The Tigers had a special celebration of Ernie Harwell tonight. He's 91 and dying of cancer, and he remains one of the classiest guys in the world.

 

After watching that clip, I don't think I ever have anything to complain about again.

Thanks for posting that Jim. Ernie Harwell, to me, is easily one of the classiest men in baseball. He'll be a great loss to the game. If I ever, for whatever reason, need a quick spike in my blood pressure, all I need to do is recall how horribly treated he was by Jeannie Zelasko during the 2005 All-Star game festivities. I can't type the words I was shouting at my television when it happened.

This is the clearest piece I can still find on it. It's right below her biography. The fact that he said that it didn't offend him, allowing the matter to drop, is just more proof of how classy he is.

In Zelasco's defense, the anchor doesn't time the show.

 

Producers make those decisions. Good on-air talent (read:one that wants to have a job tomorrow), does what they're told.

Sometimes at night, when everything was just right, I could pick up a few innings of the Tigers' game as a 9 year old kid. His voice was so soothing, he sounded like god or Santa Claus. Class indeed, and he will be missed.

I grew up in Iowa and lived there until 1990. I could get WJR every night down there. I loved listening to Ernie. When I moved to Wisconsin, I couldn't get the station anymore. Probably because of the terrain. Still, I'll miss him.

Edgar, I understand that, still doesn't change the fact that she showed no tact. It could have been handled much better. I have no doubts had the roles been reversed, Ernie would have done it correctly.
