Low attendance at game 1? why?

I was more than a little surprised to not see 45,300 as the attendance for game 1 (Melvin had stated in the paper that this was the absolute max)

 

The attendance was 43.992

 

Reasons? Less tickets available for needs with national media?

I'd guess that a significantly greater number of complimentary tickets than usual were given out. Those wouldn't count toward the paid attendance.

 

Figure in that every player on both teams would have had family there. Additionally, there would have been other employees of both teams given free tickets. You could go on from there.

I was thinking the same thing regarding the attendance.

 

Good points Casey, didn't think of those things. However, I'm pretty sure that Philly broke their attendance record at Citizens Bank ballpark during one of the first two playoff games. So, I'm not understanding that (you would think that they would have a bunch of complimentary tix as well)

We were surprised too, and the only explanation we could think of was the presumably large contingent of complimentary tickets. There were certainly lots of standees, seemingly all over.

 

I suppose some ticketholders opted to go to the UW game (though I personally can't fathom why, but different strokes).

No-shows still count toward paid attendance. The only explanation IMO is complimentary tickets and seats taken out for media (which I didn't notice anywhere)

Most likely comp tickets, as people have said before. MLB takes a ton of tickets for themselves and their sponsors, and I don't think they pay (though I could be wrong on that front).

It looked as full as I have ever seen. That includes opening day games, Cubs game, the first ever game, and All-Star game (Home-Run Derby).

I was shocked it wasn't over the 45,300 mark that they hit against the Cubs on Sunday as well.

 

Standing room only was 3 deep (at least) every where in the park. And I didn't see any open seats around us. I wish they had announced how many were actually at the game - because it was a lot.

The brewers only sold 1500 standing room rather than the usual 3000. There is your answer

I wonder why they would cut back on SRO for the playoffs?

 

Maybe they knew there wouldn't be many no-shows - and there is only SRO for so many people. (Lets face it, most SRO tickets end up sitting in seats that no one is using)

JSOnline had listed the way tickets were allotted and stated MLB gets 10,000 per game.

The 10,000 tickets wouldn't all be complimentary. There'd be some, but the great majority of those would be tickets made available for purchase.

Besides tickets given away and tickets sold by MLB, I wouldn't be surprised if a third category existed in that pool of 10,000: tickets purchased by MLB then subsequently given away.
