  2. Helena Game Summary from the Great Falls Site: Tonight the Great Falls White Sox were defeated by the Helena Brewers 8-4 at Legion Park. For the Sox, JD Johnson (1-1) took the loss in relief. Robbie Wooley (1-0) picks up the win for Helena. After a brief 19-minute rain delay to start the game, the Brewers started off the scoring in the top of the first inning. A leadoff triple by Gilberto Acosta put a man on third and no one out. Acosta was later singled home by first baseman Grant Richardson. At the end of the second inning another rainstorm came in, delaying the game for another two hours and three minutes. When we got back to playing baseball the Sox would take the lead on a two-run home run by Tom Collaro. The lead only lasted two innings, as Helena would get a two-run home run of their own by Charlie Fermaint. The Brewers would score three in the seventh and once more in the eighth to take the 8-4 victory. On a side note, tonight's game was the last professional baseball game to end, anywhere in the country. Tomorrow night's Fourth of July contest is the third of this three game series with the Brewers. The starters for tomorrow night's game night are: Garry Bakker (RHP) for Great Falls and Alvaro Martinez (RHP) for Helena.
  3. High Desert Game Summary from the Giants' Site: The San Jose Giants were defeated by the High Desert Mavericks 2-1 Friday evening at Municipal Stadium in front of 4,236 fans on a night that featured postgame fireworks. Giants starter Merkin Valdez was dominant as he struck out 12 in seven innings of work. Valdez gave up one run and did not allow a walk in an outing where he hit as high as 98 miles per hour on the radar gun. Both teams were held scoreless until Brian Buscher drove in San Jose¹s first run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Buscher hit an RBI single to score Brad Vericker who had lead off the inning with a double. However, High Desert fought back in the top of the sixth as they tied the game on a Dan Boyd double that scored Callix Crabbe. In the seventh, the Mavericks rallied again as Jeremy Frost led off the inning with a double down the left field line which was then followed by a Ben Van Iderstine single to right field giving them men on first and third with no outs. Valdez then shut down the threat by striking out the next two batters and getting Kennard Bibbs to hit a harmless dribbler to second base. The deadlock continued until the top of the ninth inning when Giants shortstop Angel Chavez committed a costly error when he over threw first baseman Brad Vericker after fielding a routine ground ball which would have been the third out of the inning. The throwing error allowed Van Iderstine to score from second base to give the Mavericks a one-run lead. In the bottom the ninth, the Giants threatened when Nate Schierholtz led off the inning with a single. However, Schierholtz was forced out at second on when Carlos Sosa attempted to sacrifice bunt. Brad Vericker then hit a sharply hit grounder to Mavericks first baseman Travis Hinton who started the 3-6-3 double play to end the game.
  4. Huntsville Times Game Story: Now some quotes... Stars create their own pyrotechnics By SKIP VAUGHN For The Times skipv@htimes.com Huntsville Stars manager Frank Kremblas says there's something different about Fourth of July weekend. "Obviously it's more fun because there's more fans in the stands. That's one thing that's good," he said before Saturday night's game against Mobile. "It's great because of the fan support and the fans that come out. It seems like they're a little more into the games and more excited." The Stars gave the announced crowd of 8,264 plenty to get excited about by beating the BayBears 5-3 at Joe Davis Stadium. It was Huntsville's third straight win. Left-hander Jeff Housman (2-5) earned the victory with ten strikeouts, five hits, three runs (one earned) and two walks in seven innings. Fernando Rijo earned his first save with two innings of relief. "I thought Housman threw the ball well," Kremblas said. "He had a little rough spot there in the fourth and then recovered." "I was throwing my sinker probably the most tonight," Housman said. "I was getting ahead pretty good. And I had a lot of movement. I think that was probably the biggest reason (for the successful outing)." The Stars (7-3) opened the scoring with a four-run third inning. Tony Gwynn Jr. reached on a one-out bunt single, Prince Fielder walked and Brad Nelson delivered an RBI single. Hometown hero Jamie Gann followed with a run-scoring double that brought home Fielder. Chris Barnwell then added a two-run single. "Pretty routine," said Gwynn, who went 2-for-3 with a run scored. "That's what I'm supposed to do, set the table for the big guys behind me. As long as I keep getting on base, we're going to keep scoring runs." "Anytime you can win at home is great," said Gann, a former New Market resident. "We should take advantage of the home games." Nelson, Barnwell and Kade Johnson added two hits apiece for the Stars' ten-hit fireworks. Mobile (4-6) struck back with two unearned runs in the fourth. Shortstop Ozzie Chavez's errant throw enabled Josh Barfield to reach first and he scored on a double by Nick Trzesniak. Marcus Nettles added an RBI single to score Ben Johnson, who had reached on a fielder's choice. The Stars went ahead 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth with an unearned run of their own, courtesy of a throwing error by pitcher Brian Whitaker (5-6), allowing Johnson to score from second. Johnson had drawn a leadoff walk, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Housman and scored when Whitaker threw wild to first after fielding Gwynn's grounder. But the BayBears cut the deficit in the sixth when Greg Sain got a leadoff hit, advanced on Rico Washington's single and scored on Trzesniak's sacrifice fly. "The team played well," Gann said. "We had some key hits, the pitching was outstanding." "Overall good job," Kremblas said. The Stars travel to Montgomery for a four-game series against the Biscuits starting tonight at 6:35.
  5. David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update: HOT NIGHT FOR HOUSMANA picturesque evening before a packed house, the 2nd largest crowd of the season, needing only 58 more bodies to match the April 23 game against the Smokies, a Fireworks Friday........ Quite the opposite of the dark, stormy backdrop for Friday night's game....... I'm told that two miles in every direction from the Stadium, it poured down in torrents, yet Joe Davis Stadium was practically dry throughout the entire ten innings....... It's no stretch to see this as one of a number of good omens I see in my crystal ball........ The Stars are off to a 7-3 start, and they've done this against the two first-half winners. This night was simply one of Jeff Housman's finest....... Housman's first eight outs were all strikeouts, all but one of them on sliders. There were a pair of walks sandwiched in, in the 1st inning to Ronnie Merrill and Greg Sain, giving him 18 walks in the 1st inning in his 13 starts this year, but he still defied a personal jinx --- an 8.31 ERA in the opening frame........ I still would refrain from making what would seem like the superlative of calling this his finest start of the year, because of a scoreless seven inning performance against the Jacksonville Suns on May 8 in which he struck out nine -- the previous high for a Stars pitcher this year, but Housman's 10 Ks was a personal high for his pro career. The strikeout string ended with a fly out by Merrill to end the 3rd and the frequency of strikeouts diminished dramatically after that --- one strikeout in the 4th and one in the 6th on Marcus Nettles, on his 90th pitch........ When not striking out, Mobile hit most of Housman's pitches in the air. Jeff's dominance was broken in the 4th inning after Ozzie Chavez took Josh Barfield's sharp one-hopper just above his breadbasket to lead off the inning........ Chavez, taken aback by the suddenness of the hop, awkwardly got rid of the ball and forced Prince Fielder to leap for the ball....... Barfield took the opportunity to cross the bag at the same time and Chavez was charged with a throwing error...... Rico Washington, with one out, dumped a blooper in front of Tony Gwynn, Jr. in left-center field for a hit, moving Barfield to second........ Barfield went to third on a force play and scored on a double by Nick Trzesniak that went all the way to the wall in front of the Yellow Book sign....... Trzesniak came into the game hitting just .160 vs. the Stars........ Ben Johnson, who reached on the force, scored when Nettles blooped Housman's first pitch in front of Gwynn in center......... A pair of sacrifice flies in the 6th inning brought home Greg Sain in the 6th for Mobile's final run. In contrast to Housman, Mobile starter Brian Whitaker (5-5, 3.57) has most often gotten into trouble in the middle innings, allowing opposing batters to hit for a .317 average in the 4th and 5th innings combined........ However, it was the 3rd inning that ruined his night. With one out, Tony Gwynn executed a drag bunt to the 1st base side with Whitaker covering first, but there was no chance at all to get Gwynn, whose father was the master of the drag bunt......... Gwynn was going on 3-and-0 when Whitaker walked Prince Fielder. The "stolen base" became moot........ Next, Brad Nelson lined a 1-0 pitch for a single that looked a lot like his game-winner of the previous night. Gwynn scored with the Stars' first run and Fielder moved to third........ Next, Jamie Gann, whose debut as I mentioned previously draws a strange parallel to Ryan Christenson's in 1997, doubled on a 3-1 pitch toward the right field line, cut off by Ben Johnson before it could reach the corner. Fielder scored to make it 2-0 and Nelson held up at third....... Gann swung on the first pitch in his three failed plate appearances. This worked in his debut when he singled Thursday on first pitches, and on Friday, when he homered in his first at-bat on a first pitch from Chris Rojas, but he's 0-for-4 now on first pitch swings....... Perhaps he does not want opposing pitchers to get a good bead on him, but it's not working anymore. Chris Barnwell's two-run single, looped into shallow center, provided the Stars with the decision-maker...... Nelson scored easily, but Gann had a great break off second and seeing the ball drop in, he knew he had a chance to score, and he did without a throw in. Housman's bunt to the right side of the infield in the 4th set up the insurance run for the Stars....... Frank Kremblas is, like former Oriole manager Earl Weaver, not a proponent of the sacrifice bunt. Housman's was only the 8th executed by a Stars pitcher this season, and defying that trend, Fernando Rijo made it nine in the 8th inning....... The sacrifice moved Kade Johnson, who walked, to second....... With two out, Gwynn hit a chopper in front of the plate. Whitaker came in to handle it, but threw low to first, sending the ball skipping down the right field line for a three-base error, scoring KJ. Frank had Roberto Giron warming up in the bottom of the 6th, but he went with Fernando Rijo to close out the game....... Rijo, who has now given up just one run in eight innings of relief in his last six appearances, picked up his 1st save....... The Stars have now converted 22 of 26 save appearances this year...... The game ended rather strangely when Mobile manager Gary Jones was inexplicably thrown out of the game after a ball was thrown for a 3-1 count to Kennard Jones........ You can rule out the last pitch on Jones. It was in his favor. Yet Jones was tossed it seems by 3rd base ump John Woods, who has a notoriously quick thumb anyway....... After the game, I talked to Mobile's radio voice, Tom Nichols, who believed Jones was still fuming over a strike call, but it's still puzzling, since it was of no consequence in that inning........ I heard also it was because a balk wasn't called. Both Huntsville pitchers were fast workers. But the earliest that could have happened to Mobile's advantage was in the 7th inning........ And above all else, it's a mystery that Jones would go into hysterics, getting in the face of home plate ump Scott Chamberlain and 3rd base ump Woods, with the game one out away from being finished. I don't get it. The fans didn't get it. Stars voice Robert Portnoy didn't get it. But it was all in the name of frustration, I guess....... The Stars had won this series from Mobile, and they get to do it again at the Joe next weekend. Sunday, the Stars travel down I-65 to Montgomery for the start of a four-game series before a sold-out Independence Day crowd at Riverwalk Stadium........ Chris Saenz (5-5, 4.15) will get the nod for the Stars against the Biscuits' Chris Seddon (4-4, 3.86). The Stars are 6-5 against Montgomery this year, who have started the second half with a 2-7 record. The St. Louis Cardinals have released Matt Parker, who was such a fine middle reliever for the Stars last year (8-6, 3.10), yet was released by the Brewers before the season started. The Stars did not see Parker in their most recent three-game series against the Smokies at the end of May. Parker was 2-2 with a 5.05 ERA in 25 games for the Smokies at the time of his release.
  6. Huntsville Site Game Summary: Behind an outstanding start from lefty Jeff Housman, the Stars took their third straight from first-half champ Mobile, downing the Bay Bears 5-3 on Saturday night at Joe Davis Stadium. Huntsville (7-3, 38-41) has won eight of its last 11 and remains one game up in the Southern League West second-half standings. Housman (2-5) opened with a dominant stretch, tossing three no-hit innings, fanning the first eight batters he retired, including a stretch of six straight hitters, two off the Southern League record. He authored seven solid innings for his second win, permitting three runs, one earned, on five hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts, the Stars? single-game season high. Housman threw 100 pitches, 64 for strikes, for his first win since May 23. After rallying for dramatic victories the previous two nights, Huntsville broke through first against Mobile starter Brian Whitaker. Five straight batters reached safely with one out in the third. Tony Gwynn Jr. bunted for a hit and Prince Fielder drew a walk. Brad Nelson singled home Gwynn and sent Fielder to third. Jamie Gann?s double scored Fielder and pushed Nelson to third. Chris Barnwell blooped a single to right-center to plate both Nelson and Gann for a 4-0 Stars lead. After the Bears scored two unearned tallies in the fourth, Huntsville added one of its own the bottom half for a 5-2 advantage. Kade Johnson led off with a walk and took second on Housman?s sacrifice bunt. Gwynn hit a two-out chopper in front of the plate, and Whitaker pounced but threw low to first, sending the ball up the rightfield line. Johnson scored and Gwynn took third. Fielder fanned to end the frame. Whitaker (5-6) suffered his sixth defeat, surrendering five runs, four earned, on nine hits and three walks with one strikeout over 5 2/3 innings. Fernando Rijo notched his first save, walking two and fanning two over two scoreless, hitless innings. Huntsville travels to face Montgomery in the opener of a four-game series on Sunday night at Riverwalk Stadium. Righty Chris Saenz (5-5, 4.15) throws for the Stars. Game time is 6:35 p.m. and the FPH Financial Services Pre-game Show starts at 6:20 p.m. Stars baseball can be heard on ESPN 1450 and at www.huntsvillestars.com.
  7. Indianapolis Post-Game Notes: Louisville tallied four runs in the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie Saturday night to defeat the Indianapolis Indians, 5-1. Tribe starter Adrian Hernandez and Bats starter Dustin Moseley dueled through seven innings. Hernandez pitched all seven innings, allowing one run on three hits, walking five and striking out eight. Moseley threw 6.1 innings, giving up one run on five hits, walking three and striking out seven. Stephen Smitherman?s two-run triple off Tribe reliever Matt Childers in the eighth, sent the Bats on a scoring flurry, which including two more runs in the frame on a run producing double from Kenny Kelly and an RBI single from Ray Olmedo. The Tribe could generate just six hits, two each from Trent Durrington and Corey Hart. The Indians fall to 38-42, Louisville improves to 40-42. Brian Shackelford (5-1) earned the win in relief, while Childers (3-3) picked up the loss. QUOTE: Steven Smitherman on game winning hit: "I was just trying to get a pitch that I could handle," said Smitherman. "The ball was just falling my way tonight." NOTES: Indianapolis falls into last place in the IL West Division behind the Bats.

  14. David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update: THUNDER AND LIGHTNINGI didn't expect this game to last five innings, let alone ten...From the stands, you can see beyond the fence, past the Parkway, Chapman and Monte Sano mountains (to an Arizonan, mesas)........ They were shrouded in dark grey clouds and above that --- even darker clouds --- purplish --- evil harbingers of tornado weather in March and April, but in July, they represented torrents of rain and even hail....... A cold front was coming, and in the 4th, it was finally here, as for the first time, you could finally feel a breeze --- a cool breeze that was whipping the half-mast flag in left field........ Yet not a drop of rain was felt or seen as Mobile tied the game in the top of that inning....... The hope of a barely official ballgame falling the Stars way had vanquished as Ben Johnson lined a ball just over the Yellow Book sign in left field, the first row of billboards. The second sign to the left, next to the ESPN-1450 sign that Greg Sain had curled a home run over in the 2nd inning......... Johnson's homer, following in leadoff walk to Sain on four pitches, tied the game at 4-4. Thunder and lightning continued to crash beyond the stadium as the game progressed....... Fans could actually see the rain fall in the distance, but off to the northwest, there were still patches of white trying to find direction. To me, it symbolized hope of getting this deadlocked game broken and over in the bottom of the inning before it could be called off........ Unbelievably, the drops held off until a few big drops fell during the 7th inning stretch, then in the bottom of the 9th, a brief shower --- not enough, though, to even bother with the tarp...... By the end of the inning, it was done. This ballgame was much like the weather........ Five bombs were hit out of the park tonight (the most among two teams in a game this year) and one triple....... To cap off the night in ironical contrast, the Friday night fireworks show made it. The Stars began banging off an old nemesis, Chris Rojas, in the 2nd inning....... Rojas is the scheduled starter for the Southern League All-Star Game on July 13. This was his 15th appearance vs. the Stars in a history going back to April 2002, and the Stars have slapped him well....... Going back to 2002, Rojas was 2-6 with a 5.43 ERA. This May, he gave up 7 runs in 10 1/3 innings in two starts, yet was not charged with a decision.......... The Stars hit for the cycle in the 2nd inning off Rojas, and I can't tell you the last time I saw that --- a leadoff single, grounded to left by Brad Nelson was followed by a home run by Jamie Gann....... Gann, well-rested this time (an 11-hour nap following a day that beats Jack Bauer's -- 36 hours without sleep --- but that's a story I missed telling you after Thursday night) got hold of a 1-0 fastball away and hit it to the opposite field........ Chris Barnwell followed with a blast to left to break the 2-2 tie........ Johnny Raburn then hit the hardest part of the cycle --- a first-pitch triple that rattled the right field corner, evading right fielder Ben Johnson....... As Raburn approached third, Jake the Wonder Dog, one of the Stars promotional draws back for a second straight night, came out to retrieve the bat, as this golden labs are prone to do (at least this one), unaware that the ball was still in play and Raburn might have a chance for an inside-the-park home run....... That wasn't lost on the umpire, of course, who tried to herd Jake out of the way before he could clamp his chops on Raburn's bat, without much success......... Fortunately, Raburn held up at third, avoiding an incident similar to the one involving Barry Bonds son (if I'm not mistaken) during a game........ Joel Alvarado nearly beat out a 1-2 grounder to Rico Washington at third after a momentary problem with the pick-up, but it drove in Raburn to make the score 4-2........ After Ronnie Merrill made a dandy catch of a liner by Matt Ford, Rickie Weeks completed the cycle with a double that went all the way to the Gibson's BBQ sign in left field under the scoreboard....... They're still having problems with the pitch speed display there, by the way, but it's being worked on......... On occasion, you can see a number flash up there, but 39 and 46 don't seem right for a fastball. Jamie Gann, acquired from Bridgeport in the independent Atlantic League, has been an answer to our prayers after a two-game .571 start........ I could almost draw an immediate comparison between Gann's acquisition and Ryan Christenson's on July 9, 1997 at this point........ Christenson came in at a crucial point in the Stars season, when they needed a second half title to get into the playoffs, and hit .364 in his first three games, .433 after seven, and .381 in his first month for the Stars........ Although we never saw him again after August 9, Christenson was a vital part of that Western Division Championship team. In July of that year, the Stars scored a club record 224 runs and were 17-9........ It's a bit early, but the start Gann has after just two games makes you think, and the Stars do need a second half title if they want to make the playoffs....... Gann, a 29-year old veteran once a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks organization, showed off his arm in the 5th throwing out Kennard Jones at first from right field on a bee line to Prince Fielder after Merrill's fly ball. Three walks and three stolen bases (two on a double steal) led to the tie-breaking run for the Stars in the 6th, Johnny Raburn driving in the run on a sacrifice fly to left-center, but Mobile tied the game during a steady shower in the 8th........ Following a one-out walk by Paul Stewart to Jones, Josh Barfield singled past the glove of Barnwell into left. A wild pitch on a 2-1 count to Greg Sain put the runners into scoring position........ Stewart (4-1, 2.62) was in a spot. He was 2-and-2 on Rico Washington and he did not want to go full and have the runners going on 3-and-2 with the Stars trying to protect a one-run lead....... Washington turned on Stew's next pitch and lined it for a hit to right field, scoring Jones easily, but Gann came up with another outfield assist tonight........ He threw a rocket on the money to Alvarado who took a huge hit from Barfield, knocking him in the air backwards, but held on the the ball, holding it in the air for home plate ump John Woods to see. That was a big out, for Stew turned back the Bay Bears in order in the 9th, and John Novinsky did the same in the 10th, enabling the Stars to come back and win in the 10th, their sixth extra-inning victory in nine this year....... Relief pitcher Jack Cassel, who had held the Stars scoreless in five previous appearances for them this year, hit Tony Gwynn on the right elbow with his first pitch. Prince Fielder was intentionally walked for his second straight at-bat and finally, Brad Nelson got a hold of a 2-2 pitch and lined it over the infield in right-center, Gwynn racing around third to score easily for the 6-5 victory. John Novinsky notched his sixth win without a defeat, his first win since May 21...... After a 9-18 June, the worst June in Stars history, the Stars look refreshing, incapable of lying down with their feet in the air, as they had last month --- they have come back in two straight games against Mobile to win with a 24-hit outburst, hitting .290 in this series...... Although the pitching didn't hold together, they showed the kind of fortitude in the end to win games, the kind needed to take them to first place in September......... Rickie Weeks has three doubles in two games, something not seen from his bat since the first two games of the season......... Tony Gwynn is 5-for-13 in this series (.384) with two doubles........ Prince Fielder had his first four-hit game on Thursday....... Brad Nelson's game- winning hit and 2-for-4 day may wake him out of a 4-for-21 slump......... These are the bats the Stars need if they are to hope for a title, and with the addition of Jamie Gann, who's off to a 4-for-7 start, one can only wonder what tomorrow might bring. The Stars hit just .225 in June with a 4.66 ERA, following a .241 April and .242 May...... Their staff ERA in April was 3.61, 3.51 in May........ Chris Barnwell led hitters in June with a .299 average, followed by Ryan Knox (.280) who played in only 13 games, and Johnny Raburn (.277)........ Four hitters finished under the Mendoza line in June --- Joel Alvarado (.095), Ozzie Chavez (.169), Tony Gwynn, Jr. (.198), and Kade Johnson (.195).......... Ryan Knox has been placed on the disabled list by the Stars. To fill the roster spot, Roberto Giron returns from Indianapolis, giving us two closers and a pleasant dilemma for Frank....... Giron was 3-0 with a 2.87 ERA and 2 saves at Indy, but was caught in a numbers game when Ben Ford was outrighted for assignment to Indianapolis by the Brewers. Giron last pitched on June 29 --- a scoreless inning against Buffalo. He is scheduled to arrive Saturday....... He had a 1.42 ERA and eight saves when he was promoted on May 14.

  20. So do they, like, run round the bases? The warning track? Horse Race to Be Held During San Jose Game SaturdayThe San Jose Giants announced that they have added to the festivities that fans will enjoy at the July 3rd Fireworks Extravaganza game with a special live horse race that will be held in between innings during the Giants game versus the High Desert Mavericks. The two-horse race will feature ?Majic? and ?Dijon,? a pair of retired thoroughbred race horses that live at the Willow Pond Ranch in Soquel, CA. Fans will be able to meet the two horses up close prior to the race and have the opportunity to make a donation to the horse rescue program. All fans that make a one dollar donation will receive a red or blue raffle ticket that will match up with one of the two horses. At the conclusion of the race, the number of the winning ticket will be announced and that fan will split the donation money with the Willow Pond Ranch. Other prizes that night will include horse riding lessons at Willow Pond Ranch. Willow Pond Ranch is a horse sanctuary where retired racing and non-racing horses are cared for and placed in a program that bring people closer to these beautiful animals. Willow Pond Ranch offers a variety of riding programs for children and adults to participate in that include Western, English, Dressage and Jumping classes. ?This is a wonderful opportunity for or fans to see these horses up close...learn something about them and then see them in action with a live race across the Municipal Stadium outfield,? said San Jose Giants General Manager Mark Wilson.
  21. Beloit Daily News Game Story: Beloit snaps slump By Charlie Corr Daily News staff writer After losing three straight games on the road to Burlington, the Beloit Snappers were certainly happy to be back home, if only for a minute two-game set. And cellar-dwelling Beloit was able to put aside its skid against the Eastern Division-leading Fort Wayne Wizards. Snappers reserve third baseman Wandel Campana came in and hit a go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to lead the Snappers to a 4-2 victory in Midwest League action Friday night at Pohlman Field. ``Campana came up with a key base hit,'' Snappers manager Don Money said. ``He also sac-bunted for a hit. That's a part of his game.'' Even though Campana is the newest Snapper, he brings some veteran experience with him, playing for Dayton two years ago. Campana took Adam Heether's place at the hot corner in the fourth inning because Heether felt some discomfort in his lower back. (Answers earlier question -- MB) ``He's an older guy that knows how to play,'' Money said. ``He's not going after 15 home runs. He's going to move runners over.'' In the sixth inning, the Snappers rallied with two runs. Vinny Rottino hit an RBI single to left to drive in Drew Anderson to tie the game at 2-2. And Campana followed with a run-scoring single to left to bring in Lou Palmisano for a lead the Snappers would never relinquish. The Wizards did not put together much damage, but they scored their runs in the clutch. Fort Wayne scored both runs with two outs. Fort Wayne came up short, however, as Snappers starter Luis Pena and reliever Mitch Stetter shook off some early problems to piece together a well-rounded effort. They held Fort Wayne to six hits. The Wizards looked like they would rally in the seventh, greeting Statter with two, 2-out singles. But left fielder Drew Anderson made a nice sliding catch to rob Brian Wahlbrink of a base hit, stranding both runners and ending the inning. Stetter really beared down after that, striking out the side in the top of the eighth inning and closing out the ballgame with his fourth save of the year. ``Stetter's been pitching well for us,'' Money said. ``He picked up four innings against Burlington earlier in the week and didn't give up a run. So he's been pretty solid.'' Pena (7-3) was king of the ground ball. He got six rollers destined toward his infielders in the first three innings. Five went to Will Lewis over at second. He finished with four strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. Beloit added to its lead in the seventh when Lewis battled against Fort Wayne reliever Paul Abraham. Lewis eventually blooped a single to right, and Terry Trofholz scored all the way from first base to to give the squad a 4-2 lead. Wizards starting pitcher Chris Tierny (1-1) suffered his first loss. He went six innings, allowing seven hits and three runs, striking out two. With the game tied at 1-1, Fort Wayne scored a go-ahead run with Juan Ciriaco's RBI double in the top of the fifth. His drive was just out reach of Anderson in left. Drew Macias scored all the way from first for the 2-1 lead. The Snappers avoided equaling their longest losing streak of the year. And with today's home game on their itinerary, the Snappers might as well get some momentum going into an eight-game road trip that starts on Sunday. ``In Burlington we just seemed to make mistakes over there,'' Money said. ``Couple errors here, a bad play there. But tonight we got the runs in.'' NOTES: Left-hander Greg Kloosterman (1-5) will start for Beloit today (7 p.m.), hoping to lower his lofty 10.08 earned run average. Opposing Kloosterman will be Fort Wayne right-hander David Mead (0-0), who will be making just his second start and seventh appearance.

  23. High Desert Game Summary from the Giants' Site: The San Jose Giants defeated the High Desert Mavericks 4-0 Friday evening at Municipal Stadium in front of 3,213 fans on a night that featured postgame fireworks. A night after jumping on the Mavericks for ten runs in the first inning, the Giants once again bolted to an early lead by scoring four in the opening inning off High Desert starter David Bradley. The scoring began with a Fred Lewis walk and a Nate Schierholtz single. Angel Chavez then singled to right field to drive in Lewis. The hit was followed by a Carlos Sosa walk to load the bases. With one out the scoring outburst continued with a Brad Vericker two run single. Brian Buscher then followed with a single to score Sosa. The four runs were more than enough for Giants starter Brian Burres who pitched his third consecutive outing without allowing an earned run. Burres allowed six hits and struck out six in seven innings of work. The Giants bullpen was strong in relief as Billy Sadler and James Garcia preserved the shutout. However, the Mavericks threatened to even it up as they loaded the bases in the top of the ninth. Enrique Cruz led off the inning getting hit by a James Garcia pitch which was then followed by a single by Kennard Bibbs. With two outs, Travis Hinton reached on an infield single to load the bases before Garcia struck out John Vanden Berg to end the game. The Giants continue their three game series with High Desert on Saturday, July 3 with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 P.M. (8:30 Central) at San Jose Municipal Stadium. 25. Huntsville Times Game Story: Nelson gains redemption Single in 10th gives Stars 6-5 victory over Mobile By MARK McCARTER Times Sports Staff markcolumn@aol.com Brad Nelson had a pretty solid strategy for his final at-bat Friday night. "Not what I did the at-bat before,'' Nelson said. "The at-bat before'' was a fly ball to left, as lazy as a summer Sunday afternoon. It could have given the Huntsville Stars a lead. Instead, it doused a rally against the Mobile BayBears. He got a mulligan in the 10th inning. After Tony Gwynn Jr. was hit by a pitch from Jack Cassel and Prince Fielder was walked intentionally, Nelson socked a single to right-center, sending Gwynn home with the winning run in a 6-5 thriller in front of an announced crowd of 4,169. "I got a good pitch to hit the time before and didn't hit it,'' Nelson said. "He (Cassel) threw a couple of balls and I knew he didn't want to walk me, so I wanted to see a ball up and put it in play.'' John Novinsky collected his sixth win of the season (to go along with seven saves) with a perfect 10th inning of work. It was another night of resiliency for Huntsville, coming back three times from either a tie or a deficit; the Stars came from behind three times to win Thursday. Under eerie skies, with lightning streaks in the distance and ominous clouds in a canopy above the stadium - "I was kind of enjoying it,'' manager Frank Kremblas said - things got off to a thunderous start. Maybe it's what should have been expected, since the marquee all but screamed "pitchers' duel.'' Huntsville's highly touted Matt Ford, who spent '03 in the majors, faced Mobile's Chris Rojas, the starting pitcher for the SL West in the upcoming All-Star Game. Greg Sain of Mobile triggered it with a homer in the second. No big news there. He had 22 homers coming in - and 22 singles. Steve Morales clubbed one two outs later. Then the Stars' offense came back with an answer. And Rojas pitched for the cycle in one inning's time. First, a Nelson single. Then an opposite field homer by Jamie Gann, the newcomer who was 3-for-4 in his debut Thursday. Chris Barnwell followed with a homer, Johnny Raburn tripled and, with two outs, Rickie Weeks doubled. "Rojas only had one bad inning,'' Kremblas said, "but he got some balls up over the plate and we were ready to hit.'' Alas, the Stars' 4-3 lead didn't have much shelf-life. A two-run homer by Ben Johnson off Ford in the fourth tied things up. After Rojas issued two walks in the sixth, Raburn tapped reliever Alan Webb for a sacrifice fly and a 5-4 lead. However, further damage was avoided when Gann was thrown out on the play, center to short to third, to end the inning. Huntsville reliever Paul Stewart loaded the bases in the eighth and a Rico Washington single chased home Kennard Jones with the fifth Mobile run. Gann saved things with a perfect throw from right on the hit, nailing Josh Barfield at home in a violent collision with catcher Joel Alvarado. On Mobile's last at-bat, with Ronnie Merrill at the plate, a violent collision between baseball and Novinsky's noggin was avoided. It was a screaming line drive Novinsky somehow snagged. Self-defense? "Absolutely,'' Novinsky grinned. After his catch, he walked nonchalantly toward the dugout, letting the ball casually drop to the ground. Had it all the way. Just like the Stars did.
