We might get a quick response to the High Desert (or perhaps Huntsville) third base situation. The Brewers purchased the contract today of infielder Troy Farnsworth from the independent Northern League's Sioux Falls Canaries. Farnsworth is 28 years old; he was the Cardinals' 32nd round pick back in 1998, out of Brigham Young University. St. Louis let him go during his fifth year in their system, 2002. He finished up that year in high-A with the Phillies' system. Last year he found himself with Sioux Falls, where in 19 games (14 at third), he hit .221 in 68 AB's. Farnsworth has never hit for average. His best year was at age 24 in the high-A Carolina League, where he hit .240 with 23 HR's and 113 RBI. Beloit Game Summary (from the Burlington site): The Burlington Bees (13?26) had the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but Ty Taubenheim struck out Chris Lubanski on a 3?2 pitch to preserve the Beloit Snappers (21?18) 3?2 win at Community Field this afternoon. The win gave the Snappers a sweep of the four?game series and extended the Bees losing streak to a season?high six games. Bees' starter Greg Atencio (2?4) allowed all three runs (two earned) in 6.2 innings. The Snappers scored first in the top of the first inning. Leadoff man Guilder Rodriguez hit a tap to first, but Kila Kaaihue's underhand flip went over the head of Atencio covering at first for an error as Rodriguez raced all the way to second. Drew Anderson drove in Rodriguez with a double to left?center field to make it 1?0. In the second, Atencio issued a two?out walk to Tim Marks who then moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Agustin Septimo through the right side of the infield giving the Snappers a 2?0 lead. The Bees got on the board in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a pair of Snappers errors. With two outs, Bryan Graham walked and went to second on a single by Luis Gonzalez. Kila Kaaihue hit a grounder to second that got booted by Rodriguez for an error and Graham came in to score. Jeff Barry reached on an error by Adam Heether at third to load the bases, but Lubanski grounded out to first to end the inning. The Snappers added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Carlos Corporan singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Marks. Septimo flied out to center to move Corporan to third and Rodriguez drove him in with a single to center field. Steve Bray came in after the single and pitched an inning and a third of scoreless relief. Dusty Dosett pitched a scoreless ninth. Snappers' starter Brian Montalbo (3?2) allowed just the one unearned run in seven innings for the win. Tim Dillard pitched a scoreless eighth and Taubenheim came on for the ninth. Kenard Springer and Brandon Powell opened the inning with singles and Graham walked to load the bases. Gonzalez drove in Springer with a sacrifice fly to center to bring the Bees to within 3?2. Kaaihue walked to load the bases, but Barry bounced to third and the Snappers got a force out at the plate for the second out of the inning before Taubenheim struck out Lubanski to end the ballgame. -

One of the thinnest positions depth-wise in the Brewer chain took a hit today as High Desert third baseman Jeff Eure has been placed on the DL with a fracture of his left hamate bone. Eure had to leave a game in mid at-bat a couple of nights ago. Eure had played in 37 of the Mavs' 38 games at 3B thus far. Only Jeremy Frost and Froilan Villanueva have seen action at 3B this year (one game apiece). Eure, 24 this coming August, was the Brewers' 18th round pick in 2001. He shows occasional power, but still was struggling this season with a .643 OPS. No subsequent move has been announced, but may we suggest a Vinny Rottino (five games at 3B with Beloit) experiment? Indianapolis Post-Game Press Release: Indianapolis bounced back from a 7-0 deficit Tuesday afternoon to defeat the Columbus Clippers, 15-11. After the Clippers scored six runs in the third inning, Indianapolis rallied for 10 runs in the fourth inning. The Tribe added three more runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to wrap up the victory. The two rivals combined for 30 hits. Tribe reliever Roberto Giron (1-0), who recently joined the club from Double-A Huntsville, threw three innings, allowing no runs on two hits, striking out five. Indianapolis is now 21-15 and Columbus falls to 18-18. The Tribe stretches its lead to three games over the Clippers in the IL West Division. Jon Nunnally led the potent Tribe offense with four hits and Corey Hart and Jeff Liefer each added three hits. QUOTES: Indians designated hitter Jon Nunnally: "I just wanted to duplicate what I did last night," Nunnally said. "We just got some hits there and the pitchers kept us in the game. I knew that when we were down 7-0, we could chip away at the lead. Being at home, I knew we?d have the last ups and we just kept our heads up and kept going." Indians right fielder, Corey Hart: "We?re a team that can score a lot of runs," said Hart. "Once we get on a roll, we can dominate. We?ve come back before. We keep competing. A lot of young guys are on this team and guys that have been in the big leagues. Everybody has the same goals. Hart on manager Cecil Cooper: "Coop?s helped me out a lot with my offense," said Hart. "I?ve moved up on the plate a little bit and it?s helped a lot." Tribe center fielder Ryan Knox on the victory: "Our offense just caught on today," said Knox. "This was a fun game to win. We?ve done this a few times this year. We have not been a consistent team hitting the ball, but today everything worked well. It just happened." NOTES: Roberto Giron earned his first victory of the season in his first appearance with the Tribe this year. Giron was the closer for last year?s Indians club. The 10 runs scored in the fourth inning was an Indians season high. Ben Hendrickson started the game and was on a 50-pitch count before exiting after two innings of play. Chris Magruder, Jeff Liefer and Luis Figueroa each extended their hitting streaks to five games. Indianapolis is 11-4 against IL West Division opponents and 10-7 at home. Brewerfan net fans: A new thread has been started on the Ben Hendrickson Saturday call-up speculation on the Major League forum. Please continue any discussion on the subject there -- thanks - MB. -

Huntsville Times Game Story: Stars finish series 2-2 against Braves following 5-4 loss By PAUL GATTIS Times Sports Staff pgattis@htimes.com The disclaimer came from each end of the clubhouse, from third baseman Chris Barnwell to manager Frank Kremblas. This is what each said following the Huntsville Stars' 5-4 loss to Greenville on Monday night: "We're not playing poorly," Barnwell said. "We're not playing bad," Kremblas said. Still, each realized that the Stars had just split a four-game series with the Braves - who have the worst record in the Southern League. And while the Stars scored all four of their runs in the third inning, it also meant that they've not scored in 17 of their last 18 innings, going back to Sunday's 6-0 loss. "It's not disappointing," Kremblas said of the series split with the Braves. "I'm concerned with everything that's going on in why we lose. We had a chance to drive guys in and we didn't do it. We made bad base-running decisions." Indeed, more of Monday's game before 1,185 at Joe Davis Stadium was about what the Stars didn't do rather than what they did do. The Stars had two runners on with one out in both the first and second innings and didn't score. Then in the fourth, Prince Fielder lined to second baseman Brent Butler, who doubled off Tony Gwynn Jr. after he broke for second. With those opportunities missed, the Stars had only three base runners over the final five innings. Of course, it's not as if the Stars' season is spiraling to a crash. With a 20-18 record, they're in third place in the Western Division - 1 1/2 games behind front-running West Tenn with a little more than a month left in the first half. And for all the frustrations of Monday's loss, the Stars still rallied from a 3-0 deficit - highlighted for Greenville in the second inning with a two-run homer by third baseman Andy Marte, the top prospect in the Braves' organization - to seize a 4-3 lead in the third inning. Gwynn Jr. and Brad Nelson singled to put runners at first and third. Jason Belcher singled with two outs to score Gwynn Jr. Then Barnwell lined a triple to center that scored Nelson and Belcher and came around to score himself on the play when Braves shortstop Tony Pena mishandled the throw to the infield. That rally meant something even though the Braves scored two in the fifth for the 5-4 lead off losing pitcher Dennis Sarfate (1-4). "Sure, it does," Barnwell said. "They got up and we came back. Unfortunately, they kept scoring more runs." -

Beloit Game Summary (from the Burlington site): The Burlington Bees (13?25) have equaled their longest losing streak of the season with their fifth straight loss, 7?3 tonight to the Beloit Snappers (20?18) at Community Field. The Bees also lost five straight earlier this month from May 2?6. The Snappers scored all of their runs before the Bees got on the board. Steve Moss got it started with a solo home run as the second batter of the ballgame against Bees right?hander Robbie McClellan (1?1) who was making his first start of the year. The Snappers broke it open against McClellan in the fourth. With one out, Drew Anderson singled and scored on a double by Lou Palmisano to make it 2?0. Vinny Rottino followed with a triple to left?center field to make it 3?0 and Adam Heether made it 4?0 with a double to right?center. The final run came as Heether scored after a throwing error by Mitch Maier at third base. McClellan got out of the inning, but was chased after a single and a double put runners on second and third with nobody out to start the fifth. John Gragg took over and allowed one runner to score on a sacrifice fly by Anderson before closing out the inning. The Snappers got their final run against Gragg in the seventh as Anderson doubled and scored on a single by Palmisano. Brad Stiles and Jake Mullis finished the game with a scoreless inning apiece. Snappers' starter Luis Pena (4?0) allowed just four hits in 6.2 innings while walking two and striking out three. He left the game with a runner at first and two outs in the seventh. Dan McKenna came in and threw two wild pitches and walked two batters to load the bases before giving up a double to Brian McFall down the left field line to bring in two and get the Bees on the board. McKenna left without retiring a batter and turned it over to Dan Grybash who got Chris Lubanski to pop out to end the inning. Angel Sanchez doubled to lead off the eighth, but was stranded and the Bees made one last attempt in the ninth. Grybash walked Adam Donachie and Kila Kaaihue to start the inning and hit McFall with a pitch on the left wrist to load the bases. McFall had to leave the game and will get x?rays. Jeff Barry pinch?ran. Lubanski struck out, but Sanchez singled to center to drive in a run and make it 7?3. The Snappers then turned to Mitch Stetter who struck out Mitch Maier and got Kenard Springer to pop out to end the game for his first save. The Bees and Snappers conclude this series tomorrow morning at 11:30AM on D.A.R.E. Day at Community Field sponsored by the Great River Medical Center. RH Greg Atencio (2?3, 5.21) will start for the Bees against RH Brian Montalbo (2?2, 5.15) for Beloit. -

Indianapolis Post-Game Notes: Jeff Liefer jump started the Indianapolis Indians Monday night with a first inning two-run homer, leading the Tribe to a 12-4 win over IL West Division rival Columbus. Liefer scored four runs in the contest, a team high for the season and knocked in three runs. Jon Nunnally added three hits to the Tribe hit total which peaked at 15. Indianapolis is now 20-15, Columbus falls to 18-17, two games behind the first place Tribe. Travis Phelps (3-1) pitched five innings, allowing three runs on six hits, walked two and struck out three. The Clippers hit three homers in the contest, including back-back shots in the sixth inning by Andy Phillips and Michael Vento. QUOTES: Indians starting pitcher Travis Phelps: "In the first inning, I walked a batter and was a little unsettled," said Phelps. "I settled into the game well with the help of Alex Delgado. Alex called a great game. I did a good job after the first inning and we?ve been battling every day. They?ve been playing very well and we?d like to continue our success." Jeff Liefer on his offensive production: "It?s really a lot of luck," said Liefer. "The credit for my success has to go to the guys hitting behind me, Nunnally and Chris Magruder. We didn?t play too well on the road trip. It?s good to beat them." Jon Nunnally on tonight?s win: "We didn?t want to give Columbus a push,"said Nunnally. "When you play a team like Columbus, you want to get ahead early in the game. We swung the bat really well tonight. Liefer?s first inning home run was very important. He got a curve ball and hit it well." NOTES: Liefer has been named the Windsor Jewelers Indians Player of the Month for April and will be recognized at Wednesday?s 2 p.m. game with the Clippers at Victory Field. Tribe designated hitters coming into Monday night?s game were hitting .152 (12-79, three homers and 13 RBI). Nunnally went three for four with a run scored. The Columbus Clippers bullpen had not allowed an earned run in over 10 innings pitched prior to tonight. The Clippers have hit back-to-back homers four times this season. Tribe reliever Dan Reichert now has a league-leading .089 ERA after tonight?s two inning performance. Tuesday?s probables are Indianapolis RHP Ben Hendrickson (3-1, 2.37) vs. Columbus RHP Eric Schmitt (1-0, 1.80) on Baseball In Education Day. Opening pitch is set for 11 a.m. and more than 8,000 students are expected to visit the ballpark Tuesday. -

Huntsville Site Game Summary: In a see-saw affair on Monday night, Greenville blew a 3-0 lead but rallied for a 5-4 win over Huntsville at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars (20-18) dropped two straight to split the series with the G-Braves (12-26). Huntsville remained 1 ½ games out of first in the Southern League West with West Tenn?s loss to Montgomery. Andy Marte?s two-run homer, his only hit of the series, and Tony Pena, Jr.?s run-scoring double put Greenville up, 3-0, in the second. Jason Belcher singled home the Stars? first run in the third. Then with runners at first and third and two outs, Chris Barnwell tripled to left-center to score Brad Nelson and Belcher, and Barnwell sprinted home when the shortstop Pena dropped the throw in from the outfield. Trailing 4-3 in the fifth, pitcher Daniel Curtis led off with a single and took second on Adam Stern?s infield-single. After Napoleon Calzado walked to load the bases, Brent Butler lifted a sacrifice fly deep to center, plating Curtis with the tying run and sending runners to second and third. Cory Aldridge scored on a wild pitch to give Greenville a 5-4 lead. The combination of three G-Braves relievers, Alec Zumwalt, Dave Elder and Jaime Emiliano, shut out Huntsville over the final four innings. Daniel Curtis (1-0) picked up his first win, surrendering four runs, three earned, on nine hits and two walks with six strikeouts in five innings. Dennis Sarfate (1-4) suffered his fourth straight loss, permitting five earned runs on eight hits and three walks with four strikeouts over five frames. Huntsville travels to Birmingham to open a four-game series Tuesday night at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. Lefty Jeff Housman (0-2, 3.31) takes the mound for Huntsville. Game time is 7 p.m. -

Here's an obscure name for all but the media guide diehards among us, but the Brewers apparently released RHP Nick Bates earlier this spring. Bates' Brewer career consisted of all of one appearance (two innings) for the Arizona Brewers before he underwent surgery (elbow, I believe). Here's what we wrote last summer: Bates completed his Michigan State career in 2002, with a very nice senior year (9-3, 2.97 ERA, 7 CG, 30 BB and 100 K in 88 IP), and was Kansas City's 22nd round selection in the 2002 June draft, but apparently never signed with the Royals. Earlier this year, Bates was pitching in relief in the independent Frontier League with Evansville. He was given his release there on June 20th, and signed with the Brewers shortly after that. Not sure what the circumstances were that kept the Royals from coming to an agreement with Bates, but he's Brewer property now... There was also a nice hometown "feel-good" article about his signing, but darn those links that now require archive fees. Sorry, the Brewerfan.net fund doesn't have the $5.00 http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/ohwell.gif . Have to remember to cut and paste when possible... So not sure if Bates is healthy (he's 24 years old now, so he would have had to have shown enough to be let's say, High Desert worthy), but if he never throws another pitch for an affiliated minor league team, his career in that sense will be just that one game. So good luck to Nick on the off chance he sees this... -

Huntsville Times Game Story: Stars have little to shout about in shutout Greenville's pitching stumps Stars, 6-0 By BROOKE MILAM For The Times Right fielder Brad Nelson summed up the feeling in the Stars' clubhouse after the Greenville Braves blanked Huntsville 6-0 Sunday afternoon at Joe Davis Stadium. "It's over. We've got to come back (today) and hope it's not a repeat," Nelson said. "It was just a quiet day. We've come back the first couple of games in this series, but we just couldn't get anything started ..." The loss was the first in the four-game series against Atlanta's Double-A affiliate. The series finale is tonight at 7:05. Nelson was a bright spot for the Stars, accounting for two of Huntsville's three hits. Second baseman Rickie Weeks had the only other hit. Nelson had a double and a single in his three at-bats. Nelson hit homers in the series' first two games and is tied for third in the Southern League with eight. Teammate Prince Fielder is tied for second with nine. "Probably some fans show up consistently and know," Nelson said of the streak. "But any added pressure just comes from myself." The G-Braves jumped on the Stars early with a run in the first inning. Braves left-hander Dan Meyer (3-1) - considered the organization's top minor league pitching prospect - struck out the side in the bottom of the first. The course for the Stars (20-17) was set. Then Greenville (11-26) blew open a tight game with four runs in the ninth. Meyer pitched seven innings and struck out eight. Tim Bausher (1-4) took the loss for the Stars, striking out seven and allowing just four hits and two runs. "We put the ball in play and had a lot of close pitches that didn't go our way," Nelson said. "We've done good the whole year and we're still up there. "If we can get a win (today) and finish out the series (winning) three of four, that would still be a heck of a series." Stars right-hander Dennis Sarfate (1-3, 5.28 ERA) faces Greenville right-hander Daniel Curtis (0-0, 3.06) tonight. Sunday's loss dropped Huntsville to third place in the Southern League West, 11/2 games behind West Tenn. -

No problem, guys. You're welcome. It'll be interesting to see who Frank Kremblas turns to as the Stars' closer with Roberto Giron now in Indianapolis. That may be Tim Bausher's eventual role, but the organization seems very interested in stretching him out to alow him to refine his overall repertoire. Brian Adams? Fernando Rijo? John Novinsky? Reggie Rivard? Paul Stewart's been valuable in the swing role. My guess is Ryan Miller, but first he needs to make his expected return from the DL. Otherwise, ninth innings could be interesting for a while... -
