Helena Independent Record Game Story: Raptors rip Brewers, 16-4 By KEVIN SHIVELY - IR Sports Writer The Ogden Raptors took a break after their six-run first inning, but found their bats again in the seventh to beat the Helena Brewers 16-4 at Kindrick Legion Field on Friday to take a 2-1 lead in the series. After taking a six-run lead in the first, the Raptors didn't send a runner across the plate in the next four innings, and Helena started to collect a few runs and narrow the gap. After the sixth inning, Ogden made it clear who would win the game. The Raptors scored twice in the seventh, and got five in the eighth and three in the ninth. Designated hitter Corey Dunlap led the Raptors at the plate. He went 3-for-6 with seven RBI and two runs scored. He started the Raptor's spree in the seventh with a two-out, two-run homer over the left field wall, pushing Ogden's lead to 8-4. In the eighth he hit a bases-loaded double off the centerfield wall that scored all three runners, and he had another RBI off a single in the ninth. The six-run first inning was courtesy of four back-to-back hits and a sacrifice fly from Dunlap. Two of the hits were doubles from Daniel Batz and Travis Denker. Denker was 4-for-5 in the game and Batz was 2-for-4. All 16 Ogden runs were earned. Helena's first two runs were in the second, when Dallas Bates singled and centerfielder Charlie Fermaint doubled to move him to third. Alberto Segura hit a sacrifice fly to send Bates home, and Fermaint scored on a wild pitch. Bates hit a sacrifice fly to score Gilberto Acosta in the fourth, bringing the score to 6-3. In the fifth, Ogden pitcher David Parker walked the bases loaded and Acosta hit an RBI-single, but Parker got the next three batters out to get out of the inning. The pitcher put in four innings of work, striking out five and allowing only four hits for his third win of the season. In the seventh, Acosta tried to get something going for the Brewers, hitting what he thought was a double to center, but Ogden protested the play, saying Acosta didn't touch first base. Umpire Mike Lusky called him out. Righthanded pitcher Jeff Garner, who the Brewers just brought up from the Arizona League picked up his first loss with the Brewers. He pitched the first 2 2/3 innings and struck out five, but allowed the six runs in the first. The two teams will square off for the last game of their four game series tonight at 7:05. Josh Baker will be on the mound for Helena and Jordan Pratt will throw for the Raptors. Photo by Jon Ebelt IR Staff - Although football season is still over a month away, Ogden's Travis Denker, right, seems to be in the pigskin mood while colliding with Helena baserunner Alberto Segura on Friday at Kindrick Legion Field. Denker had just made the force out at second before both players went down in a heap after Denker's throw to first base in a double play attempt. http://www.helenair.com/content/articles/2004/07/24/sports_top/b01072404_01.jpg -

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update: COSTELLO'S ENCOREWhat could be better than the Stars and Barons playing a weekend series with 1st place on the line? How's this?....... After garnering a BC Pitcher-of-the-Week award earlier on Friday for his 11K, complete game three-hit shutout against Montgomery July 18, Ryan Costello fashioned another masterpiece --- six no-hit innings against the Birmingham Barons to get the Stars off to a good start in this four-game series....... Because the balloting ran from last Friday to Thursday, Costello is eligible again for the award, and who's to say with this impressive start, that he can't win it again........ Making this start all the more impressive is the fact that he did it all with a stingy strike zone from Andy Roberts' umpiring crew. That was the observation of pitching coach Fred Dabney....... Of Costello's 94 pitches, 49 were for strikes (52%)....... There were no borderline calls in Costello's favor. With Costello's 6th win, he leads all Huntsville starters in victories. Costello retired the first seven Barons to face him before hitting Andy Gonzalez on the foot on a 1-2 change-up, but Chris Stewart lined out to center and Michael Spidale struck out looking at a 3-2 pitch......... Richard Paz walked in the 5th with one out, but Costello retired the next two batters to end that inning....... Costello walked two more in his final inning, putting a runner in scoring position for the first time in the game for Birmingham, but Rob Sasser, in a real slump over his last nine games, hitting .200 in 30 at-bats, flied easily to right......... Paul Stewart preserved the no-hitter in the 7th inning, retiring Carlos Maldonado and Paz, but Normand Martel, a .314 hitter against the Stars, and Tommy Nicholson, a seldom-used utility player, came through with back-to-back hits to break up the no-hitter and the shutout....... Stewart struck out pinch-hitter Scott Bikowski swinging, but as luck would have it, Stew's strike three pitch skipped past Joel Alvarado and Bikowski was on, with Nicholson advancing to second........ With the score 3-1, Brad Nelson saved the day, lunging to make a fine catch in left of a Spidale liner, saving Stewart one and possibly two runs that would have tied the game. The Barons were never a threat after that. Johnny Raburn set up the Stars first run with the first hit of the game, a leadoff double that went over the line in left and kicked up some chalk down the left field line in the 3rd inning........ Prince Fielder nearly had the first hit in the 1st inning, but it was taken away from him in a scoring decision........ Raburn, hitting .288 this month, scored two of the Stars four runs on the night........ Raburn took third on a high fly ball by Alvarado and scored on a fly ball by Rickie Weeks, sliding just ahead of Martel's throw to Maldonado. A double play in the 5th inning could not stop the Stars from scoring the deciding run that inning........ Alvarado had bunted too close to the mound with Ryan Knox on second and Raburn, who had reached on a bunt hit, on first......... Meaux picked up the ball and fired to Paz, who then fired across the diamond to retire Alvarado......... That's one reason why manager Frank Kremblas is not a big fan of the bunt, but he'll tolerate it more if it's used to reach base, rather than sacrifice. He doesn't even use the sacrifice with the pitcher or a weak hitter at the plate........ Raburn advanced to second on the fielder's choice. Weeks walked on four pitches to extend the inning, then Tony Gwynn, Jr. lined a single on the hop through the left side, scoring Raburn........ Fielder flied out to right to end the 5th. Knox doubled with two out to drive in Jamie Gann with the insurance run in the 6th, and Nelson ended Meaux's night with a first-pitch singled to score Fielder in the 8th, making it a final 4-1. Dennis Sarfate (4-9, 5.12) will make his 2nd appearance against the Barons this season, Saturday night. He'll face off against lefty Jim Bullard (7-3, 3.84), who's a bit of a Starkiller with an ERA under 2.00 against this team in his career. -

Indianapolis Post-Doubleheader Notes: Game (1): Richmond (54-43) launched two homers off Indians starter Pedro Liriano in the first game of the doubleheader Friday, defeating the Tribe, 7-0. The setback set an Indians? consecutive games lost record at 11 in the Victory Field era and left the Tribe at 42-56. DeWayne Wise and Ryan Langerhans each hit roundtrippers off Liriano (3-9), who has surrendered a team-high 20 home runs this season. Meantime, Braves starter (Indiana State product) Chuck Smith (5-2) shut down the Indians offense, finishing with a four-hit shutout. At one point, Smith retired 14 hitters in a row. Richmond added its final run off Tribe reliever Dan Reichert in the sixth inning. QUOTES: Cecil Cooper, Tribe manager: ?Smith pitched extremely well for them tonight,? Cooper said. ?He had pinpoint control and we just couldn?t put things together.? NOTES: Four of Richmond?s first five leadoff hitters reached base in game one. The Braves have the best record in the IL, while the Indians now have the worst mark. Richmond has won 11 of its last 13 games. Game (2): GAME SUMMARY: Richmond smashed three solo homers off Tribe starter Clint Weibl during the second game of the doubleheader Friday night to defeat Indianapolis, 6-4. It was the Indians? 12th straight setback. Mike Hessman smashed a solo homer in the first, then Darren Hollins and James Jurries hit back-to-back round trippers in the second inning off Weibl to jumpstart the Braves to a 3-0 advantage. Indianapolis rallied for three runs in the fourth, but Richmond?s All-Star closer Matt Whiteside put the potential tying runs on base in the Indians final attempt in the seventh inning, but was able to escape with the save. QUOTE: Mike Hessman, Richmond?s offensive star on his home run off Weibl: ?He threw me a slow pitch,? Hessman said. ?I knew that it was a changeup or something. He threw it for a strike and I was fortunate to make contact. Everybody?s contributing right now and we?re playing great baseball. It?s news to me that Indianapolis has a losing streak.? NOTES: The Braves and Indians play another doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is 3:00 p.m. -

Beloit Game Summary from the Cedar Rapids' Site: Vinny Rottino had three hits and drove in four runs to fuel Beloit?s 5-1 win over the Kernels on Friday night, completing a sweep of the four-game series. The Midwest League game was played before a crowd of 3,822 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The loss was the fourth straight for the Kernels and dropped them into sixth place in the Western Division second-half race at 13-15. The Kernels are 55-42 overall. Beloit (14-14, 52-46) moved a game ahead of the Kernels. Beloit outscored the Kernels, 24-3, in the series and out-hit them, 39-20. It was the first time the Kernels had been swept in a four-game series all season. The four straight losses also match a season high. Beloit southpaw Dana Eveland (7-5) worked eight strong innings for the Snappers, scattering six hits, walking one and striking out eight. He was lifted after surrendering a lead-off double to Matt Pali in the Kernels? ninth. Ty Taubenheim came on and struck out Brandon Wood and Bobby Wilson, and got Baltazar Lopez on a fly ball to center to end the game. Rottino?s two-out RBI single in the top of the first inning gave Beloit a 1-0 lead. The Kernels tied the game, 1-1, in the second inning. Wilson singled, Lopez was hit by a pitch and Blake Balkcom?s single scored Wilson and moved Lopez to third base. The Kernels missed an opportunity to take the lead, though, when Matt Brown and Tommy Duenas struck out and Billy Boyer flied to right. Eveland allowed only three singles over the next six innings, two of the infield variety. Beloit reclaimed the lead in the fourth inning, sending eight men to the plate and scoring three runs. Steve Moss had an RBI single that put the Snappers ahead, 2-1. Rottino?s two-run single tacked on a pair of unearned runs and built Beloit?s margin to 4-1. The Snappers added a run in the ninth on Rottino?s bases-loaded single. He trails Lansing?s Brian Dopirak in the RBI race, 85-82. Dopirak hit two home runs and drove in three runs in Lansing?s 7-1 win over South Bend. -

Huntsville Site Game Summary: How about some props to Gord Ash and Dick Groch (Toronto connection) and the pro scouting staff for tabbing the just-turned 25-year-old Ryan Costello in the minor league phase of last December's Rule 5 draft? After a rousing show, the encore can often be an anti-climax. Stars lefty Ryan Costello had his work cut out for him after the three-hit, 11-strikeout masterpiece he threw July 18 against Montgomery. On Friday night at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium, in the growing heat of a pennant chase, Costello was even better, tossing six no-hit innings in Huntsville?s 4-1 win over Birmingham before 6369 vocal Barons fans at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. Huntsville (16-11, 48-49) took sole possession of first place in the Southern League West second-half standings, one in front of the Barons (15-12, 50-46). Costello (6-3) tossed six hitless frames and was removed after throwing 94 pitches with a 3-0 lead. Costello, earlier Friday chosen the BC Powder Southern League Pitcher of the Week for July 16-22, picked up his second straight win, allowing only four base runners on three walks and one hit batter. Costello fanned five on route to his sixth victory of the season. ?Costello threw outstanding, commanded the ball very well,? Stars pitching coach Fred Dabney said. ?He had to deal with a tight zone, didn?t get any borderline calls. That got his pitch count way up there. He had the best command he?s had the whole year. We could?ve extended him a little bit, but the zone was getting even tighter, so we thought we?d get him out of there.? Huntsville jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Rickie Weeks? second-inning sacrifice fly, Tony Gwynn Jr.?s fifth-inning, run-scoring single and Ryan Knox?s RBI-double in the sixth. After the Barons broke up the no-hitter with two outs in the sixth on a double by Normand Martel, pinch-hitter Tommy Nicholson singled home Martel to make it 3-1. Brad Nelson?s eighth-inning single knocked in Prince Fielder for the game?s final run. Ryan Meaux (4-8) suffered the loss, surrendering four earned runs on nine hits and one walk with six strikeouts over seven innings. Fernando Rijo and Paul Stewart combined with Costello to hold the Barons to just three hits for the game. Rijo recorded his second save, allowing one hit and fanning one in a scoreless ninth. Stewart tossed two innings, permitting one run on two hits with one strikeout. Stars righty Dennis Sarfate (4-9, 5.12) meets Barons lefty Jim Bullard (7-3, 3.84) in game two of the series Saturday night at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. Game time is 7:05 p.m. and the FPH Financial Services Pre-game show starts at 6:50 p.m. Stars baseball can be heard on ESPN 1450 and at www.huntsvillestars.com. -

Final: Arizona Brewers 2, Arizona Angels 1, 11 innings Just one walk allowed -- what an awesome pitching performance by the four kids involved, none of them yet 20 years old, including 2nd round RHP Yovani Gallardo; neither Brewer run was driven in, so hardly an offensive show; only one hit (and one walk) for Hernan Iribarren?
