Josh Butler outrighted off the 40-man roster, assigned to Nashville

Butler will not be in big league camp. After a great 2009, he was injured during spring training and never rebounded on the mound.

That is quite a drop. He went from being almost MLB ready as a starter a year ago to almost nothing.

The timing of this is curious to me....why wouldn't they do this immediately after the season....unless they were keeping him on the 40 man until they found a better alternative and that better alternative will be announced soon?

I still think Melvin will be adding that Second starter soon and it be up to Butler to earn a spot in the 3a Rotation. I think will see either Counsell or Cappy will also be added before Christmas.

I wouldn't read too much into the timing of the move. Could be they got a bad report from his winter league team, or they got indications from other teams that they wouldn't claim him if waived.

I believe the drafting of Egan cost Butler his spot which has been tenuous at best since the middle of last season. I don't think anything's imminent but that they just want 3 open spots instead of 2.

 

The reality is Dillard actually passed up Butler and they were able to bring him back on a minor league deal. Nobody was going to claim Butler.

It's too bad, i had high hopes for Butler going into last year(i think most of us did). Oh well, hopefully he can rebound and earn his spot back.
