  1. It seems that this year we pick #2 and know less than years when we pick #11 (Krynzel), #12 (Jones), #7 (Fielder). Fielder was a bit of a suprise but his name was out there, Jones and Krynzel were somewhat anti climatic. Handicapping the three: Sleeth: he seems to compare favorably with Kris Benson when he came out. Good makeup, excellent but not elite stuff, with a low-mid 90's fastball and good but developing breaking stuff. Tough minded kid who will work hard. Nothing I've seen about him is overwhelming and doesn't seem to possess the ceiling that a Mike Jones does, but none the less would be a great addition to any system. Delmon Young: seems like a four tool player with great power and hitting skills, strong arm, and good defensive skills. Doesn't sound like a burner, but runs well enough. A Cliff Floyd type player? Negatives seem to be age, and overall athleticism. Rickie Weeks: a five tool player. ALl indications are like the aforementioned athletes that this is a quality ball player and person as well. Hard worker who is now approaching 200 lbs at 6 ft tall which means he could possibly project to upwards of 5 positions (SS, 2B, CF, LF, RF) whether he hits like a corner of or has the defense to stick in the middle infield seems to be the biggest ?. Great speed, great hitting skills, and improving yet impressive power. Seems to compare to an Alfonso Soriano type player, Corey Patterson might be another comparison. I don't know if he has Soriano's power, although I think Soriano gets more pitches to hit than any player in MLB given that lineup. Who would you rather pitch to Soriano or Giambi? I'll take my chances with Soriano, GIambi has done it for too long. Being sandwiched between the Jeter's, Giambi's, Williams, etc...has really helped him. Put him on the Crew and Soriano hits .285 with 25-30 jacks and steals 35 bases. I think Weeks could project to .300-.330 with 15-20 jacks and 40 steals. (based on reports, I've obviously never seen him. So who do you take? Benson (healthy?), Floyd? Soriano? Interesting call...I don't see how you can lose. Can't wait until Tuesday!
  2. Soriano? pretty close to the franchise. Although when you have 9 quality starters, I guess he isn't.
  3. Yes the SWAC is not a great baseball league, but extrapolating that to a high school league is foolish. HE's in college for gosh sakes, he's playing against college level ball players! He's not in high school and while his league isn't the big 12 it is still D1.
  4. that and he led DI this year in hitting with an astonishing .493 batting average. Good god is that ridiculous.
  5. Guys before you freak out, consider this... How many times has Drew Olson seen any of these prospects play? ZERO (I know it is zero live for an absolute fact as a family member is his colleague). Drew Olson has watched a lot of baseball. I don't dispute that, however that is not to suggest that he is a revered talent scout. How many times have we (this board) seen Weeks, Young, Stauffer, or Sleeth? I would venture to say a grand total of 3 games? Is that enough to make an assessment? No. I would love to see a position player in the worst way as I think we are void of corner outfield prospects (DJ Clark getting close), we have no 3rd base prospects (At 6-6, I think Hart is too big), we are devoid of catching prospects, and our middle infield spots after Hardy are not strong (particularly with Murray's auspicous debut), however the draft is a crapshoot. Look at Harrington thread above, he was offered a five spot by the Rockies meaning they viewed him as very close to a sure thing and now what is he doing? Nothing. I'd prefer a batsman, but our system is weak on arms as well. We have about 3-5 bonafide MLB starter candidates within 2-3 years, guys that have big time stuff and 5-10 that are soft tossing overachievers that will likely flame out (see Mieses). If Melvin likes Stauffer, great, if Jack K likes Sleeth, great it would go against the grain a bit but is not the biggest reach ever. Melvin has a proven track record for finding big time bats in the draft. Look at the offense in Texas? Young, Texiera, and Blalock all drafted by Melvin.. If he goes pitching it may be because they feel they can find some big time hitters down the line. Lastly, to suggest that Olson has the complete trust of the Brewer brain trust to be given key information when they are clearly not wanting to reveal their preference for the sake of gamesmanship and finances is foolish. Olson is being given what Melvin/Payne want him to know and that must be taken with a grain of salt. That being said, my order of preference: 1. Weeks 2. Young 3. Harvey 4. Stauffer/Sleeth based on media perception, position and their scouting reports.
  6. Young is platooning with Eric Munson and has pretty poor numbers. His career numbers aren't bad, but certainly are not worthy of an elite selection in the draft. sports.espn.go.com/mlb/pl...atsId=5699 I was hoping/thinking someone might say a young Cliff Floyd.
  7. anyone have a big league comparison, aside from his brother? If that is the case he is unworthy of selection in the first 10 rounds.
