  1. Just so people know, I'm getting some nice responses from the coaches of our DFEs. I hope to have most to all of them in by the end of the weekend so I can get the story out next week. Luke Cannon is off to an incredibly hot start. In 40 ABs so far he has 5 homers & 4 doubles. He's hitting .375 overall with a .490 OBP. I think he's trying to prove that his freshmen season was not a fluke. I'm going to boldly predict that Mr. Cannon (no, not Geoff Jenkins) will be one of Helena's starting corner OFs (opposite Adam Mannon) come June. Actually, that Helena OF could be fairly exciting if Fermaint is patrolling CF.
  2. Can't wait for the story, huh http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ? Rivera went to Brookdale CC, but has since withdrawn from school. The Brewers are still interested in signing him, but are going to wait to do so until after the JC season and handle him like the rest of their DFE candidates. Theodorakos is currently pitching intrasquad games, and his HC Steve Smith hopes to get him into real game situations soon. He's throwing at about 80% right now.
  3. I just thought I'd bring it up so you didn't make printer friendly pages AND the media guide. You know, the whole 2 birds 1 stone thing http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .
  4. Wasn't that what the bf.net media guide was for?
  5. I saw that too, and I'm 99.9% certain that's for the school year starting in 2004, meaning this coming September.
  6. The odds of a 5th round pick in baseballs draft making the majors is very low. You had me up until this point X. While I agree that 5th rounders are a longshot to make it to the bigs, I don't think that played a part in his decision. "Nah, I'm not going to sign, 5th rounders never make it..." And molitor fan, I'm not sure of the percentage, I know BA has done some studies, but your figures look like pretty good guesstimations to me. If I remember & muster up the ambition I'll try to look for BA's study on this from sometime last spring.
  7. That happens to be my next story, hopefully to be out within a couple of weeks. I do have the updated list of who the candidates are: 13. (round they were drafted in last June) Luke Cannon-OF 15. Joel Rivera-OF 25. Jared Theodorakos-LHP 26. Hasan Rasheed-OF 31. Sheldon Catchot-LHP 33. Chad Miller-1B 37. Justin Wilson-LHP 39. Wesley Yeary-RHP 40. Robert Hinton-RHP 41. Peter Baubles--C 44. Rayner Robles-Encarnacion-IF 45. Tim Grubbs-RHP 46. Clay Blevins-C 48. Calvin Thompson-OF 49. Michael Sarka-RHP
  8. A few weeks ago I questioned the hiring of Paul DePodesta by the Dodgers wondering if it would hurt the Dodgers & their recent scouting/drafting efforts. A nice story on BA by Jim Callis has answered most of my questions, and I'm happy to hear that both men, DePod & White, are welcoming the challenge. There are also some interesting blurbs about the Moneyball draft, which really wasn't all that cost-efficient, vs. the Dodgers' efforts the past couple of years, in which they have landed a few pricey draft picks in later rounds: www.baseballamerica.com/t...allis.html
  9. Yeah Brian, it's as easy as that. What are you waiting for?
  10. I don't know what you expect out of a AAA team talent-wise, but it's going to be the first time in years that we'll actually have a few prospects at the AAA level. As MassBrew has pointed out, this year we'll have a bigger reason & likely a stronger group following the Indianapolis portion of his Daily Link Report. I personally think it's a good mix of prospects (possibly Hardy, Hart, Krynzel, Martinez, Hendrickson, de la Rosa, possibly Jones), marginal prospects (Childers, Adams, Gemoll, Hernandez, Shelley, Bruso, Housman), and a few guys that could contribute at the big league level (Nunnally, Magruder, Liefer, Erickson, Johnson). I actually like this team better than the one that won the AAA World Series a few years back, and I wouldn't be surprised to see this team atop the leaderboard deep in the season. As far as the team "gelling" if the talent is there they'll do well. And as far as I've heard, AAA clubhouses are about as divided as they can get, so I'm not so sure how much "gelling" can actually be accomplished, no matter how much time they have together in spring training.
  11. Talk about good roster management from Doug Melvin. I have no problem with him stockpiling players, even if it does create a perceived logjam at one or more positions. The young guys are going to continue to get their ABs, and all of the veteran players have at least a decent shot to win a spot with the big league club, if not out of spring training then during the season at some point.
  12. I think everyone is in agreement that what would push this site over 1000 posters, is more cowbell. Love that cowbell skit, probably the best SNL skit in the last 10-15 years (from what I've seen). So Kat, as always, thanks for the good laugh (set up by pogo). Nice job to both Brian & Michael. While we have had more recognition on the radio, it's nice to get some in print. The MJS would be nice, although you have to believe they (Olson & Haudricourt) know how we feel about them. And at some point you would think that Baseball America would do a feature on fan-based websites.
  13. I see no point in awarding people for their good thoughts. If you like a certain post you can always assign the thread some stars if you like. Or just reply and/or private message the person & tell them how much you liked their post(s). TeamOneBaseball used to have a post or thought of the week feature on their homepage and it was just hokey. And I want to part in the selection process.
  14. Doug Melvin responded to my email asking about the possible draft pick compensation for both Eddie Perez & John Vander Wal: We do not think we receive draft choices because both players have filed twice as free agents. It is in question with the Commissioners office because they were listed as comp picks on the memo we received. As I noted within the edited intial thread, I think this is another instance that proves just how serious people take the draft. That said, I don't think anyone around here would mind if the Commissioners office screws this one up... Also, look out for the Yankees come June, they're loading up on picks. While they lost their own first rounder to the Dodgers for signing Paul Quantrill, they have gained the Astros first rounder for Pettite, their 2nd rounder for Clemens, the Padres 2nd rounder for Wells & 3 sandwich picks. For their ailing system that probably will provide a huge boost to put their usually strong farm system back on the map. This is another reason why the compensation process needs to be fixed. They sign Quantrill & Sheffield yet they gain 5 early picks. I've said before that MLB should adopt a compensation system similar to the NFL in which they weigh players lost vs. those gained. All in all, quite a few sandwich picks after round one.
  15. It's a legitimate gripe rluzinski. There really haven't been as many fresh articles on the homepage as what there used to be. Of course, it's easier to notice at this time of year, but even during the summer months a few stories lingered on longer than they should have. And everyone is welcome to submit a story, that is part of the original intent of this site. I'm sure several people will be anxious to come up with a season preview story. I do have a few stories of my own that will likely be coming out towards the end of this month & the end of February. Try & guess what those will entail...http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .
  16. I think we established last year that any & all fantasy interests can easily be talked about in the off-topic forum.
  17. In the event of a tie, the team with the worse record from the year before is awarded the higher pick.
  18. I guess I'm curious to learn which specific threads you are talking about. The only ones that I see as repetetive are the ones talking about individual free agents signing with other teams, especially since JaNelson went through the trouble to put the offseason transaction thread together. However, I noticed you contributed to one of those threads with the Juan Gonzalez signing. I'm certainly not trying to call you out on that, since they really don't bug me that much, especially since there isn't much news these days to talk about.
  19. As much as I poke fun at turning down that kind of money, I really can never get down on a kid for choosing college over cash. Far too often we see it happening the other way around, to much greater extremes. While a California education may not come close to $750,000 penny for penny, a college education while also being able to play on both the football & baseball teams of a respected D1 program truly is priceless.
  20. IIRC I don't think Page got much playing time at UCLA last spring. I remember reading the season preview for last year's Bruins' team and he had a chance to win the team's starting SS job, but obviously didn't. I'm sure they expect bigger & brighter things out of him this coming season. I didn't see the bowl game the other night, but I watched a couple of UCLA football games just to watch him play, as the local Fox Sports channel seemed to show 5-6 of their games this season. I must say from what I saw of him I wasn't impressed. He just didn't seem to play with much desire, almost like he didn't want to get overly physical, and as a safety that's hard to play without. He's one heck of an athlete, so hopefully for his own sake he has a breakthrough season on the baseball diamond. I wish I was in a position to turn down $750,000 http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .
  21. You know, Joel is a #1, and Jorge is a #3...um, yeah. I'm not so sure that Hanrahan is a #1 pitching prospect. I think most of the love for Joel around these parts has to do with hype & name recognition. Plus, most scouting publications seem to think Hanrahan is a #3 starting pitcher as well. I'd probably put Hanrahan ahead of de la Rosa as well, but I don't think it's that big of a stretch. Hard throwing lefties are always going to get some big bonus points.
  22. Kevin Millwood has accepted arbitration from the Phillies since no one was willing to give him a 5-year deal for $15 million/season. That rotation looks pretty dang good with Millwood, Wolf, Padilla, Myers & Milton. With the improvements made to the bullpen the Phillies have to be the team to beat in the NL East, and possibly all of the NL. If they fail to make the playoffs again, or even are slow out of the gates next spring, how long do you think Larry Bowa will last? Only 5 players remaining that could affect draft compensation. I'm pretty sure Gabe White is going to stay in NY, I don't see anyone grabbing Surhoff, and I think the Braves might hold onto Julio Franco to platoon with young left-handed hitting Adam LaRoche at 1B, leaving Palmeiro & Vander Wal as the only players that still may affect the draft order. We'll find out more by tomorrow with the deadline to accept/decline arbitration at midnight tonight.
  23. 11, check the first post on this very thread. I've been updating the draft order as free agents have been signed.
  24. Getting Cruz and Machado off the 40 man was luck, plain and simple. I'm sure Doug had some kind of gauge to know if someone was going to be interested or not, but it still boils down to luck. I couldn't disagree more. I'm pretty sure both were calculated moves. 40-man roster spots at this time of year are pretty hard to come by. Teams already are trying to decide which of their own players to keep which makes it even tougher to scan the waiver wire to see if there are any players worthy of a spot. Doug Melvin was in a pretty good position with several players probably knowing he could sneak Machado & Cruz off of the 40-man roster and get them get in due time.
  25. That would be another solid signing. Liefer has always had a good bat with some pop, and it's easy to see him being a productive bat off the bench. He can play both corner IF spots too, which obviously is a plus.
