  1. Zocco homers to win it in the 12th for Indy!
  2. I don't know how much I adore Steve Stone's delivery per se, and it's not that he uses stats to back up what he says, but I'm struck by his seemingly very knowledgeable understanding of the Brewers and their personnel. I've always liked Stone, and he just exhudes an aura of intelligence that I enjoy. Jose K is my new favorite Cub.
  3. Last five years, only ONE #2 draft pick has signed before the month of August, let alone July. 2002: 1. Bryan Bullington (PIT) 10/30/02 2. BJ Upton (TB) 9/16/02 2001: 1. Joe Mauer (MIN) 7/17/01 2. Mark Prior (CHC) 8/23/01 2000: 1. Adrian Gonzalez (FLA) 6/6/00 2. Adam Johnson (MIN) 6/19/00 1999: 1. Josh Hamilton (TB) 6/3/99 2. Josh Beckett (FLA) 9/1/99 1998: 1. Pat Burrell (PHI) 7/24/98 2. Mark Mulder (OAK) 10/9/98 I would extend the drafts back to 1997, but well, to keep things optimistic, that was the year JD Drew was drafted by the Phillies at #2. JD didn't really ever get around to signing with the Phils.

  5. High Desert 5, Inland Empire (Mariners) 1 Two more hits for Mr. Nelson... High Desert Site Game Summary: ADELANTO, CA ? After a difficult first half, the High Desert Mavericks won the last game before the three-day All-Star Break, with a well-played 5-1 victory over the Inland Empire 66ers on Sunday evening at Mavericks Stadium. Mavs starting pitcher Dan Hall (6-6) was the medicine the Mavs have been looking for. Hall allowed just one run in six innings of work, sliding out of trouble on numerous occasions to win his team-best, sixth game of the year. Hall received some offensive support from an unusual offensive source, as Ozzie Chavez hit his first home run as a Maverick. His two-run shot in the seventh inning off of Jared Thomas provided the bullpen with some insurance, and gave the Mavs a 5-1 lead. Bobby Bystrowski and Justin Backsmeyer combined to work three scoreless frames of relief, as they didn?t need the insurance at all. Bystrowski, the Mavs lone All-Star representative, worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning. Backsmeyer allowed just a single hit in the ninth in two scoreless frames. The Mavs got on the board with a run in the second as Ralph Santana knocked in Froilan Villanueva for a 1-0 lead. The 66ers tied it at 1-1, as John Castellano scored on an RBI double by Jason Van Meetren. The Mavs took the lead for good with a pair of runs off Inland Empire starter Glenn Bott (3-4) in the fourth. Brad Nelson, who finished the day with two hits, scored on an infield single by Jason Belcher. Scott Candelaria would later score on a wild pitch to make it 3-1. With the victory, High Desert snaps a four-game losing streak, and is now 2-4 in the second half. Overall, the Mavs are just 27-49. After three days off, the Mavs return to action in Lake Elsinore with four straight games against the Storm beginning on Thursday, June 26. Keep in mind that the California League / Carolina League All-Star Game is on Tuesday evening in Rancho Cucamonga. The game can be heard on the internet by visiting www.rcquakes.com. 7. One thing I found interesting was Daron Sutton's reminder of the pending handout of a "Brewers bobblehead" and that "if you know which player I'm talking about, it's still going to be handed out." Why can't they say Jeffrey Hammonds? Is there some sort of copyright infringement taboo that goes on if a broadcaster says the name of a former player who is going to be featured as a bobblehead? What, are they going to erase the name on the bobblehead itself and just say "Brewers" on the bottom, but hey it's got a striking resemblance to that dude they just cut, oh what's his name? Sutton made such a big deal out of not using Hammonds' name when he was encouraging fans to attend the game and get their injury-prone bobble toy. Weird.

  9. This game has exemplified what's wrong with the Brewers. Even though they have plenty of time to pull this out, here's what's gone on: Eric Young gets picked off first and would have scored on the Podsednik triple. He's just not very good. 64th in NL OBP...kinda sub-par for a leadoff hitter. Richie Sexson not running hard to first on a bobbled ball, would have scored subsequently. An aberration, but never enjoyable to see. Matt Kinney, after surrendering five runs in five innings, batting for himself to leadoff the bottom of the fifth. They have a day off tomorrow and used the bullpen sparingly the last two nights. PINCH HIT FOR HIM. I mean, he's not pitching POORLY, but he also hasn't recorded a hit all year and doesn't help your cause when you're trailing by a couple runs. Royce Clayton with two on and two out swinging at the first pitch and grounding out weakly. So who's the easier out? Royce Clayton or Enrique Cruz? Maybe I should create a poll. Ah, but Jenkins with three hits, much good. Ooh, and runners at the corners with nobody out in the sixth.
  10. Squarepusher, you are the faster finger. Indianapolis 7, Pawtucket (Red Sox) 6 Indy Site Game Summary: PAWTUCKET, RI -- Mark Smith belted two home runs, including a game-winning three-run blast in the fifth inning, to lead the Indianapolis Indians to a 7-6 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox Friday night. The Indians (31-41) survived a two-run rally in the ninth to establish a Victory Field era record with their eighth consecutive win on the road. Bill Hall led off the game with his fourth home run of the season, and Smith followed two batters later with his seventh long ball of the year as the Indians took a 2-0 lead. Pawtucket (41-30) came right back in their half of the first. The PawSox got five hits off of Indians starter Travis Miller including a three-run home run by Earl Snyder as they took a 4-2 lead. Doug Jennings tied the game in the fourth inning when he belted a two-run home run, his third of the year, driving in Pete Zoccolillo. The Indians took the lead for good in the fifth on Smith's second long ball of the game. Hall led off the inning with a double, and Jim Rushford followed with a single before Smith became the first Indian to homer twice in a game this season. The four homers by the Indians is the most they have hit in a game all season. Miller (5-2), meanwhile, settled into a rhythm and retired 16 of the next 17 batters he faced after Snyder's home run before allowing a single and a walk to open the seventh. Shane Nance came on and induced Adrian Brown to ground into a double play, and Angel Santos to ground to third to end the threat. Nance added a perfect eighth as the Indians took a 7-4 lead into the ninth inning. Closer Roberto Giron, who had allowed one earned run in his last 17 innings, was brought on to close out the win. The first four Pawtucket batters reached base safely on an infield single, walk, bloop single and a line drive hit as the PawSox narrowed the gap to 7-5. Giron got Brown to ground into a double play for the second time in as many at-bats to record the first two outs of the inning. The double play brought in Pawtucket's sixth run, but Giron struck out Santos with the tying run on third to end the game and pick up his 10th save. 11. Beloit 5, Clinton (Rangers) 4, 11 innings Prince Fielder and Kennard Bibbs deliver for the come-from-behind madness. Beloit Site Game Summary: The Snappers and Lumberkings started their four game series off in dramatic fashion tonight as the game went extra innings in a back-and-forth battle. Clinton jumped to a 2-0 courtesy of a two-run shot by Manny Santana in the second inning. Beloit plated their first run in the fifth, but they trailed 3-1 going into the eighth. In the eighth, Kennard Bibbs and Callix Crabbe both drew walks to start things off. After Jeff Eure popped up to second base, Prince Fielder came to the plate. A double-steal put both runners in scoring position. Fielder then singled to score both runners and tie the game, 3-3. The game went to 11 when Nate Gold drew a two-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Santana, who delivered the home run earlier, knocked a single to give the Kings a 4-3 lead. But the Snappers would not go quietly. Travis Hinton singled to lead-off the Snappers' half of the 11th. Mario Mendez came on to pinch-run for Hinton. After Steve Moss struck out, Pedro Esparragoza reached on an error by Craig Ringe. Nic Carter then flew out to right and Mendez was nearly doubled off second base after the catch was made by Juan Senreiso. A wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third for Keith Bohanan. Bohanan lined a shot back at Luis Marcano that went off Marcano and resulted in an RBI single for Bohanan, tying the game, 4-4. Bibbs then came to the plate looking to be the hero. And he was. Bibbs drilled a shot to deep right that hit the base of the wall and won the game for the Snappers by a final of 5-4 in 11 innings. Game two of the series is tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. Manny Parra takes the hill for Beloit against Nick Masset.
  12. So with West Tenn losing tonight, am I correct that the Huntsville magic number is now 1? Heading into the bottom of the 7th, High Desert is down 9-4. Justin Backsmeyer just finished his third scoreless inning of relief, which suggests Brian Mazone didn't fare very well. Man, how long can the Brewers hang on to him...dude's struggling.

  14. Greg's showing up on the Helena roster on the Brewers web site.
  15. Because I cannot figure out how to post the box, I will just say that Huntsville won 6-1. Jones's line: 7 IP 5 hits, one earned run, a walk, six strikeouts, and oh yes, a base hit. Corey Hart, 2-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI Mike Adams two flawless innings in relief. So how do I post boxscores?
  16. Just finished with the Huntsville broadcast: a 10-9 win. Stars scored 7 runs in the fifth to take the lead after being down 7-2, then gave up two runs and put two on base with nobody out in the ninth. Matt Childers buckled down and got the final outs...Ken Ray with the win. J.J. Hardy with two RBI, ditto for Gemoll. Kade Johnson with a two-run single, Barnwell with 2 RBIs, Hart with one.

  18. ESPN minor league scoreboard shows that Huntsville lost 6-3. Pedro Liriano got roughed up but I can't imagine the four Stars errors helped. Big news of the game would be J.J. Hardy with two home runs, numbers 6 and 7 on the year.
