Pirates trade Freddy Sanchez to the Giants for Tim Alderson

Apparently a one-for-one, no word who the Giants' minor leaguer going to Pittsburgh is yet.

5:51pm: Kovacevic is reporting that the minor leaguer is AA pitcher Tim Alderson. This is an impressive haul for Sanchez--Alderson was ranked the #4 prospect in the Giants' system.

Not a half bad haul for Sanchez...I would assume he'd be a type B after the year (maybe he could squeak into type A). Do the Pirates have anybody that can step into 2B yet? Sanchez's contract offer was pretty reasonable for an average hitting plus defending 2B (3 Years, 20,000,000)...

I would've traded Lopez for Alderson. Ranked 60th overall by Baseball Prospectus in their Top 100 Prospects for 2009

Sanchez has an $8 mil club option for next year. Hard to see the Giants parting with Alderson unless they plan on picking that up. As for the type A / type B question, mlbtraderumors estimates that he is a type B right now, but he's close to the top of the type B range, and as far as anybody knows Elias only uses the last 2 seasons of stats for their rankings, so it's very difficult to guess where he'll fall after next season.

I completely agree. I would have even thrown in a prospect. Alderson would be a perfect pickup for this team, even though his upside is somewhat limited.

It'll be interesting to see what becomes of Alderson. Pittsburgh has been a bit of a black hole for these young stud pitchers the last several years.
