Playoffs for the 5th time in team's history...

As a lifelong Brewers fan (born in 1965), it is insane to think that this in only the 5th time in team history to make the playoffs. (5 times if you count the strike shortened season of 1981)

 

Even more insane is the fact that 3 of those 5 have taken place the last 10 years.

 

It's a magical time to be a Brewers fan!

Only Miami, Seattle and Tampa have fewer playoff appearances than the Brewers (If Colorado makes it).

Wow, I did not realize we were in such exclusive company. Tampa and Miami came about in the 90s, so that is even worse.

The thought that it could potentially be for only one game is highly disappointing/terrifying. So hard to get there in this market and to boil it down to essentially a play-in game kinda sucks.

Yes i agree i been a lifelong fan and got to see all 5 post season trips now, and fully aware of the lack of post season trips for my Crew. It way i sometimes get very upset with the team and the boards at times because I want my first WS.so i am going to enjoy this and their run to hopefully a WS championship. GO Crew i be in Vegas for the playoffs and looking forward to watching the Crew

While I am eternally grateful that Selig was able to bring baseball back to Milwaukee, I think he was pretty horrible at managing the team. Once free agency hit, he was lost. Attanasio has his faults, but he has been a much better owner than Selig, and it's showing up on the field.

 

I still see St Louis as our model. They are another Midwestern town that's pretty close in terms of size to Milwaukee, but they have been managed well for decades, so they are always competitive.

 

It can be done in a "small market," and I like the current vision of team management to help re-form Milwaukee in the long run.

You could throw the Washington Nationals in there if you don't count their appearance as the Expos.

 

Another thing to note -- neither the Mariners nor the Nationals have ever been to a World Series. Marlins have been to the playoffs twice -- both times they won the entire thing. Wow...

Selig did fine from '77-'92 IMO. Hard to hold the early years against him either. The problem was they didn't receive anything for 2 HOF players. Molly leaving via FA returned nothing to the organization. Yount was simply done at that point. As a small market it is very difficult to allow that level of player to exit and not gain something to offset the loss.

 

By '92 it was clear that Milwaukee needed a new stadium or it would be impossible to compete. It took another what...7 years to get it passed and 10 to be built??? By that time, Bud was spending most of his time as commish trying to fix the problems in the entire game.

 

Were there management mistakes? Of course, but given the disparity in payrolls during that '93-'03 period, even the best front office would have been hard- pressed to field a competitive team. Look at Pitt, KC, and others. It was the worst time in MLB history for balance.

Lets face it. If the Brewers were in the old AL East they probably would get to the playoffs even less. Look at Tampa Bay this year. They had a real nice year with virtually no chance of making the playoffs.

They wouldn't be in the AL East though. The Brewers were an AL Central team after they expanded to 6 divisions.

Lets face it. If the Brewers were in the old AL East they probably would get to the playoffs even less. Look at Tampa Bay this year. They had a real nice year with virtually no chance of making the playoffs.

They were in the old NL East for 34 years and the 6 divisions in the AL for 4 years. So, if they were in the old NL East they would have virtually no chance each year.
