Advanced defensive metric(s)

With the amount of technology available today, it seems to me that soon we should have a metric that accounts for the exact location of all defenders on the field before every pitch, the exact location on the field that a defender first touches a ball put into play, the amount of time elapsed between bat-ball contact and when the ball is fielded, and whether an out is recorded.

With these 4 pieces of information I would think that an extremely reliable defensive metric could be attained for both teams as a whole and individual players. Perhaps there is one out there that I am not aware of? Thoughts?

They do. It's called FieldFX. Information is not publicly available for free that I know of.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

NY Times had an article about it a couple years ago. Be sure to watch the video.

Cool! Thanks for the link. I figured something like this was in the works.
