Does this forum need to exist?

I have questions about this forum, as it seems a legacy institution from the old software. In the current software, you can just create a thread or post, then hide it immediately. There is no reason to have a forum to stage public-facing threads, just create them in the proper forum and then unhide them as needed.

If I'm missing something, please let me know. I'm interested in understanding the operation of this forum, not necessarily changing it.

I would use this forum often when composing lengthy detailed posts that might take several days or more to finalize before going live, before moving the post to its eventual home.

Admittedly in recent years I would be its only real participant.

I would want to further study the alternative before saying goodbye to the forum, which should have limited visibility of course.
