Barring injury somewhere... is this Patrick's last start with us until after the trade deadline? Woodruff is back and I'm assuming he will be given all the opportunities to belong again. Cortes is likely ready to return post AS break and will be back in the rotation...

Peralta, Mis, Priester, Quintana, Woodruff, Cortes

I would think we are/will be taking calls on Quintana shortly. I guess you could move Priester or Patrick to the pen and have a permanent piggy back with Mis to limit the innings.. but I'm not sure you want to mess with their rhythm like that?

Cal Quantrill is the son of Paul Quantrill who pitched 14 years in the majors (seemingly not that long ago, but this happens to me more and more as my age advances). Paul got drafted out of UW, back when they had a baseball team.

Long way to go to make the connection of Cal to Wisconsin, but there it is.

I so wish Wisconsin had a baseball team. Any chance they reinstate the baseball program at some point?

You beat me to it.  I tried to walk on at Wisconsin, but to no avail.  They dropped the program before I graduated, so it worked out for me, I suppose.  😉

This is probably for a different thread, but I would say Wisconsin is not going to have a baseball program any time soon.  There are two factors working against them:

  • The new NIL format
  • Chris MacIntosh

You will see more programs being dropped before one is added.  There has been support for Badger Baseball for years with money, land, etc.  It is too much of a money suck for the University.

It seems like our 6-10 starters are as good as our actual rotations from 20 years ago.

Truly wild times.

Patrick currently leads all rookie pitchers with 2.1 rWAR | 2.0 fWAR and he’s about to be bumped out.

Logan Henderson is one of only five rookie pitchers with at least 1.0 rWAR this year, and he’s just chilling in AAA building innings and working on tertiary pitches.

Only Skenes & Imanaga topped Tobias Myers and his 3.4 rWAR among rookie pitchers last year. Tobias is now at 58 IP of fairly dominant 65 ERA- | 77 FIP- work in Nashville just waiting for a spot to open up.

We went 5 W - 0 L while Bob Gas threw  28 IP of 63 ERA- | 84 FIP- work last year. Maybe not quite an ace up the sleeve, but for something like the 10th starter on the depth chart once he returns from injury? That’s pretty good.

More likely that UWM randomly gets a huge donation or booster for their baseball program. But it won’t happen either.

Personally I’d love to go with a six man rotation. Mis, Woody, Freddy, Priester, Quintana, Cortes. If we trade JQ then give Myers a shot. Patrick next guy up.

But Patrick over Myers (or QP if he struggles) is reasonable too.

I’m not a big fan of McIntosh, but he’s not really to blame on this one. It’s the economics, plus title IX. Plus, IMO, college baseball in the north - outside - is a dumb idea if you expect to have a season during the school year which ends in early May.

I would think with the off day Thursday and All Star game after that Patrick is sent down for a reliever. Not sure about after the break, Woodruff and Cortes have to show they can stay healthy.

True.  However, I am not thrilled with how the Track and XC teams are being displaced with the Shell being replaced.  It doesn't seem like there was not much consideration (unless things have changed in the last few months).

Football is king.  They bring in the most amount of money.  It appears that facilities are being created exclusively for football.  With the shell replacement, I could see soccer and softball being able to use it for training, but not much else.

I'm afraid that with the new economics, other sports such as swimming and wrestling might be on the chopping block.

If the goal is to get teams to Omaha every year, then I agree.  There are plenty of D3 teams that are successful playing in the cold.  Wisconsin-Whitewater won the D3 championship this year.   MSOE, Beloit, UW-Oshkosh, and UW-LaCrosse also earned a birth.  Yes -- D3 is different than D1.  I only have minimal experience with one of those schools and the regular season crowds were mostly comprised of families and friends -- nothing that could support a program by itself.  Those teams survive by a lot of fundraising.

Softball, for that matter, doesn't have a problem playing in the cold in Wisconsin -- they just schedule games in warmer climates early in the year.

While I agree cold weather is not ideal, I believe a D1 team could survive in Wisconsin.

They just interviewed Chad Patrick and he said he never seen Woodruff pitch in person before and looking forward to it tomorrow.  I hope he has a good game today, seems like a good teachable kid.

Hoskins with a triple???

1st triple in 3 years. before his knee reconstruction.

If that had been almost anyone else in the lineup today besides Hoskins, that was an inside-the-parker. That’s how they happen - not an error, but horribly misplayed.
