:15 PM Central) on Friday night at the Epicenter. 22. Indy Site Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians were unable to keep the momentum from the past two games Thursday night, as the bullpen faltered in a 6-5 defeat to the Pawtucket Red Sox. Lou Collier added to his International League leading RBI total by driving home Andy Abad in the top of the eighth off of Roberto Giron for the winning run as the PawSox (21-16) overcame a five-run deficit. The Indians jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings. Pete Zoccolillo doubled in the first two Indians runs in the first inning off of reliever Ryan Cameron. In the second inning, Zoccolillo was again credited with an RBI when he was hit on the foot by a Cameron pitch with the bases loaded. Jayson Durocher made his second rehabilitation start for Indianapolis throwing 13 pitches, 10 strikes, allowing only one hit in one inning of work. Nate Teut relieved Durocher to start the second inning and lasted 5.0 innings allowing two runs on three hits while striking out five. From that point, it was all PawSox, as a trio of Tribe relievers surrendered four runs on four hits over the final three innings. Mike Buddie started the seventh inning by allowing back-to-back doubles to Collier and Cesar Crespo, then retired Earl Snyder before being relieved by Shane Nance with one out and Crespo at third base. Angel Santos, the first batter to face Nance, drove in Crespo to tighten the score to 5-4 on a groundout to shortstop before Nance retired Bill Haselman to end the inning. Nance (0-3) took to the mound to start the eighth inning and issued a one out walk to Anton French, who promptly stole second base for his fourth steal of the game, a Victory Field single-game record. With French on second and only one out, Andy Abad hit a groundball to second baseman Joe Lawrence, but Lawrence's throw was wide of first baseman Keith Luuloa allowing Abad to move into second base and French to score the tying run. Giron then came on in relief of Nance and retired Julio Zuleta before allowing the single to Collier that plated Abad with the winning run. The Indians (15-24) and PawSox complete the four-game series Friday night as the Tribe's eight-game homestand also comes to a close. Bronson Arroyo (4-1, 3.57) will face the Tribe's Francisco Campos (2-4, 5.72) at 7 p.m.
  23. Game Two: South Bend 1, Beloit 0, 11 innings (scheduled for seven) Only two good words about this one: Manny Parra Linescore from Beloit Site: www.snappersbaseball.com/...me_id=1073 What happened to the offense, madbad? (Actually, it's been pretty lethargic all spring...)
  24. It appears as though the Brewers have chosen to accept a PTBNL in the Mike Nicolas deal with Boston. You all remember Nicolas, the RH reliever with various off-the-field baggage, who was claimed from San Diego and was immediately shipped to the Red Sox. 25-year-old LHP Brian Adams, the 1999 8th round selection of the Red Sox out of Liberty University, has been outrighted by Boston to Huntsville. Adams had a 3.23 ERA in 83 games (13 starts) in his pro career prior to this season. For his career, he has allowed fewer hits than IP (198 in 208.2), walking 92, striking out 143 (so the BB/K and K/IP ratios don't point to him as a fireballer). Maybe most impressive is that he's only allowed six HR's in those 208.2 IP. LHP Brian Adams Career Stats: www.sports-wired.com/mlb/...sp?ID=4349 In 2003 at AA Portland, he has struggled with control in seven short relief stints, perhaps fitting in that he arrived in exchange for Nicolas, who's been known for his own version of lack of self-control http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif . Brian Adams 2003 Numbers: www.baseballamerica.com/c...s%2C+brian And yes, we now have Corey Hart and Brian Adams in Huntsville. I think I saw Hart open for Adams at the Boston Garden in 1985 -- rockin' show. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  25. Game One: South Bend (Diamondbacks) 3, Beloit 1 LHP Jeff Housman had a shutout working through six innings in this game scheduled for seven; unfortunately, things didn't work out as Housman tried to close things out in the 7th; Snappers manage only three hits...
