  2. Huntsville Game Summary: A win like Tuesday?s can be a springboard for success. The Stars trailed 6-0 into the bottom of the seventh. Despite stranding 11 baserunners from the fifth through the eighth ? three straight innings ended with the bases loaded ? Huntsville was still in the game. Still down by three in the ninth, Chris Barnwell rescued the Stars, slamming a three-run homer to tie the game. Minutes later, Ozzie Chavez singled home Joel Alvarado for a walk-off win over Jacksonville, 7-6, at Joe Davis Stadium. Huntsville pulled within two games of first in the Southern League West, pending the outcome of leader West Tenn?s game versus Mobile. The comeback began in the seventh when Chavez walked with two outs. Pitcher Jason Shelley reached when his hot two-hopper skipped past second baseman Willie Aybar for an error. Johnny Raburn walked to load the bases, and Tony Gwynn Jr. delivered his third hit of the game, a two-run single to left. After Prince Fielder?s walk loaded the bases again, Brad Nelson lined out to third to end the inning. In the eighth, Jason Belcher led off with a single and took second on Alvarado?s one-out single. After Chavez lined out deep to right, pinch-hitter Rickie Weeks walked to load the bases. Raburn walked for the second straight frame, scoring Belcher to cut the Suns? lead to 6-3. Gwynn hit into a force at third to squelch the threat. Finally in the ninth, Huntsville attacked Suns closer Yhency Brazoban. Fielder led off with a double deep to left-center, and one out later Belcher singled to left. Barnwell stepped up as the tying run, and promptly hit a line-smash over the wall in the leftfield corner, his second homer this season, to tie the game, 6-6. Barnwell?s 24 runs batted in rank third behind only Fielder and Nelson on the Stars? roster. Following the Barnwell blast, Alvarado walked on five pitches. Brazoban uncorked a wild pitch that caromed off catcher Edwin Bellorin toward the first-base dugout. Alvarado reached third with a headfirst dive, just beating Bellorin?s throw from behind the on-deck circle. On a 2-2 pitch from Brazoban, Chavez singled to left-center, the ball glancing off Wilkin Ruan?s glove as he chased into the alley from center. Fernando Rijo (1-2) grabbed his first win after fanning one in a scoreless and hitless ninth. Brazoban (3-2) suffered his second loss, surrendering four runs on four hits and two walks in two-thirds of an inning. Huntsville rests Wednesday and opens a four-game series on Thursday night at Joe Davis Stadium against the Mobile Bay Bears, Stars when right-hander Tim Bausher (1-4, 2.89) meets Bears righty Chris Rojas (3-3, 4.73). Game time is 7:05 p.m.
  3. In a bit of a surprise, the Brewers have promoted High Desert RHP Glenn Woolard to AA Huntsville. Taking Woolard's spot on the Maverick roster is RHP Dan Kolb, activated from the disabled list. Woolard just turned 23, and along with Beloit RHP Carlos Villanueva, came to the Brewers from San Francisco for pitchers Wayne Franklin and Leo Estrella. He started 2004 very hot, and has struggled a bit as of late, but is still striking out more than a batter an inning this season. Best wishes to Glenn in AA. 4. High Desert Pre-Game Notes: By the way, the Ports are starting Jose Garcia tonight, but it's not the former Brewer farmhand and Power 50 member. TONIGHT: The Mavericks open up a three-game series with the Stockton Ports (Rangers). It?s the first meeting of the season for these two teams and the Ports only visit to Mavericks Stadium. High Desert is 1-2 against the Northern Division so far this season. The Mavericks have won two straight for the first time since May 4th and 5th when they won two from Lake Elsinore. High Desert has not won three in a row this season. LAST NIGHT: Troy Farnsworth clobbered a grand slam, the first of the season for the Mavericks, lifting High Desert to a 6-3 win over the Storm. It was the Mavs second road win in a row, only done once previously this season. Manny Parra worked five and a third innings for his first win and Homero Rivera fired a scoreless ninth for his first save. Dan Boyd scored two runs, Froilan Villanueva had an RBI double and scored a run, but Callix Crabbe?s 11-game hitting streak came to an end, tying the Mavericks longest hitting streak of the season. SPEED DEMONS: High Desert stole another base last night, improving their California League leading total to 66. Chris Morris is second in the league lead with 22 steals, despite missing the last 17 games, Kennard Bibbs is tied for fourth with 15 and Crabbe is sixth with 14. ON DECK: The Mavs are in the midst of a stretch where they play 13 out of 16 games on the road. After this brief three-game home series with Stockton, High Desert hits the road for nine straight starting with three over the weekend at Inland Empire. After an off day Monday, they travel to Modesto for three and then conclude the trip with three at Visalia.
  5. Final: Kane County (A's) 4, Beloit 2 Three losses after the seven consecutive wins... Beloit Game Summary from the Cougars' Site: The Kane County Cougars beat the Beloit Snappers for the fourth straight time 4?2 Tuesday afternoon at Elfstrom Stadium. Steve Bondurant gave up an early home run but settled down to win again, while the Cougars blasted three home runs on the day to stay in first place in the Western division standings. The Snappers (24?21) jumped to the lead in the first inning when Adam Heether hit a two run home run over the left field wall to take a 2?0 advantage. The Cougars would tie the game in the bottom of the inning on another two run homer, this time by Brian Snyder over the right-center field wall to tie the game at 2?2. Kane County (28?16) would play long ball again in the third inning when Luke Appert blasted his fourth home run of the season to take a 3?2 lead. The Cougars would add to the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning when Nick Rogers hit his first homer of the year, a solo shot to make it a 4?2 game. Cougars starting pitcher Steve Bondurant posted his sixth straight win and becomes the league's only eight game winner. The left-hander went seven innings giving up two runs, scattering seven hits with 13 strikeouts. At one point Bondurant retired 14 straight hitters in the Beloit lineup. The Cougars continue to be the league?s hottest team, winning eight of their last nine games and are 12 games over the .500 mark for the first time this year. The Cougars will face the Snappers in game three of the four game set Wednesday night in a 6:00 p.m. contest at Elfstrom Stadium. The Midwest League leader in strikeouts Brad Knox will take the mound while the Snappers will counter with left-hander Dana Eveland. Beloit Box Score: 8500+ in attendance just outside Chicago... 8. Stars have trouble scoring A cadaver helps limit Huntsville hitters to one run By PAUL GATTIS Times Sports Staff pgattis@htimes.com The jokes were easy with this one. Jacksonville Suns pitcher Derek Thompson grinned and said it was "pretty cool having a piece of dead guy bone in me." Huntsville Stars manager Frank Kremblas quipped that Thompson was a "dead man walking." And if the Stars need any consolation after their 3-1 loss to the Suns on Monday before 719 at Joe Davis Stadium, just remember this: Thompson is more than just a man. He's two. OK, an explanation: Thompson pitched seven sharp innings, allowing four hits and one run in improving his record to 2-2 and halting the Stars' four-game winning streak. He's an intriguing story as he pitched deeper into the game than he has all season after coming off Tommy John surgery - in which a ligament was taken from his left wrist and transplanted to his left elbow. But what's really intriguing is Thompson's left knee. In 2001, he wrecked the cartilage under the knee cap playing basketball. An attempted effort to heal the knee included shaving down part of the bone in his knee. When that didn't work, a second surgery included taking bone from a cadaver and blending it into the bone in his knee. Thompson described it as being a "chunk (of bone) about the size of a nickel." Then he had to hope that his body would accept the new chunk of bone and that his cartilage would attach itself. Obviously, this was not your everyday knee surgery. Actually, when Tommy John surgery is only the second-most unique surgery you've ever had, you're a walking, talking conversation piece. But Thompson didn't blink when doctors told him of their plan to use bone from a cadaver to make him better. "Whatever it took to get me back out there playing again," Thompson said. Forgive the Stars, though, if they don't rejoice in his comebacks after missing part of the 2001 season and all of last season with the injuries. The Stars took a 1-0 lead in the third when Ozzie Chavez reached on an infield single and scored on a two-out single by Rickie Weeks. Stars starter Chris Saenz battled gallantly, allowing a base runner in all seven innings he pitched but surrendering only one run. His defense backed him up nicely, throwing two Suns runners out at home in the fourth inning. But Jacksonville got a solo homer in the eighth from Brennan King off Stars reliever Pete Zamora (0-1) and added another run in the ninth for just its fourth win in the last 14 games. And with the surgically-repaired, new-and-improved Thompson pitching, that was a surplus of runs. "(Thompson) threw well," Kremblas said. "He threw all three pitches for strikes and had good command of his fastball. That was the difference." Not bad for a dead man walking.
  9. This was explained the other day here; it's not like interleague play in the majors, or postseason play. The only time a DH is not used is when both affiliates are National League teams. With only two A.L. affiliated teams in the Southern League, Huntsville rarely gets to use a DH. So a team like Durham (AAA Tampa Bay) never sees its pitchers bat. And of course, below AA, pitchers don't bat at all.

  15. High Desert staff has offered to pass on their game notes daily, which we appreciate. Sometimes these notes can be a bit repetitive in parts day-to-day, so I'll try to limit daily entries to new or expanded updates. So to Roxy and HD staff, thanks, and keep them coming. We won't quibble if you forget on the occasional day or two... TONIGHT: The Mavs play the final game of a four-game series at the Lake Elsinore Strom (Padres). The Mavericks are entering a stretch where they play 13 out of 16 on the road. High Desert just finished a six-game homestand against Lake Elsinore and Inland Empire where they went 3-3. The Storm has a 8-5 edge on the season series with the Mavericks, winning the first two in this series and won two out of three played at The Diamond April 27 ? 29. The Mavericks have had their troubles on the road this season, posting a 6-15 record and snapped an eight-game road losing streak yesterday. YESTERDAY: The Mavericks pulled out their biggest come-from-behind win if the season yesterday, erasing a 7-1 deficit and defeated the Storm 9-7. High Desert scored seven runs in the sixth inning all with two outs, highlighted by Troy Farnsworth?s three-run double, as ten straight Mavericks reached base. Pete Rasmusen had three hits and drove in two and Callix Crabbe had three hits and extended his hitting streak to 11 games, matching a season best for the Mavs. Eric Henderson picked up the win in relief and David Bradley worked the final two innings for his first save. START ME UP: The Mavericks are in their 14th season in the California League and the fourth as the high A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. It has been a successful run in the desert for the Mavs, capturing three Cal League championships (1991, 1993 and 1997), plus have qualified for the playoffs seven times. 18. Huntsville Times Game Story: Prince no longer pauper at Fielder's homer ends slump, gives Stars victory[/i] By BROOKE MILAM Huntsville Stars fans have learned to put down their peanuts and Cracker Jacks when Prince Fielder steps to the plate. "Hopefully I can keep making them pay attention," he said. He gave the crowd of 1,569 something to watch Sunday afternoon at Joe Davis Stadium. Fielder's two-run homer in the fourth inning gave the Stars their first lead in a 6-1 win over the Jacksonville Suns. The son of former major-leaguer Cecil Fielder, the Stars first baseman has driven in 33 runs and hit 10 home runs this season, tying him for third in the league. But after earning Southern League Hitter of the Week honors for April 30-May 6, Fielder fell into a slump and was 3-for-40 in the last 10 games before Sunday. "It was mostly mental. I wasn't feeling good at the plate and I was thinking too much," Fielder said. "I feel better up there now. That doesn't mean I'll get a hit, but I feel good." Nelson Castro homered for the Suns in the first inning, before Fielder's shot knocked in Tony Gwynn Jr. Brad Nelson added another run in the fourth for the Stars against Suns starter Randy Leek. "Prince got a good hitting count and drove it into the speaker stand," Stars manager Frank Kremblas said. "But their starter did a good job early, getting the ball down and getting the umpire down there with him." Fielder, 20, is the youngest player on the Huntsville roster. "One thing to remember is we aren't talking about a bunch of veterans here, these are some young guys," Kremblas said. "They are still learning and they know I understand that." The Stars (24-20) broke the game open in the sixth with three more runs. Chris Barnwell and Joel Alvarado scored when Paul Stewart reached on an error before Johnny Raburn drove in the Stars' final run. Jeff Housman (1-2) earned the win for the Stars, striking out four while giving up three hits and a run. Housman went six innings before being relieved by Stewart. Leek (1-3) took the loss for Jacksonville (23-21). The Stars also bid a fond farewell to the current scoreboard that was to be taken down following the game. Manual scoring will be used for the series' remaining games before the unveiling of the new scoreboard. The Stars have outscored the Suns 16-2 in the first two games and own a four-game winning streak as the series continues tonight at 7:05.

  22. I will admit to being a fan of the weather as far as Indianapolis is concerned this week. After hosting Durham tonight, the Tribe flies to Rhode Island for a four-game series in Pawtucket. I'll be taking in games 2 and 4 on Wednesday and Friday, and as of now, will be seeing Jorge de la Rosa and Ben Hendrickson in the two contests, with seats just behind the Indy dugout -- psyched! Be looking for me guys, not many fans will de decked out in Brewer apparel -- I'll likely be a minority of one!
