Link Report for 5/9 -- J.J. Forced To Leave Game

Indianapolis Game Notes: Indianapolis defeats Ottawa Sunday afternoon, 7-2. The Tribe is now 17-11, while Ottawa falls to 13-18. The Lynx scored first on Jose Leon?s (5) solo homer off Jorge De La Rosa in the fourth. Indianapolis rallied for two runs in the sixth and five runs in the eighth, keyed by Mark Johnson?s three-run double. Indians southpaw starter Jorge De La Rosa made his best start of the season in his sixth appearance. He threw six innings, allowed one run (a solo homer to Jose Leon) in the fourth, walked one and struck out six. The Indians improve their road record to 9-4 and are 14-0 this season when leading after eight innings of play. INDIANS HIT PARADE: Mark Johnson, 2-4, 2B, 3 RBI Luis Figueroa, 1-3, R, 2 RBI INDIANS HILL TOPPERS: Jorge De La Rosa (2-2), 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K Dan Reichert, 2 IP, 1 K (11th appearance, now has IL-leading 1.05 ERA). QUOTES: Indians catcher Mark Johnson on De La Rosa?s performance: ?He?s (De La Rosa) just being more aggressive,? said Johnson. ?Jorge is staying in the strike zone longer. He threw a lot of first ball strikes and that was really important for him today.? Indians catcher Mark Johnson on his day at the plate: ?I?ve been swinging the bat pretty good lately,? said Johnson. ?Any time you can get a lead in the count, you?ve got a pretty good chance to hit some good pitches, which I was able to do. NOTES: Catcher Alex Delgado joined the team today after having passport issues. Outfielder Corey Hart is still having passport problems and may not join the team on the four-game swing to Ottawa. Shortstop J.J. Hardy left the game in the fourth inning for precautionary measures. A detailed injury report will be available Monday. Indianapolis remains in first place in the IL West Division, having held the spot since opening day at Norfolk on April 8. Last year, the club sat in first place for a mere four days (April 3-6). The Indians had lost all five decisions during Jorge De La Rosa?s previous starts. -

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update: PITCHING AND DEFENSEPitching and defense. That's what they say it takes to win games. If both teams have it on a particular night, you wait for breaks. Someone sneezes --- and he's home.........The Stars hit the ball hard all night, but Jacksonville gobbled them all up, turning over four double plays, the most since Birmingham assembled that many on June 13, 2002....... The game ended for the Stars in symbolic fashion in the 9th when Prince Fielder hit into a double play to end their half of the inning. In the end, it became a battle of the bullpens. Jeff Housman may not have allowed a run, but Jacksonville, behind by just a run, simply bided their time till Housman's time was up......... The Suns took advantage of Brian Adams in the 8th and 9th, and simply put, their bullpen beat our bullpen, or what little there is of it these days. There were only three guys available tonight --- Adams, Fernando Rijo, and Paul Stewart, and the latter's a stretch. Stew pitched three innings on Friday, but told Frank Kremblas he was ready if he needed him....... The Stars simply could not back Housman's outstanding slider and good live sinking fastball tonight. He went to only three three-ball counts the entire game, and struck out a season-high nine....... In his last two starts, covering 13 innings, he's allowed just one earned run, striking out 18 along the way and walking just one. Jacksonville lefty Randy Leek threw just six pitches in the 1st inning, five of them for strikes and retired the first seven hitters before Enrique Cruz singled to left in the 3rd. In the end, he required only 67 pitches, 52 for strikes to get through eight innings, but did not figure in the decision....... Rickie Weeks toured the bases on an 0-1 change-up in the 4th inning, lining it under the scoreboard in left-center field to put the Stars out in front, 1-0, but the Stars came up empty after that, and could not get a runner in scoring position until the 7th when Fielder and Brandon Gemoll both singled and were stranded. House gave up just four hits through seven, but he had to get himself out of jams in the 5th and 7th innings....... He had retired 13 in a row when Tony Gwynn, Jr. overran what should have been a Nelson Castro double in the 5th. An error should have been charged to Gwynn, who tried to desperately chase the ball with one bare hand high over his shoulder, but Castro was given a 2-out triple. That was followed by a walk to Tony Socarras, but Housman escaped the inning without any damage........ In his last frame, when he was close to 85 pitches, the Suns led off with a bloop single by Willie Aybar that parachuted to right and a double down the right field line by Brennan King, but with runners on second and third and nobody out, behind on Derek Michaelis, he got him to hit the ball right back to him, then struck out Nelson Castro and Tony Socarras on sliders --- a great comeback effort for Housman. Jacksonville was fairly quick to jump on Brian Adams in the 8th........ With one out, slumping Wilkin Ruan, who snapped an 0-for-24 spin with a 1st inning hit, singled to center and advanced on a balk. After striking out Jason Repko, Nick Alvarez singled to right to tie the game....... In the next frame, one out away from going into extra innings, Nelson Castro singled to right-center, putting Willie Aybar, who led off with a walk, into scoring position. Tony Socarras then singled to left, scoring Aybar with the winning run ahead of Gemoll's throw........ Sunday, Chris Saenz (3-1, 3.26) will go against Derek Thompson (1-1, 2.59), coming back after Tommy John surgery at 2:05 CDT. Then the Stars will go to Mobile in time for the great "who wants 1st place anyhow" division race...... Right now, Birmingham leads Mobile, Huntsville, and West Tennessee by just a half a game............ The Stars have now alternated wins and loss in 14 straight games -- the king of all ruts and a club record........ It looks like a scheduled win coming up. John Novinsky threw a side in the bullpen Saturday, will take a day off, then throw again, and so on, and it's likely he'll be ready for Mobile Wednesday. Novinsky has had some elbow discomfort....... Reggie Rivard, the former hockey player, is playing it tough. Said he could go today, but pitching coach Fred Dabney is holding him up. He had to have his knee drained after a five-inning start...... Matt Ford, who's missed a start and hasn't pitched since April 26, reportedly sat out with arm fatigue......... Nothing was significantly found wrong with Ryan Miller's elbow. There are no bone chips. He's about 10 days away from being able to pitch in a game....... Three days after being activated by the Stars, catcher Alex Delgado was transferred to Indianapolis......... Chris Barnwell, after hitting just .183 in April, is 3-for-26 in May........ The Stars have had only one 10-hit game in their last 13. -

Kind of an offshoot Huntsville article as far as specific interest to the Link Report goes, yet still a good read on Jorge Brito. Who? You'll see... www.al.com/sports/huntsvi...094360.xml And, in a separate item, an update on the new video board from Mark McCarter of the Times It's not as if Joe W. Davis Stadium is about to turn into some full-fledged construction zone, where all fans will need to wear hardhats. And it's not always the best of news when the noise of a drill can drown out a baseball crowd. But the sound of work crews is a welcome one for Stars officials. The new scoreboard, which will include a top-quality video screen, will be in place by the end of this month, according to Stars general manager Bryan Dingo. The target date is May 28. Additionally, the bid for replacing many of the upper-level grandstand seats is expected to be awarded Thursday. "Ideally, it'd have been great to have all the work done when the season opened,'' Dingo said. "But on the other hand, it's good that fans can see the work going on and see how we're trying to improve the stadium.'' The scoreboard, with a price tag in excess of $300,000, has been purchased by the Stars' ownership group, headed by Miles Prentice. During last week's afternoon games, crews were already drilling holes and doing other work in preparation for the scoreboard. Workers are scheduled to construct a control booth for the scoreboard this Tuesday. On May 24, they are scheduled to take down the existing scoreboard. For two or three games, there will be an old-style manual scoreboard in place in left field. Meanwhile, the city of Huntsville has committed $330,000 for renovation and improvement, including the new seats. Already much work has been done to the infrastructure and "behind the scenes,'' including improvements in the Stars clubhouse. -

Final: Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 9, High Desert 6 The Mavs kept playing catch-up and wound up running out of time in their loss to the Jethawks. Parra's line wasn't good, and relievers Dave Nolasco and Craig Breslow were victimized by 5 Maverick errors, including two by catcher John Vanden Berg. On the bright side, DH Travis Hinton continued to stay hot with a 1-2 night that featured three walks and no K's. Kenard Bibbs added two triples and a walk, though he only scored once. Huntsville Site Game Summary: This time, the Suns? late rally was too much, and Jeff Housman?s second straight magnificent start was wasted. Huntsville (15-14) blew an eighth-inning lead on Saturday night at the Baseball Grounds, and Jacksonville (19-10) walked off a winner on Tony Socarras? two-out single in the bottom of the ninth, 2-1. With the loss, the Stars fell out of first place in the Southern League West. Housman spun seven masterful innings, the longest stint for a Star this season, fanning nine for the second time in five days. Housman shut out the Suns, allowing just four hits and one walk. He has 18 strikeouts in his last 13 innings, permitting only one run while getting consecutive no-decisions. Housman pitched out of his lone jam in the seventh, retiring three hitters in a row, on a broken-bat roller and two strikeouts, with runners at second and third and none out. Rickie Weeks? first Southern League homerun held up until the eighth. Weeks took Randy Leek?s 0-1 pitch over the left-centerfield wall, a line drive solo shot for a 1-0 Huntsville lead. Leek nearly matched Housman?s effort, allowing one run while scattering seven hits over eight innings, walking none and fanning one. Remarkably, Leek required only 67 pitches, 52 for strikes, to navigate eight innings. Like Housman, Leek did not figure in the decision. In the bottom of the eighth, Jacksonville?s Wilkin Ruan singled with one out and took second on a balk. One out later, Nick Alvarez singled to right, scoring Ruan with the tying run. In the ninth, Willy Aybar led off with a walk and took second on Nelson Castro?s two-out single. Socarras followed with a ground-single to left, plating Aybar ahead of leftfielder Brandon Gemoll?s throw with the winning run. Yhency Brazoban (3-0) picked up the win after giving up one hit in the ninth, and Brian Adams (0-1) suffered the loss, surrendering two runs on four hits and one walk while fanning two over two innings. Stars righty Chris Saenz (3-1, 3.26) meets Suns lefty Derek Thompson (1-1, 2.59) in the series finale at 2:05 p.m. CT on Sunday at the Baseball Grounds. -

Indianapolis "Quotes and Notes" QUOTES: Jack Cust, Ottawa (regarding two-run homer in fourth off Pedro Liriano): "He (Liriano) was keeping me off balance," said Cust. "It wasn't a bad pitch that he threw, but I just really hit it well." Cust on the cold weather (48 degrees game time): "It actually was little warmer than our last series here," said Cust. "Once the sun went down it got cold. You just have to mentally block out it out each night. When we get to summer here, it's great. Our fans are loyal to come out here in these conditions. Some of them wear shorts." Cecil Cooper, Indianapolis manager on the loss: "We had a lackluster performance tonight," said Cooper. "We had no offense to speak of-we're not swinging the bats well. Our guys have got to make some physical and mental adjustments to the game. We need to be more selectitve at the plate. We have to have all of our guys go out and execute. We are not being very patient." NOTES: a.. Ottawa's six-run fourth inning was the most runs scored in a single frame this season against Indianapolis. The last three runs scored as a result of a Steve Scarborough error. b.. Ottawa leads the series 1-0. Since joining the IL, Ottawa now has a 24-23 advantage over the Indians. c.. The Tribe has dropped four of its last five games. d.. Corey Hart and Alex Delgado were not available as they encountered passport difficulties. Hart has only missed two games all season. e.. J.J. Hardy's 10th double of the year resulted in the Tribe's only run of the game as Jeff Liefer scored in the seventh inning. f.. Indianapolis threatened in the ninth with one out, loading the bases, but failed to score. g.. Former Indian Chad Mottola capped off the six-run fourth with a two-run single. h.. The two teams play Sunday, the second game of a four-game series. -

Futurefan, nothing here as well. Has anybody contacted Indy management over this yet? By the way, Rickie Weeks with his first AA home run, 1-0 Stars in the 4th at Jacksonville. That should make one poster happy at least.... -

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update: Includes latest injury updates... THAT ELUSIVE STRIKEFrom blowing a 2-1 lead, one strike away from victory, the Stars came back in the 12th to win, 4-2........ For the 13th consecutive time, he Stars avoided a streak of any kind, following a loss on April 23rd with a win, and continuing that pattern to the present point....... That is a club record, previously set in 1995 at 11 games. Here we go again, I thought...... The game started with Rickie Weeks, crowding the plate as always, being hit on the sleeve by a pitch, but the game progressed for 12 innings without incident. There would be enough excitement without one. Jason Belcher had quite a day --- his best since becoming a Huntsville Star...... ......In the bottom of the 5th, Belcher made it a 3-for-3 day with a double into the alley in left-center, but finished a triple short of the cycle....... No Huntsville Stars hitter has ever hit for the cycle........ He put Huntsville in front, 1-0, with a monstrous 2nd inning homer, a solo drive that cleared the grandstand beyond the rightfield wall. The Stars took a 2-1 lead in the 4th inning. Jacksonville-born and bred Chris Barnwell was at-bat with Brad Nelson on 2nd and Belcher on 1st......... The runners were in motion when Barny hit a pitch up and out of the strike zone, nevertheless getting a single to center. That scored Nelson easily, but Belcher was nearly hung out to dry. Belcher had rounded 2nd base much too far, but the Stars caught a break when centerfielder Jason Repko failed to throw in behind the runner, throwing instead to third........ The runners moved up to 2nd and 3rd when Joel Alvarado grounded out. Enrique Cruz took a full count, then walked, but Dennis Sarfate popped out to end the inning, pounding the bat on the ground to express his frustration........... Alvarado in the bottom of the 7th inning, score still 2-1, made a great diving catch of a popped up bunt attempt in foul ground by Nelson Castro. Plate ump Jimmy Roebuck said it touched the ground before he got his glove under it, bringing out a very irate Frank Kremblas. Roebuck brought in the rest of his crew, Brandon Bushee and Jeff Latter and the call was reversed --- a rare break, which of course got some feedback from Jacksonville manager Dino Ebel. I thought we were going to have another bench-clearing display, but Ebel just wanted to know what was going on.......... Wish I could have been there to see it. It really got announcer Robert Portnoy excited. Paul Stewart pitched out of big jams in nearly every inning he worked...... In the 5th, Nick Alvarez hit a one-out double into the gap that got past Belcher and Tony Gwynn, Jr.......... Jason Repko held up at third........ Willy Aybar, with a chance to tie the game, popped out to Barnwell, then Stewart struck out Brennan King on a slider to end the inning...... In the following inning, Stewart got two big strikeouts to strand a pair in scoring position......... In the 8th, the Suns had the tying run 90 feet away, but Fernando Rijo threw a 1-2 fastball past Jesse Hoorelbeke to end that inning. The Suns had now left nine runners on base. That's almost as far as the Stars' incredible luck would stretch. Now it was up to Giron, the last available pitcher from the bullpen, to get the save for Stewart........ John Novinsky, who hasn't pitched since April 30, and Reggie Rivard were unavailable. Novinsky is having some backside elbow problems and Rivard's knee has been a problem since throwing five sterling shutout innings in an emergency start, May 1. After the game, his knee swelled to the point where he had to have it drained and it hasn't been the same since, although he threw from the bullpen, Friday....... There were no options after Giron, unless you bring Johnny Raburn in and hope for a quick end to this ballgame........ The Suns got a runner in scoring position in the 9th with one out, thanks to a sacrifice by Wilkin Ruan......... After fouling off a couple of pitches, Giron got Jason Repko swinging for the second out......... Giron was one strike away from erasing the next batter, Nelson Castro. Castro hit a 1-2 grounder to Enrique Cruz who backhanded the ball on a knee, but threw low to Prince Fielder, who couldn't make the short hop play. The Stars tried to get Tony Socarras at the plate, but the throw was late and the Suns had tied this ballgame......... It was the first time this season the Stars had let a game get away this late. In the 10th, Giron struck out Brennan King on a slider and Derek Michaelis, a left-handed hitter with power, on a 1-2 high fastball. After pinch-hitter Bret Dowdy's infield single, Giron fought back from 2-and-0 to strike out the agitator Tony Socarras on a fast ball........ But that was it for Giron and the Stars bullpen. Now it was up to Raburn, who pitched a scoreless inning at Chattanooga on April 30........ Raburn was actually seriously considered as a closer when he was at the University of South Florida, but complained that it was too hard on his arm, so he gave pitching up to become an infielder. Pitching coach Fred Dabney caught Raburn on the side throwing one day and said Raburn actually had some movement....... You couldn't ask for much more from him. He struck out Repko on a breaking ball to get the 2nd out in the 11th inning, then retired Nelson Castro on a liner to third. He was ahead on every hitter he faced. The Stars got the runs they needed for Raburn In the 12th...... Joel Alvarado walked, Raburn singled to center, and Weeks was hit on the elbow, the 10th time he's been hit this season, all within a span of 12 games....... With a chance to drive in a run or two with one out, reliever Elvin Nina, back for his 2nd season with Jacksonville, struck out Tony Gwynn swinging, giving him the 0-for-6 collar, the first 0-for-6 since Brandon Gemoll last year on July 2. That dropped his average to .211 from .223....... Now it was up to Fielder, a disciplined hitter, who was 0-for-5 --- and due........ He fouled a couple of pitches off then on 1-and-2, singled to left driving in Alvarado and Raburn, and giving the Stars the final 4-2 lead. It would be won or lost in the bottom of the 12th inning........ Raburn was back for one more try, but trouble found him right away. Nick Alvarez, behind on the count, singled through short and third and Willie Aybar hit the first pitch to him to right field for another single.........Brennan King tried to move them over on a bunt, but did not get it far enough away from Raburn and Alvarez was retired at third....... The runners tried to advance on the first pitch to Willie Aybar, which was in the dirt, but the lead runner was hung up between second and third, and Enrique Cruz tagged Nick Alvarez for the second out........ On a 2-0 pitch, Derek Michaelis grounded a ball up the middle. Cruz made a diving stop and may have been able to get a force at second, but the ball popped out of the webbing, and King advanced to second........ Edwin Bellorin, batting .322, comes in to pinch-hit for Nina with the tying run on second base, but hit an 0-1 pitch to Gwynn for the final out......... With a desperately depleted bullpen, Johnny Raburn became the first position player since 2nd baseman Eric Martins in 1996 to pick up a win for the Huntsville Stars. This one will be remembered at the end of the season as a candidate for my Top 10 games-of-the-year. The Stars injury list is longer than I've seen in years, but some of the news is encouraging.......... Mike Jones and Ryan Miller continue on the road to recovery....... Jonesy, if all things go well, will throw off the mound for the first time in Mobile. He threw 60 feet pain-free in the outfield, Friday.......... Matt Ford is starting to feel much better and he says he has a shot to pitch in Mobile....... Brad Nelson is hot. 8-for-18 in his last five games (.444), raising his average from .247 to .286........ Dennis Sarfate threw 73 pitches, 43 for strikes........Prince Fielder was named the Southern League Hitter of the Week for April 30-May 6, hitting .360, hitting four HRs, driving in nine runs and scoring five times. The Huntsville Stars have set the dates for three annual events season ticket holders can take advantage of this season....... On May 22, all season ticket holders, Stargazer members, advertisers, and sponsors are invited to the stadium to take part in batting practice. Actually get down on the field and take your best shot. That starts at 10 am....... May 17th will be the annual season ticket holder picnic from 6-7 pm. And August 2nd will be the annual Stargazer pizza party from 6-7 pm. -
