Rays' lineup error happened to Brewers in 1988

The Brewers had a Yount and a Young, and the manager screwed up and put down Yount twice on the lineup card, and the ruling was that Yount got ejected when his second spot came up.

 

For those that haven't heard about it, the Rays had to bat the pitcher 3rd instead of Longoria on Sunday because the manager screwed up the lineup card.

I think I might have been at this 1988 game. Recently I found my old stubs (going back to 1983); I'll have to check.

I remember this happening, mostly because of a photo of the incident. The photo featured Robin Yount being restrained as he was ejected from the game.

I was there. I was about 7 years old, and I remember my dad trying to explain to me why I couldn't see Robin that day.

This is a frivolous reason to bump the thread, but I was right! I was at this game, and I found the stub this evening. Upper Box 19, row 8, seat 12. $10.00.

 

I was hoping I wasn't turning into one of those fans, who claims to have seen every big or unusual moment in person.

Sure would've been better for the Crew at the time if Mike Young had been the one ejected instead of Yount.

 

At one point didn't Young have a near-Nelson type of BA going for a good stretch? As good as he'd been in Baltimore, he was horrible as a Brewer.

You would hope at some level that common sense would rule the day and the ump would simply say: "Hey, you made a mistake, please correct it", then we move on with the game.

 

Sad when stupid things like that have to blow up into a big deal...

True, but then you're essentially making the ump make a type of "judgment call" - the kind of thing many sports try to eliminate for officials.

Aside from that, an ump could easily get into trouble with the league for using "common sense" and ignoring a blatant infraction of the rules - intentional or not. Good luck explaining that one as the ump to the opposing manager... "Yeah, they made a mistake and violated a rule, but since I think they meant this, it's ok....." I think the coach would also get into trouble with the league for the fit he'd throw after the fact. Unless the league made a rule change to specifically state that in the case of a clear mistake, the ump has the authority to allow the "typo" to be fixed and to allow the game to progress as normal, it's not gonna happen.

That said, I do agree with you, I just think that it's hard, especially at the major league level, to ignore a violation of a rule (intentional or not).

As one last note, this is where "preventive officiating" could come into play - I wonder if there is a way the ump could get the lineup cards before they technically need to be turned in? That way, if the ump does see a mistake, the coach still has time to fix it and resubmit the lineup at the proper time.

I was referring to obvious ones like having Yount in the lineup twice... You turn in your card and someone says: I noticed you put Yount down twice: since that is obviously not allowed, what did you really mean?

 

If you put down a pitcher and not a DH or something that is valid (but dumb), well, thats tough luck.

Yeah, but at the same time, the teams know the rules and it's not the umpire's job to check everything over for the coaches.... Let's put it this way: I see your point that the umpire could use common sense, but I don't have a problem with a team getting punished for mistakes like that.
