  1. Final: Kane County 9, @Wisconsin 5 Rattlers drop series finale to Kane CountyChris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GRAND CHUTE, WI – Ryan Stovall and Alex Llanos homered to pace the Kane County Cougars to a 9-5 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Sunday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field. Keaton Hayenga allowed two runs on five hits over five innings to pick up the win for the Cougars. Both teams are 2-2 after the first four games of the Midwest League season. For the first time in the four game series, Wisconsin scored first. Greg Hopkins doubled with one out. Robbie Garvey followed with an RBI single. Tyler Roberts doubled to right and Garvey scored for a 2-0 Wisconsin lead. Then, Hayenga shut down the Rattlers. He retired the next 11 batters he faced. The lead did not last long. Rattlers starter Del Howell walked Stovall to start the top of the third. Then, Llanos homered to left. One inning later, Angel Franco drew a leadoff walk and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Stovall. In the fifth, Howell walked Yowill Espinal to start the inning. A single and a double play moved Espinal to third with two outs. Howell ended his day when he walked Guelin Beltre – the sixth walk of the game for Howell – to put runners on the corners. Stosh Wawrzasek relieved Howell and was greeted by Franco’s bunt single to send Espinal home with a run to make the score 4-2 in favor of Kane County. The Cougars loaded the bases with no outs against Wawrzasek in the sixth inning. But, a strikeout and a 3-2-3 double play got Wawrzasek out of the inning with no damage. However, there was no escaping the seventh. Murray Watts doubled to start the frame for Kane County. One out later, Franco doubled to right to send Watts home. Franco was out at third trying to stretch the hit into a triple. Wawrzasek got the second out, but issued a walk to the next batter. Tom Keeling was next and he gave up a single to Fernando Cruz and a three-run homer to Stovall. The final Kane County run crossed the plate on an error in the eighth. Wisconsin stopped the streak of consecutive batters retired at 14 when Mike Walker drew a walk to start the seventh against Dusty Odenbach. The Rattlers got back on the scoreboard with three runs in the bottom of the ninth. Cody Hawn doubled against Chas Byrne and would score on a Walker single. One out later Garvey singled. Roberts doubled in two more runs to get the Rattlers to within 9-5 and there was only one out in the inning. Byrne settled down and got the final two outs of the game to secure the split in the series for the Cougars. Wisconsin starts their first road trip of the season on Monday evening with a game against the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Tyler Thornburg makes his Midwest League debut as the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Cedar Rapids has Brian Diemer (2-1, 5.48) as their scheduled starting pitcher. Game time at Perfect Game Field in Cedar Rapids, Iowa is 6:35pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or at www.timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm. Wisconsin box scoreHowell and Keeling in the same game is a recipe for left-handed disaster; they may someday reach their high ceilings, but today was not that day--nine walks between them in seven innings. Wawrzasek, despite being northpawed, wasn't any better, allowing nine baserunners in two innings. Yeesh. Nice game from Tyler Roberts with the two doubles and a runner thrown out; he's started three of the first four games behind the dish for the Rattlers. True to his name, Mike Walker was the only T-Rat to draw a free pass. Carlos George turned in a vintage performance, committing two errors, one each throwing and fielding. Wisconsin play-by-play
  2. Final: @Daytona 7, Brevard County 3 Cubs Win Again behind Perez BombsRobbie Aaron/Daytona Cubs The Daytona Cubs won its third consecutive game Saturday night, defeating the Brevard County Manatees 7-3 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Coming from behind in the first two games of the season, the Cubs got on the board first on Saturday when 1B Justin Bour hit an opposite field solo home run in the second inning during his first at-bat. His first at-bat home run was his second in as many nights. RF Nelson Perez hit the first of his two long-balls in the same frame, lining a fastball from RHP Nick Bucci over the center field wall, extending the Cubs' lead to 3-0 behind 20 year-old RHP Aaron Kurcz. Kurcz retired the first eight Manatees he faced, then surrendered a pair of two-out doubles in the third and fourth innings but escaped unharmed. After striking out Manatees' RF Brock Kjeldgaard looking to start the fifth inning, DH Scott Krieger doubled and 3B Shea Vucinich walked, leading way to leadoff hitter SS Josh Prince who crushed a game-tying three-run home run over the left field fence. Prince hit one home run in all of 2010. Kurcz' night was finished after five innings, but the Cubs plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth putting Kurcz back in line for his first win as a Daytona Cub. Perez led off the sixth with his second home run of the night, a towering shot that landed on the tennis courts over the right field fence, extending the Cubs' lead to 7-3. RHP Dae-Eun Rhee came out of the bullpen for Daytona and pitched himself into trouble in the seventh, loading the bases with nobody out, but managed to work out of trouble with a pair of fly-outs and a strike out. Rhee worked into the ninth inning, but with two outs and a two ball no strike count on Vucinich, he had to be removed from the game because of a blister on his pitching hand. LHP Jeff Beliveau retired Vucinich via a swinging strike out to end the game. Bour, Perez and LF Michael Burgess each have two home runs for the Cubs in 2011. Daytona will travel down to Space Coast Stadium in Brevard County on Sunday to play the final game of the series and look for the four-game series sweep. RHP Adrian Rosario will toe the rubber for the Manatees and his mound-foe will be RHP Brett Wallach who will make his 2011 debut for the Cubs. Brevard County box scoreThe Sea Cows appear to be taking the Brewers' example to heart and are 0-3 to start the year; the fact that all three losses came at the hands of the Cubs makes it even worse. Bucci had a poor High-A debut: 4.2 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, 6/3 GO/FO. I'd congratulate him on least keeping the ball on down, but he also gave up two homers, so...hey, six strikeouts! Santo Manzanillo came in and struck out four in two innings without allowing a walk, though he did give up a run on two hits. As noted, Prince has now matched his 2010 home run total--and I wouldn't be surprised if they're still matched at year's end. Shea Vucinich had another nice game in the nine hole, doubling and drawing two walks. Scooter Gennett remains hitless on the year and also committed an error. Hunter Morris doubles, Khris Davis singled, and Kentrail Davis took the collar. It was Shawn Zarraga's turn in the catching platoon, and he too was 0-4 while allowing the Cubs to steal two bases. Brevard County play-by-playBucci's control deserted him a bit in the 5th, and Gennett's glove didn't help him out: Daytona Bottom of the 5thChad Noble strikes out swinging.Evan Crawford walks. With Logan Watkins batting, Evan Crawford steals (2) 2nd base.Logan Watkins walks.Matthew Cerda reaches on force attempt, throwing error by second baseman Ryan Gennett. 3. Final: @Nashville 8, New Orleans 1 Sounds Quiet Zephyrs Again, Win 8-1Nashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds beat New Orleans Zephyrs, 8-1, in front of 7,151 fans on Saturday night at Greer Stadium, marking the third consecutive game that the Sounds held the Zephyrs to only one run. Nashville continued its pitching dominance for the third straight game, backed by a quality start from starting pitcher Josh Butler. The 26-year-old right-hander tossed six innings of scoreless ball while tying a career high of eight strikeouts for the victory, allowing five hits with two walks. Butler previously fanned eight batters with Advanced-A Brevard County on June 25, 2008 vs. Dunedin. Four of Nashville's six hits went for extra bases, led by catcher Mike Rivera's two-hit, three-RBI performance in his first game playing for the Sounds this season. Nashville did early damage in the opening frame, plating four runs on Zephyrs starter Mark McLemore who began the contest by walking leadoff hitter Edwin Maysonet and then proceeding to hit Brett Carroll to put runners on first and second. Mat Gamel then hit a grounder to New Orleans Mike Cervenak, but the first baseman made a throwing error that led to Maysonet scoring the club's first run. After Brendan Katin walked to load the bases, Chris Nowak hit a sacrifice fly to deep center to score Carroll. In his first at-bat since returning to Nashville, Rivera then smoked a two-run double to the gap in left-center that gave Nashville its final two runs of the frame, bringing home Gamel and Katin. The Sounds tacked on another run in the next inning to go up 5-0. The bases were quickly juiced after McLemore hit Carroll again and walked both Gamel and Nowak. Rivera then earned his third RBI of the contest and chased McLemore from the game after the right-hander hit Rivera, forcing Carroll walk home from third. Nashville got another run in the next frame after Maysonet tripled and scored on a Carroll sacrifice fly off Zephyrs reliever Dustin Richardson. The Sounds' final two runs came in the bottom of the seventh inning. Anderson Machado collected his first hit of the season with a two-run-double down the right field line, scoring Brandon Boggs and Rivera. Machado was tagged out trying to stretch it into a triple. New Orleans' lone run came in the top of the ninth inning off a Clint Sammons home run off reliever Zack Segovia, halting a 8 1/3 inning scoreless streak by the Nashville bullpen. McLemore (0-1) was charged with the loss after walking or hitting nine of his 15 batters faced. The right-hander gave up five runs (four earned) on one hit and six walks in 1 2/3 innings. The Sounds and Zephyrs will play the afternoon finale of a four-game series at 2:05 pm CT on Sunday afternoon at Greer Stadium. Right-handed pitcher Frankie De La Cruz will make his Sounds debut on the mound and face New Orleans righty Tom Koehler. Nashville box scoreGreat start from Butler, who's trying to get back on the Brewers' radar as a viable starting candidate after being booted from the 40-man roster this winter. He allowed five hits, two walks, and a hit batter (Vinny Rottino; sorry, Vinny), posted an even 4/4 GO/FO, and threw 54 strikes in 88 pitches. Brandon Kintzler fanned two in a perfect 8th inning. You can listen to Rivera's two-run double here; he had a perfect night, collecting a walk to go along with the two hits and HBP. How about McLemore hitting three batters, including Brett Carroll twice? Gamel singled in addition to his walk and also stole a base. Nashville play-by-playNice job by Katin here to short-circuit a potential rally: New Orleans Top of the 3rdOsvaldo Martinez strikes out swinging, catcher Mike Rivera to first baseman Mat Gamel.Ruben Gotay singles on a line drive to left fielder Brandon Boggs.Vinny Rottino singles on a line drive to right fielder Brendan Katin. 4. Final: Huntsville 9, @Jacksonville 2 Strong Offense Gives Stars WinHuntsville Stars Jacksonville, FL – Every player in the Stars starting lineup recorded a hit in Saturday’s game against Jacksonville, including pitcher Jesus Sanchez. The strong offense led the Stars to their second victory of the year, a 9-2 final over the Suns. Left fielder Brandon Jones started the offensive barrage with his first of three doubles in the second inning. Center fielder Chuckie Caufield followed up with a double of his own to bring home Jones. Another double by second baseman Sergio Miranda resulted in a run for the Stars in the third. Jones hit his second double to lead off the fourth and advanced to third on a passed ball by Suns catcher Kyle Skipworth. Caufield drove in Jones for his second RBI game. Catcher Jonathan Lucroy followed up with a single to bring home Caufield, giving the Stars four unanswered runs. The Suns’ Skipworth belted a two-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth off of Stars starter Sanchez to close the Huntsville lead to two. Sanchez, who had a quality start, added to his pitching performance with an RBI single at the plate in the fifth. The Stars kept their bats awake in the sixth, added four more runs with the help of a two-run dinger from right fielder Steffan Wilson. Neither the Stars nor the Suns would score again in the 9-2 final. Pitcher Sanchez picked up his first win, going 6.0 innings and giving up just two runs on two hits. He walked two and struck out three. Relievers Robert Hinton and Roque Mercedes combined to close out the game, allowing just two hits over 3.0 innings. Suns starter Brad Hand went just 4.0 innings, giving up four runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out four. Reliever Jeffery Allison gave up the bulk of the runs, 5, in just 1.1 innings of work. The Stars and Suns face off again tomorrow for game four of the five-game series. Stars righty, and the Brewers’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year, Cody Scarpetta will take the mound against right-hander Joey O’Gara. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 CST. Huntsville box scoreSolid, if less than dominant, Brewers (and AA) debut for Jesus Sanchez. He threw 85 pitches, 48 for strikes, and posted a 6/4 GO/FO. Brandon Jones got his Prince Fielder on. Miranda also had three hits, and Lucroy, who was only supposed to play seven innings but finished the game, was on three times as well with a hit and two walks. Taylor Green was 1-3 with a HBP and sac fly. Matt Cline started at shortstop for the second game in a row after seeing action there just four times last year. Huntsville play-by-playLike Fielder, Jones doubled to both right and left field. The full four-run 6th, including some dubious defense by the Suns during Lucroy's at-bat. 6. Ben Badler looked at this recently, and his data agrees with your intuition regarding the paucity of significant Brewers international signings.
  7. RHP Robert Hinton (finally) goes to Huntsville, with LHP Dan Meadows going from Huntsville to Brevard County. No word yet on whose spot Meadows takes on the Manatees' roster.
  8. Haudricourt: "[Jonathan] Lucroy is scheduled to play seven innings for Class AA Huntsville today, then nine innings on Sunday and Monday before being re-evaluated."
  9. Final: @Wisconsin 4, Kane County 3 Rattlers rally, then hold off Kane County Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GRAND CHUTE, WI – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers trailed the Kane County Cougars 1-0 after the seventh inning stretch on Saturday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field. The home team scored twice in the seventh and twice in the eighth thanks to some defensive miscues by the Cougars. Then, Brian Garman held off Kane County in the ninth to secure a 4-3 win for Wisconsin. Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Manny Parra pitched two perfect innings and struck out four on a rehabilitation assignment and picked up the win for the Rattlers. The two starting pitchers found different ways to keep the game scoreless through five innings. Wisconsin’s Jimmy Nelson allowed the leadoff batter to reach in four of the first five innings he pitched. Nelson worked around three walks, an error, and three hits over the first five, but got help on two caught stealing, a pair of double plays and four strikeouts. Leondy Perez also allowed three hits in the first five frames, but did not walk a batter and struck out two. He got help when Mike Walker was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first on a two out double by Tyler Roberts in the bottom of the second. Kane County broke through first with a run in the top of the sixth. Alex Llanos singled to lead off the inning. A sacrifice bunt and a flyout to right sent Llanos to third. Murray Watts came through with a two out single to left to score Llanos for a 1-0 Kane County lead. Wisconsin got to Perez in the seventh inning with a pair of runs on one hit. Cody Hawn started the inning with a line drive to short that was ruled a trap. Perez issued his first walk of the game when he issued a four pitch free pass to Jason Rogers, the next batter of the inning. Walker followed and dropped a sacrifice bunt up the third base line. Perez fired wildly to first. That allowed Hawn to score the tying run, Rogers to take third, and Walker to move to second. Perez got the next two outs. Then, the Cougars decided to walk TJ Mittelstaedt intentionally. Franklin Romero was next and his grounder to third was booted to allow Rogers to score the go ahead run. Wisconsin tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning off Kane County reliever Nick Wooley. Reggie Keen singled, went to second on a wild pitch, took third on a grounder to the right side, and scored on another wild pitch. Rogers tripled on the next pitch. Greg Hopkins sent Rogers home with a single for a 4-1 Wisconsin lead. Parra pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth for the Rattlers. He struck out four and retired all six batters he faced to put himself in line for the win. Brian Garman, who recorded nine saves for the Helena Brewers in the Pioneer League in 2010, came on to close out the Cougars. He gave up a triple to Brian Fletcher to start the innings. Garman struck out the next two batters, but allowed an RBI double to Angel Franco and an RBI single to Ryan Jenkins. Garman closed out Kane County by striking out the final batter of the game for the 4-3 Rattlers win. The final game of the series between Wisconsin and Kane County is Sunday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field. Del Howell is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Keaton Hayenga is set to start for the Cougars. Game time is 1:05pm Sunday is the first Brewers Sunday of the 2011 season. The Rattlers will wear uniforms based on the jerseys worn by the 1975 Milwaukee Brewers during the game. The players will be available for fans in an autograph session after the game. The first 1,000 fans in attendance on Sunday afternoon receive a poster of Timber Rattlers manager Matt Erickson courtesy of DiGiornio’s Pizza. If you can’t make it to the game, tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or www.timberrattlers.com. http://wisconsin.timberrattlers.milb.com/images/2011/04/09/ZevZFMqr.jpg Brian Garman strikes out Fernando Cruz for the final out of Wisconsin's 4-3 win over Kane County on Saturday afternoon. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers) Wisconsin box score Reggie Keen, baserunning hero? Seven of the nine Rattlers had exactly one hit, the exceptions being Romero and Nick Shaw. This was just Shaw's 7th career game at shortstop, compared to 48 at second base. Roberts, in addition to his double, drew a walk and threw out two runners stealing but also committed a passed ball, his nemesis last year at Maryvale. Nelson's final line: 6 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 9/2 GO/AO. He threw 81 pitches, 47 for strikes, though Mehring said he was stretched out to an upper limit of 90 already. Parra was on his game, throwing only four balls in 22 pitches and hitting 94. Wisconsin play-by-play As mentioned above, Roberts' CS came in the same inning. Mehring was impressed. Kane County Top of the 3rd Fernando Cruz walks. Gerard Hall called out on strikes. With Alex Llanos batting, Fernando Cruz caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Tyler Roberts to second baseman Gregory Hopkins. Alex Llanos walks. 12. Final: Kane County 7, @Wisconsin 6 Kane County edges WisconsinChris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GRAND CHUTE, WI - Two big innings were enough for the Kane County Cougars to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 7-6 Friday night at Time Warner Cable Field. Kane County scored three times in the second and four times in the fifth to build a 7-2 lead. Three Cougars relievers allowed one run over five innings to hold off the Rattlers. Both teams are at 1-1 on the young season. A misplay on a potential inning ending double play led to three Kane County runs in the second inning. The Cougars had runners at first and second with one out and Travis Jones sent a grounder to third. The throw to second got the force out, but the throw to first was wild to allow the first run of the game to score. Rattlers starting pitcher Matt Miller walked the next batter and Alex Llanos followed with a two-run double and the Cougars were up 3-0. Wisconsin responded in the bottom of the third inning. Reggie Keen homered to left with two outs and Nick Shaw on base. Keen's first homer of the year pulled Wisconsin to with a run. The scored remained 3-2 until the top of the fifth inning. Llanos tripled to start the inning. Then, Miller walked Angel Franco. The walk ended Miller's night. Rattlers reliever Charly Bashara was greeted with an RBI single by Brett Eibner and a two run double by Brian Fletcher. Geulin Beltre capped the four run inning with an RBI single. Miller's line in his Timber Rattlers debut was four innings, four hits, five runs, five walks, and three strikeouts. He would be charged with the loss. But, the Rattlers offense made the game interesting. The comeback attempt started in the bottom of the fifth as the team loaded the bases with no outs. TJ Mittelstaedt drew a walk, Carlos George singled, and Shaw walked again. That chased Kane County starting pitcher Sugar Ray Marimon from the game. Cougars reliever Matt Mitchell got the first out of the inning with a strikeout, but Cody Hawn singled through the right side of the infield to knock in a pair of runs. Mike Walker was next and he singled in one run to make the score 7-5. A single by Greg Hopkins loaded the bases again for the Rattlers. But, Mitchell got out of the inning with no more damage by getting a strikeout and a groundout. Keen was a one man rally in the bottom of the seventh. He singled and stole second to get into scoring position. Keen would also steal third and score on a wild throw by Jones, the Kane County catcher. That got Wisconsin to within a run. Hopkins would single with two outs in the seventh. Robbie Garvey sent a sinking line drive to shallow left-center that looked like it might drop in for a hit to extend the inning. But, Eibner charged in from centerfield to make a diving catch and end the inning. The Rattlers did get the tying run into scoring position in the eighth inning after Mittelstaedt singled and stole second. But, Wisconsin could not get the tying run across the plate. Wisconsin did steal five bases in the game. Keen had three and Mittelstaedt had two. In the first two games of the season, the Rattlers have stolen seven bases in eight attempts. Game three of the series between Wisconsin and Kane County is Saturday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field. The Rattlers will send Jimmy Nelson to the mound as their scheduled starting pitcher. The Cougars will counter with Leondy Perez. Game time is 1:05pm. Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Manny Parra is scheduled to pitch in relief for the Rattlers on Saturday afternoon. He is scheduled to be on about a 25 pitch limit. Tickets are available at the Time Warne Cable Field Box Office or by calling (800) WI-TIMBER. If you can't make it out to the game, you may tune in for the broadcast on AM1280WNAM or on www.timberrattlers.com beginning with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 12:45pm. Wisconsin box scoreTough full-season debut for Miller, as his control regressed from its unexpectedly good 2010 level. Eric Marzec?was impressive in relief, fanning four in three scoreless, hitless innings, allowing just a walk. How about that Reggie Keen? Three hits for the second straight night for the NDFA outfielder, including his second pro homer, plus three steals! Speaking of which, the stolen bases for the team are nice in both quantity and rate, but the Rattlers were also picked off twice (Shaw and Mittelstaedt). I guess you get more chances to get picked off when you're on base a lot, and Shaw and Mittelstaedt were both on three times, Shaw with three bases on balls and Mittelstaedt with two singles and a free pass. Walker and Hopkins also had two hits. Cameron Garfield?had a quiet 2011 debut, 0-4 with a passed ball, though he did throw out both attempted base stealers. Wisconsin play-by-play
  13. Final: @Daytona 7, Brevard County 3 Cubs Improve to 2-0 With 7-3 WinChad Seely/Daytona Cubs Powered by a five-run first inning, the Daytona Cubs improved to 2-0 on the season with a 7-3 victory over the Brevard County Manatees. The Manatees struck first for the second consecutive night, but like on Thursday, the Cubs over-took the lead. Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning, Cubs 1B Justin Bour put the Cubs on the board in a big way with a booming three-run blast to straight away centerfield to put Daytona ahead for good. It was Boar's first home run of the season. Welington Castillo followed suit with an opposite field double and was plated when Michael Burgess hit his second home run in as many night to expand the Cubs' lead to 5-1. It stayed that way until the fifth inning when both teams each pushed across a run. Manatees' LF Khris Davis brought Brevard County within three in the top half of the sixth when he belted a solo home run off reliever RHP Kevin Rhoderick. The Cubs tacked on a run late as Evan Crawford scored on a two-out RBI single by CF Jae-Hoon Ha. Strong pitching was once again the case for Buddy Bailey's club, as starter RHP Nick Struck went five solid innings, allowing two runs (one earned) and striking out five. Rhoderick led the charge out of the bullpen in his professional baseball debut and was perfect in his two innings of work, aside from the home run by Davis. RHP Jordan Latham and RHP Nick Searle followed and threw back-to-back scoreless frames in the 8th and 9th innings to shut down the Manatees. The Cubs and Mantees will play game three of the four game set tomorrow night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark with first pitch scheduled for 7:05PM. RHP Aaron Kurcz will make his 2011 debut for the Cubs and will face RHP Nick Bucci. Brevard County box scoreEvan Anundsen was shelled in his first game back, allowing five runs on five hits and a walk in just one inning of work. He surrendered two homers and failed to record a strikeout. A rehabbing LaTroy Hawkins worked two easy innings. Khris Davis singled to go with his homer, Hunter Morris again had two hits, and Shea Vucinich doubled twice. Kentrail Davis doubled and was hit by a pitch (not again). Scooter Gennett was hitless with two strikeouts and remains 0-for-BC. Chris Dennis is still on the schneid as well, though he did draw a walk, but he also whiffed three times. In the less-publicized catching-prospect platoon, Rafael Neda took over for game one starter Shawn Zarraga and was 0-3 with a HBP while allowing three stolen bases. Vucinich committed his second error in as many games. 14. Final: @Jacksonville 5, Huntsville 4 Suns Walk-Off a Winner over Stars 5-4Jacksonville Suns JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- Chris Gutierrez hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to secure the first victory of the season for the Jacksonville Suns (1-1) over the Huntsville Stars (1-1) with a 5-4 win in front of 7,142 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville on Friday night. With no one out and two runners on in the bottom of the ninth, Gutierrez sneaked a ground-ball single past a drawn-in infield into left center field to score Erik Lis from second for the winning run. Peter Andrelczyk (1-0) took the victory for the Suns by pitching scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth. Roque Mercedes (0-1) took the loss for Huntsville after failing to retire a batter and giving up the game-winning run. Jacksonville jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first three innings. Jorge Padilla hit the first Suns homer of the season in the bottom of the first, a two-run shot that put Jacksonville up 2-0. The Stars cut the deficit to 2-1 with a run in the second, but the Suns responded with two runs in the third thanks to back-to-back RBI base hits by Ryan Curry and Padilla. Huntsville starter Dan Merklinger lasted four innings, giving up four runs on seven hits in his first start of 2011. In Suns starter Omar Poveda’s final inning in the top of the fifth, the Stars added two runs off the bat of catcher Jonathan Lucroy’s double to cut the lead to 4-3. Poveda finished the game giving up three runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts in his first start since 2009 after missing the 2010 season recovering from “Tommy John” surgery. He took a no decision in five innings on the mound. The Stars tied the game in the top of the sixth inning, as Matt Cline drove in Sean Halton on a single to left off Jacksonville reliever Garrett Parcell. Jhan Marinez, a member of the Florida Marlins’ 40-man roster, made his first relief appearance of the season, pitching a perfect seventh inning with a strikeout. Padilla’s three-RBI night led Jacksonville at the plate, but the Suns also saw multi-hit games from Kevin Mattison and Ben Lasater. After striking out three times in Thursday’s game, Laster recorded two doubles for the Suns on Friday. The clubs will play the third game of the series on Saturday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonvillle. Left-hander Brad Hand will pitch for the Suns against Huntsville’s right-hander Jesus Sanchez. Huntsville box scoreNot a great game for recently DFA'd pitchers, as both Merklinger and Mercedes struggled, though it's easy to forget it was just Merklinger's third start above the High-A level. He struck out three and walked two, throwing 47 of his 70 pitches for strikes. Dan Meadows struck out two but also walked two in a scoreless inning. Darren Byrd, who may be a bit of a middle relief sleeper, fanned four in two innings, allowing just one hit and no walks. Cline, Halton, and Steffan Wilson each had two hits, as did Lee Haydel, who also walked. Taylor Green was 1-4. This is the second night in a row the Stars have faced a Suns pitcher coming off Tommy John surgery. 15. Final: @Nashville 7, New Orleans 1 Sounds Take Down Z's For 2nd Straight NightNashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds received another solid effort from their pitching staff to go along with an Eric Farris three-run homer in posting a 7-1 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs on Friday evening at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Mark Rogers, the top-rated prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers' farm system, made his first start of the year and took a no-decision. The 25-year-old allowed one run on four hits over 4 2/3 innings of work. He walked five batters and struck out five in his 95-pitch effort, finishing one out shy of his first career Triple-A win. The Sounds' bullpen continued their strong start to the 2011 campaign as three hurlers followed Rogers by combining for 4 1/3 scoreless frames to close out the contest. The Nashville relief corps has surrendered just three hits over 6 1/3 innings this season. Tim Dillard (1-0) earned the win for the Sounds after working 2 1/3 hitless innings and fanning two batters. Justin James added a scoreless frame before Mark DiFelice made his first Sounds appearance since 2008 and closed out the game with a spotless ninth. New Orleans opened the evening's scoring with their lone run of the night when catcher Brad Davis lifted a sacrifice fly to center off Rogers to plate Joe Thurston in the top of the second inning. The Sounds rallied to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame without the benefit of a hit. Brendan Katin was hit by a West pitch to open the inning. After a Zelous Wheeler flyout, Brandon Boggs hit a comebacker to the mound and West misfired over the head of first baseman Josh Kroeger, which allowed Katin to score the tying run as Boggs raced all the way to third on the play. With Martin Maldonado at the plate, West threw a wild pitch that allowed Boggs to scamper home to give the home team a 2-1 advantage. Both runs in the frame were unearned against West. Nashville blew the game wide open in the fourth, plating five runs against West to extend the lead to 7-1. Katin led off with a line-drive double to left. After Wheeler drew a walk, Boggs dropped a bunt single to the left side of the mound to load the bases for Maldonado, who ripped an RBI single to right to plate Katin. Wheeler also attempted to score on the play but was thrown out at the dish by Mathews, the Z's right fielder. Two batters later, Rogers helped his own cause with a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Boggs. Farris continued his strong start to the season when he capped off the scoring barrage with a three-run homer to left. The infielder's first big fly of the season chased West from the contest and closed out the night's scoring, as neither team plated a run over the final five frames of action. West (0-1) took the loss for New Orleans after giving up seven runs (five earned) on six hits over just 3 2/3 frames of action. The teams continue the series with a 6:35 p.m. contest on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Josh Butler makes his first start of the year for Nashville. He'll face Z's southpaw Mark McLemore. The Sounds' first fireworks show of the year will follow the on-field action. Nashville box scoreYou can listen to Farris's three-run blast here. More of the same for Rogers in terms of (in)efficiency; only 51 of his 95 pitches went for strikes. He did get six groundouts against just two flyouts. It's nice to see Rogers on the mound, but it's even nicer to see DiFelice's name back in a box score; welcome back, Mark, and can I get a haircut? James' Brewers debut was uneventful. Wheeler walked three times and committed his second error in as many days. Farris also committed an error. Mat Gamel again started at first and was 0-4. Caleb Gindl was 0-1 before leaving the game. Not only did Rogers have a sac fly, but he also singled in his other trip. Nashville play-by-playWhat happened to Gindl? 16. Brad Krause is back with his typically excellent recap of Opening Day for the Rattlers. I hope the radar gun gets fixed soon, though it was inaccurate even when it was on last year.
  17. Robert Hinton was originally listed in the Stars' game notes for today, but an updated version without him was sent out, so he must have been sent elsewhere. As for Chase Wright, he's apparently taking Erik Komatsu's spot; Komatsu isn't listed on the roster. Both Hinton and Komatsu still appear on the Stars' MiLB.com roster; we're trying to figure out where they really are. EDIT: Komatsu is on Helena's roster. He's obviously got some sort of injury. Hope it's not serious.
  18. They Brewers do have one player who's quite soft, but it's not Hart.
  19. Here's a link to the actual mp3. I've also got it saved in case that gets taken down.
  20. Chris Mehring notes that the T-Rats were really happy for Nick Shaw's first pro homer.
  21. Final: Daytona 3, @Brevard County 2 Manatees fall 3-2 in season openerFrank Longobardo/Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla -- The Brevard County Manatees dropped its season opener, 3-2 to the Daytona Cubs, in front of a crowd of 4,777 at Space Coast Stadium on Thursday night. Manatees starting pitcher Kyle Heckathorn went five innings and allowed one run on six hits while striking out four, but did not factor into the decision as Brevard County couldn't hold on to a 2-0 lead. Brevard County's first run of the season came in the second, as Brock Kjeldgaard drove in Hunter Morris with a RBI single. Morris led the inning off with a triple and was 2-for-4 with two of the Manatees three extra-base hits on the evening. The Manatees scored again in the fourth on a RBI groundout from Khris Davis that scored Kentrail Davis. Heckathorn would give up his only run of the night in the fifth as Daytona's Michael Burgess led off the inning with a solo shot to right on a 1-2 pitch. Brevard County had a great opportunity to increase its lead in the sixth as the Manatees had the bases loaded with no outs. Nothing would come from it though as Kentrail Davis struck out and Kjeldgaard grounded into a seldom seen 3-2-3 double play. The Cubs would do all the damage they would need to do the very next inning as Efrain Nieves relieved Mark Willinsky with two outs and runners at first and second, and Matthew Cerda took the first pitch he saw and drilled it down the right field line for a two-run double as Daytona took a 3-2 lead. Brevard County could only muster just one baserunner the rest of the way as they fell to their rivals from the north. The Manatees were just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left 15 men on base. Brevard County will now travel to Daytona for the next two games of the four-game set. On Friday night, Evan Anundsen will take the mound for the Manatees, while the Cubs will counter with Nicholas Struck. http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/images/2011/04/07/wuyQW3zl.jpg Kyle Heckathorn (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) Brevard County box scoreHeckathorn's career in a microcosm: "solid". He posted a 4/4 GO/AO tonight. Rob Wooten made a triumphant return from Tommy John surgery, fanning four of the six hitters he faced. He blew away the Florida State League for BC in 2009 before getting a midseason bump to Huntsville, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him move up soon if he proves he's healthy. Jon Pokorny got one out and gave up one hit in his High-A debut. Taking his second try at the FSL, Kentrail Davis singled and doubled in four trips; taking his first, Scooter Gennett was 0-3 with a sac bunt. Great start for Morris with the double and triple. Khris Davis, Chris Dennis, and Shawn Zarraga all went hitless; Dennis struck out twice. Zarraga threw out just 28% of runners last year and 23% for his career, but he nailed the only attempted base thief tonight. Kjeldgaard must have been trying to top Casey McGehee's 7th-inning at-bat for "worst Brewers double play of the day". Brevard County play-by-playSounds like Dennis at least hit one ball hard, unless Kjeldgaard had a sneezing fit or something: Brevard County Bottom of the 2ndHunter Morris triples (1) on a fly ball to left fielder Michael Burgess.Khristopher Davis grounds out, pitcher Robert Whitenack to first baseman Justin Bour.Brock Kjeldgaard singles on a ground ball to left fielder Michael Burgess, deflected by third baseman Matthew Cerda. 22. Final: Huntsville 4, @Jacksonville 1 Suns Drop Season Opener 4-1Jacksonville Suns JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- The Jacksonville Suns opened the 2011 season with a 4-1 loss to the Huntsville Stars in front of 7,366 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville on Thursday night. Suns starter Dallas Trahern allowed three runs to the Stars in the top of the first to stake Huntsville to an early lead, but Trahern was locked in for the rest of his five innings on the mound as he made his first start since May 8, 2009. Trahern missed the majority of the 2009 season with an elbow injury, and missed all of 2010 recovering from “Tommy John” surgery. Trahern took the loss as he gave up three runs on four hits while walking three batters and striking out two. Huntsville starter Wily Peralta threw six strong innings to earn the victory for the Stars. Peralta carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the sixth inning, and finished the game giving up one run on one hit with a pair of walks and six strikeouts. Stars catcher Jonathan Lucroy, with Huntsville on a major league rehab assignment from the Milwaukee Brewers, finished the game 0-2 at the plate with two walks and run scored. The Stars posted three runs on the scoreboard off Trahern in the top of the first. Taylor Green brought in two runs on his double to left center field, and he scored the third run for the Stars as first baseman Sean Halton brought him in on an RBI double to left center field. The Stars held their three-run lead into the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Jacksonville centerfielder Kevin Mattison broke up Peralta’s no-hitter with a standup triple to the gap in right-centerfield. Shortstop Chris Gutierrez drove in Mattison for Jacksonville’s first run of the night with a sacrifice fly to center. A ground-rule RBI double for Halton in the top of the eighth increased the Huntsville advantage to 4-1, which would be the final score. Stars reliever Michael Fiers pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth to earn his first save of the season. 2010 Southern League Championship Series hero Chris Hatcher, who hit a walkoff homer in the bottom of the ninth to clinch Jacksonville’s second straight Southern League crown made his relief debut, pitching a perfect top of the seventh inning. Hatcher is attempting to be the first major league catcher to return to the big leagues as a pitcher, as he made the switch from behind the plate to the mound this past offseason. The clubs will play the second game of the series on Friday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonvillle. Right-hander Omar Poveda will pitch for the Suns against Stars southpaw Dan Merklinger. Huntsville box scoreCan Peralta miss bats and induce grounders at the same time? Maybe not--he struck out six, but his GO/AO was just 3/6; personally, I'll take the strikeouts. I guess if Fiers isn't going to start and isn't going to pitch for Nashville, he might as well close for Huntsville. Lucroy played the whole game at catcher. Great AA debut for Halton, who added a single to go with his two doubles. Green also singled in addition to his two-bagger. I picked Lee Haydel for a mini-breakout this year given his steady incremental improvement over the years, but he got off to a bad start while repeating a level for the first time, going 0-5 in the leadoff spot. It's nice to see him get a chance to play center field though, at least until Logan Schafer gets healthy. 23. Final: @Nashville 5, New Orleans 1 Sounds Win 5-1 On Opening NightNashville Sounds Nashville, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds opened the 2011 season with a 5-1 win over the visiting New Orleans Zephyrs on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium in front of 7,144 people on Opening Night. Newcomers Brandon Boggs and Edwin Maysonet each homered in their Sounds debuts, while starter Amaury Rivas (1-0) picked up the win while tossing a quality start in his first Triple-A outing, a speedy 77-pitch effort. After allowing a leadoff double to Zephyrs prospect Ozzie Martinez, Rivas settled down to retire the next 14 consecutive batters, surrendering just three total hits over his seven innings pitched on Opening Night. The Sounds banged out a total of 13 hits on the night, with five players each producing multiple-hit efforts. Eris Farris went 3-for-5 with a double and run scored, while Mat Gamel and Zelous Wheeler each recorded two hits. After the Zephyrs scored in the top of the first, the Sounds squared up the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning. Farris singled up the middle to centerfield, stole second base, and was brought home after Gamel laced a two-out RBI-single to right field. Nashville would score the final four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull ahead 5-1. After Brett Carroll singled, Wheeler bunted up the third base line to reach base. Boggs then tattooed his first homer of the season over the right field wall after bunting foul twice earlier in the at-bat. Maysonet then followed with solo shot to left later in the inning. Reliever Mike McClendon fanned two while tossing two scoreless frames to end the contest for Nashville. Elih Villanueva (0-1) took the loss after giving up four runs on 10 hits over five innings for the Zephyrs. The Sounds and Zephyrs continue with the second-game of a four-game series at 7:05 pm on Friday evening at Greer Stadium. Brewers top prospect and right-handed starter Mark Rogers will make his season-debut for the Sounds against New Orleans left-hander Sean West. Nashville box scoreYou can listen to Boggs' homer here. Rivas struck out only two, but he didn't issue any walks and posted an 11/6 GO/AO. 53 of his 77 pitches went for strikes. Gamel walked to go along with his two hits, one of which was a double. Boggs also singled and walked. Making his AAA debut, Caleb Gindl started in center field and was a quiet 1-4 with a strikeout and caught-stealing. Wheeler committed a throwing error.
