  1. Final: High Desert 6, Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 4 High Desert Game Summary: From the Jethawks' site, so from an opponent's perspective for now... Jarred Ball hit a pair of home runs for the JetHawks, but a five run fifth inning would lead the High Desert Mavericks to a 6-4 win over the JetHawks on Friday night at The Hangar in front of 2,323 fans. With the game scoreless in the bottom of the fourth inning, Ball hit the first of his two solo home runs to give the JetHawks a 1-0 lead. However, in the top of the fifth, the Mavericks would score five runs on seven hits to take a 5-2 lead. Froilan Villanueva hit his third home run of the year, and Kennard Bibbs added a two-run triple in the inning for High Desert. Ball would again hit a solo home run to lead off in the sixth for the JetHawks, becoming the fourth JetHawks player to hit two home runs in a game this season. Ball now has four home runs on the year. Lancaster added a single run in the seventh inning, but could not get any closer in the loss. Adam Bass (2-2) was charged with the loss for the JetHawks, allowing five runs on eight hits over five innings. Neb Brown had his season high nine game hitting streak snapped in the game. Conor Jackson and Carlos Quentin both had four game hitting streaks snapped for the JetHawks. Quentin also had a streak of reaching base safely in 19 straight games snapped. High Desert Box Score: SS Ozzie Chavez continues his amazing run at the plate as of late, citing a new "aggressiveness"; nice to see young closer Nick Slack settling in nicely in his last few outings... BOB MACK/The Florida Times-Union, Photo The Suns' Nick Alvarez slams into Huntsville Stars catcher Joel Alvarado at home plate as he attempts to score from first base on a hit by Willy Aybar in the bottom of the third inning Friday night at the Baseball Grounds. 4. Final: Huntsville 4, Jacksonville (Dodgers) 2, 12 innings Raburn shines, but only thanks to another Enrique Cruz miscue -- ugh, that whole "carry Cruz through all of 2003" thing is looking more disastrous all the time... Huntsville Site Game Summary: The Stars blew a 2-1 lead in the ninth, sent a position player to the mound in the 11th, and still somehow found a way to win. Prince Fielder, named the Southern League Hitter of the Week earlier in the day, lined a clutch two-run single, then outfielder Johnny Raburn pitched a scoreless 12th in Huntsville?s improbable 4-2 win over Jacksonville (18-10) on Friday night at the Baseball Grounds. The Stars (15-13) reclaimed a share of first place in the Southern League West. Jason Belcher put Huntsville in front, 1-0, with a monstrous second-inning homer, a solo drive that cleared the grandstand beyond the rightfield wall. With the score tied 1-1 in the fourth, Chris Barnwell, a native of the Jacksonville area, singled home Brad Nelson to put the Stars up, 2-1. With Stars closer Roberto Giron pitching the ninth ? he was 5-for-5 in save chances entering the game ? Suns catcher Tony Socarras led off with a single. Wilkin Ruan sacrificed Socarras to second, and Giron fanned Jason Repko for the second out. On a 1-2 pitch, Nelson Castro hit a ground ball to short, but Enrique Cruz?s errant throw short-hopped Fielder at first and bounced far enough away for Socarras to score the tying run. Stars relievers John Novinsky (elbow) and Reggie Rivard (knee) remained unavailable due to injury, and all other Huntsville relievers had been used in the game or one day prior. Enter Raburn, the same Stars utility player who tossed a scoreless inning in Chattanooga on April 30. He pitched a perfect 11th, and Fielder?s two-out, two-strike, bases-loaded single delivered two runs in the top of the 12th for a 4-2 Stars lead. Nick Alvarez and Willy Aybar led off the Suns? 12th with singles, but Raburn pounced on Brennan King?s bunt and nailed Alvarez at third. With Derek Michaelis at the plate, Raburn?s first pitch hit the dirt, and Aybar bounced too far off second. Catcher Joel Alvarado ran at Aybar before feeding Cruz for the tag. After Michaelis? infield single, pinch-hitter Edwin Bellorin flied to center to end the game. Raburn (1-0) notched the unlikely win, tossing two scoreless innings, allowing three hits and no runs while fanning one. Elvin Nina (3-3) suffered the loss, permitting two runs on three hits and one walk with four strikeouts in two innings. Huntsville lefty Jeff Housman (0-2, 4.24) meets Suns left-hander Randy Leek (1-0, 2.38) in game three of the series Saturday night at the Baseball Grounds. Huntsville Box Score: Lots to digest here -- Rickie Weeks batting leadoff, nice change-of-pace there with Mr. OBP; with Brandon Gemoll, Brad Nelson, and Jason Belcher not capable of playing CF, Tony Gwynn's not getting the breaks in the schedule he needs; Gemoll and Belcher are both getting penalized for being on the same team that needs a DH so rarely; why such a short outing for Dennis Sarfate -- low BB and K count, they must be fouling off a ton of pitches; Paul Stewart with more yeoman "save the staff" work; 27 combined K's in this one... 5. Final: Charlotte (White Sox) 4, Indianapolis 1 Indianapolis Star Game Blurb: Again just off the news wire only; heck, the Star could send a college intern to get quotes and actual coverage (maybe a photo) for free; so much for the homestand -- we're just learning almost nothing about this team in terms of media coverage this season... INDIANAPOLIS - Five of Charlotte's eight hits went for extra bases Friday night, including eighth-inning triples by Mario Valenzuela and Bryant Nelson, in a 4-1 International League victory over Indianapolis. The Indians took a 1-0 lead into the eighth before the Knights scored all of their runs in that inning. Valenzuela opened with a triple to right and scored on a single by Scott Bikowski. Andres Torres drove in Bikoswki with a double, then scored on the triple by Nelson. With two out, Rich Paz reached base on an error, allowing Nelson to score the final run, unearned. Jose Santiago went the final two innings for starting pitcher Josh Stewart (1-2) and did not allow a base runner. Reliever Chris Michalak (2-3) took the loss for Indianapolis. Indianapolis starter Ben Hendrickson did not factor into the decision despite allowing just four hits and a run in seven innings plus. The only run for the Indians came in the fourth inning on a double by Ryan Knox, an error and a sacrifice fly by Matt Erickson. The Indians managed only four hits off Stewart. On Thursday night, Indianapolis had 20 hits in a 19-3 victory over Charlotte. Indianapolis (16-10) remains in first place in the West Division, 41/2 games ahead of Toledo. Only North Division leader Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (17-10) has a better record. The Indians depart on a nine-day northeastern trip with four games each at Ottawa and Rochester. 9. Daily Press High Desert Game Story: www.vvdailypress.com/cgi-...5186,1820, NOTES: After three days of silence, the Mavs were finally back on the air. High Desert's flagship station KRAK (910 am) had been down the last three nights because their transformer was down but the Mavericks were back on the air for the final game of the seven-game homestand. ... Designated hitter/center fielder Chris Morris is day-to-day with a jammed finger. Kudos to Mavs announcer Roxy Bernstein and High Desert management for going ahead with the webcast of each game this week, despite no local radio. Beyond friends and family and a few Brewerfan faithful, I can't imagine the audience online-only was overwhelming. Having listened in to a good portion of gametime this week, the broadcasts were as professional as you'd expect otherwise. Manager Mel Queen: "It was a fastball," Queen said. "It's not that bad of a pitch when they pop it up, only when they hit out. Thanks as always, Mel. Keep them comin'! We love Mel!

  11. Beloit Game Summary, Timber Rattlers' Site: The Wisconsin Timber Rattler defense was charged with five errors in a 5-2 loss to the Beloit Snappers Thursday night. Of Beloit's five runs, only two were earned. Beloit right fielder Vinny Rottino broke a 1-1 tie with a solo homer in the fourth. Brian Montalbo was the winning pitcher for the Snappers. He gave up just two hits and one run in seven innings. The teams traded runs in the first inning for the second night in a row. Guilder Rodriguez reached on an error, went to second on a single by Terry Trofholz, third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on an RBI ground out by Lou Palmisano to put the Snappers in front 1-0. Rattler lead-off batter Josh Ellison tripled to start the Rattler first and scored on an RBI ground out by Adam Jones. Rottino broke the tie with a two out, solo home run to left-center in top of the fourth. The Snappers (13-14) added an insurance run in the seventh. Trofholz had an infield single to chase Manuel Ramirez home for a 3-1 lead. Two more runs scored in the top of the eighth. Adam Heether doubled in the first run and scored later in the inning on Wisconsin's fourth error of the night. The Rattlers (11-16) got a run in the eighth on an RBI single by Jones. Wisconsin loaded the bases with two out, but Simon Beresford struck out Evel Bastida-Martinez to end the attmpted rally. Beresford pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the game. Rattler starting pitcher Eric O'Flaherty gave up three runs --two earned -- to take the loss. 12. David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update: IT WAS BOUND TO COME TO THISAs a Dodger affiliate, the Jacksonville Suns, I've observed, have gotten off to hot starts each of the past four years........ It's easy to tell why the Suns are in first place in the East. Their .265 average is 3rd best in the league and the ERA tops the league at 2.93. They play aggressively, but tonight, it got a little carried away. What started out as a pitchers duel between lefty Ryan Ketchner and righty Tim Bausher ended up as another kind of duel....... Both benches cleared twice in the 8th inning, with players and coaches exchanging words......... What precipitated this was a combination of what happened in the course of this game and the frustration on the Stars part, I think, of being hit by pitches eight times in a six-game series against the Diamond Jaxx recently........ Rickie Weeks, who is not afraid to crowd the plate and wears battle armor on the left elbow, was hit underneath the collar in the 8th inning for the 8th time this season...... All eight of Weeks HBPs have come within the span of 11 games..... . In the bottom of the inning, Brian Adams retaliated by throwing a pitch that glanced off the helmet of Tony Socarras, whose double was the spark that lit the Suns' five-run 7th. Socarras took a few steps toward the mound and Kade Johnson stepped up to restrain him......... That emptied the benches and the bullpens. Cooler heads prevailed, though, and Willie Ruan stepped in with Socarras on first and one out. Ruan hit a chopper to Weeks. Weeks fed Enrique Cruz and as Cruz threw to first after making the force, Socarras wiped him out with an agressive, you might say hostile slide......... Umpire Garrett Watson ruled that Socarras deliberately slid too far from the bag and called Ruan out at first......... As Socarras walked back to the Suns' dugout, some members of the Stars infield followed him, and both benches and bullpens cleared again........ Although no fists flew, several players and coaches had to be restrained and Socarras was ejected from the game to cool him off........ It looks like the stage is set for a very lively series. Tim Bausher's effort tonight was brilliant until he gave up back to back home runs in the 6th to Jesse Hoorelbeke and Willy Aybar...... Up to that point, Kade Johnson had broken up a scoreless pitchers duel with a double scoring Weeks, the 14,000th run in Stars history. The Suns broke this game open in the 7th inning, starting with a 2-run single on a drawn-in infield by returning Jacksonville Sun, Jason Repko......... Brian Adams had used all of two pitches to get Tim Bausher out of the 6th, but he found himself in a lot of trouble the next inning by walking Sergio Garcia and giving up a double to Tony Socarras. Adams was able to breathe a little after retiring Wilkin Ruan, but he had a choice to make on Repko......... He could have been intentionally passed with one out and runners on 2nd and 3rd. Should have in my book. He's tied for 4th among Southern League batting leaders. But Adams, instead, pitches to Repko, who rockets an 0-1 pitch up the middle to score both runners, making it 4-1, extending his hitting streak to a current league best of 12 games........ If the Stars were at double-play depth, instead of playing in, Rickie Weeks might have gotten to that ball, but of course, Adams would have been pitching to Hoorelbeke, a .189 hitter who leads Suns hitters in strikeouts........ Repko was picked off with Hoorelbeke at bat, which lit up Jacksonville manager Dino Ebel, who thought Prince Fielder's sweep tag missed......... A little warm-up before the volcano exploded in the 8th....... Brennan King made it 6-1 with a 3-2 drive to the alley in left-center past Brandon Gemoll, a two-run triple, the 6th of his six-year career........ That broke it....... Derek Michaelis singled in King to end the Suns' scoring. The Stars will face three more lefties in this series --- Glenn Bott (1-2, 2.86) pitches tomorrow against Dennis Sarfate (1-1, 6.60). Bott will be followed by Luis Gonzalez and Randy Leek. The general consensus among the players is that Jacksonville is their favorite place to play. It's Florida. What can you say?........ Particularly for Chris Barnwell, who grew up in Jacksonville and went to Flagler College in nearby St. Augustine. In fact, Barnwell, Brandon Gemoll, and Brad Nelson were invited by a friend of Barnwell's father to take a little fishing excursion 25 miles out of St. Augustine, where Nelson caught his first fish. Gemoll took home the prize --- a 25-30 lb. King Mackerel.
  13. Indianapolis Game Summary: Inside-the-park -- run, Corey, run! Indianapolis (16-9) pounded out 20 hits Thursday night, including four home runs to route the Charlotte Knights, 19-3. The run total sets a Victory Field record, but falls short to the all-time team total of 22, set on July 17, 1932 against Minnesota. Jon Nunnally?s two-run homer in the third off Charlotte starter Dan Wright (0-1) ignited the Indians offense, which had produced two runs in the first two games of the series with the Knights. "Early in the game, they were coming at me with fastballs," said Nunnally. "I put a charge into it. I knew that I had to get behind the runner on base." Meantime, Indians starting pitcher Mike Adams (2-0) making his first start of the season, shut down the Knights. Adams, the IL Pitcher-of-the-Week (April 25 to May 1), threw five innings, allowing five hits, walking one and striking out five. In his last 11.2 innings pitched, Adams has not allowed a run, giving up four hits, walking two and striking out 18. "Adams is pitching awesome," said Nunnally. "All of our pitchers did what they had to do tonight. Our pitchers have been keeping us in games lately, but tonight our offense came alive. I love to play this game and play hard every night. It?s all about learning and making adjustments." The Tribe added four runs in the third inning highlighted by Corey Hart?s (leadoff) inside the park home run. For the evening, Indianapolis belted four home runs. J.J. Hardy sent a three-run shot out of the ballpark in the fifth and Matt Erickson hit a solo homer in the eighth. Indianapolis will send righthander Ben Hendrickson (3-1, 2.81) against southpaw Josh Stewart (0-2, 4.00) in the final game of the four-game set with Charlotte.
  14. From Indy: Indians catcher Chris Coste has been added to the seven-day disabled list due to a strain of his left oblique muscle.
  15. Huntsville Site Game Summary: Fireworks are planned after Friday?s game, but the Stars? four-game series in Jacksonville opened with a loud bang Thursday night. The benches cleared twice in the eighth, with players and coaches exchanging heated words. Two batters were plunked ? one for each team ? and Jacksonville?s Tony Socarras was ejected for an aggressive takeout slide at second. The Suns (18-9) rallied from 1-0 down for a lopsided 7-2 win over Huntsville (14-13) at the Baseball Grounds, and the eighth-inning confrontation makes this eagerly anticipated match-up of division leaders even more compelling. With his team in front 7-2 in the eighth, Jacksonville reliever Nate Ruhl hit Rickie Weeks in the back just below the collar. Then in the bottom of the inning, Stars lefty Brian Adams threw a pitch that glanced off the helmet of Socarras. Socarras took a few steps toward the mound and Stars catcher Kade Johnson restrained him, emptying both benches and bullpens. Cooler heads prevailed, and Wilkin Ruan batted with a runner at first and one out. Ruan followed with a chopper to second, where Weeks fielded and fed Stars shortstop Enrique Cruz. As Cruz threw to first, Socarras wiped him out with an aggressive slide. Base umpire Garrett Watson ruled Socarras slid too far from the bag and called Ruan out at first. As Socarras walked back toward the Suns? dugout, members of the Stars? infield followed him, and both benches and bullpens again cleared. Several players and coaches had to be restrained, and Socarras was ejected from the game. Though no fisticuffs occurred, the stage is set for a hotly contested and entertaining series. Kade Johnson?s sixth-inning double scored Weeks for a 1-0 Huntsville lead, but Jacksonville quickly responded. In the bottom of the sixth, Suns Jessie Hoorelbeke and Willy Aybar led off with back-to-back solo homers. In the seventh, Jason Repko?s one-out single plated two runs, then after Repko was picked off first, Cruz?s throwing error allowed Hoorelbeke to reach. Aybar drew a walk, Brennan King doubled in two runs and Derek Michaelis singled home King for a 7-1 Suns lead. Star Brad Nelson closed the scoring with run-scoring single in the eighth. Ryan Ketchner (3-0) picked up the win, allowing one run on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts in six innings. Tim Bausher (1-3) suffered the loss, permitting only two runs ? the Hoorelbeke and Aybar homers ? on seven hits and one walk while fanning a season-high seven over 5 2/3 innings, his longest outing this year. Stars righty Dennis Sarfate (1-1, 6.60) meets Suns lefty Glenn Bott (1-2, 2.86) in game two Friday night at the Baseball Grounds. Game time is 6:35 p.m. CT.
  16. Catcher Alex Delgado is back in active duty, only not with Huntsville, but Indianapolis. Must be more to these moves, we'll keep an eye on things Friday AM for you...
  17. We'll here more on this in the morning -- do you really want to make Prince mad? Benches cleared twice in the eighth inning: After Jacksonville's Tony Socarras was hit in the helmet by Brian Adams? breaking ball and then again after Socarras slid hard to break up a double play. Socarras was ejected from the game and a scathing Prince Fielder was restrained by teammates.

  23. Daily Press High Desert Game Story: Martin's tough luck ends Mavericks put up 13 hits in rout of Lake Elsinore By KRIS REILLY/Staff Writer ADELANTO ? The hex has been lifted. High Desert pitcher Forrest Martin won for the first time this season as the Mavericks beat Lake Elsinore 9-3 on Wednesday night at Mavericks Stadium. The victory ends a frustrating drought for Martin (1-2). He had appeared in five games and only twice allowed more than two earned runs, but he had nothing to show for it but two losses. "I was beginning to feel cursed or something," Martin said. "It was nice to get in that victory column. ... We were really able to keep them off the board tonight." Martin was superb in his sixth appearance and fifth start of the season on Wednesday, allowing two earned runs on three hits with six strikeouts. He also had plenty of run support. Ten Mavericks had plate appearances, and nine of them got hits. Designated hitter Chris Morris went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and two stolen bases; shortstop Ozzie Chavez went 2-for-4 with a home run; and outfielder Dan Boyd was 3-for-5 at the plate with five RBIs, giving him a total of nine RBIs in the past two games. "The last couple of games, I've been trying to be a little more patient at the plate," Boyd said. "I've been trying to get a pitch in my zone that I know I'm pretty good at handling, which is out on the middle of the plate and the outer half. I've been fortunate enough to get a few of those, and when I've been getting them, I've been putting good swings on them." While Martin was cooling down the Storm's bats, the Mavs were roughing up Lake Elsinore starter Gabe Ribas (2-3), who lasted only 3 1-3 innings. High Desert had a commanding 6-0 lead after two frames. "It helps to get off to an early lead," Mavericks manager Mel Queen said. "It takes the pressure off the pitcher. It lets him relax and lets him pitch the way he's capable of pitching without being uptight." Eight Mavericks came to the plate in a four-run, four-hit first inning. Morris singled, Callix Crabbe was walked and Boyd drove in both runners with a double to right center. A one-out sacrifice fly by Jeff Eure scored Boyd, and the Mavs made it 4-0 when Froilan Villanueva doubled and was driven in by a Kennard Bibbs base hit. Martin struck out the side in succession in the top of the second, then High Desert's hot hitting continued. Chavez led off with a single, and Morris used his speed to get on base with a bunt. Lake Elsinore third baseman Kervin Jacobo wrangled the bunt, but Morris turned on the jets and beat the throw to first. Ribas walked Crabbe to load the bases, and Boyd exploited it with a sharp two-RBI single that whizzed just beyond the reach of Lake Elsinore shortstop Luis Cruz, giving the Mavs a 6-0 lead. The Storm didn't get a hit off Martin until Kennard Jones hit a two-out single in the third. Martin got Cruz to pop up and end the threat. Lake Elsinore (13-13) got on the board in the following inning when outfielder Steve Baker hit a one-out, two-RBI double to right center, but Martin struck out the next two batters. Chavez led off the fourth inning by crushing a solo home run to right. The ball faded into the night sky after passing the outfield fence and the additional fence beyond it. The Cal League's leading base stealer, Morris, got on base with a walk, then stole his 20th and 21st bases of the season. Boyd drove in Morris with a single for his fifth RBI of the game, giving the Mavs an 8-2 advantage. Scott Candelaria went 1-for-4 to continue a nine-game hitting streak. Mavs reliever David Nolasco allowed a run in three innings of work, and closer Nick Slack pitched a scoreless ninth. High Desert (12-15) remains in last place in the Cal League South Division, with Rancho Cucamonga a half game ahead.
