  1. DeJesus would be great, but it seems his name has been "out there" for a while and still no one has acquired him which seems odd. I won't argue that the lineup on its own is better. However, without seeing your pitching staff, it's difficult to determine which team would be better. Good pitching still beats good hitting. Pitching still wins titles.
  2. Nate 82 - I'm not trying to be argumentative, but I'm a bit puzzled by what you value most. The lineup you posted in the beginning of this thread had Taveras (.331 career OBP) leading off and Hardy (.329 career OBP) hitting 2nd. Plus, Taveras OBP was aided by one good year (OBP of .367) which was in just 97 games. Otherwise, Taveras has had OBPs of .325 - .333 - and .308. Hardy, meanwhile, other than this season, is in the .320s. Plus, you have an unproven Escobar in the lineup. I don't think that's a ringing endorsement for offense.
  3. Hey, I agree Lincecum is the guy I would target, but I don't believe the Giants are letting him go. I just don't believe Fielder will be getting better before he gets worse and he may lose value in the next couple of years. I hear what you're saying in terms of OBP...I was a leadoff hitter, I love OBP. However, I still believe in starting pitching over one hitter in the lineup. Perhaps there is a better option than Blalock, but I'm not sure there's one the Crew could afford in terms of players dealt or money. Also, I believe DeWitt's on-base ability ahead of the middle of the order will help. Hopefully Hart's awful September/October was just a wicked slump at the wrong time and his OBP goes back up.
  4. Nate 82, you truly believe that Fielder + Suppan is 20 wins better than Blalock + Sabathia + Cain?
  5. 1) Hart RF 2) Dewitt 3B (Acquired from Dodgers via trade) 3) Braun LF 4) Blalock 1B (Acquired from Rangers via trade) 5) Hardy SS 6) Weeks 2B 7) Cameron CF 8) Kendall C Bench options Branyan Counsell Kapler Dillon Nelson Durham (doubtful) Rivera Rotation Sabathia Gallardo Cain (Acquired from Giants via trade) Parra Bush Bullpen Torres Riske Stetter Shouse Villanueva McClung Beimel (free agent) Traded - Fielder, Hall, Suppan, Gwynn, Brewer (SS), Scarpetta (SP), Dillard (P), Rivas (SP) Not re-signed - Mota, Gagne, Sheets
  6. Prince's AB in the 9th was a huge disappointment. He did a nice job to foul some pitches off and had the advantage at 3-2 versus Lidge as his numbers vs. lefties aren't nearly as good as vs. righties. That pitch, as mentioned, really wasn't close. If he gets on, chances are Lidge would have had to give Hardy a fastball or two to hit because he couldn't locate the slider and Hardy was laying off of it. As far as Hart goes, baseball somehow finds the guys that are struggling...hitting or fielding. While Hart did look a little better, it is almost unfathomable that he couldn't even get a piece of a straight fastball at 93mph belt high, middle of the plate. That's just the way it goes sometimes.
  7. For me, it's gotta be Runnin' Down a Dream by Tom Petty. A legendary guitar riff and a fitting phrase.
  8. Of course, I know he was trying to throw strikes, but that doesn't mean he wasn't affected mentally. The previous walks may or may not have been a mental issue, that's harder to argue. However, I'm sure the previous walks and subsequent run to 2-0 on Karstens got in his head, causing a mental struggle. These are guys that can consistently hit spots within an inch of a glove...the plate gives much more leeway. And I understand the issue with how boo-happy Miller Park has become...I still believe it has to do with the large amount of casual fans that have taken to the team. I rarely if ever will boo, and as others have said, it will be because of poor effort, mental mistakes, etc. I truly hope for these next 5 games, however, people try to put as much energy into each AB from start to finish... As I tell my players, baseball creates the greatest satisfaction when you succeed because you're expected to fail so often.
  9. No, not anytime... Perhaps you're pitching around someone....Perhaps you're overthrowing or can't locate a breaking ball. Failing to throw a fastball over the plate to a pitcher (with the exception of pitchers that have proven to hit well) at 2-0 or 3-0...when he's going to be taking, indicates a mental block....possibly "aiming" the ball or worrying about not walking him.
  10. In this case... a walk on four pitchers against the pitcher...that is mental.
  11. Wisconsinfan, thank you for bringing up the 4-pitch walk as a mental mistake. Physical mistakes happen and, so be it. Mental errors are the unacceptable occurrences. For instance, say Weeks doesn't charge a high chopper that he could get in the air or on a short hop, but he lays back and the second bounce gets by him because it's an in-between hop with mad top spin. That is a mental error that caused the physical one...therefore boo-worthy. Hanging slider...physical mistake.
  12. Rluzinski replies: Let's hope CC doesn't give up a couple of early runs. He'll get what he deserves. If he was being serious here, I apologize.
  13. Wow. I know your 16,000 posts probably give you the right...but you're certainly an expert on the art of condescension, rluzinski!
  14. A major league pitcher, who was just handed a one-run lead, walks the first hitter on 4 pitches. That is boo-worthy. I didn't have a problem with the HR...he hung a slider, it happens. It's the inexcusable 4-pitch walk to a mediocre hitter that cannot happen. Regardless...I want Mota to have the ball late in tomorrow's game, and Thursday's and all weekend if need be.
  15. I really hope you're kidding olsonnet.
  16. For all those who are so much on the Weeks bandwagon, I understand his recent stats and his quality OBP over the years. However, as much as I love stats and use them for my teams, sometimes the "eye test" is all a manager/coach has. Stats can be deceiving (as can the eye test) and I'm glad we can have debates like this, but there may not be an absolute right answer. I still think for tonight Durham makes sense with his numbers vs. Dempster (I know, small sample) .545/.615/.818/1.434
  17. The different kinds of bad defense is a big factor in my mind. Not making a diving play or ranging far to either side is less detrimental than kicking a routine grounder or throwing away a turn for a DP. As I said, most games are lost, not won. And maybe some coaches blow it out of proportion, but baseball intelligence and moxie count for a lot down the stretch in my mind. Not when there's a huge talent gap, but in this case with guys performing similarly, Durham has an edge in those areas as well.
  18. How has he been a better player since the All-Star break? Or overall? He has great potential and flashes, but that doesn't necessarily mean a better player.
  19. I do agree Durham's not an everyday player anymore, but I don't see any reason he can't start 2 of 3 games in each series, especially with the off-day Monday. He clearly should start today with his numbers vs. Dempster, then I think it's a toss-up with which game Weeks plays versus Marquis or Harden. Matchups will matter in the series after this one, but I think the edge, in general, needs to go to Durham. I think he can be extremely effective playing 8 games in 13 days... 5 days off (4 games plus Monday's team off day).
  20. As a baseball coach, I see many more positive attributes that help the team in Ray Durham as opposed to Rickie Weeks. I love Weeks' range and flashes of brilliance offensively, but Durham's steadiness with the glove, experience, ability to hit good pitching, higher contact, etc. gives the Brewers more of what they need at this time. In general in baseball, it is not the great plays you make that wins games, but the routine plays you do not make. Most games, at every level in baseball, are lost as opposed to won (exception being a dominant starting pitcher).
  21. I have no idea what Sveum will do, but this is the lineup I'd like to see... Durham 2B Braun LF Fielder 1B Cameron CF Hardy SS Hart RF Lamb 3B Kendall C Sabathia P
  22. At least the Brewers are playing nice and loose on the road, hey Corey? And, although the offense again was bad, when you're manager has a chance to put your team in the best position to win, he fails miserably. I don't care how "hot" a hitter is when his splits are god-awful, you stick with them. At least throw 4 sliders away and see if he chases. As a baseball coach myself, the Brewers truly have succeeded in spite of Yost.
  23. I almost never boo, except for an atrocious play, effort, etc. Although, I agree the booing has gotten completely out of hand recently at Miller Park. However, maybe Corey should have picked a better time to bring this up. First off, as some have mentioned, when the team is struggling it sounds like he's giving the team an excuse for their poor play. Secondly, he looked like a Pat Burrell-type, sup-par defender in right field last night. Two balls that he should have caught (not saying they were easy, but should have been caught) cost the Brewers a couple of runs. Thirdly, the team still scored only 3 runs last night. Perhaps their failures lately have more to do with themselves and not the home fans. Last night was no different than what happened on the homestand. These guys may be a little weak in the mental game, which doesn't bode well for a playoff run either. As far as the booing, somehow the Yankees have won a few World Series titles despite some unruly fans. When it comes down to it, the talent (physical and mental) will determine who rises to the top.
  24. I'm looking to play fall softball this year and was wondering if any teams in the Milwaukee and surrounding area had a need for a player. I tried to get my own going, but too many of my guys backed out. Thanks.
  25. Pedro, I'd love to be thrown into the mix if there's still time. I like to pick my "battles" on brewerfan, but I can't stay away for more than a couple of hours and am practically a walking advertisment for the site. Thanks again for your generosity.
