Meet the Shuckers in Biloxi on April 14

By Mary Perez, Biloxi Sun-Herald

BILOXI -- The opening games for the new Biloxi Shuckers baseball team will be against the Blue Wahoos in Pensacola, April 9-13. When that series ends, the team will slide into Biloxi to see the stadium where they will play and meet their new fans.

The day will start with the team touring MGM Park together and meeting with the media. That night, fans can get photos with the players and autographs from 7 to 9 p.m. at Coast in the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino, across from the stadium.

Mary Cracchiolo-Spain, Beau Rivage spokeswoman, said giveaways of Shuckers' merchandise and other specials are planned.

"It will be good for the guys to walk through the stadium and get a taste of Biloxi," said Buck Rogers, team general manager, who on Monday was unpacking bats, balls and other equipment for the team. He will fly to Arizona before spring training ends April 7 to meet with the players and tell them about the game plan until the Biloxi baseball stadium is ready for them to play ball in.

"We're not the first team to play a few games on the road," he said. "We'll certainly not be the last."

The team's second series will be against the Mobile Bay Bears, April 15-19, and Rogers said he hopes Shuckers fans will drive over for the games.

"It's 58 miles, door to door, from one stadium to the next," he said.

The mood in the community is exciting as the stadium gets closer to that first pitch, Rogers said, although nobody yet knows when that first game will come. "Everyone's embracing it," he said.
