Breakdown

The Brewers’ struggles from the previous week carried over into their first series this week, against Kansas City. Bryse Wilson outdueled Royals ace Cole Ragans through six innings in the opener, but the Brewers bullpen fumbled the lead to lose 3-2. The second game of the series saw Colin Rea struggle, not making it past the fifth inning. This time, it was the Royals bullpen’s turn to blow a late lead, giving up a two-out go-ahead three-run blast to Willy Adames, allowing Milwaukee to capture the second game in the set. The Brewers couldn't capture the rubber match, though, with a late comeback falling short, resulting in a 6-4 loss.

The Cardinals series was a return to form, from top to bottom. The homecoming Crew got good starts from Tobias Myers, Robert Gasser, and Freddy Peralta. The offense found success, too, scoring 23 runs over the first three games. They couldn't hang onto an early lead Sunday, but taking the series and securing a winning record still made the week a successful one.

More importantly, Milwaukee stayed healthy. In fact, they got healthier. Christian Yelich’s return to the lineup gave them an immediate boost in production. A fantastic debut from Robert Gasser inspires confidence that he could plug one of the holes in the rotation. Even Myers had arguably his most encouraging start of the season. On the bullpen front, the Brewers have established more stability. Trevor Megill has placed a claim on the closer gig. Bryan Hudson and Hoby Milner have established themselves as late-inning stalwarts, as well. This kind of consistency will do just fine until Devin Williams is able to return.

Highlights

Adames’s game-winner at Kauffman Stadium is the swing of the season so far. Rumor has it that he even called his shot.

Home runs were the theme in the first game against St. Louis, with big flies from Rhys Hoskins and Joey Ortiz, but none were more majestic than this Jake Bauers bomb.

Brice Turang’s on a quest to add some gold to his glove. This double play is just one of many for the highlight reel.

They don’t give out awards for the best bunt, but if they did, this one by Yelich would win every time.

Robert Gasser became the first Brewer since Brandon Woodruff to throw six scoreless in his major-league debut.

Hoskins’s go-ahead three-run homer put the Brewers ahead for good on Saturday.
