It seems like the Brewers are always short of cash, but then they go out and stupidly spend the cash they do have. Why not give Cruz more starts at SS to save some? Add the extra 40,000 they would save on that to Weeks' signing bonus, and we might be closer to a deal. And you can bet they will pick up Clayton's option next year even though we have Bill Hall and Keith Ginter that could play SS next year. Oh, the insanity....

I don't think the Brewers not wanting to dole out money to Weeks is the problem...

 

problem a) Weeks wants to see what Young gets...

problem b) The Brewers don't want to exceed MLB designated slot money

 

The regime has decent funds for signing these draftees, so if it were an extra 100k here or there, I think the deal would have been done already.

I'm just as excited as anyone about the sudden explosion that is Billy Hall, but he won't be playing SS in Milwaukee anytime soon considering he doesn't even play SS at Indy. He is still error prone for a 2B, SS would be a disaster. I like the idea of leaving him at 2B, since thats where his longterm future is, and it allows him to concentrate on developing as a hitter.
