  1. First of all, don't get me wrong, I like how the A's draft as much as I think it's foolish that any team virtually ignores high school talent. They've gotten a few of my favorite prospects the past couple of years with Blanton & Sullivan being 2 guys I really liked. And I know I was generalizing while your points prove there is more than one way to build a ballclub through the draft. However, like you said, the A's are already contenders. The title of this post probably didn't help, as I guess my point was that if guys like B.J. Upton, Jeff Allison and/or Lastings Milledge turn out to be as good as everyone thinks they could while guys like Bullington & Maholm max out as productive yet complimentary ballplayers, the Pirates really blew their chance to obtain a few premier players with a couple of high draft choices. The A's can get away & look a lot better in doing so more with their "safe" picks in the 20s & later. Of course, if Paul Maholm turns out to be Barry Zito I'll just shut up http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .
  2. There's a nice picture of Luis Martinez on the homepage of Top Prospect Alert: www.topprospectalert.com/
  3. Davis a solid #4 or #5? He couldn't stick with the Rangers or the Blue Jays, how do you expect him to actually be considered an option for the Brewers in '04? And if he is an option, why do you think he's at AAA right now? It's one thing if he's an emergency option, it's another if we're pencilling him into our opening day roster for next year today. And for now, no thanks.
  4. Unfortunately these 2 sources might be the same person http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif .
  5. Interesting little blurb in today's Daily Dish at BA: www.baseballamerica.com/t.../dish.html It basically talks about the Pirates & their decision to take the perceived safer pick in college RHP Bryan Bullington vs. prep SS B.J. Upton. Upton was largely thought of as the best player available in the entire draft, but GM David Littlefield reached for a player that he thought could get to the big leagues & contribute a lot earlier. Turns out Upton was recently promoted to AA, now one level ahead of Bullington, with some rumblings that Upton may see time with the D-Rays before the season is over. Of course, the story also notes that Bullington could bounce back, but it is important to keep in mind that college picks aren't always the more guaranteed route. On top of that, Littlefield & the Pirates reached yet again in this past year's draft taking LHP Paul Maholm. While I like Maholm and think he could be solid contributor at the MLB level, he probably maxes out as a #3 starter, and there were several players that most teams considered to be better players available on the board (Michael Aubrey, Jeff Allison & Lastings Milledge immediately come to mind). These conservative picks may come back to haunt the Pirates.
  6. I think it took about a week before Gwynn signed before he started playing. I believe he spent 3-5 days in Beloit with the team before seeing time on the field. Plus, let's not get our hopes up too much. We have no idea how reliable this guy's source is.
  7. Take this for what it's worth, but a poster over on the T1 message boards is reporting that a source close to him is reporting that Weeks will be signed by Milwaukee very soon, specifically mentioning it will happen Tuesday afternoon in Milwaukee. Keep your fingers crossed...
  8. My bad. I think I'm thinking of Derek Lee in regards to the AA pitcher the Brewers considered bumping straight up to Milwaukee. And I'd probably bump him up from Indy before Martinez. Same goes for Doug Davis & possibly even Coco. Without a doubt I would call up Martinez among others in September. Heck, they could really do something revolutionary at the big-league level by calling up as many AAA starters as possible & have them piggy-back with one another, especially since Indy won't be in the playoffs. Davis, Martinez, Coco, Manning, Lee, Ford & Obermueller collectively could fill at least 3 spots in the rotation, and you might have some fans driving up from Indy to see that happen. I think I was snakebit hard the past few seasons with Brewers seeing success in the minors & immediately bumping a player up. Let him enjoy that success in Indy & let him prove that he's not a fluke. He was great in AA as well, but I want to make sure that he keeps his walk totals down. If he comes up to Milwaukee & starts walking people like he has in the past, he's not going to enjoy much success. And no, it's not the worst thing in the world that could happen. It has nothing to do with his stuff, experience or how old he is. When faced with such a decision I would like to see the Brewers continue to ride on the safe side instead of their recent tendencies.
  9. I agree with nikip, no need to rush Martinez. Calling him up in September when the rosters expand is early enough. Depending how he does next spring of course, I also would like to see him start the season in AAA. However, I have to believe the Brewers will feel the urge to bump him up. Didn't they feel the urge to bump him up from AA a couple of weeks ago? I'd like to know what happened between last year & this year that caused this young man to put things together? I'm not used to watching players that have tons of potential without the numbers to match actually turn their promise into production.
  10. The Area Code Games officially start tomorrow & run through Saturday. The Brewers held/are having an exhibition game between their 2 teams (White & Grey) yesterday & today. I'm sure Baseball America will be providing coverage of the event over the course of the week, and hopefully we'll start to hear about some of the emerging prep stars. And be sure to check out Brewerfan.net's interview with Jack Zduriencik (linked to the left) to refresh your memory of the Brewers' special relationship with the Area Code Games. To check out their official site visit: www.areacodebaseball.org/
  11. Interesting story on how the negotiations are going between Milledge & the Mets: www.nypost.com/sports/mets/38140.htm Note his agent is Tommy Tanzer, I believe the same man that advised Matt Harrington not to take a $4+ million offer from the Rockies. If that wasn't Tanzer, I apologize in advance, but I'm pretty sure it was. Basically, at what point do these kids realize they could be facing a once in a lifetime opportunity? I know it's not entirely up to them, as these agents come along & promise them riches beyond their wildest imaginations. But it does sound as though his father isn't helping the process. I like Milledge, and still think he could be the most talented player from this past June's draft. If there is bad blood between he & the Mets, Milledge could attend Manatee JC & be eligible for the draft again next June. Just another name to keep an eye on.
  12. Some of these moves are really odd. The new regime came in & said they were going to preach patience with advancing their prospects, with guidelines for each player on how & when they would be bumped up. So, what were Brad Nelson's goals? 160 ABs? More than 10 extra base hits? 1 HR? I think it's clear the organization feels a lot of pressure to get these kids up sooner rather than later. If it weren't for playoff races we would probably see Parra, Sarfate, Fielder, Gwynn, Ramirez & Palmisano all bumped up. And I'm sure moving DJ Clark back down to HD was an organizational move. For as much as we complain about how the Brewers ignore the Mavs, I think they were for once looking out for them in this case.
  13. From BA: Drafted with the 14th overall pick out of Houston, Wagner will serve as Scott Williamson's setup man but the Reds are already talking about converting the 21-year-old Wagner to the starting rotation next spring. Well whaddya know? As I stated above, if the Reds are indeed thinking about turning him into a starter, doesn't it make more sense to have him learn slowly while stretching out his arm in the minors? I just have a bad feeling that they're going to mess up this young man's career.
  14. I have no problem with a winning team that is picking later in the first round to pick up a power reliever like Wagner. In fact, I really don't have a problem with Ryan Wagner at all. I followed the guy all spring long and his numbers were incredibly impressive. No one touched him. And the Reds were being cheap. They signed Wagner quickly for $1.4 million, which is less than the $1.425 million the Giants gave another college closer, Rice's David Aardsma at #22. However, the Reds farm system isn't exactly bursting with talent, and it's obvious their major league team needs starting pitching. 2 players that were still on the board would have made more sense to them than Wagner: Wagner's teammate at Houston, RHP Brad Sullivan and Massachusetts prep RHP Jeff Allison. Again, money was obviously an issue, but I guess I'm confused as to why the Reds won't take a player like one of these guys yet 2 years ago they signed Dane Sardinha & David Espinosa to goofy contracts. Ever since then they've been cheap cheap cheap. As I said before, for all I know the Reds do plan to try Wagner as a starter down the road. I doubt it, because that's the type of thing you try in the minor leagues, not the majors after spending all of a month & probably less than 30 total innings on the farm. I guess I think it makes a lot more sense for the defending National League champion Giants to take a reliever in round 1 (at #22 overall) than the Reds at pick #14.
  15. He's a reliver tho.... seems weird to spend your first round draft pick on a guy who will never start. I agree, but we're seeing a lot of teams drafting projected relievers early. I think a lot of scouting directors will tell you that if they're spending their first rounder on a pitcher, they want a starter & a potential front line starter at that. And, as we all know, most of the best relievers started their pro careers as starters, only to be converted down the road. I do wonder if the Reds had any inclination to try this guy as a starter down the road.
  16. cincinnati.reds.mlb.com/N...p&c_id=cin The Cincinnati Reds have called up their first round draft pick from last month, Ryan Wagner. They aggresively placed him at AA after signing, bumped him up to AAA after a few outings, and now he in the big leagues. It will interesting to see how this young man handles the pressure from being bounced up so quickly. He definitely has a major league arm with a filthy fastball-slider 1-2 punch, but obviously it takes a lot more to succeed than a good arm.
  17. Without a doubt, I'm sure that hit by Prince was payback. We all saw him get hit last night, and we also saw him express some frustration immediately afterwards. MassBrew reported that Prince was also hit the night before, so you know when he had a chance to get a little redemption he made the most of it. As much as I hate to hear about him doing something like that, the pure baseball part of me loves it. I really would have liked to see that, and I can only imagine the roars from the crowd. And I'm sure the story of this hit will quickly make it's way around the Midwest League, if not all of minor league baseball. Would you want to mess with Prince? We talked about this last night when he was busting his tail stretching a bloop single into a double, asking ourselves who would want to get in the way of that? And if you're a pitcher, do you want to put your catcher or other teammates at risk? While he may be cocky, it may do wonders for his reputation if he finds new ways to intimidate his opponents.
  18. I'd like to thank everyone for showing up on Saturday night. It's always a nice time hanging out with the brewerfan.net crew. It also was a pleasure to meet some new people that took the time to come find us. Chris, if I forget to email you, be sure to pass along your address so I can mail you another shirt. I'm glad we were able to make the most of that opportunity with Ulice Payne. Nice job guys. A few other observations... For some reason, I kept thinking the 3B was Jeff Eure. Probably because he was a big guy, and I remember Heether only being listed as 6'0". While he had a tough day at the plate, he made a couple of outstanding plays at 3B. Callix Crabbe was very impressive. He made a bad throw from 2B that led to the unearned runs, but on offense he had a couple of nice base hits & flashed his speed on the basepaths. What a treat to watch Manny Parra pitch. Man, is he smooth. Coming off of the best minor league pitcher thread, I certainly hope both Parra & Jones continue to progress because they both have the chance to be really special. You could tell that Manny was pretty frustrated with himself when he walked a batter, which is always good to see. Prince Fielder gave Peoria's catcher a shove off with his elbow after being hit by a pitch. For those of us that have played baseball you know it's never a pleasant thing to have happen to you. Thanks again everybody, hopefully we can do it again soon!
  19. Does Weeks getting a major league deal really have any impact regarding when he becomes a free agent? Or even arby eligible? As far as I know, it's only major league service time that counts towards both.... If that's the case, please forgive me as I delete my posts http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif . Seriously, I can never keep track of the contract/arby/free agent/service time stuff.
  20. Peavey brought up a good point about all of the guys we're going to need to add to the 40-man this offseason. Now I'm not so sure that I don't have a problem with Weeks taking a spot. However, if I have to choose between the major league deal or no deal at all, I'm all for the MLB deal.
  21. It's not a big deal really, as long as he gets to the major leagues in three years anyway. On the negative side, it starts his option years rolling immediately, and takes up a space on the 40-man. I'm not so sure that it's not a big deal. I'm really fearful of him being that much closer to free agency. I'd like to see this guy play for as long as possible. Taking a spot on the 40-man doesn't really bother me. And I'm cranky because I really wanted to see him down in Beloit this summer. Brian, I think you stated earlier this week that your summer would be complete when you could see Palmisano, Fielder, Gwynn & Weeks all in Beloit by the end of the year. I think you got my hopes up too much http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif . But you're right, it does allow the Brewers to spread out the bonus. It didn't seem likely to begin with that they could simply hand over a $3.5 million + bonus. On a related note, MassBrew should be happy that the Marlins have signed their first-rounder, Massachusetts native Jeff Allison for $1.85 million.
  22. That stinks. Not a good way to start your career in the eyes of the fans. For Rickie (hoping he doesn't refer to himself as "Rickie" http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ) he's going to be a very rich & I'm assuming happy man. Seriously, he better be ready to play at the highest level very VERY soon. So much for my prediction of him signing by the end of the month...http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif 2 questions: One: If he does sign a 2004 contract, would he be eligible to play in the Arizona Fall League, and does anyone think the Brewers would want him to start his pro career there? Two: Would anyone let Rickie walk & take the comp pick in next year's draft instead?
  23. We're happy to have you aboard taylor07. Congratulations, and best of luck & skill to your son as he follows his dream.
  24. Wow, that's very cool. Thanks for digging that up Brian, I'll have to write them & see if I can get a copy.
