Why doesn't Coffey start?

Posted
We need to shake things up on the mound. Why not give Coffey a shot at starting? Stick Suppan or Bush in the bullpen when they come off the DL. I know he's valuable in his current role, probably more valuable than any pitcher on the team, other than Yo. But as good as he's been, why not give it a shot?

Considering that he's been a reliever his entire career, I would venture a guess that he's a bit rusty at being able to go more than a couple innings at a time.

Todd Coffey's last start was in single-A back in 2002.

I'm not completely opposed to converting relievers into starters, but the success rate is very low.

The bullpen is already so depleted as it is and Coffey has been our most valuable reliever this year (including Hoffman--sorry, 35 innings doesn't cut it).

I like that you are thinking outside the box with your idea, but I'm not sure that moving Coffey to the rotation would be much help to the poor Brewers starting pitching this season. It would also take more than a month to stretch him out to a point where he'd be able to go more than 4 innings.
