Shohei Ohtani should be the AL ROY

I’ve seen the idea floated around by some writers...and I completely agree. Regardless of the injuries and not playing a full season his stats are incredible. Ohtani has done something we simply don’t see in this game, he is a dang unicorn. 155 OPS+ and at the same time put up ace-like stats when he pitched. Not only did he do both at an MLB level...he excelled. This is one of the more incredible things we have seen period, let alone a foreign rookie who never played this kind of talent in the past.

He may not win, but in my opinion he should. What he has done should be noticed.

Other people’s thoughts?

I agree (helps that the Angels are my second favorite team). I just wish he was healthy because this wouldn't be a debate. He may be in the MVP debate instead. I know Jon Heyman, not my favorite, said this about a week ago and got roasted. After this incredible week, his "hot take" is looking more like a reality. Selfishly, I really hope that he can delay his TJ surgery until after the season.

Just depends on what the Yankee's guys do the final month if he gets shut down. It is a volume award so he may just not have the full volume needed.

On the one hand I agree he should be ROY for being able to do both. But on the other hand, if he's simply above average at both the rest of his career he should be MVP every year because he can do something that no one else in baseball can do. I'm really not sure how you value his skill set when it comes to awards, let alone I can't imagine how to figure out what to pay the on the open market.

No Question.

A Rookie Pitcher that needs Tommy John that can Hit 18 Home Runs clearly should be the Rookie of the Year

I sure hope he wins it. I am in an extremely deep fantasy league (think rosters about the size of a real life roster with 14 teams total plus 10 minor leaguers each)

Each award winner in real life wins their manager 5 bucks. Not a huge amount but something to root for.

Isn't ROY reserved for the best rookie player in the league based on their rookie season and the stats they amass?

Are his offensive numbers alone without the pitching enough to win it? I'd say no.

He didn't pitch enough to win the award imo.

I think what he was or could have been is a great story, but I don't see him as the ROY.

You have to earn the reward based on accomplishment, not based on hype.

John Smoltz didn't have enough wins as a starter to be a Hall of Famer nor enough saves as a reliever, clearly he isn't a Hall of Famer.
