Segura contract extension...
TheCrew07 replied to HiAndTight's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
If he performs at a high level sure, but I'm not going to quibble over $1-2 mil per when we are already getting the arby discount off of FA cost, and we will pay more prior to arbitration than we would have otherwise, but again, who cares about that 500k?. I was working on a middle ground scenario and not what I "think" he might do. I fully believe he's capable of being a 4 WAR player or better, I've said it multiple times on the MiLB forum prior to the season when we were discussing impact prospects over there. However for this sort of thing I'm not fond of working with absolutes and like I said earlier even with a very conservative projection for Segura we still save significant money over the course the contract. The only down side is the guaranteed contract, but again the total dead money in any season of an absolute worst case scenario is no worse than what we've had in the past carrying replacement level pitching/hitting at market rates. -

Segura contract extension...
TheCrew07 replied to HiAndTight's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
It's impossible to predict with any accuracy what Segura will be worth because we don't have a reasonable baseline to create that expectation. We're talking more than 1-2 per million per year in savings, it doesn't appear that you have a very good grasp on the concept. TB\KC saved at least $15 million over the length of the Shields contract including those FA options, Longoria's first extension will save them around $25 million and his 2nd extension doesn't have a year over $19 mil until 2022 and then drops down to $13 mil and a club buyout for $5 mil in 2023. 2013 would have Braun's final year of arby, he's being paid $8.5 million this year, the FA value of his last 2 seasons combined was $33.5 million per year (32.8 in 2011 and 34.5 in 2012). We will pay a little more than $45 million total for his first 8+ years (including 2007) in a Brewer uniform, with the market the way it is he would have made that much in his first 2 years of FA. He's being paid $10 mil for '14 and $12 mil for '15. Again even if Segura turns to be a 2-3 WAR guy any extension signed this early before his value is established we still come out slightly ahead and if he becomes a 4+ WAR player then the contract becomes incredibly valuable with tremendous cost savings. That's why I only want to be locking up "core" players long-term, players that we'd want to build around. Solid players like a Weeks or a Hart, I'm fine going year to year with those guys but I want our core players locked up early as I'd like 9-10 years of team control through the players' prime and then I want to cut bait and move on to the next player. edit. This is the thing, and I really didn't make it clear, but real big cost savings come in on the FA side where you're looking to buy out FA years at 60%-80% of the market value. Paying an extra $500K up front in those pre-arby years meaningless when you save so much money on the back end. I don't expect every deal to be like Braun's where we are likely paying below 50% for those FA years, but 70% is still tremendous cost savings, and of course the more the player is worth the more money you save as 70% of 20 mil is 14 mil, and so on. The closer a player gets to FA and setting an established value, the less likely you are to be able to get that kind of significant discount and while buying wins at 90% of their value is better than paying 100 or 110%, it's not as good as what could have been done with a little bit of foresight. -

Quad Cities chills Wisconsin's homecoming Roache homers for Rattlers in professional debut By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers returned home from a week of bad weather in Iowa and were happy to be able to play at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Sunday. But, the Quad Cities River Bandits and Houston Astros prospect Carlos Correa spoiled the homecoming with a 12-5 decision over Wisconsin. The result also put a damper on the professional debut of Victor Roache, the latest Milwaukee Brewers prospect on the Timber Rattlers roster. Correa, the #1 overall pick in the 2012 draft, put the River Bandits (10-5) up in the top of the first with a solo home run. Victor Roache, who was selected with Milwaukee's 28th pick in the first round of the 2012 draft, responded for the Timber Rattlers in the bottom of the first. Roache lined the second pitch he saw in his professional debut off the scoreboard in left-center for a two-run homer and a 2-1 lead. Chris McFarland followed with another home run and the back-to-back round trippers put Wisconsin (5-8) in front 3-1. But, the River Bandits came back with three runs in the top of the second inning. Ariel Ovando drove in the first run with a double. Jordan Scott was next and his two-run double pushed Quad Cities up 4-3. Jesse Wierzbicki pressed the River Bandits advantage to 6-3 with a two run home run in the top of the third. Wisconsin pulled to within a run in the bottom of the third. Clint Coulter, who was picked with the 27th pick in the 2012 draft by the Brewers, knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly. Adam Giacalone, who just joined the team on Sunday, followed with an RBI single. But, the River Bandits pulled away with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Wisconsin starting pitcher Leonard Lorenzo walked Correa to start the fifth and gave up an RBI double to Austin Elkins. Lorenzo walked Wierzbicki and that was all for the Rattlers right-hander. Wisconsin reliever Taylor Wall would get a strikeout to record the first out of the frame, but Rio Ruiz drove in two runs with a double and the Bandits were up 9-5. Quad Cities put the game away with three more runs in the top of the eighth. Correa hit his second home run of the game, a two-run shot to left off Damien Magnifico. A wild pitch let the third run of the inning score. Wisconsin went down quietly in the second half of the game. Vincent Velasquez retired the final eleven Rattlers hitters he faced in order to close out the game. Game two of the series is scheduled for Monday evening. Brent Suter (0-1, 1.00) is scheduled to start for the Timber Rattlers. Daniel Minor (1-0, 5.56) is set to go for the River Bandits. Game time is 6:35pm. Monday is a Qdoba Q*Monday with 106.7 The Kruz. Purchase a lunch entrée at either Qdoba location in Appleton and receive a ticket to any Monday home game during the 2013 season. If you can't make it out to the game, there are a myriad of ways to follow the action. Monday's game is being broadcast on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel. The game is available to fans with subscriptions to MiLB.TV. The radio broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starts with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm. HOME RUNS: QC: Carlos Correa (2nd, 0 on in 1st inning off Leonard Lorenzo, 1 out) Jesse Wierzbicki (2nd, 1 on in 3rd inning off Leonard Lorenzo, 1 out) Carlos Correa (3rd, 1 on in 8th inning off Damien Magnifico, 2 out) WIS: Victor Roache (1st, 1 on in 1st inning off Joe Bircher, 1 out) Chris McFarland (1st, 0 on in 1st inning off Joe Burcher WP: Michael Dimock (2-0) LP: Leonard Lorenzo (0-1) SAVE: Vincent Velasquez (2) TIME: 2:44 ATTN: 2,478 Rattler Radio Blog with post game thoughts. Wisconsin Boxscore This young WI team, like many young teams, tends to have things really go south when they start going bad. Hopefully over the course of the season that situation will reverse itself. Interesting roster moves today gave Tyrone Taylor a chance to have the day off, Mitch Haniger actually roamed CF and Michael Reed moved over to RF with Victor Roache playing left. Roache was involved in a couple of interesting defensive plays and the wall incident mentioned earlier in the thread is included in Chris' blog story linked above. Carlos Correa broke out of an 0-10 slump in a huge way today... my goodness. The Rattler batting averages are getting pretty ugly but like the pitching lines with such sporadic game action it's extremely difficult to take anything away from the early part of this season. I wouldn't qualify the defensive issues as playing time related, the throwing & passed ball problems have been consistent since the start of the season. Hopefully that will also improve as we move deeper into the schedule. Wisconsin Recap Chris skimmed this half inning in the game story. Quad Cities Top of the 8th Ariel Ovando grounds out, shortstop Orlando Arcia to first baseman Adam Giacalone. Jordan Scott walks. Teoscar Hernandez grounds out, third baseman Jose Sermo to first baseman Adam Giacalone. Jordan Scott to 2nd. Carlos Correa homers (3) on a fly ball to left field. Jordan Scott scores. Austin Elkins walks. Jesse Wierzbicki singles on a line drive to right fielder Michael Reed. Austin Elkins to 3rd. With Chase Davidson batting, wild pitch by Damien Magnifico, Austin Elkins scores. Jesse Wierzbicki to 2nd. Chase Davidson strikes out swinging. Wisconsin Gameday -

Rattlers get the split with game two win Haniger homers again as Strong and Wagner shutdown LumberKings By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers CLINTON, IA - Mitch Haniger homered again and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers held on for a 2-1 win over the Clinton LumberKings is the nightcap of a Saturday doubleheader at Ashford University Field. Haniger put the Timber Rattlers (5-7) on the board in game two the same way he did in game one. The Wisconsin right fielder launched a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead. Wisconsin added on to their lead in the second inning. Chris McFarland drove in Alfredo Rodriguez with an RBI grounder to make the score 2-0. Clinton (6-9) took advantage of a pair of Wisconsin miscues in the bottom of the third to plate a run. A leadoff walk and a bunt single put two runners on to start the inning. Tim Lopes bunted back to the mound on a sacrifice attempt. But, Michael Strong's throw to center skipped into center to allow the runner from second to score and cut Wisconsin's lead to a single run. The next batter reached on the third Wisconsin error of the game to load the bases with no outs. But, Strong escaped the third inning with the lead intact thanks to back-to-back strikeouts and a flyball to right. Tyler Wagner took over for Strong to start the bottom of the fifth inning. He allowed a leadoff single in the fifth and a two out double in the sixth, but maintained the one run advantage. However, the degree of difficulty jumped considerably in the bottom of the seventh and a leadoff single and an error put the tying run on second with no outs. A stolen base put that tying run at third with one out. Wagner responded with a strikeout and a tapper back to the mound to finish off the LumberKings. The Timber Rattlers return home to begin a nine-game, ten-day homestand on Sunday. The Quad Cities River Bandits are at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium to kick off the series with a game that has a scheduled first pitch at 5:05pm. Leonard Lorenzo (0-0, 0.00) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. The River Bandits have not yet announced a starter for the first game of the series. Sunday is a Brewers Sunday presented by 107.5, The Fan. Before the Timber Rattlers and River Bandits play the game fans can play catch on-field. After the game, Timber Rattlers players will be available for an autograph session. Time Warner Cable customers can receive up to four half-priced reserved bleacher tickets when showing their TWC bill at time of ticket purchase. Timber Rattlers players and coaches will be wearing Brewers-themed jerseys during the game. If you can't make it out to the game, tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 4:45pm. Sunday's game is also available to subscribers of MiLB.TV. HOME RUN: WIS: Mitch Haniger (2nd, 0 on in 1st inning off Matt Anderson, 2 out) WP: Tyler Wagner (1-0) LP: Matt Anderson (1-1) TIME: 2:05 Wisconsin Game 2 Boxscore One would think that with Victor Roache on his way to WI that Mitch Haniger's time in WI has come to an end, or quickly nearing such. There's no reason to have 4 legitimate prospects fighting time for in 1 OF, I'll be curious to the see the starting OF for tomorrow's game. Also with Adam Giacolone on the way there's really no reason for Parker Berberet to be in WI to hold down C, DH, and 1B duties anymore. The Rattlers played some atrocious defense in this one but managed to hang on for the win and end the losing streak which is all that really matters. Wisconsin Game 2 Recap Nothing beyond the game story worth noting here.

Clinton clips Wisconsin in game one Rattlers held to two hits in 4-2 loss By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers CLINTON, IA - A pair of Clinton LumberKings pitchers held the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to two hits during a 4-2 win in game one of a doubleheader Saturday at Ashford University Field. Tyler Pike pitched five innings and struck out four for the win. Dario Pizzano's two run double put the LumberKings ahead to stay. Mitch Haniger wasted no time in putting the Timber Rattlers (4-7) on the scoreboard after the three-day layoff. Wisconsin's right fielder cracked a two-out solo homer off the scoreboard in left-center. But, that was the only hit Wisconsin would get off Pike. Clinton (6-8) would plate a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game. Pizzano gave the LumberKings the lead in the bottom of the third. Pizzano's two-out double to right-center drove in a pair of runs and Clinton was up 3-1. Pike turned the game over to Clinton reliever Blake Hauser in the top of the sixth. Hauser retired the Rattlers in order. Clinton added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to go up 4-1. Clint Coulter was hit by a pitch to reach base against Hauser to start the top of the seventh. A one-out double by Mike Garza scored Coulter to cut Clinton's lead to two runs. Then, Orlando Arcia drew a walk to put the tying run on base. But, Hauser retired the next two batters to nail down the win for the LumberKings. The loss was the third straight for Wisconsin. Well NW WI is the Twins market, not the Brewers, so the total population within the state really isn't representative of total number of potential viewers.

Segura contract extension...
TheCrew07 replied to HiAndTight's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
You've convinced me to up my time table on this, I wanted to see if he was going to continue to improve at SS, but he's athletic enough and I like his approach at the plate enough that I don't care if he ultimately gets bumped to 2B, the contract would still be an incredible cost savings. Count me in for an ASAP extension if he's willing. Since he's 22 now and has 5 years of team control remaining past this full season I'd like to offer him 6 years up front with 3 option years running the extension through his age 32 season if we so choose. That would give us a decade of team control during the prime of his career. Worse case scenario he gets hurt and never plays again costing us about 24 mil with a buyout with the yearly cost escalating a little bit each year over 6 years (I think PFx1's numbers are tad light through the arby and first FA year). However he'd still be less dead money over a 6 year run than we carried in the past with washed up players like Hall, Suppan, Gagne, Hoffman, Wolf, Davis, Looper, and so on. Even in the most expensive years the dead money wouldn't handicap the team to the point of not making any moves. Best case scenario he's a 4+ war player for the duration of the extension and we rake in huge cost savings like we have with Braun, well Braun's first extension anyway. Even if he's only a 2-3 WAR player most of those seasons we still pull a bargain on the average cost of a marginal win. I'd much rather spend money on a young player like Segura than what we've done in the past. edit. Oops, I just realized he's 23 and my math was bad, but I'd be looking to extend him to age 32 regardless. -
