  1. Final: High Desert 9, Lake Elsinore (Padres) 3 High Desert Site Game Summary: THROW FORREST THROW MAVS TAKE FOUR OUT OF LAST FIVEForrest Martin tossed in his finest performance of 2004, backed up by a high-powered High Desert Mavericks offense in a 9-3 win over the Lake Elsinore Storm before 1,047 at Mavericks Stadium on Wednesday night. Martin (1-2) picked up his first win of the 2004 campaign, stringing together five innings of quality work on the mound, allowing only two runs on three hits with six strikeouts. Martin at one point retired four of five batters he faced on strikeouts, all strikeouts looking, as the Lake Elsinore offense had trouble timing Forrest?s nasty curveball. The Mavs (11-15) have now won four of five games, and jumped out to an early lead for the second straight night. High Desert touched up Lake Elsinore starter Gabe Ribas (1-2) for four runs in the first, on a two-run double by Dan Boyd, a sacrifice fly by Jeff Eure, and a Kennard Bibbs RBI single. High Desert got two more in the second to put the game out of reach, when Boyd struck again for a two-run single, hiking the lead to 6-0. The Storm (13-12) got on the board by scoring two in the fourth, when Steve Baker laced a two-run double to right off Martin. The six batters that reached the plate in the inning would only be the longest inning surrendered by Mavericks pitching all night long. High Desert answered with two more runs in the bottom of the inning, when Ozzie Chavez smoked his first homer of the year down the right-field line, while Boyd followed with his fifth RBI on the night, a one-out RBI single to center which booted Ribas from the game. Travis Hinton finished the Mavs scoring with an RBI double in the sixth, while Lake Elsinore added their final run in the seventh on a solo home run by Ronnie Merrill. Boyd led the Mavericks attack with a sparkling 3-for-5 night at the plate with five RBI?s. The Mavs, who are guaranteed at least a series split in the four-game set with Lake Elsinore , take the field for the final game of the series Thursday night at Mavericks Stadium. Bo Hall (2-2) will get the start for High Desert , facing Lake Elsinore counterpart David Pauley (1-3) at 7:05 PM (9:05 Central). 4. Indianapolis Game Summary: The Charlotte Knights again used effective pitching and timely hitting to shut down the Indianapolis Indians Wednesday, 4-1, in front of 4,624 at Victory Field. Knights starter Felix Diaz, who pitched 7.1 innings, gave up eight hits and one run, walked one and struck out two to earn his fifth win of the season. Indians starter Travis Phelps pitched five innings and struck out six, but allowed four walks and three runs on five hits. Phelps drops to 1-1. After playing three scoreless innings, Charlotte scored three runs in the top of the fourth, keyed by shortstop Bobby Smith?s two-out, two-run home run to left field. Left fielder Mario Valenzuela singled home Mike Bell for the third run of the inning. The Indians tried to mount a rally in the sixth inning. J. J. Hardy, who went 4-4 today, led off the inning with a single to right field, advancing on Chris Magruder?s infield single, taking third on a fielder?s choice and scoring on Mark Johnson?s bloop single to center. The RBI was Johnson?s first of the season (his 47th at-bat). However, Jon Nunnally ground into a double play, stranding two runners. In the ninth, Charlotte added another run when catcher Jonathan Aceves scored from first on Bryant Nelson?s double off the wall in right-center. Knights closer Gary Majewski walked the leadoff batter in the ninth, then got Corey Hart to fly out and induced a game-ending double play to earn his fourth save of the year. This marks the first time this season that the Indians have dropped consecutive games. The Indians and Knights will play the third of a four-game series in Indianapolis Thursday at 7 p.m.

  9. Beloit Game Summary (Timber Rattlers' Site): Ryan Feierabend won his fourth straight game as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Beloit Snappers 8-2 Tuesday night. Evel Bastida-Martinez drove in three runs and Josh Ellison had three hits and scored three runs for the Rattlers. Ellison started things off for the Rattlers with a lead off double in the first inning. Josh Womack followed one out later with an RBI double. An infield grounder by Bastida-Martinez knocked in a run and an RBI single by Chris Colton made it 3-0. The Rattlers (11-14) added three more runs in the bottom of the second. Michael Cox had a sacrifice fly to drive in one. Bastida-Martinez plated two more with a single back through the middle to make the score 6-0. Wisconsin added to the lead with an RBI triple by Chris Colton in the fifth. Beloit (11-14) got on the board with an RBI double by Lou Palmisano in the sixth. The run against Feierabend was the first he allowed at home in 16-2/3 innings. Feierabend worked seven innings and gave up just two runs on five hits. A sacrifice fly by Chris Collins put Wisconsin up 8-1 in the sixth. The Snappers got another run on a solo homer by Robby Deevers in the top of the seventh. Game three of the series is scheduled for Wednesday night. Nibaldo Acosta (1-3, 2.28 ERA) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Luis Pena (2-0, 2.75 ERA) is slated to start for the Snappers. Game time is 6:35 pm.
  10. Final: High Desert 10, Lake Elsinore (Padres) 8 Mavericks almost wake us up on a sour note -- almost http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif High Desert Site Game Summary: Hopefully the Mavericks can put up the sound bites from the two ninth-inning HR's up on their site, as they've done in the past -- please http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ... EURE GOIN? HOME A WINNER!Jeff Eure?s two-run bomb in the bottom of the ninth capped off a wild-finish for the High Desert Mavericks, rallying from down one run to beat the Lake Elsinore Storm, 10-8, before 1,649 at Mavericks Stadium on Tuesday night. Eure?s heroics were preceded by John Vanden Berg?s game-tying homer two batters earlier, a solo shot to left for his second of the year that tied the score at 8 apiece and injected life back into the Maverick squad. Evening up the series at a game apiece, the Mavericks (11-15) jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the fourth inning. Entering the inning with the score tied at one, RBI singles by Kennard Bibbs and Ozzie Chavez put the Mavs out in front 4-1. Then Dan Boyd stepped to the plate and launched a three-run blast over the right-field wall putting the Mavericks into a seemingly comfortable lead. David Bradley, who had been cruising along through the first five innings, ran into trouble as he gave up two runs on only two hits before getting Steve Baker to pop out with the bases loaded to end the Storm?s rally. After a quick one-two-three bottom half of the sixth, Dan Kolb entered the game for the Mavericks and the Mavs four run lead quickly disappeared as the Storm rallied to plate four runners on just five hits, tying the game at seven. In the eighth inning Lake Elsinore was able to take advantage of a couple of Maverick miscues to take the lead. Steve Baker reached base on an infield single. He then stole second base and was able to move up to third on an erroneous throw by Vanden Berg. Kolb, working from the windup, balked in Baker to put the Storm ahead for the first time setting the stage for Eure?s walkoff heroics off of Storm closer Mike Wodnicki. Craig Breslow (1-0) picked up the win by pitching a scoreless ninth, while Wodnicki (1-1) took the loss. The Mavs are back in action Wednesday night at Mavericks Stadium against Lake Elsinore for game three of the four-game set, with Forrest Martin (0-2) taking the hill for High Desert against counterpart Gabe Ribas (2-2). 11. David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update: THE BREAKFAST CLUBIf there's to be an anthem for this series, it's to the hit batter........ In a six-game series where 14 batters were hit, including Rickie Weeks three times and Chris Barnwell twice, it's so fitting that Dwane Bacon's helmet went spinning on just the third pitch of the game from Chris Saenz........ I went through the boxes and couldn't find a greater concentration of hit batters in six games than this....... 12 in five games in August of 1996 was the closest I came to, but it wasn't just against one team, although this series didn't match the six hit batters in a single game that occured vs. Jacksonville on April 25, 1986. Would you call this a beanball war? I recall in Monday's game the home plate ump taking a notebook out of his back pocket and writing something after Richard Lewis was hit. Maybe some fines will be forthcoming.........There's a guy you need to keep off the basepaths, and he hits him....... Bacon retaliated by stealing 2nd base. On a 3-1 pitch to Jemel Speaman, Saenz' throw to pick him off sailed high and away and Bacon made third........ So here we have the best control pitcher on the staff hitting a batter and then throwing the ball away after a string of 11 games in which the Stars had made only three errors....... Quite a peculiar start to this game. It was probably lost on the more than 6,000 enthusiastic elementary and middle school kids who got a breather from school to have fun at the ballpark toward the end of their school year. One of them even brought his glove and made a catch in the first inning..... This turned out to be an incredibly successful promotion, for the lack of a better word, one that will certainly be repeated next year. It balanced out the poor weather-influenced show-up of Monday afternoon....... Even though the kids probably didn't know our best pitcher from a ham sandwich or care less about his pitching tendencies, they had fun yelling for one more strikeout under the radio booth, as one kid did, and that's all that counts....... They are baseball's future. Let them have fun. Spearman walked to put runners on the corners with nobody out....... With a 1-0 count on Matt Creighton, Spearman broke for second. Joel Alvarado threw down but his bad throw got away, Bacon scored, and the Diamond Jaxx had a run on two errors without a ball getting out of the infield......... Did I say this game started out peculiar?........ The two errors in the first inning also broke a string of five consecutive games without an error, two short of the club record......... Despite the gift-wrapped run, Saenz got out of the inning without any further anomalies. Hammond, Indiana left-hander Carmen Pignatiello, working on three days rest, got two quick outs in the 1st inning before walking Rickie Weeks....... Prince Fielder, on a .378 tear with five HRs and 10 RBIs over his last 11 games, hammered an 0-and-1 breaking ball to left-center field carrying over Bacon's head, an opposite-field bomb, and the Stars led, 2-1....... Prince came in as the Southern League's home run leader and 2nd in runs driven in, 3rd in slugging in his big leap to Double-A. That was an ominous start........ In the 2nd inning, Enrique Cruz worked himself to a 2-2 count and breaking out of a 3-for-40 slump, hit a high drive to left-center again over the head of Dwane Bacon....... Saenz followed with a slice over the right field line that sneaked just over the corner inside the foul pole for the first home run hit by a Stars pitcher since Allen Levrault hit one off Chattanooga's Scott MacRae on May 11, 1999. The Stars put this one in the hamper in the 4th inning after Johnny Raburn singled, the first of three hits for him. Weeks then reached on a throwing error allowing Raburn to go to third base and Weeks into second on the bad throw by Ronny Cedeno...... Prince Fielder was intentionally passed and in stepped Brad Nelson. Working on a ball and a strike, Nelly doubled down the left field line, scoring two to make it 6-1........ With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Chris Barnwell lined a ball to center field all the way to the wall for a triple --- his first as a Huntsville Star --- to drive in two....... Joel Alvarado's ground out scored Barney to cap the scoring, and giving the Stars, at the time, a 9-1 lead. Saenz won his fourth straight start, if you count his win for Milwaukee two Saturdays ago. He lowers his ERA to 3.26 in 19 1/3 innings........ The Stars take Wednesday off so they can travel to Jacksonville to start their first southern swing of the year. Dennis Sarfate (1-2, 6.63) will face lefty Glenn Bott (1-2, 2.86), who has pitched in the California League the past two seasons........ The Stars need one more run to get their 14,000th in club history. Ryan Knox, as expected, was promoted to Indianapolis. He received word after Monday's game. He did not play in today's 10-inning game against Charlotte....... Catcher Alex Delgado, returning from a family emergency in Puerto Rico, fills his spot on the roster, giving the Stars three catchers for the time being........ Knox was in a 2-for-17 slide at the time of his promotion....... Last year, he was mired in a 1-for-22 slump when he was promoted. He wound up finding the International League more to his liking, hitting .275 in 36 games, so I wouldn't worry about him. Knox may not be a multi-tool player, but he knows how to win and he'll be a real big asset to the Indians.

  13. Final: Charlotte (White Sox) 3, Indianapolis 1, 10 innings Minor league vet RHP Todd Erdos isn't making many friends with Indy fans since his acquisition recently... Indianapolis Game Summary: Charlotte (13-13) prevailed in a pitcher?s dual Tuesday night at Victory Field, defeating Indianapolis (15-8), 3-1, in 10 innings. The Tribe is now 2-2 in extra innings affairs. Tribe starter Jorge De La Rosa shut out Charlotte for three innings. In the fourth, the Knights got on the board first as Ryan Hankins doubled to left and scored on a bases loaded walk from Tribe reliever Matt Wise, who had just stepped in for De La Rosa. Jeff Liefer then smashed his third homer in four days, over the right field wall, off Charlotte reliever Mitch Wylie, to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth, 1-1. Indianapolis threatened in the seventh off Wylie. Corey Hart beat out an infield single to deep shortstop to start the frame. He advanced to second on Scott Sheldon?s sacrifice bunt. Mark Johnson then hit a sharp line drive to left field. The left fielder, Mario Valenzuela, speared the ball, then threw a dart to shortstop Jose Valentin covering second to double up Hart. In the ninth, Hart singled with two outs to center off Charlotte reliever Jose Santiago. He then stole second base, but Sheldon lined out to center to end the threat, sending the game into extra innings. Indianapolis reliever Todd Erdos (0-1) entered the game in the 10th and was greeted by Mike Bell?s opposite field two-out, two-run homer, which proved to be the game winning hit. "I try to do the same thing each time I go to the plate," said Bell. "I was looking to make contact and got a little lucky there." Santiago (1-1) put down the Tribe in order in the bottom of the 10th to preserve the victory. The two teams meet Wednesday as Indianapolis will send right-hander Travis Phelps (0-0, 9.00) against Charlotte right-hander Felix Diaz (4-0, 2.01). Ryan Knox will join Indianapolis tomorrow as he has been recalled from Double-A Huntsville. Knox, 26, appeared in 23 games for the Stars. He hit .250 with one home run, 8 RBI and stole four bases. Knox hit .385 when leading off an inning with Huntsville and .286 with runners on base. The 6-1, 190-pounder from Peoria, Ill., appeared in 36 games with Indianapolis last year. He hit .275 with no homers and 5 RBI and stole 17 bases.

Here's the Charlotte audio link: www.charlotteknights.com/.../index.htm Don't have JDLR's final numbers yet, but Matt Wise and Chris Michalak (striking out a rehabbing Jose Valentin) snuffed a rally in the 7th. Check out what could be a dandy finish.

  19. OF Ryan Knox has been removed from the Huntsville site roster page. Not necessarily going out on a limb, he's now in Indianapolis again, based on Huntsville's schedule finally freeing up a bit. He'll see plenty of time in David Krynzel's absence, with veteran Jon Nunnally returning to a DH / 4th OF role.
  20. Huntsville Site Game Summary: In front of 6911 enthusiastic elementary and middle school children, the Stars (14-12) thumped West Tenn (11-14), launching three homers in the first two innings and sealing the game with a five-run fourth in a 9-3 win on Tuesday morning at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars earned a split of the six-game series with the Diamond Jaxx. Prince Fielder homered for a league-high ninth time, slamming a two-run shot to left-center in the first, then eight-hitter Enrique Cruz and pitcher Chris Saenz launched consecutive solo shots in the second. In the fourth, Brad Nelson followed an intentional walk to Fielder with a two-run double to left, and Chris Barnwell tripled to dead center, scoring two more runs. Joel Alvarado?s groundout scored Barnwell for a 9-1 Stars lead. Saenz won his fourth straight start, including three for the Stars and a spot start for Milwaukee. Saenz (3-1) permitted three runs, just one earned, on four hits and one walk while fanning six over five innings. Fernando Rijo, Ryan Costello and Paul Stewart combined to shut out the Jaxx over the final four innings. Jaxx starter Carmen Pignatiello (2-1) suffered his first loss, surrendering nine runs, eight earned, on nine hits and four walks over four frames. Huntsville travels to Jacksonville to start a four-game set with East leader Jacksonville. Righty Tim Bausher (1-2, 2.40) meets Suns left-hander Ryan Ketchner (2-0, 1.32). Game time is 6:05 p.m. CT.
  21. Daily Press High Desert Game Story: I know what Manager Mel Queen was trying to say here, but it still came out wrong: "It's one loss," High Desert manager Mel Queen said. "It doesn't matter if it's 1-0 or 10-1. It's one loss. In fact, if I'm going to lose, I'd rather lose 10-1 than 1-0 because in a 1-0 game, you got a chance of winning that game." Also, read the game notes at the end of the article for more discussion on the official scorer's decision regarding Sunday night's game. 23. David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update: IN A RUTThings are so bunched up right now in the Western Division that even though the Stars have been in a .500 rut for the last 10 games (win one, lose one), they are just ½ game behind Birmingham for 1st place....... But watch out for Mobile. They took two from a strong Carolina team, that compares closely to Huntsville on paper, and they are tied now with the Stars for second place........ The Stars recent aversion to a streak of any kind reminds me for some reason of Dick Scott's teams in 1995 and 1996, which is not good. Those teams were truly mediocre. When I look at the talent on this team, I see the best W-L Pct. in the SL, but it isn't happening........ One can look perhaps at the box score and blame the season-high 13 left on base for this one. They blew quite a few chances today, but to say there's some correlation between the number of runners left on base and losing may be hasty. My thoughts are inconclusive........ Whatever conclusion I have here is hasty because I have a small sample, but the Stars have played 32 games the past two seasons, including this one, in which they have left 10 or more runners on base, and they are 22-10 in those games....... Perhaps the reason for this is that leaving runners has been the residue of some good rallies, but it also can be, as it looked today, the result of poor clutch performance. I'd have to do a more extensive study to see where this has historically fallen, but it's interesting to note that in 2002, the Stars were 8-9 in games where the Stars left 10 or more runners on base....... I have faith that the Stars will heat up this summer, like they usually do. June seems to be the best month, historically. The Stars are going to have to learn to keep speedy Dwane Bacon off the bases next time....... Bacon shares the SL lead of 14 stolen sacks with Eric Reed of Carolina....... In six games against the Stars, he has five of them, and they hurt the Stars on this windy, overcast, 55° afternoon........ In the 10th inning, he drew a 2-out walk, then promptly stole 2nd and 3rd base, setting up the winning run. That little bloop single off the end of the bat of Richard Lewis would have meant nothing if Bacon's legs didn't get the Diamond Jaxx in position to break a 2-2 tie and beat the Stars, 4-2, at nearly-vacant Joe Davis Stadium......... The attendance of 419, and I can understand people not showing up considering the gloomy, chilly, sunless day it was, was the 2nd lowest for a Stars game in history. It missed the record low that was set only three weeks ago by six.......The sun came out very briefly in the 7th inning and again in the 10th, but it was jacket and blanket day here......... It's supposed to wam up to 70° tomorrow for a school day affair. Kids from all over the Tennessee Valley are expected to be at the Joe for a 10 AM game. Over 6,000 showed up to nearly fill Montgomery's Riverwalk Stadium recently in a similar affair. There's no reason for this game to have been decided by Bacon in the 10th inning....... Jeff Housman pitched one of the best games of his career with the Stars and there have been some. In Game 2 of the Western Division Playoffs last year, he held Birmingham scoreless for seven innings, allowing just two hits for an important Stars victory. In his debut for the Stars on July 20, he hurled six scoreless innings, giving up just one hit to the Diamond Jaxx, piggy-backing with Jason Shelley's huge debut that day........ But Housman, who's best when his sinker and slider are working, never struck out more than five until this game......... The nine Ks is not just a Housman high, it's a season high. It began with Housman striking out the side in the Diamond Jaxx first inning...... From that point, it looked like it would be all he would need as the Stars scored in the bottom half........ Tony Gwynn, Jr. led off with a walk and advanced when Brandon Gemoll grounded to the right side, but Gwynn was thrown out at third on a bad baserunning play trying to break from second on a ground ball by Rickie Weeks........ With Weeks on first base, Prince Fielder, on a 1-and-0 pitch, hammered one into right field over the head of Mike Mallory and off the wall. Weeks was windmilled home. The relay throw was on the money, but Weeks got his foot on the plate before Giovany Soto's tag was applied, if it was applied at all. Weeks then knocked down Soto for added measure, I guess to try to knock the ball from him. Weeks was thrown out at the plate in a similar rendezvous in the 3rd inning on a double by Brad Nelson. Weeks again put a hit on Soto, but Soto was prepared, stepped aside, and made the tag to end the inning. The Diamond Jaxx tied it with back-to-back doubles by Matt Craig and Mike Mallory in the 5th inning. Mallory, whose average was .200 entering the series, drove in two runs on the day, and is now up to .254. Against Stars pitching this season, he's 5-for-13 (.385) with five RBIs and three runs scored. The Stars would rally after a pop out by Gwynn........Gemoll powered a ball just inside the right field line for a double, then Weeks hit a two-hop grounder past Lewis into right field. There was no throw as Gemoll scored standing up...... Fielder was then hit on the knee by Blasko, causing the 19-year old slugger to yell out something that rhymes with "duck", and in a spacious ballpark filled with only 400 people, I can't imagine anyone in the park who couldn't hear his pain. I'm thinking with Robert Portnoy's window open in his radio booth, that it might have been even been heard over the air. With FCC administration parrot Michael Powell issuing some really anal fines to broadcasters lately, I hope Resident Bush's moral brigade doesn't shut us down, but it was so quiet at the Joe today, that you could hear conversations during play between the manager and the umpire, the players and the coaches. Really interesting, if not always insightful....... Fielder was left on base as Nelson lined into a 5-3 double play. Matt Craig's single to right-center sent Matt Creighton, who led off the 7th with a double down the left field line, to third, setting up Mallory's 2nd RBI, a fly ball out to right, tying the game again....... Giovany Soto's hit-and-run single then sent Craig to 3rd.......... Frank Kremblas kept the D'Jaxx from going ahead that inning in a managerial chess match with Bobby Dickerson....... Sensing the squeeze with the runners on the corners and Ronnie Cedeno at the plate, the Wizard called for one pitchout to third, and then another........ The second caught Craig off base in a rundown. Kade Johnson fed to Chris Barnwell. Barney chased him toward the plate with Fielder waiting. Fielder chased him a few steps then applied the tag and it would remain 2-2 until the 10th inning. The Stars, meanwhile, squandered chances......... In the 7th, the Stars loaded the bases on a one-out single, another hit batter (Weeks again for the 2nd time), and a two-out walk to Nelson, but Kade lined out to short to end the inning.......... Kade is .444 against the rest of the league, but against the Diamond Jaxx this season, he's 0-for-11. He's made contact. Only one strikeout. But he's wearing that sombrero ...... Kade also ended a potential rally in the 9th with runners on first and second when he hit a broken bat liner right back to winning pitcher Russ Rohlicek to send the game into extra innings. Other than that failed squeeze play at the plate, the most exciting was turned in by Rickie Weeks in the 8th inning........ After Bacon reached on a perfectly placed bunt single to lead off the inning, Lewis hit a liner that tipped off the glove of a leaping Weeks. The ball fell to the ground and Rickie instinctively picked up the ball and submarined it to Enrique Cruz. The bang-bang play at second went our way for once, and Bacon was out. Roberto Giron was perfect in the top of the 9th on two grounders and a strikeout, but that incredulous dunker to right by Lewis, scoring Bacon, who was off on the pitch in the 10th did him in...... He allowed just his second and third run raised his ERA from 0.82 to 2.08. If the Stars recent win one-lose one pattern continues, Chris Saenz (2-1, 3.37) should have a win in his bag tomorrow morning against lefty Carmen Pignatiello (2-0, 4.13). Set your alarm. It's breakfast at the Joe. The Stars have now committed one error or less in 18 consecutive games, the best streak since June-July 1987, when they remarkably kept it going for 29 consecutive games........ They've made just three errors in their last 11 games........ Enrique Cruz, who made five errors in his first eight games, hasn't made one since April 17....... Jeff Housman's nine Ks is the most by a Stars pitcher since Jason Shelley struck out nine against Mobile on August 16 of last year......... The Stars are now 10 runs away from a milestone of 14,000 in their history.
