Jon Garland- he's the Brewers "backup plan" if Wolf doesn't sign

Posted

Count me out on Garland, unless it's something like a 1 year, 3 million dollar deal. He just screams of Jeff Suppan. Career K/BB of 1.62, career HR/9 of 1.12, career FIP of 4.72. Currently, Suppan has a K/BB of 1.62, a career HR/9 of 1.19, and a career FIP of 4.85. They both have averaged just under 5K/9 and right around 3BB/9. Their batted ball tendencies are quite similar, with Suppan having a been a bit better at inducing ground balls.

Wolf has a career K/BB of 2.24 (7.42K/9, 3.42 BB/9), 1.13 HR/9, and a career FIP of 4.28. I think it's reasonable to expect him to be half a run better per nine innings. It is quite unfair to compare Wolf to Suppan or Garland, as he is clearly in the next tier of starting pitchers.

Well thank goodness Wolf *did* sign. This thread title still troubles me, even though I know it can't hurt me anymore.
