  1. Actually, the last second-round pick that panned out was Gallardo. Since then: Brewer, Adams, Dykstra, Lintz, Garfield, Walla, and Nelson. Obviously some could still figure it out, but the results haven't exactly been promising.
  2. This is interesting. As my Power 50 comments indicate, I had thought Thornburg's curveball was the more advanced secondary offering. It's great to hear he's developed his changeup so well.
  3. Final: DSL Brewers 12, @DSL Mariners 5 DSL Brewers box scoreStill undefeated! Deivi Mejia had three hits and drove in five runs, Raul Mondesi also had three hits and a walk, wunderkind Orlando Arcia walked three times, Yonki Hernandez singled twice and was hit by a pitch, and Juan de Leon had two hits and a walk. Ruben "Sanchez" Ozuna DH'd and had a hit and a walk. Elvis Rubio, who didn't play yesterday, had a tough afternoon, 0-5 with three punch-outs. Osmel Perez got the win but had a disappointing outing, allowing four runs in five innings. He only allowed six baserunners (five hits and a hit batter; no walks), but allowed two homers. He struck out three. 17-year-old LHP Marcos Padilla had an uneven pro debut, working two innings and allowing an unearned run on a hit and three walks with no strikeouts. 4. Final: Brevard County 4, @Daytona 0 Brevard County box scoreHiram Burgos pitched a gem, tossing seven scoreless innings with six strikeouts; he allowed three hits, a walk, and a hit batter, and posted a 9/2 GO/FO. Santo Manzanillo finished the shutout with two innings, striking out three and allowing two hits and a walk. Anyone know if Brock Kjeldgaard has been down to the crossroads lately? He knocked two more out of the park, giving him six in his last ten games. Hunter Morris and Shea Vucinich also homered. Scooter Gennett perked up with a single and a walk. Kentrail Davis and D'Vontrey Richardson were each 1-4, with Kentrail stealing his 11th base and Richardson being caught for the fifth time. Khris Davis had a rare off night, 0-4 with three strikeouts. Shawn Zarraga was also hitless, except for the pitch that hit him.Brevard County play-by-play
  5. Final: Nashville 6, @New Orleans 1 Sounds Open Road Trip With 6-1 Victory In New OrleansNashville Sounds METAIRIE, La. - The Nashville Sounds opened their road trip with a 6-1 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs on Saturday evening at Zephyr Field. The win was the third in a row for Nashville (24-31), which continued its recent dominance in New Orleans. The Sounds have won 15 of their last 21 games played at Zephyr Field. Left-hander Sam Narron (4-2) picked up his team-leading fourth victory by tossing 5 2/3 innings of scoreless, four-hit ball for the Sounds. With the effort, the lanky southpaw lowered his team-leading ERA to 3.13 through 11 outings. Narron walked three batters and struck out five in his 99-pitch effort and helped his own cause with a 2-for-3 night at the plate. The Sounds grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Eric Farris drew a one-out walk from New Orleans starter Mariano Gomez and scored when Edwin Maysonet followed with an RBI double to center [audio]. Nashville extended its lead to 3-0 in the third. Narron led off with a single and scored a batter later when Brandon Boggs ripped a double to right. Boggs later scored the visitors' second run of the frame when he hustled home on a Maysonet sacrifice fly to center. Narron worked out of jams in the fourth and fifth to keep New Orleans off the board. In the fourth, the Z's loaded the bases with two outs before the southpaw escaped the jam by grounding out Jesus Merchan. An inning later, a single and walk gave the home team a pair of baserunners with only one out, but Narron induced an inning-ending double play groundout from former Sounds All-Star Vinny Rottino. The Sounds left the bases loaded in the sixth against Z's reliever Todd Doolittle, who induced an inning-ending popup from Narron. The Zephyrs broke up the Sounds' shutout bid in the seventh with a run off reliever Justin James on a two-out Mike Cervanek double. Nashville put the game on ice with a three-run eighth against Z's reliever Victor Garate, extending the lead to 6-1. Brett Carroll (2-for-4) opened the inning with a double before the next two batters were retired. After Caleb Gindl drew a two-out free pass, Taylor Green launched a run-scoring doubled to left to make it a 4-1 cushion. Pinch-hitter extraordinaire Erick Almonte followed with a two-run single center to stretch the visitors' lead to five. Gomez (0-1) took a loss in his first Triple-A appearance of the season after allowing three runs on seven hits over five innings of action. The teams continue their series with another 6:00 p.m. matchup on Sunday evening. Right-hander Amaury Rivas (3-5, 4.65) will take the hill for the Sounds and try to end his seven-start winless stretch. He'll face New Orleans right-hander Tom Koehler (5-1, 4.24). Nashville box scoreNarron, a career .277 hitter, helped his own cause with two hits. Farris was on three times with a hit and two walks; he stole his sixth base but was caught for the fifth time. Gindl also singled, and Green also walked. Mat Gamel was 0-4. Daniel Ray Herrera worked a scoreless 8th, working around two hits; he faced four righties and one lefty. Robert Hinton pitched a scoreless 9th, walking one. Nashville play-by-play
  6. At Brevard County, CF D'Vontrey Richardson comes off the DL after a mercifully short stint, and C Mike Roberts goes on it. It's really nice of backup catchers to time their injuries so conveniently.
  7. From the Stars: Huntsville, AL – The Milwaukee Brewers have made a pair of roster moves that will impact their Double-A affiliate Huntsville Stars prior to the start of tonight’s series opener at Mobile. Infielder Zelous Wheeler has been transferred from Huntsville to Triple-A Nashville. Infielder Matt Cline has been activated from the disabled list. Wheeler started the season with the Sounds, but was placed on the disabled list after only two games. He was transferred to Huntsville on May 30 and went 5-for-18 (.278) with two doubles and a RBI in five games with the Stars. Cline was placed on the disabled list on May 30, retroactive to May 28. In 37 games this season, the infielder is batting .209 (23-110) with seven extra-base hits and four RBI.
  8. I said in the other thread I was surprised the Brewers hadn't been connected to Michael, but nevertheless, that's the first I've heard of them being interested in him.
  9. Not a stupid question at all! I'm almost certain that you're right, and it appears you're the first person to notice it. Very helpful, too, since Sanchez/Ozuna will be making his Power 50 debut this weekend. Thanks.
  10. Braddock was activated and McClendon optioned to Nashville:
  11. Final: @Nashville 5, Iowa 1 Sounds Close Homestand With 5-1 Win Over I-CubsNashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds ended their homestand on a high note on Friday evening, posting a 5-1 victory over the Iowa Cubs in front of 8,181 fans at Greer Stadium. With the win, Nashville (23-31) gained a split of the four-game series against their division rivals and finished its homestand with a 5-3 mark. Three Sounds hurlers (Mark DiFelice, Chase Wright, Sean Green) combined to hold Iowa to three hits on the evening, while the 6-7-8 hitters carried the load for Nashville offense. Mike Rivera, Caleb Gindl, and Taylor Green combined for a 6-for-11 evening with four RBIs and two runs scored. The Sounds took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on Rivera's two-run, bases-loaded single off Iowa starter Alberto Cabrera. Eric Farris (double) and Edwin Maysonet (hit by pitch) scored on the knock. I-Cubs first baseman Scott Moore halved the Sounds' lead to 2-1 in the second with a mammoth solo homer to center that cleared the 24-foot high batter's eye. The blast, which came against DiFelice, was his fifth of the year. Nashville got that run back in the bottom of the frame. Gindl drew an inning-opening walk and moved to third on a Green single before scoring when DiFelice laid down a sacrifice bunt up the first-base line. DiFelice allowed only one hit (Moore's homer) in his four innings of work in his first start of the year before being removed due to a pitch count limit. He struck out four batters and threw 53 pitches (32 for strikes). Wright (3-4) followed DiFelice and picked up the victory by hurling four innings of scoreless, two-hit ball. The left-hander's ERA as a reliever dropped to 1.20 (2er/15.0ip). Gindl upped the Nashville lead to 4-1 in the fourth when he led off with his fourth home run of the year, a solo shot to center off Cabrera. The Sounds extended their advantage to 5-1 in the sixth. Mat Gamel and Rivera opened the inning with consecutive singles before Gindl struck again, driving an opposite-field RBI double into the left field corner to plate Gamel and chase Cabrera from the contest. Iowa reliever Blake Parker came on and retired the next three batters in order, two by strikeout, to escape the jam with no further damage. Nashville fielders turned a triple play in the top of the seventh inning, the first for the Sounds in three seasons and the first in Pacific Coast League play during the 2011 campaign. Bryan LaHair led off with a double against Wright and Ty Wright walked to put a pair of runners on for Moore. On the first pitch from Wright, the Cubs' hitter smacked a sharp liner to Maysonet at shortstop, who stepped on second to retire LaHair then fired to first to Gamel to complete the triple-killing. Cabrera (1-1) suffered his first loss of the year after giving up five runs on eight hits over five-plus innings of action for Iowa. The Sounds head out of town for an eight-game, nine-day road trip beginning on Saturday with a 6:00 p.m. series opener in New Orleans. Left-hander Sam Narron (3-2, 3.46) will man the bump for Nashville to face Zephyrs right-hander Mariano Gomez, who will make his first appearance of the season. Nashville box scorePresumably there will be audio of the triple play up at some point, and maybe video tomorrow. Pretty great work by DiFelice in his first start since 2008; he didn't walk a batter. Gindl's gotten hot in a hurry, with seven hits in his last three games, four for extra-bases. Green is hitting .353/.395/.559 over his last ten games. Gamel also walked.Nashville play-by-play
  12. Final: @Huntsville 7, Tennessee 2 Huntsville box scoreCody Scarpetta was not very good, but he was good enough to get the win: 5 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, 1 HR, 84 pitches, 46 strikes. He did, however, notch his first professional hit--a two-run homer. Way to go, Cody! Dan Meadows was pretty impressive, striking out four in 2.2 scoreless innings of relief. Martin Maldonado and Hainley Statia each had three hits, and Sean Halton had two. Erik Komatsu was 1-5, and Logan Schafer took the collar. Huntsville play-by-playIt would somehow have seemed better if Scarpetta homered after allowing one himself, but either way, he came out about even: Huntsville Bottom of the 4thMartin Maldonado doubles (5) on a fly ball to right fielder Nelson Perez.Hainley Statia strikes out swinging.Cody Scarpetta homers (1) on a fly ball to left center field. 13. Final: @Dayton 8, Wisconsin 1 Dragons beat Rattlers 8-1Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers DAYTON, OH – The Dayton Dragons scored five runs in the second inning and cruised to an 8-1 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Friday night at Fifth Third Field. Daniel Corcino struck out 10 and allowed three hits over seven shutout innings to pick up his seventh win of the season for the Dragons. The loss drops the Rattlers to 3-8 on their current road trip. Dayton (28-27) sent nine men to the plate and scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning off Rattlers starting pitcher Austin Ross. The inning started with a leadoff single and a fly ball to center. A grounder to short was booted for an error to put two runners on with one out. Then, Tucker Barnhart singled to center to drive in the first run. Another single loaded the bases. Theo Bowe pulled an 0-2 pitch from Ross into the corner in right for a double that cleared the bases for a 4-0 Dayton lead. One out later, Billy Hamilton blooped in a single to center and the Dragons had a 5-0 lead. Barnhart stepped up with runners at first and second in the third inning and doubled to right to knock in two more runs and knock Ross out of the game. Dayton added another run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Jaren Matthews. Wisconsin (28-27) struggled to get anything going against Corcino. The Dragons starter didn’t walk a batter and faced two batters over the minimum of 21 in his seven innings of work. Tyler Roberts drove in a run with a single in the top of the eighth inning against Dayton reliever Pat Doyle. Wisconsin went on to load the bases with no outs against Doyle and the top order coming to the plate. However, Doyle struck out the next three batters to leave the bases loaded and keep Dayton in front 8-1. Game two of the series is Saturday night. Tyler Thornburg (4-0, 1.31) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Dayton will counter with Daniel Tuttle (4-2, 4.04). Game time is 6:07pm CDT. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 5:47pm. Wisconsin box scoreRoss hadn't been as excellent lately, but giving up seven runs in 2.1 innings is pretty disastrous. At least he didn't walk anyone! In fact, with 46 strikes in 63 pitches, it would seem he was throwing batting practice. Del Howell got into his first game since coming off the DL on May 30th and tossed two scoreless innings with a hit, a walk, a hit batter, and a strikeout. Greg Hopkins was the only Rattler on more than once, with a double and a single. Tyler Roberts, Reggie Keen, and Nick Shaw had the T-Rats' other hits. Cody Hawn and Yadiel Rivera each walked; that's Rivera's second walk against 30 strikeouts. 14. Final: @Bradenton 13, Brevard County 3 Brevard County box scoreWell that didn't go particularly well. Adrian Rosario allowed eight runs in three innings, and Mark Willinsky and Efrain Nieves combined to let in five more. Only Evan Anundsen, who worked a scoreless frame, emerged unscathed. Hunter Morris led the 'Tees with a homer and a double. Khris Davis was on three times with a double, a walk, and a HBP. It's tempting to say that Mike Brownstein scoring on that play, which would have made it 3-2 Bradenton, would have changed the complexion of the game, but I'm reminded of a quote by Sammy Baugh:
  15. Final: @DSL Brewers 4, DSL Rays 3 DSL Brewers box score5-0! Certainly a pleasant change from last year. Another pleasant change: inter-divisional games. The Cerveceros were down 3-0 before rallying with two runs each in the 6th and 7th. Starter Juan Francisco departed after allowing six baserunners and two runs while only getting three outs; 17-year-old RHP Jorge Ortega relieved him and was impressive, going five innings and allowing just a run on five hits while fanning five and walking none. Ortega also kept the ball down, posting a 6/2 K/BB. Hip hip Jorge! 16-year-old SS Orlando Arcia continues to look like a lock for the next Power 50, going 2-4 with his second homer. That's three multi-hit games in five tries for Arcia. 1B Deivi Mejia doubled and walked. RF Jose Pena had a tough day, 0-4 with three strikeouts. 17. Final: @Huntsville 4, Tennessee 3 Huntsville box scoreThe Stars scored three unearned runs between the 2nd and 3rd innings thanks to two Josh Vitters errors and rode that to victory despite Rob Wooten allowing a run in the 9th. Vitters was the third overall pick in the 2007 draft, and--though I'm sure he's a pleasant enough person--because he was a highly touted Cubs prospect, I always enjoy a bit of schadenfreude when he doesn't play well (he also went 0-4). Wily Peralta started and apparently had the tooth with his pitching ability reinstalled in his mouth because he was again effective: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, 8/1 GO/FO, 94 pitches, 59 strikes. Jim Henderson and his new mid-90s heater allowed a run in 1.2 innings with three strikeouts. Sean Halton, Zelous Wheeler (welcome back, Z!), and Brandon Jones had two hits apiece. Erik Komatsu went 0-3 with a sac fly. Neither Logan Schafer nor Lee Haydel started, though Schafer came in late on defense. 18. Final: @DSL Brewers 5, DSL Athletics 4 DSL Brewers box score After giving up three runs in the 7th to tie it, the Cerveceros got a run in the 8th to provide the winning margin. 19-year-old RHP Joel Dicent, about whom Bruce Seid was moderately excited about after signing last year, had a fine season debut. He went five innings, allowing a run on two hits, a walk, and two hit batters while fanning three. A new name, soon-to-be-18-year-old RHP Jorge Ortega, allowed three runs in two innings, albeit with four strikeouts. 20-year-old Yonki Herandez, who was an infielder last year but a center fielder today, had two hits and was hit twice; he was hit ten times last year in just 224 plate appearances. 21-year-old C/1B Deivi Mejia was also perfect, 2-2 with a walk and a HBP. That's five HBP total between the two clubs, which isn't at all unusual at this level. Last year's promise-filled bonus baby, 18-year-old OF Jose Pena, also had two hits. 16-year-old SS Orlando Arcia, the youngest player in the system, was 0-4 with his second steal. 21. Final: @Kane County 5, Wisconsin 4 (11 innings) Kane County heartbreakChris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GENEVA, IL – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers grabbed a 4-1 lead with three runs in the top of the eleventh inning on Sunday afternoon at Elfstrom Stadium. But, the Kane County Cougars scored four times in the bottom of the eleventh to defeat the Rattlers 5-4. Cheslor Cuthbert put Kane County (23-28) in front in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out bloop single to center that scored Alex Llanos from second base. Wisconsin (27-24) had trouble against Kane County starter Leondy Perez. The right-hander held Wisconsin to one hit through six innings. Yet, the Rattlers managed to tie the game with a run in the sixth inning without the benefit of a hit. Reggie Keen walked to start the sixth. A sacrifice bunt by Nick Shaw moved Keen into scoring position for Cody Hawn and Mike Walker. But the Rattlers' big bats were not needed. Perez whirled and fired an errant pickoff throw to second base before he threw a pitch to Hawn. Keen headed for third as the ball trickled into center. Kane County center fielder Alex Llanos thought he had a play on Keen at third base, but his throw was high. The ball deflected off the glove of Cuthbert at third and wound up in the stands. That allowed Keen to score the tying run. Wisconsin had a great chance to take the lead in the top of the ninth inning as they loaded the bases on three straight one out singles by Chris Dennis, Greg Hopkins, and Robbie Garvey. But, Kane County reliever Chase Boruff got Tony Pechek to ground into an inning-ending double play. Wisconsin appeared to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the tenth inning. Keen was at third and Shaw was at first with one out and Hawn was at the plate. Boruff looked to have missed low and inside on a pitch to Hawn and the ball skipped to the backstop. Keen scored without a play. But, after a discussion between the umpires, it was ruled that Hawn was hit by a pitch. Keen was sent back to third and the run was taken off the board. The Rattlers still had the bases loaded with one out in the tenth, but Walker grounded into an inning ending double play. Wisconsin made no mistake about scoring in the top of the eleventh. Dennis doubled to start the inning. Hopkins bunted Dennis over to third. Garvey lined a single to left. Dennis had to hold up to see if the ball would drop in for a hit. Then, Dennis just beat the throw home. Wisconsin tacked on two more runs in the inning on a double by Pechek and an RBI grounder by Keen. Rattlers closer Greg Holle, who pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the tenth, could not close it out in the bottom of the eleventh. The inning started with a single. Holle got the first out of the inning on a grounder. But, that was it. Lance Adams followed with a single to put runners at first and third. Orlando Calixte doubled to right-center to drive in a pair of runs. Geulin Beltre singled back through the middle to drive in Calixte with the tying run. Brian Garman came on to relieve Holle and gave up a single. A slow roller to short was turned into an out at first but the runners had moved up to second and third. Wisconsin elected to walk Alex Llanos, who had three hits in the game, intentionally to face Jake Kuebler, a .143 hitter on the season. Garman missed low on a 3-2 pitch to force in the winning run. The Timber Rattlers continue their 13-day road trip on Tuesday by starting a series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods in Kentucky. Wisconsin has Brooks Hall (1-0, 4.00) as the scheduled starting pitcher. Bowling Green will counter with CJ Riefenhauser (3-5, 2.92). Game time is 7:05pm from Bowling Green Ballpark. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or www.timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45pm. Wisconsin box scoreMy god, Chris is right when he refers to Elfstrom Stadium as a house of horrors for the Rattlers. What a disastrous series of events. Neither Hawn nor manager Matt Erickson thought the pitch actually hit him, and Chris sounded like he agreed. There was also a weird play on the second batter of the 11th inning. Cuthbert grounded into what sounded like it should have been a 5-4-3 double play, but then the umpires ruled that Shaw was off the bag at second, so the lead runner was safe. Chris indicated that the calls at both bases were bad; it didn't end up mattering really, but either way, suboptimal umpiring. Anyway, kudos to Charly Bashara on a cromulent start, and way to go STOSH!--he struck out four in 3.1 scoreless innings. On the year, Wawrzasek has fanned over 30% of the batters he's faced. Garvey led the Rattlers with three hits, and Dennis and Yadiel Rivera had two each. Cody Hawn drew a walk but is 0-11 since coming off the DL. Runnin' Reggie Keen stole his 22nd base.Wisconsin play-by-play
