Just had a 'How is RHP Max Lazar's season going?' moment. Looks like he was crushing for the Phillies' Double-A Reading affiliate and has been promoted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Go get 'em Max!

Quote

Before he arrived, he was nearly unhittable at Reading. In eight appearances he had no ERA, saved three games and had another hold. He struck out 18 and walked none in 10.1 innings.

Would love to see RHP Joey Matulovich get another affiliated chance.

Here the former Timber Rattler is garnering award honors crushing it during the 2nd year of his indy ball stint in Winnipeg (six starts, 2.03 ERA, 0.875 WHIP).

Way back in his draft summer of 2018 (20th round), Joey was very courteous to me as I watched him pitch a gem in the Cape League. as he and the Brewers had yet to agree on a deal. Showed up in all my Brewers gear that night and asked to speak with him postgame. A few days later, he reported to Maryvale :).

Let me ride some of this thunder...

Former Brewers Farmhands Also in the 2024 American Association:

RHP Brady Schanuel - a stablehand of Joey's in Winnipeg - 0 GS / 8 1/3 IP / 10 K / 7 BB / 6.48 ERA / 0 W - 1 L

OF Je'Von Ward - playing for the Kane County Cougars - hitting 0.284 in 87 AB's 5 2B / 1 3B / 1 HR / 11 RBI / 18 K / 13 BB / 7 SB

1B Thomas Dillard - playing for the Cleburne Railroaders - hitting 0.224 in 99 AB's 5 2B / 1 3B / 6 HR / 17 RBI / 33 K / 32 BB / 7 SB

Ol' Shucker farmhand, uber-talented RHP Zach Vennaro, was just picked up by the second place (South Division) High Point Rollers of the Atlantic League (6/8). Anyone who watched Vennarro knows: he has talent for days he simply lacks the fine-tuning of his mechanics and arsenal. He has already appeared in 1 G pitching a scoreless, hitless, walkless, 1 K inning in relief during their 6-0 victory over Staten Island. Best of luck to Mr. Vennarro as he aims to get back to affiliated ball.

Who was in that Staten Island line-up? None other than former Brewers and Padres farmhand, INF/OF Korry Howell who was apparently released a day later. This same FerryHawks roster also has ol' Brewer farmhands RHP's Robbie Baker and Nate Griep (!!) in their pitching stables. Baker has 6 SV on the season and a 3.46 ERA in 15 G / 13 IP / 13 K / 4 BB. Good work, Mr. Baker!

Staying in the Atlantic League for a brief moment:

  • Recent Mudcats and T-Rats hurler RHP Miguel Guerrero, released by Wisconsin in late April, has been scooped up (5/2) by the Long Island Ducks. He has appeared in 9 G totaling 10 1/3 IP allowing 8 H with 13 K and 10 BB. He is sporting a very Guerrero-like 6.96 ERA. Hopefully, he can find the runway and take-off. (Sidebar: Interestingly, Jackie Bradley Jr. is on the Long Island Disabled List. Huh)
  • One-time highly-touted Brewers hopeful, INF Jake Gatewood, is a core member of first place (South Division) Gastonia Baseball Club's infield. Winners of 6 straight (not to be confused with North Division's second-place Lancaster Stormer's 13 G winning streak 😯), Gatewood has appeared in 37-of-41 Gastonia tilts. Through 127 AB's, he has 34 H, 5 2B, 11 HR, 30 R, 29 RBI, 28 K, 21 BB, and 5 SB while hitting 0.268 with a 0.944 OPS. Heck of a season so far for Gatewood!

Luis Contreras was just selected by the Astros. I know @Joseph Zarr is smiling somewhere as he reads the news.

And another! Add fireballing RH reliever Michael Petersen (WBC Great Britain) to the about-to-debut list.

Catcher Alejandro Rodriguez, who saw action in nine games with Maryvale in 2023 after signing that July, and then saw barely any action at all (three games, two AB's) with Wisconsin this year, was signed by the Angels organization this week. He is currently with their Arizona Complex League team. Good for him.

The FCL Pirates have to be tickled pink ol' Brewers farmhand INF Jhonny Severino (1B Carlos Santana trade - 2023) had a 8:7 K:BB ratio at the dish in June. He's apparently realllllly worked on that aspect of his game since last summer. He's sporting a very respectable 27:20 K:BB ratio on his FCL season over an official 130 AB. Also batting 0.277 with a 0.932 OPS. It certainly appears it was a good trade for both parties - for the Brewers it obviously helped settle their 2023 1B woes and for the Pirates it has very obviously given them a meaningful lottery ticket prospect who is flashing stateside.
